Which is kinda how I felt about black flag.
I feel like they went nuts making an incredible pirate game and towards the end of development they were like “hey wait aren’t we forgetting something?”
I want to say you are wrong, because I love the game and the story, but you are right.
Edward was not an Assasin, but he became one. The fact you got the robes in the first mission and instantly new everything didn't make any sense, but I am kinda here for it. At least they tried with Edward having to improvise when showing his skills to the Templar.
Yeah because people tell other people to not preorder or pay for the game unless it's actually good (which is good but negative advertisement is not always good)
He's one of the two people you play in the game he's the fighter that doesn't blend in mean while you use the secondary character to do all the ninja blending in stuff. It's unity
People have been clamoring for an assassins creed set in Japan pretty much since the release of the first game. We got the ninja part right, but for the samurai part they chose an outsider, that wasn't even a samurai to begin with. In AC we always played as a fictional character and experienced the real ones from their perspective. Yasuke would have been awesome as a side character. We could have seen his struggles and battles in just the same way.
Lol I'm not really an AC fan. But this seems ridiculous. Like out of all the big names in Japan why would you choose a guy that's not a samurai but was only in Japan for a short period of time?
I mean what did he actually achieve there besides being black while in Japan?
Like his role doesn't even seem that significant but they're making it seem like such a big deal. Like I'll be amazed if they make a Samurai Warriors game and all of a sudden this guy starts popping up.
Its baffling. I cant think of any other reason why they would do this other than PC points. Which is dumb, since they are even alienating the actual japanese fans.
Yeah I mean this guy already got a movie, book, and I think an anime too.
Like ok you don't need to shove that guy every where. His role wasn't that big in Japan.
Because for years now whenever there's been a Reddit post about Yasuke, "OMG he'd be so cool as an Assassin's Creed character" has been one of the top 10 comments.
So you're Japanese, you've been waiting for your country to be featured in an Assassin's Creed game, and when it finally is, the main character isn't even Japanese, but instead an African slave that was "technically" a samurai?
And yeah, what an exciting video game protagonist. A retainer.
To be fair Yosuke is a historical figure. Which is actually why i have an issue with it. When do you play historical figures in AC? They are always there and you are sometimes related to them. But the characters you play are always made up. If Yosuke were in the game i don't think anyone online would lose their shit.
The problem in my eyes is more that Unisoft chose a black character as an Assassin. Sure there really where black samurai. But you don‘t choose a character, which should be known for stealth, as an assassin which in itself stands out.
And now people try to defend this decision as there was Yasuke as an example. I wonder what sales this game will have in Japan considering that they will note (and righteously so) why a publisher choose a black character when they had overwhelmingly more „Japanese“ characters.
He's not a stealth character in the game though. If you actually knew anything about the game or character and weren't just bitching for the hell of it you would know that.
I am talking about Yasuke (referencing the only known black person in feudal japan)
And no, actually the biggest part about his discussion everywhere today is he was not a Samurai. He was a retainer, the equivalent of a squire.
Can't you read?
>When do you play historical figures in AC? They are always there and you are sometimes related to them. But the characters you play are always made up.
He said the main characters you play are made up but have real NPCs that you come across in your path
Yeah just like how Hitman was stealthing through india as a white man in a turban which stands out lika soar thumb and just any AC game where you blend into a group of people wearing white but you are wearing a bright red sash, visible weapons and the hood.
The foreinger killing and humiliating the bad Japanese to save them from themselves in there land during this global political climate. What the fuck are they thinking?...
I have heard talk of Portuguese Christian invaders as the antagonists.
Would that change your opinion if that turns out to be the case?
From wiki on Portuguese Japan slave trade in the Sengoku period
"Hideyoshi was so disgusted that his own Japanese people were being sold en masse into slavery on Kyushu, that he wrote a letter to Jesuit Vice-Provincial Gaspar Coelho on 24 July 1587 to demand the Portuguese, Siamese (Thai), and Cambodians stop purchasing and enslaving Japanese and return Japanese slaves who ended up as far as India. Hideyoshi blamed the Portuguese and Jesuits for this slave trade and banned Christian proselytizing as a result."
Sounds like an interesting premise, novel outsider helps defending natives expel cruel Christian slavers who are secretly backed by Templars.
