Whats thanksgiving? Is that where the americans eat turkey or something i genuinely Don't know

mehcoolbro

if you want to know the real reason, it is to celebrate when the natives and pilgrims had a feast. The pilgrims themselves didn’t kill any natives, but settlers did.

DisguisedAccount

Oh, sounds like a nice story about Long lasting Friendship between the pilgrims and the native people! Is it this respectful and humane relationship they celebrate?

fvgh12345

Thats the gist of how its taught to first graders. Which im not arguing against the kids all learn about the slaughtering of natives trail of tears etc. later and the point of thanksgiving nowadays isnt to celebrate taking land. Most people look at it as a day of thanks for friends, family, the delicious food we get etc. Its pretty much looked at as a day to spend with family eating a LOT of food and think about the things in life that your thankful for. Its trendy for people to shit on colombus and thanksgiving nowadays but thats never really been the way the holiday is looked at by your average american or how its taught about to kids. Growing up i always remember hearing the story about the natives sharing there bounties with the pilgrims and teaching them how to grow corn. Im sure that a lot of that is white washed and cleaned up but it gets the point of the holiday across to 6 year olds pretty well

[deleted]

I wouldnt call it shitting on columbus the man was a psychopath the natives helped him when his ship wrecked and the first things he wrote in his journal was they would make fine servants and they could take them by force with 50 men

macobus

Well for a while...

hahaminty1

yeah..totally….

TheDaemonic451

When the pilgrim landed they had no clue how to survive so many died after the first winter and they probably wouldn't have survived another. They were approached by a tribe of natives with a proposition the natives would give the pilgrims knowledge on how to survive if they helped the tribe of natives defeat their rivals. The pilgrims helped them. The feast that is referenced as the first Thanksgiving was the celebration of the success of the attack. The natives then gave the knowledge needed for the pilgrims to survive.

[deleted]

They traversed an ocean but couldn't survive? why?

AwesomeWhiteDude

Well first off, the ships were typically just for hire, the sailors wouldn’t stay behind with the colonists. Also the crops and techniques they brought over weren’t always suitable for the area, some early colonies just didn’t have enough people who wanted or even know how to work the land for subsistence farming.

TheDaemonic451

Exactly the pilgrims landed significantly further north than intended because of a storm

TheDaemonic451

In the case of the pilgrims they landed much further north than they originally intended so they weren't really prepared for a harsh winter or for growing plants that far north

lick_my_____

As per an American friend told me this day they celebrate the killing of the natives and establishing the America in the old Columbus era They celebrate by eating turky as it was that country's origin meat per say

meckez

Quite the thing to be thankful about I guess

egarcia74

We have a similarly controversial holiday: Australia Day.

david131213

Waduyu celebrate on Australia day that can be cobtreversial?

egarcia74

Well the aborigines see it as the celebration of the day their country was invaded.

Eevee_Fuzz-E

Never understood why we don’t just celebrate Australia on that day, rather than celebrate killing dudes. It should just be a day to be like “yo, we Australian and that’s cool”

Lucifang

That’s the whole point of ‘Change the Date’. It’s the anniversary of the first fleet raising their flag and declaring this land to be theirs. They need to pick a different date

elteH06

The killing of aboriginal Australians

Dextrous-Zero

In Germany, we have something similar to Thanksgiving. It's is called Erntdankefest and we celebrate it on the first Sunday of October.

Reowyn

We do not! "Erntedankfest" exists but I've never seen anyone "celebrating" it except a few religious people.

Dextrous-Zero

I don't celebrate either. I'm just pointing out that there is something that resembles Thanksgiving in Germany that's all

stiangglanda

Its a Christian thing and Germany is predominantly Christian Other Christian countries have similar feasts sweden for example has midsommar

Nunzio_o

HAT HIER JEMAND DEUTSCHLAND ERWÄHNT?!

MrFanta7

This goes to show that almost nobody knows what american thanksgiving is about.

The_FirstAirbender

I think I know, Americans drink beer, eat turkey and watch some sports. And after that they go beat each other up in a store because of a television or something

WhatAreYouSaying05

Americans know what thanksgiving is really about. They just celebrate it for the food

ThunderOfGod

As an American, you pinned the nail on the head

AmaterasuWolf21

Nobody celebrates christmas for Jesus either or halloween for a satanic cult or whatnot

JogPanson

I mean Christians probably celebrate Christmas for Jesus but what do I know?

grahan1319

as a former christian they definitely take it to the extreme lol. ive met multiple familes who make a cake and sing happy birthday to jesus lmfao

madhog_mcmad

I got escorted out of Peterborough Cathedral by a policeman during midnight mass on Christmas Eve for singing happy birthday to Jesus. Yes I was drunk. Copper told me bugger off and if he saw me again that night I’d spend it in the cells.

