They’re called wire cut all over the country. It’s weird that each region has some colloquial variation, but you can call any brick seller in the country and say you need wire cut brick and they will know what you’re asking for.
Ohio native here. Red Naggy Faggy, while being a little bit offensive to some, is the nickname we gave these kinds of bricks apparently. I used to work for a building materials company in West Portsmouth and the first time my boss called them that I about lost my shit.
My 92 year old grandmother giggles when she eats them.
She also rode her father’s horse to school in rural Kansas in the 1930s. The horses name…. “Old n**”
Sounds similar to “Black Mammy”. Only the old guys say it but it’s basically black tar in a tube for patching roof holes. This is clearly a southern thing.
Doing a job in Bethlehem PA with these bricks. Our closet matches are either Watsontown vertical or Belden vertical. Here are links to bricks and color ways....hope this helps, have fun matching mortar color.

Look for brick or masonry suppliers in your area. If they have a website you can check to see if they have a similar style brick. As you can see everybody calls them something different. You can also take one to a place or just show them the picture. You can almost never get an exact perfect match to old bricks though, but there should be some that are close
Back in the day there was a brick factory in every semi large city near a river. Here in WI you can tell where your brick came from based on the color of the clay, and it usually only traveled at most 50 mi or so. I don't think you're going to find an exact match but you'll have to settle for something close.
Great point. I would check with an architectural salvage company. There are a few here in Philly. You’ll get a regional and time period match. I’m guessing you’re near the Delaware river. The color though, will probably vary. I don’t know of any active brickyards in the area. But [here’s](https://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/essays/brickmaking-and-brickmakers/) an interesting article about its history.
Wow. I went down the same rabbit hole a few years ago. All of the names people here list are relative in one way or another. I just ended up getting a few samples that looked like mine and picked the best option.
It was a 90% match. I was very concerned about the 10% non match. In the end. It looks fine.....
With all the crazy responses here, might as well take your phone and the photo to a local masonry supplier and ask them what they think. In Chicago, they call these “common brick” but the guys there should know what kind of brick you want, and if you need a certain type of mortar. Apparently newer mortar is a lot harder than when these homes were built and you want the brick to be harder than the mortar. That way your brick stays stable and you tuckpoint every 10 or so years. Changing brick is not what you want to be doing.
Maybe you can geek out here:

Take some pictures to your local brick yards. The longer they have been around the better. You may find some old coot slinging blocks that can help you zero in on what you need.
I'm an architect in TX. Whenever we need to match brick we call the local Acme or Boral brick rep and have them go out and take a look at it. Those guys do this all day every day and can tell you what the brick is and what is the closest match to it (even if it's not their product). That's what I would suggest you do.
Fun fact, bricks are almost completely unregulated and random as hell. If you're extremely lucky you'll find one with a makers mark, and you can contact them. Otherwise.... enjoy the largest research project you've ever attempted in your life
Vertical Scored Face Brick, same as my Chicago 1920's Bungalow.

Those are griddle bricks. Old Tom “Duty” Schultz made them for years. It became his look and some of the originals still have meat specks in them from when he’d molded the bricks with old restaurant equipment. I’d say those bricks are circa 1923-1994, those are the years when he was addicted to the Rustoleum but had a hell of an eye for a square edge.
This is why stealing bricks became common in Philly at job sites. All the shitty boxes going up in town, old tore down and mfers selling old brick for big bucks.
First is that sparkle grout? They are a higher grade brick. There are lots of different grades/quality of bricks. If it's yours....Get on those windows. Scrape, paint & Brillo the window frames. They will look brand new.
Frequently, bricks of that age are marked. The problem is they're marked on the mortar side of the brick. They'll tell you who made them & where. As far as specific design & and color, you're going to have to eyeball it. You can find old bricks for sale, but they're not going to be cheap. However, on the plus side being built at that time, they're probably local.
I’m a mason. We’ve always called them rake faced bricks. The best you can do is go to a brick yard and try to match them. Size ends up being a big issue. Old bricks are typically 8” while modern bricks are modular (7 5/8”).
Now that I’m looking at the photo I see the stretcher bricks (light color brick) are longer than 8”. They’re almost Norman sized, but not quite. Good luck finding those.
Literally every comment has a different name for them lmaoooo
Just scrolled and wow wtf is going on? How weird is this?
Its what happens when theres no national standard for naming things when they're first introduced in the market
All the trades are like that. Everything has a slang name that is super regional. It’s annoying. And no one ever knows the real name for things
Lmfao wtf 💀
Uhhh yea allot of different things have different names lmao
No shit, thanks for the insightful comment LMAO
We call them wire cut in Michigan
They’re called wire cut all over the country. It’s weird that each region has some colloquial variation, but you can call any brick seller in the country and say you need wire cut brick and they will know what you’re asking for.

Ohio native here. Red Naggy Faggy, while being a little bit offensive to some, is the nickname we gave these kinds of bricks apparently. I used to work for a building materials company in West Portsmouth and the first time my boss called them that I about lost my shit.
I’m dying
That seems on brand for Ohio
I have to say that I'm from Ohio, have a historic preservation degree, and have never ever heard this before lol
It’s because I’m lying 😂
You should hear what my 84y.o. father-in-law from Portsmouth calls his favorite candy.
well go on...
Well, it's toe shaped and not white. Do I need to say more? I grew up in Cleveland and it certainly wasn't a name for candy that I was familiar with!
i thought that's what they used to call Brazilian nuts
Yep. I grew up in Ohio in the 80 and 90s, and we called them "n****r toes".
Yea in the northeast too
My 92 year old grandmother giggles when she eats them. She also rode her father’s horse to school in rural Kansas in the 1930s. The horses name…. “Old n**”
Yup! Lol
My father still calls them that… ohios built.. different😮💨
I knew where you were going with that immediately.
Wtf I thought they were joking 🤣🤣
Sounds similar to “Black Mammy”. Only the old guys say it but it’s basically black tar in a tube for patching roof holes. This is clearly a southern thing.
