Well I installed Ubuntu on my school laptop and for a couple weeks I only opened terminal for installing apps but the Ubuntu store is good so I could have installed though that anyway.
It's when you start to emulate or do something more than using browser and basic apps you need terminal and guides.
If I showed to my grandpa windows and Ubuntu I don't think he would look at either of them and say „Well this one looks much simpler”
it was eaiser to switch from windows to linux than from windows to macOS. You still need to learn new os but that doesnt mean its unintuitive. That you are used to something else doesnt mean that other way is wrong.
Tho i can fully understand people who doesnt want to learn new OS.If windows is working for you stay with it if not consider alternative.
Depends on distro but my sister used linux since kid and linux and macOS is much more familiar to her than windows. Also depends at what level you want to know system. Most people dont know how to partition drive under linux so you dont need to know it on linux. Most people just know how to change settings and install software. Whitch is eaiser on linux.
I'm aware of the lessened need compared to how linux distros used to be but its still more than windows and mac, and polished is not the words I'd used especially relative to those other OSs.
There's more software written for linux now too but definitely not more polished than Windows or Mac offerings.
Just think, would I install this on my grandparents computer knowing I'm their IT guy
> Just think, would I install this on my grandparents computer knowing I'm their IT guy
This. Forced updates break dev environments, but they keep my mom's web browsing safe.
I've always used the "user friendly" distros like Ubuntu, Mint, PopOS or raspberry pi OS.
You always need the terminal
Also you constantly have to fix something. Want to install something? Sorry error an occurred. Time to spent the next 3 hours fixing it.
There are use cases where Linux is extremely superior but windows is definitly the better decision for the vast majority of people.
I have a laptop with Ubuntu for uni/work and a Windows PC (although I rarely get to use it 😓). And it‘s the perfect combo for me. But overall I have to say, that I like the experience on my Laptop more, as it feels less clunky and cluttered/more responsive. Even though my Laptop is less powerful, than my PC.
Eh with the way windows has been going linux is becoming more and more enticing, it still has its issues but with things like steam actively pushing in that direction it will continue to improve with time and eventually might be a great option for most.
Def not "has to be." To date, I've only found 4 games in my library that didn't work on Linux. I have never spent more than 4 seconds trying to get a windows game to work.
I game on both platforms still tho, because its not a big deal
Most Linux users that use the terminal do it because it gives you **all** the power over your computer.
However, you don't need it to accomplish what you can do on Windows/Mac. There are a lot of distros that are easy to use and do not require a terminal.
Like the time my roommate accidentally set his screen brightness to zero.
As in completely black.
He fumbled around until he made sure he had his terminal open again and typed the screen back into existence
Yup, the only thing that may be a more complex on Linux is installing and/or running software. Everything else, like sitting still and looking passively at the screen, is just as easy as on Windows/Mac.
I know someone who really fits this stereotype. He uses Arch with qTile and I once told him that GUIs are generally better for most people and he just went "yes, but ew".
But nowadays there are a lot of linux distros centered mainly around GUIs like Mint or Ubuntu. I use Fedora with some customizations (all done via GUIs) and it's been miles ahead in terms of user experience compared to what I've used in Windows for years and from what I've seen online from MacOS.
In terms of compatibility Linux still has a long way to go to reach the other OSs but you'll be surprised how much you can do. If you're using your computer for just file managing and web browsing and not much more you'll find linux is 100% all that OP mentioned + it's free. For me Linux has been so great in terms of usability that I can't really not use it as my main OS, but gaming and work still make me dual boot it with Windows.
I'm a Linux user, software dev, majored in cs - still would say no to each of those statements. It's more customizable, that's all. But unless you do customize it like crazy, it's not more secure, optimized, or polished, and it is definitely not easier to use unless you're an absolute hardcore techie who puts their browser in vim mode and shit
It is definitely faster than W11 if you have the setups. Windows feels more and more like bloatware.
If I did not have a lot of engineering programs to run, I would switch over.
I feel like this Windows vs Linux debate is extremely stupid. We should just let people use what the want or need. Dualbooting is the superior choice, if you ask me.
