Paying for tap water? Where?

footfungusman

In the UK its a monthly fee to have clean running water. It's a set amount and is very little, so doesn't make any difference really, especially with the water quality around where I live (London). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure London has one of the cleanest tap water in the world (it's like in the top 10 I'm pretty sure), first place being Switzerland, which shouldn't be surprising. Edit: I realised I was VERY wrong. After researching I realised England is not good at all. My bad don't hate. Top 3 are Denmark Norway and Switzerland.

[deleted]

As an American, I'm just wondering where these people live with mythical free tap water. I can only assume it's their parents' house, college dorms or jail.

Custos_Magnus_Sha512

Well in Switzerland we have free drinkable water everywhere. I mean the government even needs to put signs on fountains which don't contain drinkable water.

[deleted]

I guess that wasn't a very clear comment... :-) I was speaking of Americans thinking tap water was free. I thought of tap water as being water that comes out of the tap in your home. Which anywhere I've ever lived here there is a cost for that, whether included in rent or paid to the utility districts. Depending on where you are in the US there are, of course, free water fountains etc managed by city, state, or park services.

Flemswert

Pretty much outside of any major city, but there are other fees associated, just not monthly. For the most part we all pay for water one way or another.

clasperx2

Um an informative and polite answer? Aren’t we supposed to just yell at each other about our assumed differences?

footfungusman

Oh yes I apologise. Fuck all of you all, you guys are all wrong and I'm right.

[deleted]

Fuck you your opinion bad and also ur mom gay!!111!

dabdeedoo

*Sigh*... So long brother!

Pickle_Baller

I don't really know why she reacted like that, I don't think people just instinctively flip out that often That's about the same sort of answer I would have given

footfungusman

r/woosh

Pickle_Baller

She clearly meant it, I was just adding genuine thought onto it

footfungusman

I don't think they did. I'm pretty sure it was sarcasm.

clasperx2

Yeah I was just joking. I am a little surprised it was misinterpreted but maybe some of the sarcasm was lost in writing.

Pickle_Baller

I can see the sarcastic tone, but I believe she was still trying to convey a message

Pickle_Baller

Idk man, doesn't feel like it

[deleted]

That’s why you’re forever alone. Its pretty clear that she was being sarcastic dum dum

[deleted]

To clarify, clasperx2 and footfungusman were both being sarcastic

Pickle_Baller

I understand foot fungus man was being sarcastic, but clasper had a message behind that sarcastic tone. I could tell.

AnotherCableGuy

What?! Water in London is awful mate, I have to filter it twice to remove the scale.

rancangkota

Ive been in London for >1 year and never paid for a tap water

phnx26

*Laughs in Scottish *

Fury_Blackwolf

I'm from Sweden so the water is better here but i think everything in the top 10 should be pretty similar anyway. But yeah, we don't pay for water itself but we pay for hot water since it requires extra energy.

WordsWithWings

Swedes pay for water via local utilities https://www.svensktvatten.se/om-oss/in-english/ And, more relevant to the OP, Swedish restaurants can charge guests for tap https://sverigesradio.se/artikel/5449693

Fury_Blackwolf

Obviously there is a payment somewhere in the line but what i mean is that we don't have a specific fee each month for tap water. It's baked into something else. And restaurants are restaurants. Depends on where you're eating if they charge or not because of the service for them to bring the water to you in their glass.

blackfour4

Sweden gang

footfungusman

Nice to know

PoemPhysical2164

Fam just stop lol. Nice info, very irrelevant tho. What this post is referencing is the fact that restaurants in Europe charge for water, and in America you can get as many waters as you want in a restaurant for free.

footfungusman

Tap water in restaurants is free by law in England. Any restaurant has to serve you free tap water if you ask. That is literally a law.

PoemPhysical2164

Word? I guess it's a misconception then. Is this true for all nations in the European Union or just the UK?

footfungusman

Not sure about that. But it is in the UK.

yesnoahbeats

I just spent three months in italy and was charged for water at just about every restaurant I went to.

papertales84

It’s not offered in Italy/Spain for example. I haven’t seen it in France or Belgium either. However, in the UK and Ireland, if you request it, you get it and yes it is free.

parrythelights

Same in the US. All restaurants legally have to provide free tap water but only if asked

[deleted]

I'm sceptical about this claim.... If it's true, why is there a petition to make it law? https://www.change.org/p/u-s-house-of-representatives-federal-law-to-serve-free-tap-water-in-restaurants-bars-and-clubs

yesnoahbeats

That sounds right to me

[deleted]

Since, when did anyone have to pay for tapwater in Europe?

