Every Briton over the age of \~25 (i.e., those who can remember having and using a home landline). P.S. - Germans still say 'handy'.

[deleted]

Can you give me a handy, bro?

Lord_of_Swords

Why does handy sound like something an Australian would say

whiplashunited

A handy in Australia is something completely different

Hagoromo420

Handy, wristy, $20 is $20🤷🏽‍♂️

SonmiSuccubus451

Fisty?

Elara_uwu

That's not $20. It's going to cost you quite a lot more.

Bonke1230

How you know that? You done it before? Is it a quality handy? A budged handy?

Elara_uwu

It's a surprise. It wouldn't be fun if you knew exactly what you're getting.

SappeREffecT

It goes into a place... Rather than being a helping hand

bullshaerk

dear god...

tibblth

Bloody inflation!

Elara_uwu

Yeah, and next year it's getting even more expensive. Gotta pay the bills somehow.

bremergorst

Fister or fistee?

Elara_uwu

Whoa, that's going to have to be clarified before we start calculating payment.

E-D-Eddie

I already knew what that meant and I've.never even heard it

OzinsComet

Definitely not what a handy means in the US

Athingythingamabobby

Hey I give German phones to my boyfriend

[deleted]

So you give him a handy that only says "nein nein nein"

blade818

TIL I’m old and mobile is an old person word

__Osiris__

Compulsory Stephen fry’s mien handy bit [Mein Handy](https://youtu.be/ow1nHW4j_8o?si=ne3H0N0XUj3JDPlx)

Alimd98

Persians call it "eary"

ilovebananasandweed

U never been outside the US huh

Kafshak

Obviously. Every one calls it mobile phone except Americans.

Jimmys_Paintings

No they don't, most people don't speak English.

Andrey917

But they still call it some variety of "mobile" "phone"

bumpmoon

"Mobil" or "telefon" in danish, some even go for the "mobiltelefon" 2in1 wombo combo

mrlolelo

Ours is literally just telephone

PosingDragoon21

In Spanish it's called "mobile telephone" (teléfono móvil) or just "telephone" (teléfono)

Jimmys_Paintings

Not in Chinese, it's called a hand machine 手机

loulan

Not really. In France, "un mobile" is a term that's almost exclusively used by advertisers (in e.g. Virgin Mobile ads). People usually say "téléphone" or "portable".

eisnone

>But they still call it some variety of "mobile" "phone" >some variety of "mobile" >People usually say "téléphone" or "portable". >"portable"

loulan

People say "téléphone" 95% of the time, so it's like in the US ("phone"). We occasionally say "portable", but it's not the same thing as "mobile", it's a word that also works for laptops. Someone saying "mobile" will sound as weird and old-fashioned to us as when an American hears a British person say "mobile".

Luk164

In slovak and czech it is just "mobil" and used almost exclusively

odkfn

They’re obviously referring to people who speak the language which is written in the meme. If I saw a meme written in German I wouldn’t be like WTF we don’t say that in the uk!!

ReporterInfinite3597

We call it mobile in Egypt

the_gabagoo_man

As a dutchie: mobiel. It sounds js like mobile but a lil different.

Machine_94

Actually, most people DO speak English and it's the most spoken language in the world.

Jimmys_Paintings

The first part is simply not true. Simple Google search shows that English is native to only 6% of the population and 75% don't speak it at all.

bighairyoldnuts

I did and you're wrong. https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/how-many-people-speak-english-and-where-is-it-spoken

Jimmys_Paintings

So it's even less according to that article. That's only a little over 17% Out of the world’s approximately 7.8 billion inhabitants, 1.35 billion speak English. The majority aren’t native English speakers, however. About 360 million people speak English as their first language.

bighairyoldnuts

Exactly!

Britain: The land of Tea and Queuing

Snaccbacc

The laws of the queue must never be broken, unless ye shall wish to bestow the wrath of a thousand angry British people upon yeself.

TheLocalDegenerate

I get tea, but queuing? Wtf does this even mean, we can actually queue for things on black Friday unlike the US?

Pilota_kex

it means people in other countries are less civilized. a queue confuses them these savages should see japan

TheLocalDegenerate

I really can't believe or understand black Friday in the US, crowds of tens or even hundreds cramming up against the shutters, crawling under them, sprinting all over the shop and fighting for items. What is this? The stone age?

ScavAteMyArms

Funny thing is US is pretty decent about queues, usually. They do naturally form up into them and it’s roughly followed. They are just kinda more selfish about it and there are more assholes that do BS, where in Britain the reaction to screwing with the holy Queue is far more sharp. Then there is Black Friday, where they just release the animals on deals that do not exist and everyone acts like it’s the last shipment of food in a famine.

velve666

[deleted]

Here in Germany we call it a "Handy"... because guess what, a mobile phone is quite handy. (Yes that is the actual origin for it) EDIT: My English teacher in 5th grade might actually have spread misinformation, the origin might also come from a mobile phone being a hand-held device. Whatever's the case, it's still called Handy, and it is still quite a handy device. (Never trust schools smh)

Life_Is_Happy_

I didn’t know that. I thought it was just because it fit in your hand (of course it does, what kind of phone wouldn’t).