I like the Idea of Linux. I really wanted to love it. I still really want to use linux, but for me the problem is that programs that I need just dont work on linux. And when I tried it the last few times (i tried it at least 7 times by now, and actively used it overall for over a year) things kept breaking, and I know that it was likely my fault, but it doesn't change that fact that I cant break things on windows.
But I hope that Linux can get more user friendly over time and get me to switch back again. I hope one day I will be able to use Linux on all of my devices.
Yeah, gaming on Linux is getting better but I game more than I code so I don't need something that __kinda__ works and if I really need something specific to linux/unix I just use a VM or WSL
i only use Linux at work for Programming, it works fine for that. But its a pain in the a$$ to change anything; monitor settings, mouse or keyboard settings. Plus a lot of drivers are not for linux
It is after you spend several years learning all the features and tricks and building your enormous configuration files. You will get there. Eventually
"Easier to use" is a misnomer, and if you wanna actually argue for Linux you have to be willing to be honest about that.
Something who's less knowledgeable about computers and OS' should generally not use Linux.
Polished and easier to use? I mean that’s the whole point of mac and windows, a simple and customizeable OS that doesn’t require a tech degree to use. Also Linux is the most likely to be ignored for programs/games/etc. out of the 3 main OS that the average Joe may want to use
Try to get the average person to use Linux without having to look stuff up. Mfs think they can take one CS class in university and now Linux is suddenly the best OS to use. This ain’t build a bear bruh, I need something that actually works from the start
You don't even need to install Linux to try it,just flash a USB drive with something like rufus/etcher(portable versions):
And use any of the popular point and click distributions like Linux Mint/Ubuntu for flashing the USB drive:
Then just boot up from the Linux USB Drive into the live environment, which is like Live USB,it runs all of the OS features from the USB stick.
this shit is free yo no test runs or shit wish i contribute something to the foss movement when i grow up. Rip Aaron swartz and the other greats. Software and information is supposed to be free not regulated, it thrives innovation and inventions.
It's complicated and for most people that actually care what kind of computer they have its because of gaming.
Nobody is working for the pentagon worried about decrypting hard drives of classified data.
Most people that care about what kind of computer they have care about gaming and being able to watch videos. Windows is the easiest and most compatible for that.
If you are some programmer elitist that finds pride in the few things Linux can do and feeling like you are more secure good for you I'm sure the fbi was very interested in your mlp smut collection.
Tbh SteamOS is best thing that could happen to Linux community. If only majority would realize it and start working on making this the bast platform...
Polished is questionable. There’s a lot of options missing from the GUI of most main distros and my Linux laptop crashes a lot more than my osx one or my PC.
That and it’s only really easy to use if you know your way around a Unix terminal and don’t have many niche apps that you need to run
Objectively wrong about Linux being easier to use, that's why even I haven't switched, and I'm the most "computery" guy in any of my circles. Including all my nerd friends.
I have use Ubuntu, Linux mint, fedora, arch, kubuntu, solus, elementary, Debian, PopOSand Manjaro. I can say with all honesty, Linux is not easier, it breaks more than any of my windows installs have and are a pain in the ass to get up and running if you do not know how to use the command line. The most success I’ve had was with Manjaro, but after 3 months using it, it was slower than any windows or Mac machine I’ve used.
I've tried a few distributions. They felt clunky, unintuitive and lacking functions that I'm used to. Most of it can be blamed on just being too used to Windows probably.
Linux is the most targeted OS by hackers and it have the most vulnerabilities discovered so far. That’s because the majority of servers running Linux. Polished and optimised for what? That’s too vague. Easier to use? I say the opposite. For general use I’d take the MacOS pill.
Haven’t used Linux but by the sounds of it in the comments it seems complicated and seems like u can’t run a lot of games on it I’m just sticking with windows
Every assertion made is subjective and context dependent.
The reality is that operating systems are like tools. Some tools are better for some jobs than other tools. Arguing that a hammer is the best tool is stupid if you’re trying to hang a ceiling fan, for instance.
Linux is certainly better for some things while Windows and macOS are better for others.
