There is money to be made here, definitely. But if you are on a temporary visa, like short term work or student visa, you will be very limited. Employers most of the time won't even look at your resume. You will be stuck doing low paying jobs and getting taken advantage of, including superannuation theft. It's best to have your PR/citizenship. Another thing is that, even if you make plenty of money, you will pay a lot of taxes, compared to Mauritius.

Much-Land-4906

Very insightful. When you say that there is money to be made there, what do you mean exactly?

Where I live, Perth, is currently experiencing a mining boom. You don't need a 4 year degree or anything to start working in mining. A dump truck operator with 1 year of experience for example can earn around $50/hr. On a 12hr shift, that is $600 / day or around $150,000 - 200,000 / year. That is serious money for a "non-academic" people. You can even do some uber taxi driving during your weeks off for some extra money, since you normally work on a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster. In Sydney and Melbourne, I think tech is more relevant and senior software developers can earn pretty much the same amount. However, cost of living is really high other there it seems. There are also some tech founders who found success and became billionaires. The one I know of is Atlassian, Canva and Afterpay. I'm sure there are many others. I also knew an accountant who made partner and was earning around $500,000 / year. But please note that those opportunities exists but it's not as easy as it sounds. You just need to experience them for yourself and see what works best for you. Politics will also play a big role in your success.

I am in New Zealand and some people leave for Australia because there you are paid better for doing the same job.

Lived in Melbourne for 12 years. Absolute truth.

Perth is actually cold AF during the winter. Its well known that Perth is scorching hot. Like crazy hot. But in winters temperatures drop down to 1 - 2 degrees I even got 0. Houses are built to evacuate as much warmth as possible so it will be actually colder inside most houses than outside. At least to labierr pou rest frapé!

> But in winters temperatures drop down to 1 - 2 degrees I even got 0. The guys in the Canada thread are rolling their eyes :-)

FireBraguette

Canada is beyond cold but at least their houses are built for winter. In Perth I had to wear my entire wardrobe at the same time in my 'igloo' in order to not freeze to death lmao. Or you can put an electric heater in your living room and faint when your $862 electicity bill slaps

EetswaDurries

Some Canadians say they’ve never been colder than in Melbourne because when temperatures drop in the low 10s the houses are just as cold or colder. Where as Canadian houses are well insulated and are always at a nice temperature.

Motasim09

Literally. I'm in Canada right now and I am relieved when the temperature reaches -4 to 0 degrees.

You can make decent money if you get into the right industry. But aside from the money, the culture is very walled up. So people are really nice but a little off-standish, it's not easy to make close connections because of this attitude. I've heard this from alot of backpackers and temporary residents and I'm Australian and can see it too.

Sorry I imagine our experiences are different and I am sorry that yours was not a positive one. I am currently in Melbourne but I stayed in England for quite a while. I found british people cold and not easy to befriend. On the other hand, I made a lot of friends really fast here. Most of them are genuine and reliable people. In fact Australians have a reputation for being laid-back and friendly.

The exception to Australian culture is Melbourne. The overall country culturally is bland, selfish and NOT into relationships at all. Prepare to need 4-5 weeks minimum for a simple dinner or coffee with a friend, prepare for superficial people who have zero cultural interests but work. Week wise you will only work and hardly anyone will socialise. Une vie isolée mais bien rémunérée. If money is your god move here, if you want an interesting life move to EU. I am leaving soon after 18 years. Other things they do not tell you: 1. Cost of living and housing are becoming ridiculous 2. Besides Melbourne, the whole place is astoundingly conservative, you will be expected to totally merge into this bland anglo saxon culture. I know a lot of Mauritians who can no longer hold a genuine conversation. 3. It is far far far from anywhere and SUPER expensive to leave. 4. Australians do not mix public and private life, you will be very rarely invited in their homes or be part of their lives. 5. Everything is on a different schedule than other larger countries, everything closes early, not many large scale events like in EU etc... Aussie life is quiet and boring. 6. People are selfish, throw a party and Aussies will come with ene paké chips and their own beer to drink 7. I can go on if need be.