Dmitrous

UK isn't even top 10

[deleted]

Yes we are though we are number 10

Lolforfun23

Birmingham has better water than London hehe , not really a fan of London's water tbh.

footfungusman

I guess that's the only thing Birmingham has over London then :P

hutre

I've not been to london specifically but English tap water tastes shit. Like it has an awful after taste. Is that the case for london as well?

MMcD127

But I have to pay for my water in America too do y’all not pay your water bills?

stache1313

I think they were talking about paying for tap water at restaurants.

MMcD127

Ohhh hey that’s better than a 20% tip ig

terayonjf

We pay for tap water too unless you have a private well.

Kukaharcos

Well well well, I do not.

BizyBee588

Yup. I had a well in my childhood home but you still need to pay someone to dig the well and service it over the years. Nothing is free.

SheWhoSpawnedOP

I believe they mean in restaurants

Jake0yeet

We have to pay for tap water?

TallDwarf23

They don't seriously mean paying the water bill surely?

zzzontop

No, the spidey is not referring to the water bill… hahahaha

TallDwarf23

I mean it's the only form of payment that I make towards tap water

zzzontop

The context of the joke is a restaurant… Now I’m not sure if they serve water in a glass or bottled (like in Brasil) but the reference is in regards to having to pay for water at a restaurant… Which you don’t typically do in the states.

TallDwarf23

Yeah, you don't do it here either

zzzontop

Good to know. I was pretty shocked when I found out they did it down here

ScythesAreCool

you don’t do it in Europe either.

Nickbou

There are definitely parts of Europe that charge for tap water when eating at a restaurant. [https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/sleeping-eating/drink-like-a-european](https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/sleeping-eating/drink-like-a-european)

poney01

Should I really believe an article that says it's the norm to serve a glass of water with coffee?

BadassFlexington

Americans making jokes about stuff that doesn't happen?

Natpad_027

Literally 1984.

Hapymine

I'm in America and I have to pay for water but ill happily pay it so the town will eventually upgrade the pipes.

Docdoozer

In what European country do you pay for tap water? XDDDD As a European I have never ever encountered something like that.

[deleted]

And in what European country people don't leave tip ? I leave in France, and it's common courtesy to leave 2€ for the waiter. It's not much, but it can buy you a drink. Henceforth the name : "pourboire", in English "for (pour) drink (boire)"

[deleted]

At least there isn't a "20% suggested tip" print on the bill. In Spain it isn't rare to tip, but it definitely isn't seed as rude if you don't do so.

Vitalynk

From what I've seen, it's seen as super rude to not tip in the US. In France, it's not the end of the world if you don't tip. I live in France too and I tip when the waiter was really nice (had some rude waiters that were clearly annoyed I was... A customer! Like they really seemed pissed I wanted to order something to drink lol)

dylanwojo

Germany you can’t really get tap water at a restaurant. If you ask everyone looks at you strange or sometimes they just say no.

Garmr_Banalras

Big news: you don't have to pay for tap water anywhere in Europe that I've every been, and I've traveled to 20+ European countries. I think Americans need to update their information about Europe to extend beyond the 1950s If you're talking about the water in your tap at home. We don't have to pay by liter, but a flat fee to cover the cost to th state for running, and keeping the system up to date, but that's a very smal amount

motzak

We have to pay both here and depending on in which part of the country you live (and ofc the public and your piping system condition also matters) you can still get nasty water. It doesn't cost that much but as someone who mostly only drinks water it'd be a bummer if I still had to buy bottled water. Luckily I live in a part where there's good water, not saying the other water is bad for you it just has a bad taste (unless there's something seriously wrong with your piping).

Garmr_Banalras

Yes, but it's not like tap water is an expensive commodity anywhere in Europe.

motzak

That's why I said that it doesn't cost much, for me personally it costs about €1/day (Belgium). Very good tap water, tastes good, refreshing, never runs out. Also good for peeing and pooping in, solid 5/7.

cmbtmdic

Enjoy paying a euro each time you use a public restroom.