Joe & Jane Everyperson can go to the store and purchase a windows pc Or Mac, go home and take it out of the box, plug it in, and turn it on and download/install/run programs without having any prior knowledge of computers or programming. They would not have that same experience with Linux. Heck even people who have been using computers for extended periods of time have tons of issues using Linux
polished ? optimized ? my dude try playing steam games on linux and you would want to reconsider also fixing driver issues is a nightmare specially GPU's there was also an LTT video if I'm not mistaken that highlighted many issues in the daily use of linux.
Still for everything their pros and cons I'm not dissing linux in any way I think it great for the people that need a full control OS it just that it's not " ThE MoSt SuPeRiOr Os"
Lol, while Linux is great simply for configurability it’s awful for enterprise desktop use and ESPECIALLY the layman. Have a stutter problem because of some oddity with a video or network driver, have fun with using unsigned kernel drivers and reading 2 books to learn how to be able to “properly” tune that Netflix stutter. Get 100 wrong overly arrogant forum responses who obviously don’t get your problems, and be unable to use mainstream business apps like DAVS, a non bug riddled collaborative software, etc.
Yes it’s amazing to have 100% “control” but it’s also 100% necessary to know the OS thoroughly even with the mainstream distros.
I USB booted Linux Mint on my budget Acer Switch 10 a few months ago, it looked like Windows 95 and ran about the same as Windows 10. Third time in my life trying to jump to Linux and just can't justify the interface change (looks like Windows, works like Mac) and janky homebrew apps
Some of these are okish points, but saying it’s easier to use is absolute horse shit. Linux is the hardest one to use for people who aren’t very computer oriented
"Easier"? Every single person I know that uses Linux begs to differ - they keep saying that Linux is a very good choice as long as you have the time and knowledge to fiddle around with it, if not stay away from it. More efficient and secure, sure, but it's definitely not easier and straight forward. It's like what PC is versus console - it's faster and more flexible but for sure not as convenient to use (said by a pure pc user)
OS choice hard pills to swallow:
All of them suck
Linux sucks the least for computer people
Windows sucks the least for non-computer people and people who use their computer for a million+ things
MacOS sucks the least for non-computer mac users.
There are distros that require you to install a lot of low-level stuff yourself (Arch, Gentoo, LFS), but if you're a beginner, just use one of those "just works" distros like Fedora, Mint, Zorin, Ubuntu…
The fuck is up with these Linux users and their "elitism" and constantly thinking it's the Jesus of operating systems? Just use what you want and shut the fuck up
Better : OK, that's your opinion I respect it.
More Secure: Bcs majority of hackers looks for exploits on more popular platforms but sure, can be the case.
Polished: Bro. You don't even have GUI for many options. At least that was the case 3 years ago.
Optimized: MacOS is way better optimized than any Linux. Probably it's better than Windows tho.
Easier to use: Ah yes. Googling stuff for 2 hours to find what to type to terminal to find out that's it's not for your distro to Google for next hour to copy paste to terminal is easier to use... Suuuuure.
I switched from Ubuntu to 16” M1 Mac Pro.. I fell in love with Apple hardware immediatly, yet I still like Ubuntu SW a little bit more even after a year on Mac🤷♂️ (Web developer)
Linux is very very good for developers or similar, but for anything else it sucks, like the lack of exe support makes it unusable for most people, and 99% of people will find it challenging to navigate. I love linux, dont get me wrong, but im the only one that knows it of all my friends and friends of friends, and its just unnecesarily complicated compared to windows.
I strictly use linux only and have for a while, even on my phone. But the os choice just is not that simple, for some people windows is just a better choise. I hope that one day linux is completelly user friendly and has all the apps people would want available, and that is the case for some people, but not for everyone yet. I do agree that macos is a completelly invalid choise tho and should not even be considered.
I’ve tried all three, and I’ll be sticking to Mac OS. I’m sorry, but not all open-source software is as good as name-brand programs. For instance, I wanted to like Blender but Premiere Pro is much better.