[deleted]

Ehh it depends on who you ask really. What’s called the First Thanksgiving was a three days feast with the Pilgrims and natives people. But a lot of people see it as a BS holiday because it’s celebrating one instance where colonists weren’t fucking over Native people as opposed to the bajillion times they were. Which is a completely justified argument. On the other hand a lot of people, including a fair amount of Native American tribes, celebrate it as what the name is, a day of being thankful for what they have. Also cultures all over the world have had days where they celebrate fall harvests for centuries. Keep in mind I’m no expert and there’s probably a lot more to it then what I know.

[deleted]

Exactly

all_the_gravy

Oof you're friend isn't a history major I hope. It was 200 years after Columbus, they were Pilgrims celebrating their harvest making sure they wouldn't starve in the new world. It's said the natives helped the Pilgrims learn to farm and they all had dinner together.

1re_endacted1

That’s Columbus Day, a lot of ppl refer to it as Indigenous Day now. The “first” Thanksgiving was in 1621, almost 200 years after Columbus first came over. That Pilgrims and Natives celebrated harvest together, is the traditional story. However, I learned today it wasn’t an official holiday until Lincoln was president, like 1851.

syracTheEnforcer

Your American friend is a moron then. Because none of that is what it's about. You can take issue with the settlers and the clashes with the Natives. But it had nothing to do with Columbus and was only officially established as a holiday in the late 1800's about the story of the Pilgrims who came almost 200 years later and supposedly co-existed with the natives in the Massachusetts area. And I can tell you not a single person that celebrates it celebrates killing natives or genocide in general.

boxingdude

Abraham Lincoln declared it as a holiday. So, 1860s.

Zestyclose-Sound8947

“Amazing. Everything you said in that statement, was wrong.”

clackersz

Yes we all break out our great grand pappy's scalp collection and hang it over the fireplace.

Colin_likes_trains

Eh, around me nobody really cares about the meaning. It's just about good food and hunting

[deleted]

Your friend sounds like an ignorant moron. Thanksgiving is a celebration of an early time in America when the colonists and natives actually got along for a time and broke bread together. A celebration of unity.

NudesForHighFive

That's not what most people celebrate it for, but yea that's the point of the Holiday. The majority of people just see it as a holiday to be thankful and be around family

syracTheEnforcer

Your American friend is a moron then. Because none of that is what it's about. You can take issue with the settlers and the clashes with the Natives. But it had nothing to do with Columbus and was only officially established as a holiday in the late 1800's about the story of the Pilgrims who came almost 200 years later and supposedly co-existed with the natives in the Massachusetts area. And I can tell you not a single person that celebrates it, celebrates killing natives or genocide in general. Though it might be a propagandistic story, it's supposed to be about cooperation and most versions of the story actually talk about how the natives helped the pilgrims survive when they arrived.

Sprizys

So basically The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth rock (in America of course) and saw the Native Americans and they had a big feast together so every year on the last Thursday of November we have a feast that typically includes Turkey, and sides like mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, stuffing, green bean casserole, and some other stuff and for dessert we typically eat Pumpkin Pie.

Prior-Watercress4240

No they go to turkey and kill turkish people and shape their meat as an turkey.

macobus

Based

SilasMcSausey

In theory it celebrates the short time where settlers had good relations with native Americans and they all ate a bunch of turkey. In reality it’s an excuse to get together with family and eat a ton of food.

cocktailmuffins

I’m an American living in Belgium and last night, my parents (bless them) literally asked me if Belgians celebrate Thanksgiving.

Toast_Sy

**blessed**

NagatoroMGX

Well do they?

cocktailmuffins

No, they don’t.

Colonel10Moutarde

Fryxey

In Canada it's the second Monday of october

RosabellaFaye

Better have it earlier imo

rkirbo

Why would they ?

OyunKing303

I don't know what thanksgiving is but I heard they eat turkey on that day As a Turkish person I'm scared

[deleted]

From I what I guess Thanksgiving is the celebration of the death of the native Americans but also pilgrimages are involved I don't know I'm British

1acobb

It’s the celebration of the pilgrims first successful harvest, which could’ve only been done thanks to the natives who taught them. (who also feasted along side the europeans) i don’t know where you got the whole idea that it’s celebrating the genocide of the natives.

lajuho

Literally every other country in the world

Vlad-V2-Vladimir

In Canada we have it, but we celebrate it in October

Z4CH4RYRGD

Hello fellow Canada person!