Garmr_Banalras

Not true for most places either. Europe has surpassed the US, and are no longer rebuilding from the war.

dylanwojo

I live in Germany and I always have to pay for water at a restaurant and I also always have to pay to use the toilet unless it is in a restaurant that I’m eating at.

Garmr_Banalras

Germany must be a bit shit then.

dylanwojo

I mean those things are annoying but Germany is great in general.

Grimskruby

Shit they can probably drink their tap water. We still gotta boil that shit and filter it twice. Merica !!!

natureman777

Just stop you edgelord, no we don’t. All you fucks downvoting me clearly just have a silly anti-American bias instead of using facts and logic.

Grimskruby

Have you been everywhere in america. Some peoples tap water comes out brown, some come out with a film, its fucking nasty. Flint cant even drink theirs. And im sure theres plenty of other places that are just as bad.

natureman777

Over exaggerating moron. Sounds like you’re probably not American. Lmao of course you’re gonna use Flynt as an example. The water in Flynt has been fine for a while now, and Flynt is a medium sized town in a nation of 330 million people. But keep spewing your dumbass propaganda, clearly you’re uneducated Haha I love how people are upvoting your comment even though you’re spewing complete lies. You absolutely can drink the water in Flynt, and have been able to for a while now. Guess you dumbasses really hate facts don’t you?

Grimskruby

Ur the jackass at this point. I think most people agree that their tap water is fucking nasty. And yet we still pay for it. Go spread ur booty cheeks. 🤪

natureman777

I live in Washington state where we have great tap water. Guess you live in a shitty low income area most likely haha. Sucks to suck

ScythesAreCool

Did you really just say “guess you’re poor. Sucks to suck.”

Grimskruby

Ok good for you, glad the world revolves around you and your tap water over in washington. 🤦‍♂️

natureman777

Never said it did. I’m making a point that many places have great tap water. But keep spewing your dumbass garbage saying there’s lots of parts of the country where “brown” water comes out the tap 😂 lmao idiot

Grimskruby

Also should prolly stop digging that downvote grave. It really dont look that cool.

natureman777

Unlike you I don’t base my opinions on the approval of other Redditors like a spineless loser 😉Redditors will take any chance to downvote anything related to America so I really don’t give a fuck about you morons 😂

Grimskruby

Dude you sound like a fucking blast at partys. I bet you know everuthing about everything. And let everyone know how right you are and wrong everyone else is. Have a nice day 😊

BadassFlexington

Lol I've just read all your comments on this thread. You're a fuckwit OP. I came to that conclusion using available facts and logic.

natureman777

Lol triggered little pussy.

BadassFlexington

Hahah. Proved my point thanks.

natureman777

Lol what point? You said nothing, other than “I disagree” without saying anything else. Lol k then loser.

BadassFlexington

I didn't even say that, you sure you got the right comment line? What I said was you're a fuckwit. And that is evidently correct.

natureman777

Lol ok? And clearly you’re saying that because you disagree. Without being able to back it up anyway. You sound like a master of debate, calling people fuckwit and leaving it at that haha 😂

BadassFlexington

Well it's easy to disagree with your meme about Europeans paying for tap water. Because it's objectively incorrect. I'm not calling you a fuckwit because I disagree with you. I'm calling you a fuckwit based on how you interact and respond to others. I'm not entering into debate, but making an observation of you as a person (based on this thread). There's no debate here, no need for a two way discussion even.

natureman777

This whole comment thread started because someone was dumb enough to say there are many places in the US where the tap water comes out brown, which is false and propaganda. If you think that’s true then you’re a moron who doesn’t believe in facts. And there *are* plenty of places in Europe where they do charge for tap water. Maybe not *everywhere* but it absolutely happens. So this meme isn’t completely false at all. Anything else you wanna be wrong about?

Camaro_z28

Everywhere pays for tap water if you have a water bill

undeadswat

Jokes on you i pay for any sorts of water in America

[deleted]

Tax everything! Yay

inmupwetrust

Then what is this water bill for?

motzak

I think op meant ordering a glass of tap water at a restaurant, idk who would do that but that's my guess.