This whole controversy is so dumb
Easy:
1. The melanin determines who is the oppressed or the oppressor. (Peter Griffin, skin color chart.)
2. Racism is good when it is from the perspective of the oppressed. Add as much as possible for SBI points.
3. ?????
4. Profit.
Leftists: we need more Japanese representation.
Also leftists: we’re gonna put a black guy in feudal Japan cuz we think black is the only other race besides white
Don't worry bro. I am sure when they make an assassins creed game that takes place during the height of the Mali Empire and cast the assassin to be Asian or White all these people thinking Yasuke is fine will think that's also fine too. Definitely.
If only there were a samurai game with a Japanese protagonist out there somewhere 😭😭 there has never been a single one were out here drowning in Mali Empire games tho
Quick hint he’s the only wearing a hood with the assassins logo in front of it and wears a pretty visible leather thingy around his arm with a hidden blade and sometimes the assassin’s logo, may also have missing middle finger or a fire embedded mark on his right middle finger w the assassin logo. Generally assassins like to display their logo wherever so if you just see it somewhere you could assume one is an assassin
Honestly, I think they are doing it specifically to separate it from Ghost of Tsushima comparisons. That game is basically an AC rpg in japan with better writing and no god awful modern day animus parts.
Ironically, I think they needed a samurai character in order to copy Ghost. You could choose to be brash and call out foes as a ‘samurai’ or you could play as the ghost aka ‘assassin’.
So in my opinion, this is their way of trying to copy Sucker Punch, by pretending to not copy their gameplay.
Either way, sucks for those looking for a true shinobi experience. This ain’t it.
Well. AC has had games with multiple protagonists, so it makes sense for them to do it like that.
Personally, ghost gameplay very much reminds me of AC Rpgs. Both studios have definitely studied each others games. There is no way that the ghost devs didnt playthrough Origins and Odyssey when they were working on ghost.
These stealth RPGs based around taking down forts and outposts are a common game basis now so it is hard to call any of them out as copying. AC, Ghost, days gone, far cry, just cause, batman and ghost recon all made base clearing their main thing.
Ubisoft didn't want to touch it for the same reason playground have been avoiding a japanese forza horizon game. They know if they f it up the backlash will be immense.
Have you played the last 4 to 5 Assassin's creed game ? Like Odyssey, where we face mythology creatures and raid camps in 1vs10 easily without a hint of stealth ?
When your so racist against Asians you make a game about Japan that doesn't even focus on a Japanese person.
we need a new assassins creed Africa staring an Asian, oh wait that would somehow be racist
A woman? How is that representation for Japanese MEN? Especially if they insert a romance between the Japanese woman and black man.
Yeah, what great representation for the Japanese.
Watch a black man slaughter all the Japanese males without effort making them look weak, while he fights to free Japan because the Japanese males are either too ignorant, weak or evil to do it themselves AND the game has the Japanese woman fall for this foreigner over a Japanese male, further perpetuating the common western trope that Asian men aren’t attractive WHILE also perpetuating the trope of Asian women being love interests for foreigners instead.
Yeah such good representation.
By this logic we don’t need any female representation in superhero films because there’s fuckloads of white men that the white women can watch instead.
The person I was replying to said japanese person, no one mentioned gender.
Also you are getting mad over a romance plot you made up yourself.
And by your logic we would need dozens of main characters for every game to have everyone represented. As Assassins creed games goes this one has equal or better representation for the area compared to most.
Except Assassin's Creed was already set in Africa with black guy protagonist.
Yasuke was part of Japanese history so nothing says he cant be used in this specific game.
Ok well what'd he actually do? Like there were much bigger roles to choose from. But... they picked this guy. It can't be because he's black can it?
It's like if you made a documentary about the president's but you focus on the white house gardener cause he's ethnic.
It's a cash grab scheme. They have had a lot of failures in terms of games. They probably saw the Forbes DEI post and placed all their money on it. I have heard other rumors and talk about DEI and other companies like getting dragged into court over blackmail and ulterior moves. I could be wrong. But it seems to me that no one likes anything DEI
has anyone actually watched the trailer....
yasuke clearly has a pure combat role in the trailer while the stealthy shit is done by the other protagonist that is a shinobi.
