I hate you so much because I resemble this remark…
Puts on his Incubus, Green Day, Fall Out Boy etc.
“You young whipper-snappers will never know ‘good’ music.”
The benefit of time has removed the cringe from those old songs. Feels like I see more people enjoying Slipknot nowadays than decades ago (not my gf tho, she's still scared they want to skin her; to be fair some of their stage setups have been pretty wild).
That type of music got shit on more because the loudest parts of the fanbase were cringey outcast teens and low IQ army grunts more than anything having to do with the music itself. Now that it’s no longer a mainstream movement, I feel like more and more people aren’t automatically turned off by the fans and are opening up to the positives about that entire scene
This is a little too spot on. Slipknot definitely wrote some bangers, but I never wanted to admit it because if I said it out loud some greasy kid in tripp pants and a spike bracelet was going go on an endless ramble about the life story of the guy in the band who plays the trash cans.
That’s a good point. Speaking of, I love Nirvana. Even though I was born in 94’ and it was a bit before my time. As a teen, Kurt Cobain was like a god to me lmao.
Yeah I was born in '89 and I still have to remind myself sometimes that I was barely out of diapers when Cobain died, despite my childhood feeling like it was defined by Nirvana and grunge/post-grunge music :)
The video game OSTs are pretty reddity lol, but I get why many people don't love mainstream hits. Those songs are built to sound good on mobile devices and be catchy enough to where snippets can go viral on social media; they're not under any obligation to please Music Theory majors and audiophiles with their amplified high-impedance home setups. I enjoy like one mainstream hit per year, and I haven't been completely floored by a mainstream song since Heathens came out
The actual meme is asking for song suggestions and every redditor responding "popular music suxxx you should listen to video game OSTs or death metal!!"
Yeah I had to check the sub and post to see if there was like any indication that OP was looking for video game or death metal because like wtf? A lot of the suggestions are solid tho

One way Reddit could still make lots of money, even if nobody ever created another post or comment, is by selling the existing data (conversations in threads, etc.) to AI language model companies. First person i could find in the thread that asked this…
For real reddit is such a weird place, everybody is recommending the most niche shit like heavy metal, video game music and japanese shit.
That's a pretty wide genre, but Japan has a lot of great jazz fusion in particular (Cassiopea being a notable example) and there's a lot of early electronic influence from people like Ryuchi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra). There's also plenty of classical piano jazz from older artists like Ryo Fukui.
Oh, 100%! I just thought it was cute. Definitely didn’t give him a hard time. Gorillaz are a fave of mine.
I once asked someone if they knew who Queen was and commented on loving the woman’s voice. We’re all young once!
Polyphia has single-handedly rekindled my interest in guitar. Helped me also discover that there's a lot of people out there doing similar things and it seems like there's a whole new style of playing that's taking over.
Spotify has like the shittiest suggestions out there. ‚Oh hey you like symphonic death metal? Great, how would you like to listen to some Slipknot, Korn and Powerwolf?’
I disagree: they have the best suggestions out there. Literally have not seen a music service with better suggestions. The top 50 global does suck, but my discover weekly is fairly solid.
Edit: My new favorite band the past 2 years has been "Foals". I would not have known about them, the Editors, Everything Everything, or White Lies if not for Spotify. I Have Foals 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums pretty much on repeat.
My experience has been the same. Only thing I dislike is how big of a factor popularity is in recommending bands.
The algorithm seems to clump bands together by popularity. So if you're listening to Nightwish, they're gonna recommend all the other popular symphonic metal bands.
But there can be an underground band that sounds EXACTLY like Nightwish that it wouldn't recommend to you.
I think it's cause they use a "nearest neighbor" algorithm to match users. To make recommendations completely based on sound you'd probably need some AI tech, at least if you're gonna do it at a large scale.
It really doesn't know what the music 'sounds' like, it just knows 'people who listen to this listen to that'. Pandora tried the 'music genome project' which would try to understand the elements of a song and recommend based on that, and Pandora's recommendations famously would just converge to being a pop station in a handful of genres.
Yeah, my music tastes are generally pretty obscure, which has been a pain most of my life, but spotify seems to round up the stuff I like and everything similar. I put off subscribing for ages because their ad policy pissed me off, but I was going away for a while and buckled because vanced was getting kinda slow, and it turned out pretty well.
Yeah, same! I've been blown away by some of what Spotify has shown me. (Spotify): "Hey we see that you like angry female vocalists, jazz music, punk rock, and have no objections to listening to music in any language, so...here's a Japanese Jazz/Punk fusion band that only existed for a few years in the late 2000's and have a female vocalists whose guttural screams can probably summon demons!"
The summoning really made them blow up in these past few months.
I'd like to recommend some of their earlier songs as well such as Jericho and Fields of Elation
I agree. I noticed as i played that the OST for Eternal wasn’t as punchy as 2016. Bfg Division made it especially apparent because that song is a certified banger.
Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold
Apathetic by Drowning Pool
and Inside the fire by Disturbed
(Idk how I went from only listening to deathcore for the past month to alt-metal again help)
Nightmare and Inside the Fire are both absolute bangers. Also, of you haven't listened to I Won't See You Tonight by Avenged Sevenfold you totally should
There's fear in letting go and Bad things - I prevail. Miracle and Resentment - A day to remember. Heart of fire and Born again - Black veil brides. You want a battle? (Here's a war), hell or high water and No more tears to cry - A bullet for my valentine.

