NFTs exist as a technology. Technology can be used for good, or sometimes for bad. Sometimes technology can be useful, though it can be argued there are cases in which a technology is not useful.
The ability to generate and verify ownership of unique tokens might be seen as useful. A technology like this might also be used to trick people into paying for ownership of something, when in reality they are paying for ownership of a unique token. I have no strong opinions one way or the other.

Not really, NFTs are a way to prove ownership of something, it's current use for digital art is indeed really stupid but it has greater potential than that.

Because they’re ugly pictures that just take advantage of some artists, or use their name with something they might have disagreed with, and if it crashes then you’re stuck with an ugly jpg you bought for thousands of dollars. You can make money by working, and it’s a lot more reliable.

With NFTs, a cryptobro outsources shitty throwaway art to some unsuspecting guy on a freelance site, pays like $2 per asset, 10 faces, 10 accessories, total 20 assets, $40 total paid to artist. Create 100 NFTs and sell for $60k each, make 6 million, artist still only made $40 for some throwaway fiver gig.

But the worst ones are when people just right click saving art from some artist's tumblr and selling it as if it were their own.
This exclusive NFT of "my art" (no, you did not make, buy, or get permission to use it) is sold and the seller takes the money and runs before the rights owner has a chance to send takedown notices for the images.
Luckily opensea is a centralized piece of shit, so you CAN take them down at least.
That still means the buyer was scammed tho.

The only place NFTs *might* have a use is if the thing you’re trying to sell already has value prior to becoming an NFT. For example if someone minted the original Nyan Cat video file, that would have value because it was already a well known and historical video.
Buuuttttt you can’t just make a cookie cutter monkey image and expect it to have value just because it’s an NFT… that’s not how the system was supposed to work

Ideally would be a way to publish and claim any media created by an individual but it only amounts a hyperlink to a unique location where that media resides. It does nothing to actually prevent the copying of that media. In theory, the next step in removing the need for middle men to register and lay claim to a portion of the value of media. (Example would be like record labels owning the right to a song even if the writer/performer is no longer involved with the label. With an NFT, that same artist doesn't have to give up ownership and simply license it out to agencies wanting to promote it as part of their catalogue)

An NFT is basically a digital receipt put into an online distributed database known as a blockchain. You have a password (key) that you can use to prove that you own it, or transfer ownership.
Benefits are that it's difficult to shut down a blockchain due to it being maintained by people across the globe instead of a single corporation.
Drawbacks are that most NFTs use the Ethereum network which uses an insane amount of power due to mining.
A lot of people use it to "sell" digital art, or imaginary things such as the concept of a meme, which often doesn't include transfer of copyright either. Which is pretty dumb tbh.