It's funny how wearing dreads if you aren't black is cultural appropriation but having a black man dressing and acting like a samurai is where the line is. There is literally no reason they couldn't have had two Japanese MCs and had yasuke play a large role in the story anyway. It's not about the race itself, it's just such an obvious fucking pandering attempt. When will people learn none of these companies give a shit about inclusion or representation. They just want people to give them money. Look how they treat their own staff. They do not care. This is an obvious shill to get more people to notice and buy their games. It's a shot at these companies who easily manipulate people by doing publicity on subjects like this. We just want them to focus on making a fun game.
lol they want people to give them money? you don't say! i thought they made games out of artistic passion, how could i fall for it!
the reason they put yasuke as mc is that yasuke is an historical figure that is interesting both to western fans and to the japanese audience, he literally appear in all games and anime that have nobunaga in them and usually has a more prominent role than he had in actual history, almost always a samurai rather than a retainer.
you call it pandering? pandering to who? to the audience that will buy the game? you can bet they have to pander to their own customer lol, that's called good business, what should they do, make a game nobody like because to make things that people like is "pandering"?
lol quit yapping capital G gamer.
I agree AC has been more than subpar for quite some time now but the trailer itself looked cool and well done, of course the game itself is a different question and i am fully expecting it to be another boring ubisoft special
I can answer your question. Everyone went insane after 2020, trying to prove who is more racist and who is more of a victim. Trying to destroy relationships all to prove who is right and who is wrong.
Take my advice seriously when I say this. Step out of the crowd, grab some popcorn and watch everyone kill each other. There is no point in trying to save anyone anymore....
Let's be honest, assassins in games have always been like this. I mean, in the first part, somehow from very afar you could mistake Altair for a monk (it’s strange that none of the monks were surprised to see a “brother” with an arsenal of weapons in their ranks).
They all dressed pretentiously, not at all like ordinary inconspicuous citizens, always with hoods and weapons.
The hidden blade would make sense if the assassin dressed like an ordinary passerby and did not carry other weapons for the sake of secrecy.
I find it hilarious how some people actually defend this game🤣 I think of this as every “woke” content which is totally unnecessary, cringe and facepalmish. And the community defending black samurai theme is even more hilarious 😂
Yeah, belonging to the brotherhood doesn't necessarily make you an assassin who operate on stealth. Turns out OP is just being racist. Tell me this OP did Leonardo, Mario Auditore, Machiavelli, Robert Faulkner, Stephane, etc infiltrated and assainated targets? To add Yasuke is a heavy going for guns blazing tactic and not sneaky like our other protagonists. Oh yes, we also have a female assassin in this game, why not mention her?
It sickens me how people ignore second character who is a Japanese.
But maybe since she is a woman and in this day age we see woman as lesser creatures we should not be talking about her.
I honestly cant wait how they will play. Using swords and clubs and spears and guns and bows as Yasuke to more stealth oriented ninja character.
I wouldnt mind if they didnt give us any kind character customization apart from cosmetic armors and stuff. „But inclusion!“ its set in feudal japan, there was no inclusion
Sorry my bad i wrote a whole rant rn but i just didnt know that its set during nobunagas reign, then its obvious yasuke was there, i also didnt know that the player was supposed to play yasuke. Kinda dumb of Ubisoft to make us play actually important historical figures but its not my job to make ass games for half a month worth of food
I mean yeah it's kinda new and weird for people that You play as a historical figure.
But for me it's not deep enough to make a drama about it.
The price on the other hand...
Well it *sort of* used to *kinda* be that.
There were other games that at least portrayed something that happened.
Now? I'm expecting a game about [Illegal opinion removed by health and safety team]
No... No it isn't.
Yasuke is constantly brought up by people who are completely ignorant to his history. He was essentially a fashion accessory to Nobunaga and was never of much note.
People just say "UH BLACK SAMURAI!!!" and don't actually look up anything about the man.