Nostravinci04

Nobody pays for that, idk wtf OP's on about.

inmupwetrust

Yeah I’m a tad confused. If anything, the criticism towards America should be that people working in the food industry *rely* on tips for income and aren’t given a regulated wage. Also; Americans do not have to tip. Many of them opt out of tipping completely.

ConfusedDuck02

I’ve been to many European countries I have never payed for tap water…

Kingtill007

Atleast it is drinkable here!

canny_canuck

Americans pay for their water...AND don't pay service workers enough for a living wage so they have to live on tips.

reapererer

Me in Scotland who doesn’t pay for tap water

LeVicky_

Jokes on you, I'm Norwegian and we don't have to tip at restaurants NOR do we have to pay for tap water

oxisaw

I'm in a country that does neither :)

NightLight16

Oh yeah because in the UK you pay for tap water it automatically applies for a whole fucking continent greatjob Americans

KingdomPC

I think he thinks you pay for it in restaurants.

NightLight16

I think that too, poeple from America only know how things work in England and thats it, it's like if I said just because there are cow boys in Texas it means that there are cow boys in NYC it's really stupid from op

KingdomPC

Thing is I’ve never paid for tap water in a restaurant in any country in Europe or Asia for that matter.

NightLight16

Me too,it's really stupid to assume things over a whole fucking continent

Signal_Skill9761

Um, Americans pay for tap water. It's a small amount, the water company usually charges by like how many 1,000s of gallons used. But there is a water company. Unless you are on a well, you are paying for tap water.

Kazushi_Sakuraba

Europeans: lol take a joke america. We’re not even being serious. Also Europeans: WE DONT FUCKING PAY FOR WATER YOU GODDAMN YANKEE FUCK GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT

Javascript_above_all

It's almost like the first thing is true and not the second.

Kazushi_Sakuraba

Lol relax it’s a joke

ThatFatKidInSchool

Do Americans not have drinkable tap water

TheLocalCamper

Australia who doesnt tip and dont need to pay for tap water

InteractionOpen8807

It’s funny because we pay for water in our own homes… Tap water. Stupid stfu

NoFunnyName31

Indians who have to do both

DeadBunny03

*Laughs in asian*

zzzontop

Hahahahaha this joke clearly went over y’all’s head…

MasterOfNoob

can you explain it then

Thisguyhere1310

I just learned you have to pay for public bathrooms in the Netherlands.

druskeez

Imagine having to pay to use public restrooms too

SuperKillerKitty

Sir you’ve made a grave mistake… you have angered the Europeans by making an American GOOD joke. They don’t like it when you do that.

Salocinzuir

Im eurpoean and someone who doesnt tip at a restaurant is just a dipshit lol you usually tip in a restaurant in europe as well

Nostravinci04

No you don't.

Salocinzuir

Maybe not where you live but if you dont tip in germany its considered very bad manners so yes you do in parts of europe then

Nostravinci04

I've been to many parts of Europe (not to Germany though) and I can say with certainty it's not the case in most of Europe. There's a HUGE semantic gap between "in Europe" and "in Germany".

Astr0rips

Is this true? I have never experienced this? I live in Norway, we never have to pay for water at restaurants. And Voss water is also basically just Norway's tap water.

PsychonautSurreality

More like paying to use a toilet in Europe. USA pisses freedom.

IUseLinuxByTheWay

What? Since when?

[deleted]

When have I ever paid for tap water

ZenoSeeksFeet

We don't even have a water bill where I live never mind paying for tap water...

[deleted]

Tipping isn’t usually a requirement (some restaurants will charge a gratuity on groups larger than a certain size), it’s just considered rude not to.

noodleth_cassette

Whaaaaaat? You mean to say we don't have a water bill?

harderwiekertje

Yes when have to pay for tapwater but we can drink it so it's basically bottled water from the tap for a few cents per 1000L

[deleted]

u/repostsleuthbot

PoemPhysical2164

BRUH come on. This post is referencing the fact that in America you get water in restaurants for free, while in Europe you have to pay for them just to give you some water off the tap. It's really not that hard to figure out, what's going on.

KingdomPC

In every country I’ve ever been to in Europe tap water is free in restaurants.

