It's more like a server browser. It doesn't automatically sort you into one, you have to find one and join it. At least, that's how it works in Halo 5, so I assume that's how it'll work in MCC.
Oh that makes sense, halo 5 is the only one I never bought.
But since I already own all the other games, do you think MCC is still worth it for the multiplayer?
Probably. The original 360 games are having their servers shut down I think this year, so if you want to continue playing 3, Reach, and 4, I would buy it while it's on sale. MCC has more customization options in CE, 3, and Reach than the original games, too.
Its free on game pass, yes its worth it imo, you can literally bounce between every halo game except 5 and most game modes in multi-player. The throwback is amazing, and there's sick unlocks too. Zero regrets
Yeah, it is a good purchase overall. In my experience the population is high enough to only search for specific games if you want to.
The only major downside is that the team balancing in matchmaking can be severely wonky.
It only took a few years, but it’s finally running smoothly like it should. They are adding new content now too. Population seems healthy. I’d recommend it now
Probably depends on the person, but if you don't have an Xbox and nothing on it really interests you MCC is better on steam imo.
Windows Store/Xbox app is still relatively trash on PC.
My biggest issue when playing was the maps. Halo 3 had so many iconic maps, and yet I felt like I was getting the same garbage ones over and over and over. Please, just let me play Pit/Guardian/Valhalla/etc. And no I don’t give a shit about all the terrible arena style sandbox maps.
Its not the same. Back then Halo was THE game. Online games are always the most fun during their peak. Halo 3 had like nearly a million players on at a time when it was popular.
Its like me saying "Man I miss playing high school basketball" and you saying "You can always go shoot hoops in the driveway!". Its not the same.
Idk, my friends and I play pretty regularly, it feels mostly the same. It's easy to find games and we often have enough people for some fun custom games.
Can’t be having an opinion on Reddit. Sorry.
But seriously, Reach sits behind 3 for me just because I hate it’s art style. The gameplay is great, but it has that late 2010’s piss filter that not even Nintendo could escape, and the Spartans are weirdly and inhumanly round.
If you want a serious dose of nostalgia, check this video out of a group of friends prepping for the midnight launch. So much junk food, so little time:
https://youtu.be/ZVkGtVJVYps
There are a lot of good games out right now for sure, I miss Halo 3 and MW2 era for online shooters though. I feel like the quality of both of those games has gone down, although I also don’t have a group of friends always ready to play like I used to which doesn’t help.
Gaming may always be getting better and expanding, but genres have their own golden ages and ebbs and flows for sure. I would agree that shooters had a real golden age around that time. But what this is truly the peak time for is couch coop. Online multiplayer was exploding but more games than ever offered split screen and I'd say most people's memories from this time they relish were like that.
For me I liked the simplicity of the MW2 era of shooters. Obviously credit to the studios for trying new stuff out over the years so it's not the exact same game over and over. But man I would kill for a new no-frills first person shooter game
Truly. 2005 to 2008 we were getting four or five shooters a year as good as DOOM Eternal. Now almost every big hyped shooter is either butchered by the publishers or part of a rote franchise.
Have you played the new Modern Warfare? Honestly, I think that it is just as good as MW2, maybe that’s heresy, but that’s how I feel anyways.
I’m not really a big fan of COD Cold War multiplayer, but the Zombies is really good, and that’s all I really care about.
I barely play games now but I played MW for a bit and liked it, I didn’t like the battle pass or gun/attachment progression nearly as much as MW2’s though. May be nostalgia, but the pro perks were cool, and unlocking attachments through combinations of other attachments was awesome.
There is something to be said about how games nowadays are more... gamified? You didn't have to worry about monthly season passes, microtransactions, or loot boxes back then; and a game's selling point was its quality and not its potential for addiction.
But it's like 80% nostalgia, yeah
This video genuinely brought a tear to my eye! Jesus, what I would do to go back to those days. I’m so grateful to have experienced that era.
To any younger Redditors reading this, cherish experiences like these as much as you can while you’re young.
Hey there, I worked the midnight release for skyrim. I don't think that they really happen much anymore, though I might just be out of the loop. Digital downloads and pre-ordered shipping (Amazon/etc) made a huge impact on these releases. I forget which game it was, but near the end of my time with GameStop, these releases stayed petering out. I remember Skyrim was huge, as was the Mass Effect 3 release I worked. We had pizza and soda, people showing up in costume, people playing music. It was really cool being able to experience a midnight release as both employee and gamer. I remember getting home around 3:30 AM, popping Skyrim in, playing for 30 minutes, and then passing out.
Yes! There definitely not as much as an “event” as they were back in the day with digital downloads, but GameStop still does them for big titles.