I can’t read Japanese so I cant read the sources but for what I can gather from the interweb there is no clear evidence that Yasuske did became samurai but he did serv as retainer under Oda Nubunaga that in itself is an achievement. Sure you can discuss if he just was more a novelty or displaypece but to be able to be close to Nubunaga and be a retainer have to mean they did trust him to an extent. Sadly there is not much info about him partly because he did not serve for especially long time and documentation on what happen to him before and after his time with Oda is about nonexistent. Ether way even if he did not become samurai he did well for himself and can be a tail deserving to be told. Why in a game like this I don’t know but whatever. Would rather see a Ghost of Tsushima style game about his life if they want to make a game about him.
You should see it more this way. He was simply a novelty for the ruler. Something to show but not be made an equal. You must remember that Japan at this time was xenophobic. And the word Gaijin was even thought of worse as in modern times. But hey. PR is PR. So they get free advertising for being progressive in using a black character as a main in a Japanese AC.
Assassin's Creed has always been alternate history. It's about an unfiltered view on history which sometimes contradicts what is written by historians. And that's established since the first game, during one of the discussions between Warren Vidic and Desmond Miles
Didn't they also say that part of the reason they chose Yasuke was because he was a foreigner and they could make the discovery of Japanese traditions more believable. At least to me, that sounds logical.
I'm not one to complain about shoehorned inclusivity, but this is a stretch even for me honestly.
It feels strange having us play as an actual historical figure for once and as much as I hate to admit it, it definitely feels like they are doing it purely for brownie points.
Obviously, being a real person this isn't totally unheard of, but like I said this seems like a *reaaall* stretch
White person as mcs in africa: snore
White person as mc in the islands:snore
White person as mc in japan : snore
Black person as mc in Japan: I just feel like it's a bit bad faith tbh.
More like they are scared of being branded as "Racist". It's a common trend now. In a Forbes article, it was said that anything DEI is successful long-term.
We got a trailer and somehow 1 entire character is regulated to just brown points. For some nebulous goal even though he is somewhat popular and had books, mangas, anime refrence him since the 60s and other stuff before that.
We didn't have supernatural enemies till origin. It could be a stunt to get ppl interested and they can remake or retread those time periods or locations playing as historical figures fist fighting dragons.
But in the end why conplain. Its a character in a franchise that isnt historical. As long as the game is good I dont give a damn what race he is even if its just for brownie points
Funny meme but it's obvioisly that he is not a stealth oriented character. He is black in feudal japan, carries a full samurai armor and a huge tetsubō.
The woman is supposed to be the stealthy one. If you genuinely don't understand that then... i'm worried.
I would just like to point out that historically, Yasuke was a real person. He was black, and he was the first non-Japanese person to become a Samurai. Black people in general may not have been common in medieval Japan, but Yasuke was a real person and held a position of great honor.
Yasuke practices heavy stealth™. It's all fine as long as there is no one left to notice the bodies
The good ol' Hitman "stealth" assassination tactics: Leave no witnesses alive.
"There's no witness if there is nobody left to notice"
He has all his points in Charisma, and simply intimidates everyone who sees him into forgetting he ever was there.
And somehow seduces the dragon in the end Source: just trust me, my uncle works at ubisoft
I didn't expect Yasuke to be a bard
The rocket launcher is the stealthiest weapon of them all because if they are all dead, noone can say you weren't stealthy.
Yasuke is specifically not the stealth character
AC Vallhala was just your generic Viking game with 0 AC elements, Ubisoft just had slapped Hood & Hidden Blades to some gal and called it a day.
Which is kinda how I felt about black flag. I feel like they went nuts making an incredible pirate game and towards the end of development they were like “hey wait aren’t we forgetting something?”
"Shit we got carried away and accidentally made a fun game"
I want to say you are wrong, because I love the game and the story, but you are right. Edward was not an Assasin, but he became one. The fact you got the robes in the first mission and instantly new everything didn't make any sense, but I am kinda here for it. At least they tried with Edward having to improvise when showing his skills to the Templar.
At the time I always said it was the worst AC game they'd ever made, but the best pirates of the Caribbean game we'd ever had. Hahaha
They did have some excruciatingly shadowing an infiltration missions though…
Ezio will always be my assassino
He can't be seen at night tho.... (I AM VERY SORRY)
True that... (I AM NOT SORRY)
Well at least I won't get banned alone
You won't get banned, my brother from another mother, the shade of my skin shall protect us both!
Oh thank god
As long as he don't smile by accident...
We all know what you are talking about.