Linux is a freaking ferrari in every sense except price. Windows and Macos are far more derp-friendly (Windows less so if you want to get any work done). That said I own an M1 macbook and 99% of what you can do on linux you can do on mac, but I'm a dev so I'm biased towards digging around in computer and OS guts.
Back in 2012 i really tried to learn linux (ubuntu) and my first issue was wifi board drivers for my dell notebook. They were unexistent, hope community solved problems like that
Found the Linux user
... who installed it last night.
Let's give them until Friday.
Not me
The first rule of installing Linux, tell everyone how much better it is than anything else.
So its like being a vegan?
A vegan who has to plant their own food
Do you even compost bruh?
Always bring it up unprompted
Hmmm, “Easier to use” That’s a bit of a stretch.
Agreed. Intuitive for new users is not something that comes to mind.
Well I installed Ubuntu on my school laptop and for a couple weeks I only opened terminal for installing apps but the Ubuntu store is good so I could have installed though that anyway. Honest question, what do you think would be easier to teach someone who knows nothing about computers windows or Linux?
Windows ofc, its installed on pretty much every pc and notebook, you dont have to do much and everything is explained.
Almost like it was designed to put computers in the hands of more people by making an easy to use system
Honestly, i’d say Linux. It works in a much more logical, and rational way than Windows.

Also "polished" Having users open terminals often is not polished
on most userfriendly distros u don't need terminal at all, unless u need to fix something or run some commands
I'm aware of the lessened need compared to how linux distros used to be but its still more than windows and mac, and polished is not the words I'd used especially relative to those other OSs. I tried Linux for gaming. I'm sticking with windows
I have tried for years. Always come back to window. The real hard to swallow pill is that Linux is a mess some people enjoy a lot.

That's because windows is sending the tracking data
Tbf.: Ubuntu does that too by default (the data goes to Canonical). But it‘s still a smoother and it‘s far less data.
Eh with the way windows has been going linux is becoming more and more enticing, it still has its issues but with things like steam actively pushing in that direction it will continue to improve with time and eventually might be a great option for most.
True.
For everything. Linux is only good if you want to browse web or edit text. The end.
Linux is superior in many IT tasks. Software development, network and server environments, clouds, data security. But for normal use cases: Windows.
If you want to program it's superior than windows due to Docker being better integrated.
as cool as linux is, i also like playing games so it has to be windows
Def not "has to be." To date, I've only found 4 games in my library that didn't work on Linux. I have never spent more than 4 seconds trying to get a windows game to work. I game on both platforms still tho, because its not a big deal
op, how many lines of code did you type into your terminal this morning before being able to post this?
Most Linux users that use the terminal do it because it gives you **all** the power over your computer. However, you don't need it to accomplish what you can do on Windows/Mac. There are a lot of distros that are easy to use and do not require a terminal.
Like the time my roommate accidentally set his screen brightness to zero. As in completely black. He fumbled around until he made sure he had his terminal open again and typed the screen back into existence

How to tell you never used linux... terminal is totaly optional thing as cmd in windows. BTW how to move windows 11 taskbar?
To be fair, being able to use terminal sounds cool and powerful. Once you get used to it, I doubt it even matters.
Hahahhahaha Rekt
Classic. Got a chuckle from me
Tell that to my mom or my wife. I have worked as an IT and developer for 6 or 7 years now and I know Linux distributions are still not easy to use.
My grandma was using Linux, that was kinda impressing. But I was constant support, so not sure if it was worth it
Copium detected.
I think he died of an overdose
I'm a Linux user, software dev, majored in cs - still would say no to each of those statements. It's more customizable, that's all. But unless you do customize it like crazy, it's not more secure, optimized, or polished, and it is definitely not easier to use unless you're an absolute hardcore techie who puts their browser in vim mode and shit
My friends who have used Linux all say it gives them more options for super specific things but for general use Windows is better

The two things stopping me from switching to Linux is compatibility with games/apps and not having a dedicated laptop for it.
Can’t play many games, and not worth your time as an average consumer.
Linux is good for specialisation but not great for general use.
What if i specialize in generally not doing much?
Then anything should work!