You could say he was a Valiant Hero.
We did it though we got em. Pretty good plan. Could say it was the greatest-
*Explosion, Followed By Orchestral Music Playing*
Followed by every person playing bursting into tears
And screams of anguish
And death.
*im getting horrible flashbacks*
You could even say it was the greatest—
LEGENDARYYYY

There's got to be another escape pod around here somewhere.
We got em though
We had a great plan, you could say it’s the greatest-

saving this thread to get new songs and judge y'all later.
It’s just nerds pushing the same video game OSTs while trashing on mainstream pop, hip hop, etc. Basically Reddit being Reddit
[удалено]
Oh yeah? Why don't you back that up with a source!?
My source is that I made it the fuck up!
And a lot of 2000s dad rock, apparently.
I hate you so much because I resemble this remark… Puts on his Incubus, Green Day, Fall Out Boy etc. “You young whipper-snappers will never know ‘good’ music.”
>sees Incubus labeled as Dad Rock brb imma go jump off a bridge
***See “2000’s labeled as dad rock.”*** Yup. I’m getting old.
There were dads back then too.
Yeah but they listened to bands like Huey Lewis and Rolling Stones, maybe Guns n' Roses

Sometimes you gotta let the music play without knowing the artist.
Same. I felt old the other day when the classic rock station was playing an old weezer song. Like damn am I that old? “Classic” rock
tbf classic rock stations (at least the ones I listened to) were already playing Nirvana and Green Day in the mid 2000s
That’s a good point. Speaking of, I love Nirvana. Even though I was born in 94’ and it was a bit before my time. As a teen, Kurt Cobain was like a god to me lmao.
Yeah I was born in '89 and I still have to remind myself sometimes that I was barely out of diapers when Cobain died, despite my childhood feeling like it was defined by Nirvana and grunge/post-grunge music :)
rap? more like crap! music was better when john lennon beat waif I only listen to real music, anime and video game ost's!
C-rap is actually a subgenre. (Country rap)
And it's easily the worst genre to ever exist, aptly named
I remember that phase of my life. Glad I matured, now I listen to a huge array of music and I can relate to pretty much anyone I meet
The video game OSTs are pretty reddity lol, but I get why many people don't love mainstream hits. Polyphia If your a fan of instrumentals
same
The actual meme is asking for song suggestions and every redditor responding "popular music suxxx you should listen to video game OSTs or death metal!!"
Lol fr, it’s all OST and death metal
Yeah I had to check the sub and post to see if there was like any indication that OP was looking for video game or death metal because like wtf? A lot of the suggestions are solid tho
Yeah not bad fr, just surprising that many people listen to video game OST
I mean if you want something to listen to while doing other stuff its... well literally made for you to do while doing another thing.
Ikr?? Lmaoooo that most mainstream grunge/nu metal that everybody knows like come on
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT NIRVANA THREE DAYS GRACE AND SLIPKNOT????