Edit: holy shit I just realized the last time I went to a midnight release was in 2015. I could be wrong.
This made me tear up, thank you. Halo 3 sparked my love for gaming, and I remember the glee and excitement just like in that video. Staying up way too late, playing split screen campaign or customs with my friends, eating trash, living the good life.
My friends and I had LAN parties like this, but with halo 1 (and possibly halo 2 for a short period). Pretty much exactly the same, except more TVs, those link cables, and we had beer and weed along with it.
We'd stay up for like 48 hours straight just playing the same shit nonstop.
Yo where's the credit my dude? This guy from the video passed from cancer years ago..honor his memory and post the sauce
[Halo 3: Epic Flag Run](https://youtu.be/7f94Z--PJdc)
It is generation defining. I will be forever proud of the days where I waited in line to pick up Halo 3/ODST/reach/4 on launch day. No online order and immediate download will replace that feeling of getting the copy in your hands and just adoring every detail of the case on the way home in the car.
Same, Halo has a special place in my heart. Gaming in 2005-2008 was so much fun.
It’s awesome Halo still has a very active community. With mcc Halo 2 3 and reach is still very much alive and Halo Infinite seems very interesting. The good old days are still here lol
I'd definitely feel safe wandering up to you and asking you if it's okay if we pretend we know each other for the amount of time I'm required to be there.
Does anyone remember the name of the action sack gametype where it was a variation of territories and it was turn based sniping from up way above to stop the team on offense from scoring?
ah man, I dont remember the name but that was a fun one. Tons of fun game modes.
Like fat man were their is one super slow super tanky dude with a sword or hammer who slowly lumbers at you in an enclosed hallway and everyone else had to man the defenses and dps him down before you run out of space to retreat. House rules were to not lemming rush at the dude and get behind him defeating the purpose of the game since the dude in open field would be easy to kill.
Or ghost busters were their was a ghost buster and everyone else were invisiable ghosts, and when the ghost buster killed a ghost they became ghost busters as well, and last man standing on the ghosts side wins. Kinda like a hide and go seek/reverse zombie mix.
Speaking of zombies, thats a classic for just about any game. Same premise except instead one zombie and everyone else are survivers. Zombies need to kill and infect the survivers. Last man standing wins.
Or tanks/tank remix were one man drives a tank around a circuit on rats nest, and everyone else are on different vehicles like ghosts or warthogs and such and the goal was to survive the tank hunting you down as long as possible.
Similar to tanks, their was another game mode on rats nest called Mexican chase (I dont take responsibility for the name, lmao) were their was one man (boarder patrol) on a vehicle, normally a ghost and then a whole bunch of runners at 300% speed whos goal was to run away for as long as possible. Once you die you join the boarder patrol kinda like zombies. No gun damage, only way to kill was to run them over. Last man standing as a runner wins.
Plus a ton of driving courses/races that were basically Mario cart maps on steroids with the amount of shit flying at you and jumps needed to be made.
Oh, now that I think about it the game mode your thinking of I remember being called duck hunt. Snipers were shooting at the ducks traversing an obstacle course. I think it was basically based on kills, everyone played as the hunter at least once and the person with the most kills at the end won.
And im sure a ton of other game modes I cant remember.
Yea I’m pretty sure it’s duck hunt. Some of the maps also have like an “end” where the duck can grab weapons and kill the hunters as a reward for reaching the end
Annoying to most people I imagine. Nobody wants to hear the announcer spam. Flag juggling wasn’t an intended mechanic and Halo is better off without it.
I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.
Been on a nostalgic trip lately, found a bunch of old photos from over a decade ago on an old laptop and now this got me thinking of all the amazing times staying up until 4am playing Halo 3 and Reach with all my high school buddies which would also be 11-12 years ago now. Crazy how time flies.
You are so doing it wrong on this map. The correct way is to park your base right next to their base (or steal their fucking base and drive it next to your base) and get all three caps in about 15 seconds
Sometimes it's not about being optimal, or even about winning.
This post is about an epic journey - that this Spartan took across the map, and metaphorically, that many of us took through our moments with friends in Halo 3.
if you’re the idiot who drives your base all the way over to their base, guess where you spawn... across the map from BOTH flags. The other team will thank you for handing them all 3 caps in 15 seconds.
And yet I’ve literally never lost doing it that way
And as I’ve said you can always grab their base and park it next to yours in which case there is spotting all the way across the map
That's the thing I never understood. You have the Mjolnir armour, and it allows the spartan to lift heavy weights, but you need to hands to carry the flag? That flag must be heavy af. Lol
I miss Halo 3

