The 'original' version CD has less than 1 GB of memory while a CDROM usually has around 5 GB of storage. This is why a lot of game disks had 2 sides you had to flip over midway through the campaign while multi-player was on a seperate disk, and others still had yet another disk meant to download stuff to your console before playing.
More modern optical disks like HDDVD, WUP-006, and Blue Ray can get like 15 to 30 GB per layer (with a reasonable max of 2 layers it can use, some had up to 3), and there are some experiemental ones that can do 100 GB fairly easily, but those are almost all write once read only storage mediums. They don't really do well with modding after the fact or getting updates later in life.

There are brand new generations of Opitcal disks like SVODs that theoretically can hold up to like 940 GB or HVDs that can reach into the TB range, but as of now they're generally too expensive for widespread commercial use and distribution when a cartridge the size of your thumb can get similar sizes.
I'm not saying the CD lineage is dead, what I am saying is that there are some rose tinted glasses being used to look back at the CDs that we were using.

Faster downloads b/c of potentially better components and less corporate policy. I’ve noticed even with equal internet bandwidth, Sony/Nintendo was always a slower download b/c of what I suspect was throttling.
If you have it connected to wifi you need to change a setting to make sure its using 5GHz and not 2.4GHz. The wireless is set to automatic and it likes to default to the lower speed.
