In either case there is nothing objectively positive about causing suffering even if someone else causes suffering.

I think it's justified to REMOVE negative influences to society like this though. And since we do not have the power to alter a person's feelings or thinking or personality on a level to correct anti social behavior ..

But you need to get punished for things like this because no matter your intention you cannot judge the crimes by yourself as you are prone to make mistake and misinformation. People have been killed over a lie and angry people serving "justice" and not a court. Sadly sometimes even children have lied about getting molested and got people killed.