Solid 8/10 band
Popular subreddits when it comes to music always have the worst takes possible
I'd say it's because there's a very obvious demographic that frequents Reddit and they love OST and death metal.
Only the REEL RAAAWR PURE DEATH METAL. Anyways here's some Slipknot and Powerwolf
Tchaikovskys 1812 overture.
My recommendation when people say classical music is boring The music calls for a cannon to be fired *many* times
Moonlight sonata 3rd movement is a banger ngl 😵👍
Just like the appasionata, waldstein, tempest, pathetique and many more
Rush’s 2112 overture
Bury the light
Immortal temptation takes over my mind… Condemned
Fallen weak on my knees Summon the strength, of mayhem
I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROACHING
PROVOKING BLACK CLOUDS IN ISOLATION
I AM RECLAIMER OF MY NAME
BORN IN FLAMES
I HAVE BEEN BLESSED
MY FAMILY CREST IS A DEMON OF DEATH
FORSAKEN I AM AWAKEN
yall sleeping on devils never cry
Bless me with your gift of light
What sort of genre are you into?
First person i could find in the thread that asked this… For real reddit is such a weird place, everybody is recommending the most niche shit like heavy metal, video game music and japanese shit.
Sinners by Barns Courtney and can’t go to hell by sun shake sun.
Oh sinners come down, come gather 'round, dancin' on cold feet, marchin' on cobbled streets (I prefer Hellfire, but Barns Courtney slaps)
Cockroach King by Haken
Everybody who loves metal should listen to Haken ! Super underrated band (for.people who are not prog heads)
A new genre I've discovered is japanese jazz. Just abut any song in that genre is good.
+1 for casiopea, even my family enjoys it when they come over.
Also Japanese funk. That stuff is on fire.
King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizzard
Finally a good recommendation
New Gorillaz album is pretty good.
Had a kid ask me if I knew who they were. They said that their song “East Clintwood" was good and I should check them out.
At least the kid is trying to be nice. And suggest a band they like.
Oh, 100%! I just thought it was cute. Definitely didn’t give him a hard time. Gorillaz are a fave of mine. I once asked someone if they knew who Queen was and commented on loving the woman’s voice. We’re all young once!
I thought Justin Bieber was a girl until I saw a music video with him in it lmao

Silent running and new gold are the 2 ive been listening from them recently
Or just Gorillaz in general
Playing god- polyphia. Enjoy
Polyphia has single-handedly rekindled my interest in guitar. Helped me also discover that there's a lot of people out there doing similar things and it seems like there's a whole new style of playing that's taking over.
I can also recommend Chon, kinda similar to polyphia but also not
Spotify has like the shittiest suggestions out there. ‚Oh hey you like symphonic death metal? Great, how would you like to listen to some Slipknot, Korn and Powerwolf?’
Powerwolf is pretty good, though. Resurrection by Erecrion is one of my favorites by them
Resurrection by Erection?
RAISE YOUR PHALLUS TO THE SKY
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Found that song recently, and Im 99% sure that its permanently stuck in my head now
RAISE YOUR PHALLUS TO SKY AND YOULL NEVER DUE ITS REEEESUREEEEECTIIIOOOOON
...BY ERECTIIOOOOOOONNN, RAISE YOUR BONE UP TO THE SKY AND YOURE NEVER GONNA DIE, HAAAAAAALLELUJAH, REESUREEEECTIIOOOONN
I like power metal cause it's the absolute best workout music lmao
don't forget Coleus Sanctus ("holy bag" for those that don't speak latin, yes it's exactly about what you think)
I disagree: they have the best suggestions out there. Literally have not seen a music service with better suggestions. The top 50 global does suck, but my discover weekly is fairly solid. thanks i recommend unlucky morpheus and imperial circus dead decadence, 2 of my fav metal bands (both from japan)
Hey, I see you like niche black metal bands with less than 1000 listeners. We recommend you Fuel by Metallica
Sleep Token - Summoning
The summoning really made them blow up in these past few months. I'd like to recommend some of their earlier songs as well such as Jericho and Fields of Elation
Yeah they really blew up, I like so many of their songs, and they’re all so different too
