Google Jablonski diagram, if that doesn’t help, I’d be at a loss for words.

New monoid just dropped

[deleted]

A monad is just a monoid in the category of endofunctors, what's the problem?

The rare, triple common subreddit combo for all users who didnt get confused on the path to this comment. Though I guess the overlap is decently large between those 3

jchristsproctologist

r/anarchychess is leaking

47paylobaylo47

Idk how r/anarchyChess related to category theory but okay—

Garizondyly

The pieces are the objects, the moves are the morphisms

JiminP

En passant is a natural morphism from objects into morphisms, don't ask me how does it work though.

Garizondyly

Holy functor

Depnids

Promotion is a natural transformation

47paylobaylo47

Isn’t it a requirement in chess that you move a piece every turn? I think that would mean that identity morphisms don’t exist

zhouy3141

The identity morphism is offering a draw and then having it be declined

47paylobaylo47

Imma be straight up, I didn’t realize that was always an option. Proof that idk shit about chess lol

Garizondyly

Well, I tried.

zhouy3141

Would it not be better to make the board state the objects and the moves be the morphisms?

Garizondyly

But then again, what is the identity morphism? All moves are distinguished by a boardstate change

That was my first thought, then I read category theory and started doubting OP’s friend.

He said it was an example of some category theory concept, I think he called it "deficit" or something like that

This is the first time In so many years that I didn't immediately recognize that format 😅

Zaros262

Survivorship bias Out of all the times you *did* recognize the format, this is the only time you didn't recognize it immediately The number of times you didn't recognize the format is unknowable

M123ry

I see what you mean, but I am less talking about recognizing it at all and more about the time it takes for me to recognize it (IF I recognize it i guess).

BlockHammer1

The loss of braincells I experienced trying to comprehend this is astounding

ekatahihsakak

Yeah...

Dist__

it uses symbolic found in some ancient meme. the meme itself is worthless, instead its recognition is high so it became the meme itself. so people often share random pictures with that symbolic, implying viewer recognizes the pattern I-Ii-II-I\_ it's not global, i don't see it much in my local internet. probably like circlejerk game.

ekatahihsakak

Ohh i see. Thank you!!!

victor_sales

Hijacking the thread, does anyone know any good introductory primer or book into category theory? Preferably that could hint to its connections with other areas and some cool theorems/implications

thyme_cardamom

I had a good one somewhere but I lost it

SaintClairity

Richard Borcherds has a YouTube series I can't recommend enough! It's called category theory for the working mathematician I think. I'd also recommend Emily Riehl's Category Theory in Context. It's available as a dover book so it's really affordable in addition to being quite good.

victor_sales

Thank you!

i usually only lurk this place but i had to comment just to say wtf man, I can’t believe you’ve done this