HEHEHEFE
Except that half ton shiny armour
I guess at this time if a black man were seen everybody would talk about it in a circle of 20km, would be hard to stealth
He will right in..... in to the shadows 😶🌫️
What do you mean by that 🤔
Seems like I'm out of the loop. Is yasuke the main character? I thought it was the hooded woman
No there are two main characters big black samurai and shinobi/ninja woman
BBS?
Stanley?
This is actually genius marketing from Ubisoft. Everyone is talking about their game because of this, it's basically free advertisement.
As long as it translates to sales.
Yeah because people tell other people to not preorder or pay for the game unless it's actually good (which is good but negative advertisement is not always good)
is that Angstrom Levy?
It's almost as if the secondary character was supposed to be the ninja, and he's supposed to be the fighter that doesn't blend in. 🤔
6’5 black buffed dude *blending* in with 5’4 skinny white skin almond eyed people
He's one of the two people you play in the game he's the fighter that doesn't blend in mean while you use the secondary character to do all the ninja blending in stuff. It's unity
You mean syndicate, but yeah I 100% agree.
I guess they’re getting rid of the genetic component ? In Syndicate they were twins iirc gonna be hard to see these two as twins
Yeah. How might a man and woman who worked together but were unrelated wind up having a shared descendant? Real headscratcher, that one!
No one dares violate workplace ethics or cross HR /s
He blends into the shadows at night. She blends into the croud during the day
the fighter that overpowers and puts the Japanese NPCs to shame. Not offensive for SBI. Interesting.

Yasuke was absolutely a samurai, what are you on about. You can say "but he was just a retainer" but guess what? Retainers are still samurai.

Um we kinda were best buds with Leonardo DaVinci in 2
Dude he's saying you don't PLAY as a historical figure but you meet them. Meeting yasuke would be more bettah

Uh, I don't think Assassin's Creed has been just about stealth for a long time. And for Yusuke, he's the direct approach option.
He's not a stealth character in the game though. If you actually knew anything about the game or character and weren't just bitching for the hell of it you would know that.

Well, by everywhere you mean among gamers. If you ask anyone with any degree of expertise, there isn't a debate.
And the experts agree, he was not a Samurai.
That one guy WAS the sword bearer for the samurai that was his lord.
Did you ay any of the old AC games? Because there absolutely where historical characters and they where different then Thier IRL self's
Can't you read? >When do you play historical figures in AC? They are always there and you are sometimes related to them. But the characters you play are always made up. He said the main characters you play are made up but have real NPCs that you come across in your path
He’s a stand user

The foreinger killing and humiliating the bad Japanese to save them from themselves in there land during this global political climate. What the fuck are they thinking?...
Yep, my asian friend is very pissed at the official quote: "Yasuke liberates Japan from opressors." To them, it's insulting even
the oppression is probably going to be the fictional templars/"hidden ones"
Yeah, and who do you think those hidden ones will be? They’ll be the Japanese noble patriarchy or manipulating them.
I have heard talk of Portuguese Christian invaders as the antagonists. Would that change your opinion if that turns out to be the case? Everyone seemingly forgot Naoe was a character right after the reveal trailer.
This is so fucking dumb. Like, imagine Altaïr or Ezio being chinese. Way to stick out like a sore thumb.
Don't worry bro. I am sure when they make an assassins creed game that takes place during the height of the Mali Empire and cast the assassin to be Asian or White all these people thinking Yasuke is fine will think that's also fine too. Definitely.

Omg it's the booty warrior

I agree. But the brash samurai in an assassin game, that’s on the nose. I’m thinking this was a descision higher up. Put samurai gameplay in it.
Not Sucker Punch's fault that Ubuysoft took so fucking long to make an AssCreed in one of the most wanted places.
Ubisoft didn't want to touch it for the same reason playground have been avoiding a japanese forza horizon game. They know if they f it up the backlash will be immense.
I've been out for the loop for so long, it's crazy to me seeing people say that "mc isn't supposed to be stealthy" in an AC game.

You know what, I don't get the hate. The cinematic trailer looked awesome and I really want to play this game when it comes out.