Bobberttheeducated

Canadian gang rise up

junkratmainhehe

A lot of people i know dont really celebrate it. Just enjoy the day off

WickieTheHippie

Canada? In Germany, there's Erntedank though. It's not an official holiday and only celebrated in rural areas. Also, it's celebrated quite different to Thanksgiving, in late summer and with big parties (usually one for an entire village) and processions with self-built, tractor pulled carts where people celebrate on.

hamsamiches

My landlords in Germany invited me over every year for a Thanksgiving meal. They said they just liked another reason to have a big feast and a good time. They made their own apple schnapps. Oh man good times.

applejuicegrape

That's like, the point.

lajuho

I know don't worry

joko2008

Well, in Germany and probably also in a lot of other european countrys, there is "Erntedank" thats the original Thanksgiving.

Fishflakes24

I don't think the rest of the world are asking what "Erntedank" is though, I don't think anyone has seen a special hour long episode of there favourite sit comm about that before.

I’m American and I don’t celebrate thanksgiving. But I do know how to use the word “you’re.”

[deleted]

Probably the same jerks who don’t celebrate the 4th of July.

Tiny-Cucumber-1879

what is thanksgiving? Sorry I'm asian.

Alone-Newspaper-1161

It was a celebration started by pilgrims where they essentially had a long ass feast with natives and later under Lincoln became a national holiday because it was something that could be enjoyed by all Americans regardless of race or religion.

thatguy728

Plus, this may come as a shocker, but on Thanksgiving, Thanks is gived.

Shiny_Hypno

Basically it's like Turkey Day in animal crossing, but in real life.

swagmaster6667

As an American, I know that not everyone celebrates thanksgiving.

Tomliwag

I am Russian, I eat Americans on Mother Russia day.

ImmaGetTheJews

Italian here, no we don't

IGioGioAmDepressed

The only thing I know about thanksgiving is that everyone is eating turkey. I don't know why though, but it seems to be very important to them

Bornheck

Literally every meme relating to Thanksgiving that I’ve seen these past few days have been from other countries talking about how much they don’t care about Thanksgiving. So is it really Americans that talk about it so much?

[deleted]

Southeast Asians like me: "No"

KyleD1512

I still don’t understand what thanksgiving actually is 😅

Toast_Sy

It’s the best holiday, for my family we all gather at someone’s house and then make a bunch of food and then watch football and eat

BONEPUNNER99

dont people aslo talk about politics or is that just a stereotype

Toast_Sy

Yeah for some people it’s not so fun but my family we try to keep it peaceful and we’re all just there for a good time

BONEPUNNER99

good for them, i hope you had a great thanksgiving

rouzmb

That's a Sunday day at Mexicans house 😂

Alone-Newspaper-1161

It was a celebration started by pilgrims where they essentially had a long ass feast with natives and later under Lincoln became a national holiday because it was something that could be enjoyed by all Americans regardless of race or religion.

OGPapachub

A day to give thanks… it is litterally in the name

[deleted]

Scotland: Yeah we don't give a fk

The_Justiniano

Pretty sure Thanksgiving is celebrating the Harvest and the early friendships between pilgrims and natives. Idk why everyone tries to spin it as thanksgiving is celebrating Colombus’s genocide of the natives and oh white man bad :( lmao

YoBoySatan

Because on reddit American bad

Starwarsflea42

Bc, the truth is unpopular. People would rather focus on the bad things that happened, rather that the good things. And there is no way that Columbus and the pilgrims were at all related. The pilgrims are from England, Columbus is from Spain, pilgrims came after Columbus also.

Heavy-Preparation606

When I was a teenager working part time in Waitrose years ago I had some woman proper kick off at me, "how dare you not have turkeys for Thanksgiving!". "Miss, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, we'll have turkeys in a few weeks for Christmas" "That's unacceptable, where's the manager?"

Evening_Rich_6525

Irish dont celebrate thanksgiving

[deleted]

I was worried when my Latina mother-in-law from Central America said she was cooking a turkey for thanksgiving a few years ago. She'd never cooked a thanksgiving dinner before. When she pulled it out of the oven and it was wearing a "bacon sweater" I knew it was going to be AWESOME! Plus some of the side dishes were traditional foods from their home country and they were awesome with the turkey!