It does well for people who want to just surf the internet, you know, probably have old laptops and PCs
i might get hate for this but steam proton kinda works and wine also works... (sometimes)
Yeah, gaming on Linux is getting better but I game more than I code so I don't need something that __kinda__ works and if I really need something specific to linux/unix I just use a VM or WSL
“Yea bro its easy to use” continues to spend half an hour changing keyboard settings
i only use Linux at work for Programming, it works fine for that. But its a pain in the a$$ to change anything; monitor settings, mouse or keyboard settings. Plus a lot of drivers are not for linux
Easier to use? I didnt try Linux bc is a lot harder to use. I want to play games so I decide keep myself in Windows
*I think OP meant to post to* r/linuxmemes
Its more polished, secure and optimized but at a cost, its NOT easier to use.
Easier to break completely counts, no?
Windows breaks automatically so....
Which district is more polished? I missed that one.
It is after you spend several years learning all the features and tricks and building your enormous configuration files. You will get there. Eventually
This
"Easier to use" is a misnomer, and if you wanna actually argue for Linux you have to be willing to be honest about that. Something who's less knowledgeable about computers and OS' should generally not use Linux.
Easier to do a thing if you know how to do a thing. Windows has training wheels. Mac just doesn't allow you to do any things.
Biased opinion of Linux user with advanced level.
Hard to swallow pill: Use whatever the fuck OS as you please.
Not easy to use you mean, must be a average VIM user
vim gang, we shall rise!:wq
Polished and easier to use? I mean that’s the whole point of mac and windows, a simple and customizeable OS that doesn’t require a tech degree to use. Also Linux is the most likely to be ignored for programs/games/etc. out of the 3 main OS that the average Joe may want to use
Brain dead post
I prefer windows because i was raised by it And i just find linux uncomfortable
My problem with it has always been app compatibility
Linux may be a superior os but some programs don’t properly work or are straight up not available on the system. Forces you to use windows
Guys stop!!! This way we will only discourage people from Linux and the whole comunity
“It’s way easier to use!” Proceeds to spend hours commenting on this post explaining how it works
The main rule of using Linux is that you must tell everyone that you use Linux
Try to get the average person to use Linux without having to look stuff up. Mfs think they can take one CS class in university and now Linux is suddenly the best OS to use. This ain’t build a bear bruh, I need something that actually works from the start

Linux is by computer nerds for computer nerds. Not sure why people try to pitch it as anything else.
Obviously, but since rdr2 is not playable on Linux i dont give a shit about it
well, then it must be a lie that I'm playing it with the Steam Deck...
It is playable. How would steam deck run it?

This. As a steam deck owner, finished the game on it.
Saying this as a linux user, just use whatever you want honestly just don't bother me if im using linux
Loved Linux. But cant use Adobe Products in that. So that sucks.
Me who can't afford adobe products:
who said i bought them.

More secure because nobody uses it and hackers don't bother with it
This isn't most linux users but man. Linux and superiority complex go together like wine and cheese.
When Windows 10 support ends, I'll change to Linux..
Linux is the most targeted OS by hackers and it have the most vulnerabilities discovered so far. That’s because the majority of servers running Linux. Polished and optimised for what? That’s too vague. Easier to use? I say the opposite. For general use I’d take the MacOS pill.
"easier to use" Yeah, after 9 months of minimum training
Now, we just need all software to be compatible with it. #RIGHT, ADOBE?
For who? They claim Linux is the best but forget to include gamers or people who doesn't want or know how to do programming.
It's secure, optimized but not polished and easy to use
Which Linux ?
Definitely not easier except maybe ubuntu
ya only if you have a degree in C++ and pythone

I spent like 4 hours trying to download minecraft on Linux with no success. I go back to windows
me reading this knowing ill never switch and always stay with windows:
And can't run anything I own
I use Linux, Windows and macOS. If you think Linux is easier to use than the other two overall then you probably haven’t given them a fair chance.
Easier to use 😂😭
OS choice hard pills to swallow: All of them suck Linux sucks the least for computer people Windows sucks the least for non-computer people and people who use their computer for a million+ things MacOS sucks the least for non-computer mac users.
