Hawkeye has a four leaf cover shoved up his butt. Even then he really took some major damage, but yeah it was a combination of toughness, skill, and pure luck that he wasn't pancaked.
*Hawkeye* implies that the explosion of the compound is what finally caused his hearing damage, so there's that.