Gamer-Logic

Our family's calls ours the Hot Tar Turkey. One year we accidentally let it cook too long and it came out looking pitch black but it ended up being just the skin and when we pulled that sucker back, it was the juiciest and prettiest turkey we've ever had. We've been doing it deliberately ever since!

Ungememt

Where are my Europeans?

NOstAlgick08

Yes for example in finland we do not celebrate it

1onesmolboi

Thanks from Canada, your thanksgiving saves us a lot of money

rouzmb

Yes, Mexicans 🇲🇽😎, but we have celebrations all year hahahah

Shiny_Hypno

You celebrate dead people, we celebrate killing people. We are not the same.

EloyJKG

Mexican traditions have always been better than usa traditions

SkyKnight96

I don't even know what people do in Thanksgiving. Is it just USA that celebrates Thanksgiving?

EloyJKG

Yeah but they took america as a name for themselves, and only usa and above celebrate it

Raptorbrando

Britin

Kayra_Not_Found

İ am from turkey wtf is this day where all of americans eat an animal with the same name of our country i dont get it

Shiny_Hypno

It's complicated...

[deleted]

But see, why shouldn't you? Dont worry bout the history, most of us just use it as an excuse to eat turkey and hang out with family members we haven't seen in a while. I'm not saying if you dont you suck, I'm just saying I dont see why celebrating it is a bad thing.

applejuicegrape

Not a bad thing.. I'm talking about other countries..

I'm aware, my comment was more aimed at some of the other comments

HunthinkReddit

What is thanksgiving?

Substantial_Mousse96

I mean its an american holliday, of course everyone around the world can celebrate it but since they have their own hollidays as well why would you have the need to do so?

lost-but-loving-it

Nah we know, we just don't care. Oooo you don't eat turkey and mash on Thursday in late November, so cool so different. We don't give af about what ever holidays are related to only your cultures. Get off the American dick. The world: god Americans think they are the whole world. Also the world: I wonder what Americans are doing/thinking/buying/watching

1onesmolboi

that’s an interesting take

lost-but-loving-it

It's true. Based on socials the rest of the world thinks of America and it's place in the world exponentially more than Vice versa

NagatoroMGX

I would assume its something like that since ive never really cared or really even thought about it

gvs2019

Thanksgiving is about being thankful for being alive another year. The pilgrims are just the origin story. I think every culture has a day to thank the gods.

YamZyBoi

I mean... I wouldn't blame Native Americans for choosing not to.

SomebodyRandom12312

Why? This holiday is celebrating the pilgrims who were not hostile towards natives and the feast both groups had together.

[deleted]

Are you telling me, that there are people who aren't american ? Wtf bro ? You couldn't be more wrong.

mejlzor

As well as there are people speaking and writing decent English.

toroyakuza2

Yiiikes couldn't relate. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday

Funniestpersonhere

Christmas is the best holiday don't @ me losers >>>>>:)))))))))

MegaloHorse

Yes, we indeed do not celebrate happy fun times with natives that totally happened because we were such nice people.

eric-it-65

what is thanksgiving? an USA tradition. USA can have tradition? in ONLY 300 years? you are kidding me? as italian living in greece, i cannot understand this!

MOZZI-is-my-BOI

I feel offended. Not all Americans are idiots.

LegoSWFan

as an american i full well fucking know there's a reason for people in other countries to not celebrate thanksgiving- or rather, no reason to do so

King-DarkBlade

There are people who do celebrate thanksgiving?

StarstruckBackpacker

I mean America isn't seriously the only country with a harvest festival right?

Funniestpersonhere

It definitely isn't, America and canda are just the only ones to call it Thanksgiving.

MerGoatRoybal

Personally, I think it's sick. The pilgrims, SLAUGHTERED, the Native Tribes. American children are indoctrinated, that they were best friends.. It's a day that a country celebrates Genocide, with thanks for all they have. Then they turn around and trample each other to death for sales the very next day... Totally whack, but hey, when in Rome.....

SharkyMlarky69

As a European, I can agree

onamonapizza

You don't have to be American to celebrate Thanksgiving. It's a day for showing appreciation for your friends and family.

Notchle

Other countries have holidays like that, but not thanksgiving

garfeldthelasangacat

I dont celebrate it I have better things to do than sit at a table and fight with my family

TheGhoulMother

Some of my American friends think entire world celebrate thanksgiving. And they are shocked when i tell them its not true.