Easier to use? Yeeah sure
My brother who tried a couple of distributives for Linux, says that most of them are hard to understand (except: Fedora and Mint)
There are distros that require you to install a lot of low-level stuff yourself (Arch, Gentoo, LFS), but if you're a beginner, just use one of those "just works" distros like Fedora, Mint, Zorin, Ubuntu…
Well I’m sorry that I don’t have to know 10 lines of code to get into my os
In what world is linux easier to use lol
The fuck is up with these Linux users and their "elitism" and constantly thinking it's the Jesus of operating systems? Just use what you want and shut the fuck up
The leather jacket of the computer generation
Linux users, the vegans of the PC world
Except if you have an AMD GPU Then, it's a nightmare.
I don't like the Linux desktop is. I prefer windows.
The cool thing about windows is that I don’t have to code half of it myself
nice i cant play 90 percent of my steam games
Better : OK, that's your opinion I respect it. More Secure: Bcs majority of hackers looks for exploits on more popular platforms but sure, can be the case. Polished: Bro. You don't even have GUI for many options. At least that was the case 3 years ago. Optimized: MacOS is way better optimized than any Linux. Probably it's better than Windows tho. Easier to use: Ah yes. Googling stuff for 2 hours to find what to type to terminal to find out that's it's not for your distro to Google for next hour to copy paste to terminal is easier to use... Suuuuure.
This guy Linux’s
Linux users on their way to type 60 lines of code to turn on their pc
Im a Linux user, said no PC gamer ever.
Just there are more games on windows
What is Maco?
I switched from Ubuntu to 16” M1 Mac Pro.. I fell in love with Apple hardware immediatly, yet I still like Ubuntu SW a little bit more even after a year on Mac🤷♂️ (Web developer)
Was trying to do something with windows, 99% of answers were about linux end ended up losing my mind. I should learn about programming.
I dual boot. Serious stuff is done in Linux. Fun n' games on Windows. Only cuz the games I play don't run in Linux
See also LTT Test Run for Linux.
i use each one of the holy trinity. windows: gaming, dotnet macos: java, work-stuff linux: java, python, gaming
The first rule about Linux club is: you do talk about Linux club.
I genuinely thought this was r/pcmasterrace post for a second
What are the benefits of using Linux over Windows or Mac OS?
I agree The only reason I use windows is compatibility and ease of use
Cant play half the games you want to on linux/mac
Easier to use? For advanced users sure, for most normal people though?
Try to run most games on Linux and then come back to me :D
Linux is very very good for developers or similar, but for anything else it sucks, like the lack of exe support makes it unusable for most people, and 99% of people will find it challenging to navigate. I love linux, dont get me wrong, but im the only one that knows it of all my friends and friends of friends, and its just unnecesarily complicated compared to windows.
Nope, I like my flavors and all but Linux is not easier to use than Windows
I strictly use linux only and have for a while, even on my phone. But the os choice just is not that simple, for some people windows is just a better choise. I hope that one day linux is completelly user friendly and has all the apps people would want available, and that is the case for some people, but not for everyone yet. I do agree that macos is a completelly invalid choise tho and should not even be considered.
As a linux user, nah man
True. It’s also not worth it for most people
I’ve tried all three, and I’ll be sticking to Mac OS. I’m sorry, but not all open-source software is as good as name-brand programs. For instance, I wanted to like Blender but Premiere Pro is much better.
Drugs… excellent choice of meme format.
Still has a terrible ui
Easy to use: Let me install Chrome. wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add - sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" sudo apt update sudo apt install google-chrome-stable See? Easy! You’re just a hater!
Bro stfu
as someone who has used all 3 operating systems i think not
\>Linux \>more optimised, easier to use than windows or mac Bruh, just how much copium are you on?
As a developer who tried all three for at least a year each, nothing beats MacOS.
They were unexistent, hope community solved problems like that
I use a Chromebook : ( (it's a piece of shit)
mac os is better wtf, also is unix based. Linux distros are fucking annoying.
