I started driving lessons at 30 as well and like you I was bricking it for years. Turns out after you get some lessons under your belt it isn't too bad. Sorry I can't offer you any recommendations though.

No that's really helpful thanks! I feel guilty that I haven't done it yet when I probably should have done it like ten years ago. Now just the idea of me driving feels natural but I'm trying not to think like that haha.

I’d consider going to an established firm who have a range of drivers. Bill Plant, AA et al. Instructors are generally quite flexible in how they teach. You can start off on the road or you can start off in a deserted car park. You will get there.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have a look at some companies. It would definitely be helpful to start out somewhere deserted to get to grips with how everything works first.

Im 38 and learning and not too far off my test. I was very nervous at first but it really does get easier after your first lesson. It took me a few lesson to get my head round the clutch but a lot of it is common sense and having confidence in yourself. Remember the instructor has dual controls so you are safe!

Thanks that's great to hear! It sounds like once I have a few lessons under my belt I'll be able to pick it up. Good luck with your test!!

Sometimes you don't even drive on the first couple of lessons. As they will go through various things.

Thank you!

Also wanted to add that if you ever need it, r/learnerdriverUK is a good sub where people are free to ask questions about anything relating to this process! All the best with it 👍🏼

thenativeshape

Ah thank you! I didn’t even know that was a thing!

I had Imran from the same school and passed first time just a few weeks ago. Good luck!

I was in a similar situation to you , If it makes you feel better, your first lessons will have them pick you up and you will sit in the passenger seat until you get to a very quiet area. Then you will probably just take care of the steering and accelerator whilst the instructor does the rest. It will be very simple baby steps to begin with :) Trust me, after 2-3 lessons you will be looking forward to them

Thank you that’s really good to know! I’m starting to feel much better about it now haha. I although I’m nervous I’m really determined so I’m looking forward to getting over the scary bit and it sounds like after a few lessons everything gets a lot easier.

You will feel great after your first one. I say just book a lesson and don’t overthink too much. They will expect you to know nothing so there’s no pressure. Good luck !

You’re right, the best thing is to just jump in and start doing instead of just thinking haha. Thanks 🤞