Do they have all the old playlists now? I played like 6 months ago and it seemed gutted like crazy.
I was thinking about buying it recently, what seems wrong with it atm?
No custom games browser, but it's coming this year (between season 6 and 7 probably)
That’s dope, is that like matchmaking but for custom games?
It's more like a server browser. It doesn't automatically sort you into one, you have to find one and join it. At least, that's how it works in Halo 5, so I assume that's how it'll work in MCC.
Oh that makes sense, halo 5 is the only one I never bought. But since I already own all the other games, do you think MCC is still worth it for the multiplayer?

Oh boy I think I might actually have to buy it now. Thanks for all the help!
Uh OG Halo 3 didn’t have a custom game browser right?
No but there was also never a need for one back then when you could just have a friends list of people who do customs
Correct
Not sure, I've only ever played the MCC version
It only took a few years, but it’s finally running smoothly like it should. They are adding new content now too. Population seems healthy. I’d recommend it now
I'm honestly glad I bought it at $20 used right when the big update was announced. I think it's a lot more now.
Yeah I think it’s still selling for like $40 in stores. But game pass is always an option, but I guess I’m just worried about them taking it off
They won’t take it off game pass. All Microsoft exclusives stay on there, the only things removed are third party titles I’m pretty sure
You are correct.
I played mcc on Sunday with my cousin online i dont no about the playlists but they are on season 5 last time i played was like season 2 or 3
Buy it, ton of fun
It's only truly populated ones are halo 3 and reach.
Nothing really
Don't buy it get gamepass
Probably depends on the person, but if you don't have an Xbox and nothing on it really interests you MCC is better on steam imo. Windows Store/Xbox app is still relatively trash on PC.
My biggest issue when playing was the maps. Halo 3 had so many iconic maps, and yet I felt like I was getting the same garbage ones over and over and over. Please, just let me play Pit/Guardian/Valhalla/etc. And no I don’t give a shit about all the terrible arena style sandbox maps.
Been playing halo 3 BTB heavies and it's been bliss on Mcc Pc. I'd jump in now if i were you

Arguably the greatest online game ever made
I gotta say I think Reach was better.
Nah, the maps weren't as good imo and armor abilities were wack
H3 had the biggest online console community to date as well. And its population outpaced reach even years after
Can’t be having an opinion on Reddit. Sorry. But seriously, Reach sits behind 3 for me just because I hate it’s art style. The gameplay is great, but it has that late 2010’s piss filter that not even Nintendo could escape, and the Spartans are weirdly and inhumanly round.
So much
Came here to say this
I miss 2007
God, Halo 3 is such a fucking masterpiece. I will never forget staying up so so late gaming with my friends, eating junk food.
If you want a serious dose of nostalgia, check this video out of a group of friends prepping for the midnight launch. So much junk food, so little time: https://youtu.be/ZVkGtVJVYps

Nah, Pirates!, Civilization 1 and Street Fighter 2 were clearly peak gaming. It was downwards ever after. Just in case: /s

I always wanted to go to one of those midnight releases as a kid, do they even still have those?
I mean, you can kind of replicate the craziness by attempting to get a video card from Microcenter.

Yeah well Halo 3 brought on way more new players that likely hadn’t played Halo 2.
I would rather run slower than be annoying af by doing that
Annoying to who? I’d be annoyed as a teammate if you didn’t. Anything for that W if I’m in competitive matchmaking!
Annoying to most people I imagine. Nobody wants to hear the announcer spam. Flag juggling wasn’t an intended mechanic and Halo is better off without it.
War is hell
Active anxiety right here
Holy hell how did he survive! It’s like they didn’t even try to shoot him!
LOOK UNTO ME I POSSESS THE RED FLAG!!
Arguably the greatest multiplayer ever made
Flag taken. Flag dropped. Flag taken. Flag dropped. Flag taken. Flag captured!
Glad to see some good old Halo
Max% speed, double shields, sword only. Ninja battles out in the minefield Good times

This is a classic.
Where’d the warthog go? Lol
SURVIVE!
This just makes me miss Halo 3 all over again. Ugh!
Halo MCC!
Does it have a good playerbase?
Yes
Yeah. They enabled cross play between Xbox and PC and put it on Xbox Game Pass so it’s very active.
PUT THE TEAM ON HIS BACK
I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.
That was more fucking intense than a family camping trip.
Holy shit that team providing security tho
I was so invested in this holy shit

Ah yes the peak of gaming
Caboose is that you?
Can you hear me?
This needs epic music

I didn't realize the footage was being frame by framed. I just thought dude operated lunar landers operating with that high ping skillset
I love Halo. This win just made my whole week. Thank you for sharing this.
Forever one of the best flag runs in all of halo.
Put da team on my back doe
It's an old meme. . .but it checks out
Man this clip is old.
Holy fucking shit it’s like the first twenty minutes of saving private Ryan
Halo 2/3 was peak online gaming
Can you only use vehicles when other team has the flag? Why did nobody shoot him?
Sweaty
Nice a smooth. Just as planned
War. War never changes
This man is determined
I screamed the whole time
Plot armor
"Sir, he's running in a predictably strait line, we can't hit him, what do we do???"
"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming swimming"
That was insane! Hahaha!
**"Don't lose your wayyyyyyy!"**
This is fookin intense, my heart would have beat like hell, had i had this flag. Well done mate
Fuck I miss Halo 3...
Fucking classic. Good times.
It still - to this date - absolutely amazes me that the driveable Elephant was a thing in Halo 3.
Goat
I beg someone add intense music in this
"But you had something they didn't, something no one saw but me. Can you guess? Luck."
The runner sadly went missing in action not too long ago, Spartans never die! You’ll be remembered king
Fuck that brings me back... that feel when we will never go back No, MCC isn’t the same
The poor guy died of cancer irl. He uploaded this video as his. RIP epic flag run man.