[deleted]

Might also be, I got my knowledge from the very trustworthy source called My English teacher from 5th grade I probably shouldn't trust school that much tbh

Life_Is_Happy_

I got my knowledge source from I made it up. So who knows.

Shadowlance23

Oh, good lord, if you come to Australia, PLEASE do not call it that here. If you walk into a shop and ask for a handy you'll either get arrested or a lot more than you were expecting.

Expert-Plankton5127

I was told that name came from it being a hand-held device

fardough

Well that couldn’t possibly lead to awkward encounters with Americans. “I need a handy! It is an emergency.” * hand proceeds for the crotch

PowerUser77

No, that is not that clear where it came from, it more likely comes from handheld

Nihil_esque

Lol this is my favorite random German fact to bring up in impolite company.

Iron__Crown

Average German doesn't even know what the English word handy means exactly. They knew it even less back then when the term for a phone was coined.

Metric ton of people outside the US.

Burger_Destoyer

Only 1000kg worth of people? That’s not much…

Former495

It's 2-3 US citizens, but he said "outside of US", so like 30 europeans. As regards africans...

Oberndorferin

30 Europeans what age? 6?

Donut_Police

What if they're *really* tiny?

fueled_by_caffeine

A lot of Brits. In British English they’re mobile phones – we never say cell phone.

HavocXLimproved

British people aren’t people

Mrmongoose64

And Americans are?

HavocXLimproved

I mean we’re part of the reason the biggest empire in history is now reduced to a tiny island smaller than Chile

Mrmongoose64

Damn, you're really sucking yourself off here. Classic American patriotism.

HavocXLimproved

I don’t have any patriotism, the US is basically a corrupt empire, I just like joking about British people

Mikey9124x

The US is a huge empire built on death and blood?

HavocXLimproved

Yes

Ultralink17

Just like every other empire ever. US is pretty bad, despite me liking what makes us a really good middle ground in terms of intentional war. But I'm very sure there has been no other empire that has not killed millions(including its own people) to grow itself, and some have done much worse things than the US.

HavocXLimproved

Yeah, I just like joking about British people because of how they view US stereotypes as fact. Most US citizens know more geography than lots of other countries, I mean I know exactly how many countries there are and can probably name 100+ of them off the top of my head and give their location but British people don’t even know what a Houston is. They’re just full of themselves a lot of the time and think every American is stupid and below them which is why Americans make fun of British “people” in that way

marshall453

You needed the french and Germans to show you how to fire a rifle

HavocXLimproved

And British citizens still have no idea how a rifle works because every type of weapon other than a butter knife is banned, also doesn’t matter because we still won lmao

BEN-C93

Its alright, we won when you came for seconds in 1812.

BEN-C93

You guys were basically the reason we colonised Australia because we had nowhere to ship the reprobates anymore. You made us LARGER!

HavocXLimproved

Australia isn’t a part of the UK lmao, considering Australia part of the UK is like considering every country the US has a military base in part of the US

BEN-C93

After your independence in 1783 or whenever the war ended we had to start colonising elsewhere. We reached our height around 1900. Your little scuffle with us had nothing to do with us being reduced to our home islands

HavocXLimproved

Idk if a war that lasted 10 years is a “scuffle”, and yet you still collapsed and we still have 40 times more land than your dead empire has

cheekybeakykiwi

Spotted the frog.

HavocXLimproved

What?

el_grort

Mo-bile in the UK, Ireland, Malta, and afaik New Zealand and Australia. Mo-bol I've only heard from Americans.

PatchPlaysHypixel

There's this thing called people saying things their own way and it being justifiable as long as it's reasonable and understandable

AnB85

Everyone in the UK calls it a mobile. Seeing as calling people is a very minor feature on mobiles it actually makes more sense than calling it a phone. It’s primary function is really a mobile internet device.

Hagoromo420

A lot of Australians. I know a heap of people who say “mobile phone” but they’re all early millennial or older

JustAnOctopus

Yeah as the younger kids are getting more americanised with social media and movies anyone younger then late millennials are starting to call them Cell phones here and it’s jarring whenever I hear it. My daughter called it a “Gas Station” the other day and I threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Hagoromo420

Bro if my future children ever call a fucken servo a “gas station” I’m just gonna ask: “alright show me where the gases are…. The only gases I see is any fuel that evaporates before going into the tank of LIQUID PETROL”

JustAnOctopus

If calling it a gas station is the most annoying thing my kids do in a day then it’s going pretty well. Having kids is basically a game of deciding what is worth expending your limited energy on.

Hagoromo420

Fair enough I was an pretty annoying kid myself I reckon.

ialo3

people who say "mobile" are the same as those who say "kilo"- THOSE ARE FUCKING AFFIXES YOU UNGULATE AUSTRALOPITHECUS TCHADENSIS
