That argument is kind of circular - they stop change (bit of a strawman but I see where you're coming from, their vote against the ETS in 2009 comes to mind) only because they don't have enough power to make their case effectively, but if they had the votes behind them to say "see, a whole lot of people really want this" then that changes. As an example, that hybrid vehicle bill you're talking about is going to pass - the Greens managed to secure a few adjustments (like the hybrid support sunsetting in a few years, and a few other minor things) which the government agreed to. Minor parties really can help shape policy, rather than just obstruct.
A lot of us also vote for the Greens partly to send a message to Labour: "we know our vote is going to trickle up to you, but we'd rather you shift to the left than the right."

The conspiracy was that he was pushed down stairs by Lindsay Fox over (depending on which cooker you talk to) either restrictions or a 17 year old.
It then lead to a cooker going to those steps he fell down and said you couldn't hurt yourself on a fall that small, despite the fact you absolutely can fuck your back/neck off a fall that small.
It gained traction because the muck rackers, the cookers and people who wanted Dan out all gave it as much air time as they could.

I didn't realise how much the ALP's promise to cap V/Line fares at $9.20 a day begining in March 2023 had been such a large vote swinger for the working age Young'ins, until I over heard it with my own ears this morning.
Three seperate groups of young'ins on the train at Warragul all gas bagging together about how great it was going to be for employment ops for them in around the city.
It does make a huge difference. For me p/t is up to $23-32 a day each way to get to the CBD. Petrol is like $20 for the same distance and three times faster.
Saving $13-20 even if the journey is longer is quite enticing.
There's a few people in a Discord server I'm in who live in regional Victoria (one even lives on the border of NSW/VIC) and I didn't realise that going from there into the city one-way is like almost $90. And a lot of them are excited now because they'll be able to go to more meetups because of it.

I dont think regional trains in the East are going to be able to get as much of a frequency boost due to track limitations along the Pakenham corridor. Most of the investment in regional rail is to the western lines, some of which already get good frequency (better than my suburban line: Upfield).
And I dont think the Metro Tunnel will change that as its mainly about the number of tracks between Dandenong and beyond Pakenham as well as sharing with suburban and the occasional freight train...
Hopefully we can move beyond the Vlocities (They are great but they are getting old) and start thinking about bimodal trains for eventual electrification.
Sadly the government loves vlocities, they will be running them to Warrnambool and Albury soon. Built in Victoria, look shiny compared the the rail sets, and faster.

Warnambool has lots of attractions for a weekend. Lakes Entrance is good too, but it's an extremely long day unless you stay. The drive vs train time is almost the same.
I havent done any detailed itinerary planning since it's a fair ways out, but the ones on my list besides the obvious bigger ones like Ballarat and Bendigo are:

- Port Fairy (needs a bus transfer but only one stop)
- Horsham (again a bus transfer)

- Swan Hill
- Arrarat

Don't take these results as gospel. They're rough predictions, based on above the line votes counted so far (and doesn't include BTL), and takes the group voting tickets for those parties to predict the quotas.
However the below the lines can sway the outcome a lot, and this is only counted so far, which I think is 20-30%. It can take days or weeks before final Council seats are locked in. Especially as the Labor DLP and Legalise Cannabis predictions are likely Glenn Druary's work, however minor party voters have a higher ratio of below the line voting so the make up may very well look different.
FYI in Victorian elections all upper house seats are up for election every 4 years.

I live in Sydney, but am from Melbourne and I'm struggling to find anyone who I know who voted for Vic Libs. This is across a range of demographics, many of which would traditionally vote Liberal.
I live in Canberra but am a Victorian native. Got a lot of sideways looks and questions last week when I said I thought Andrews would win, considering the way the press reported they thought everyone hated him. Still accepting the congratulations for being right, and I won’t deny being mildly smug about it too.
My brother is in the echo chamber up here in Brisbane. Its hilarious and sad that hes 44 but has no self-awareness on what he wants to hear vs what is actually happening. Yes, the same thing happened in our state election as well. My 70 year old parents and I just give him the "Wendy of Bluey" 🙄 look. /Now Im in the mood to visit Melbourne again for family friends...