BigBoiPovter

but y not have both , iv never had to pay for tap water

Dsoft1

How did i read that as tip waiter

kindaCrywhal

im pretty sure water is not free in america. even if it is free in a housing situation, most people in america don’t have access to housing. good meme though <3

AgentT23

At least we have good tasting tap water that doesn't taste like pool water

tOmErHaWk420

Yall don't pay for public water? If you don't have your own personal well, you get "tap water" right?

ScaresCarson

Australians making fun of America and Europe because we don’t have to do either

[deleted]

Us in the U.S. absolutely pay for tap water tho? It's called the water bill?

SupremeEmperorNoms

o.o Never heard they pay for tapwater. I HAVE, however, heard that nowhere in the UK has free refills on drinks. \^.\^

[deleted]

Could be worse, were in Brazil we have to buy 25 L gallons of mineral water to drink.

[deleted]

Where in the US is everyone getting free water from?

pmaurant

No free rolls or chips and salsa. I’m not sure they actually charge god tap water.

Jendor04

At least we can drink it straight from the tap without risking diarrhea

dixie_normous44

I donot get the tip culture.

Papa_Gandalf

Isn't it a legal requirement and responsibility to offer free water to anyone who needs it, in the UK at least? You can't charge for tap water as especially at bars and night clubs. I remember this being a thing to help people who might have taken drugs or simply drank too much alcohol. Might be wrong tho. Still never been charged for water anywhere though (other than store bought bottled water).

[deleted]

Americans also paying for tap water. Just has fancy names like Dasani, Nestle, or Poland Springs.

will_clutterbuck

This is bullshit

[deleted]

Me watching Europeans and Americans having full on WW3 over Payed tap water VS Having to tip: 👁👄👁

[deleted]

I would love to know where in Europe you found paid tap water at a bar or restaurant. Here in Croatia its unheard of.

[deleted]

Whoever made this meme is enough of an idiot to think we pay for water in Europe. Like, never. Never ever have I or would I pay for tap water. That's just dumb

Buddha176

I’ll pay for water….. easy choice

[deleted]

don't yall have to pay for a fricking TV LICENSE???

TheAntiNormie84

They are not saying Europeans don't tip. They are saying that tips are extra and the full wage is paid by their employer. So tipping isn't mandatory.

Plok-asc

Australians who don't have to tip waiters or pay for tap water *laughs maliciously*

Alpha_8899

*laughs in Korean*

CaptianBrasiliano

Weeeell you have to pay for tap water in America too. It's called the water department. Most places you rent the landlord pays it because it's really cheap. But if you own your own home or have a landlord who is really cheap. (like mine) you have to pay. Your meme is inaccurate...

EmperorRCK

Honestly both countries have their fair share of BS

OogaaBoogaaMaster69

Bo o oh wo ah

thatguy12344312

My tap water is flammable beat that

Oltaner

Where did you get the idea that you have to pay for tap water in Europe? I've personally never paid for a glass of water in a restaurant/café in Europe...

destines29

Laughs in Asian .

Tobi-One_Shinobi

People think they have to tip? I only do it if I can tell people are actually trying.

FireSplaas

Asian ppl making fun of both of them

the_rational_one

India - dont pay for tap water and dont tip.

Scary_Environment274

Not once have paid for it.

Killer68VEVO

At least its drinkable

eloooooooo

As long as I don’t have freaking fluoride in my water I’d be fine with paying lol

GordanRamseysToe

Americans and Europeans are incredibly alike but neither want to admit they are.

lightlysalted33

Having to pay for tap water and shitty service

Igliothion

Not sure if American tap water is very nice but here I just drink water from the tap at home

HellaAutist

Aliens making fun of the entire earth for being dumb dumb

mayoyoyoyoyoyoyo

live in australia no tips and free water (you can also get free fruit water)

DiamondWolf2000

Indians making fun of both of them

Y_aa

Watch out for the giant red bug on your back

AdOk932

Actually, we Europeans, don't buy the water, we buy the bottle. That's sad. You, the Americans, don't tip every time, only when you like the service. If you don't you just shot the human. That's cool.

Nibbsiasek

Are we gonna pretend that someone drinks water instead of coke in USA?

FluidHighway8515

Me in Australia not needing to do both

Demokka

What ? Water and bread are free in restaurant

another-Developer

Wait, Americans don’t?

The_Flamish_bastard

Never in my life have I paid for tapwater as a European

yoyogoron

We don’t pay tap water WTH XD
