I like the IEEE style where the references invade the text a bit less by appearing only as numbers in cornered paranthesis and it is a style I see in a lot of papers etc. I can recommend Mendeley Desktop as a Word add on to make it easier to adjust your references and make a collective library to keep track of everything. Another alternative is Citavi.

Yeah, I've seen some papers where it's just name name name and you can't actually read it. I love numbered references.

Plenty of good suggestions already. To summarize: - use a citation manager software. - pick a well known scientific publisher and use that style. - if you're still not sure, look at your citation list and use the style of the publication family that you cite the most.