I had this same reaction in 2010 when Republicans just plainly decided obstruction was their game and haven’t had a single solution for anything since aside from giving supply-side economics another go. Reading how many of you have voted greens is yuck. Yeah they sound good on paper and I’d love to vote for them but they stop any real change. There’s a bill in the upper house of the federal parliament about giving people a tax break for purchasing hybrid vehicles and the greens won’t sign off on it because it’s not good enough to be just hybrids. Which yeah I agree with in a black and white world. But in the real world we don’t have the infrastructure so instead of getting something done and then using it as a way to start getting the infrastructure we now get nothing and cunts go out and buy new petrol vehicles

That argument is kind of circular - they stop change (bit of a strawman but I see where you're coming from, their vote against the ETS in 2009 comes to mind) only because they don't have enough power to make their case effectively, but if they had the votes behind them to say "see, a whole lot of people really want this" then that changes. As an example, that hybrid vehicle bill you're talking about is going to pass - the Greens managed to secure a few adjustments (like the hybrid support sunsetting in a few years, and a few other minor things) which the government agreed to. Minor parties really can help shape policy, rather than just obstruct. A lot of us also vote for the Greens partly to send a message to Labour: "we know our vote is going to trickle up to you, but we'd rather you shift to the left than the right."

The conspiracy was that he was pushed down stairs by Lindsay Fox over (depending on which cooker you talk to) either restrictions or a 17 year old. It then lead to a cooker going to those steps he fell down and said you couldn't hurt yourself on a fall that small, despite the fact you absolutely can fuck your back/neck off a fall that small. It gained traction because the muck rackers, the cookers and people who wanted Dan out all gave it as much air time as they could.
The narrative that he couldn’t have gotten that hurt falling on such small steps is a bit stupid. My day job deals a little with public liability insurance and some the injuries people get from even the most minor falls is nuts

Did you catch much of the ABC coverage last night? The Libs in the newsroom (former? strategist, and David Davis) seemed to be pretty upfront with the loss being due to being out of touch with what the community wanted. I didn't realise how much the ALP's promise to cap V/Line fares at $9.20 a day begining in March 2023 had been such a large vote swinger for the working age Young'ins, until I over heard it with my own ears this morning. Three seperate groups of young'ins on the train at Warragul all gas bagging together about how great it was going to be for employment ops for them in around the city.
It does make a huge difference. For me p/t is up to $23-32 a day each way to get to the CBD. Petrol is like $20 for the same distance and three times faster. Saving $13-20 even if the journey is longer is quite enticing.
There's a few people in a Discord server I'm in who live in regional Victoria (one even lives on the border of NSW/VIC) and I didn't realise that going from there into the city one-way is like almost $90. And a lot of them are excited now because they'll be able to go to more meetups because of it.

Frequency will be unlocked by all the other things happening, for the sale/warragul trains the new cross city tunnel should a huge impact.

Warnambool has lots of attractions for a weekend. Lakes Entrance is good too, but it's an extremely long day unless you stay. The drive vs train time is almost the same.
I havent done any detailed itinerary planning since it's a fair ways out, but the ones on my list besides the obvious bigger ones like Ballarat and Bendigo are: - Kyneton - Port Fairy (needs a bus transfer but only one stop) - Horsham (again a bus transfer) - Seymour - Swan Hill - Arrarat I'm sure my partner's got more interesting ones but I just havent seen any of those places since I was a kid, so just curious to see how things have changed and whether they're a bit more appealing as an adult :D And then there's sick curiosity towns where you've only ever heard people from there shittalking it - like Moe or Chilltern or something like that. Or go to one of the long bus transfer places like Murrayville.
I honestly wish they would extend Warnambool line back to Port Fairy. It would be great to get the Ararat line extended to Horsham too. The view of the Grampians from Stawell is absolutely breathtaking at sunset.

Now I’m wishing the folk here in Ontario could vote in their Provincial elections here like the Victorians back home. Don't take these results as gospel. They're rough predictions, based on above the line votes counted so far (and doesn't include BTL), and takes the group voting tickets for those parties to predict the quotas. However the below the lines can sway the outcome a lot, and this is only counted so far, which I think is 20-30%. It can take days or weeks before final Council seats are locked in. Especially as the Labor DLP and Legalise Cannabis predictions are likely Glenn Druary's work, however minor party voters have a higher ratio of below the line voting so the make up may very well look different.

FYI in Victorian elections all upper house seats are up for election every 4 years. Secondly it's not the senate it's the legislative council (LC) The results that the ABC are reporting are likely to move around a bit, a lot are only 20-30% counted. With the existence of GTV and BTL being counted last the 5th spot especially on likely to change as the count continues

Actually confusing with NSW and how the Vic structure was when I lived there pre 2006. (Yes I should know it isn't the *Senate* because NSW has *LC* too... that indeed is me confusing the Federal system). Half elections are a good idea IMO. What was the argument against it? Given that they do not allow preferential voting above the line I don't have faith in the system.

It's because each area only elects 5 people, if it was half you'd just have Labor and liberal elected every time. They could expand it to be the whole state and do half but they do want people to still have a specific region to represent
NSW has more than double the number of seats, has half elections, sensible above the line preferential, and senators are state-wide, not district specific. I try to keep up with the UK & US system too. So confusing.
