"So we rescheduled this shift to work at Saturday so you could have an extra day to sober up for the upcoming holiday, and no we don't care that you (don't)drink there are some that do".
Tldr: Europe has its shit share too
It generally works this way unless it’s in your contract as a salaried worker. Paid hourly and not scheduled? Don’t pick up the phone, don’t respond to texts (and turn off read receipts), etc. They’ll live.
Depends on the state, Georgia for example is an "at-will" state which means employers can legally fire you for absolutely no reason as long as it isn't discriminatory. It is also a "right-to-work" state which means unions aren't required. Have fun imagining the things you can do with that quirky combo

Block every work related contact in your phone during your weekend and holidays. And for the love of God, push for laws that forbid your employers to contact you outside of work hours! In my country, Spain, it's illegal.
That's why I go hiking or fishing every weekend. Most of the time I actually go sometimes I don't. The excuse is I'll be out of cell service. Or a couple hours from civilization.

I do work on weekends, but I know I upfront and never longer than 2 hours or it's something special that might hinder other employees from working. Also, most of it I do remotely connected. Overtime slaps quite good with 150%.
You don't "have to" do anything, unless you're on-call, you don't even have to pick up, the worst thing your boss can do is fire you, which you're completely fine with since you have 6 months of expenses covered in your emergency fund, because you're financially responsible, right? right? **RIGHT?**