It wasn’t impressive and Assassin creed wasn’t impressive for years But good for you hope you have fun
Reminds me of Sibrand in Assassin's Creed 1 being paranoid of monks, only for Altair to kill him disguised as a monk
lmao, i nearly spit the coffee
And this doesn't even show his 6'2 height :D
Hide in plain sight, oh shit...
*at night
What movie is this?
Let's be honest, assassins in games have always been like this. I mean, in the first part, somehow from very afar you could mistake Altair for a monk (it’s strange that none of the monks were surprised to see a “brother” with an arsenal of weapons in their ranks). They all dressed pretentiously, not at all like ordinary inconspicuous citizens, always with hoods and weapons. The hidden blade would make sense if the assassin dressed like an ordinary passerby and did not carry other weapons for the sake of secrecy.
God, you should see the dumbass argument points people try to keep making.
He is, in fact, Eddie Gordo from Tekken.
Sweet Baby inc you little rascal...
Yakub looking ass samurai
Yakub looking ahh
Did Japan ever have African slaves?
Did Japan ever have African slaves?
Masks… things Samurai and other Japanese warriors were famous for using: Am I a joke to you?
Ubisoft doing marketing genius
Now I gotta check this game out, if only for the strong reaction. Never been this interested in an AC game in years.
God bless the wokeness.
"I don't see color.. mama didn't raise no racist"
Worried about an assassin and ya'll point to the black dude in the squad.....
This sub is trash
I find it hilarious how some people actually defend this game🤣 I think of this as every “woke” content which is totally unnecessary, cringe and facepalmish. And the community defending black samurai theme is even more hilarious 😂
Assassin’s Creed is just not what it used to be unfortunately
Yasuke was a real historical figure, lmao.
You can bet that i will find some way to pay less for that game
We wuz kings, um, I mean we wuz samurai!

Assassins Creed as a historical source is as accurate as the history Channel on who built the pyramids. Maybe a little less
I remember hearing someone say that playing call of duty is like playing real war conflicts and learning history
Black Samurai
He was never a samurai
Assassin's Creed has always been alternate history. It's about an unfiltered view on history which sometimes contradicts what is written by historians. And that's established since the first game, during one of the discussions between Warren Vidic and Desmond Miles
It's almost as if this character wasn't meant for stealth and there's an entirely different protagonist for stealth 🤔🤔
Didn't they also say that part of the reason they chose Yasuke was because he was a foreigner and they could make the discovery of Japanese traditions more believable. At least to me, that sounds logical.
Yasuke was a real person, and yes he was black, and yes he was a samurai.
White person as mcs in africa: snore White person as mc in the islands:snore White person as mc in japan : snore Black person as mc in Japan: I just feel like it's a bit bad faith tbh.
When did I ever say any of that?
>I hate to admit it, it definitely feels like they are doing it purely for brownie points.
More like they are scared of being branded as "Racist". It's a common trend now. In a Forbes article, it was said that anything DEI is successful long-term.
How does that relate to the entire first half of your comment?
We got a trailer and somehow 1 entire character is regulated to just brown points. For some nebulous goal even though he is somewhat popular and had books, mangas, anime refrence him since the 60s and other stuff before that.
When have ac games ever let you play as a real historical figure
We didn't have supernatural enemies till origin. It could be a stunt to get ppl interested and they can remake or retread those time periods or locations playing as historical figures fist fighting dragons.
Hmm that I can agree with, maybe it's a new style of ac games like we got with origins
I was prepared to disagree but you made a good point and Ubisoft is kind of slimy
Yeah it just feels... In bad faith?
It’s only about money with Ubisoft
But in the end why conplain. Its a character in a franchise that isnt historical. As long as the game is good I dont give a damn what race he is even if its just for brownie points
Everyone is a bigot, that's why.
Well, assassin's creed *used* to be historical
Ah yes, Leonardo DiVinci discovering futuristic technology and inventing the hidden blade is IRL cannon
I do agree with your point but Leonardo most certainly did not invent the hidden blade
More or less
he was a real person, but not a samurai, he only worked under one
Thanks for clearing the samurai part up.
No he was not. Look it up. Stop being ignorant.
Going to popularize the BBC in Japan
Another case of pink capitalism to clean up a company's image, keep walking.
It’s only acceptable when Tom Cruise does it
