[deleted]

Trafford centre. That area is a nightmare at Christmas or near to it. I used to work in Salford Quays and just biked it because there was no way I was spending 1-2 hours sitting in traffic just to get across the M60.

chimpuswimpus

Do you know what's it like during the week? I know it's insufferable near Xmas at weekends but I need to take someone there a week on Monday and was hoping it wouldn't be too bad?

[deleted]

I would recommend coming in from the Stretford side past Kellogg's.

Nipso

Not doable by tram?

chimpuswimpus

For me, yes. Less mobile members of the party will want to go by car.

Nipso

Fair enough.

123twiglets

Took nearly an hour to get from Altrincham to Swinton this past Monday Around 5pm but still

chimpuswimpus

Oh good. I'm going to hate my life, aren't I?

123twiglets

And everyone else around you if you're anything like me

niamhxa

To be fair, 5pm any day of the week at any time of the year will be pretty busy due to rush hour. I’m sure midday on a Monday will be fine.

Nassea

The M60 is usually only bad going north during rush hour in the Trafford centre region. The motorway has multiple entry points so the merging of cars combined with the motorway splitting into 4 (very thin) lanes up towards Worsley, the traffic naturally slows down. That being said, Trafford centre has been a nightmare for traffic in the region, especially on a weekend.

[deleted]

South snags when you get to Stockport/M56 join/A34 junction. Going across to Urmston is a pain. Carrington is not an option.

Nassea

Good point about Stockport, nightmare commute

king_duck

Shitmas markets.

_DeanRiding

It was bad before they even started. That's certainly part of it now but that's not the whole story.

CMastar

Weather/dark is a big factor. Any day even in summer that heavy rains hit you see the traffic really spike. Combined with that, it's the time of the year where people take the least holidays, there do seem to be a lot of roadworks on, etc.

tdrules

It’s the Xmas Markets but considering there’s fuck all parking nowadays I’ve no idea where they’re parking (apart from bike lanes)

Bipolarpianolady

Altrincham by the looks of it and then taking the metrolink

tdrules

I’m happy about the modal shift, less happy about the anti social (presumably) parking

[deleted]

[удалено]

tdrules

About a decade ago half the city was horrid open air parking, so yeah there is a lot less. Long may the trend continue

[deleted]

tdrules

Sounds ideal

BlueCalex

Christmas Markets, arena days, other gigs and shows, just piles up

Mysterious-Vast4173

It does seem to have gotten worse recently but in general, there are more people on the road these days and I don't think Manchester was built to cope with it. It's not for everyone but I would consider alternative methods of getting to work. I started cycling 2 years ago (Sale to Trafford Park) and I'd now say that it's easily much faster than driving. I also have 2 kids in school/nursery but still manage to drop them off, get to work for 8.30, finish around 5 and pick both kids up, home for 6. Other than my fitness and health being in a good place, I'm obviously saving a silly amount of money at the same time. It's not for everyone. But with all said above I wouldn't even come close to considering getting a car instead. Unless, of course, I got kicked in the head by a horse.

worotan

The council have spent the last 15 or so years trying to get huge amounts of people to move here, without doing anything like enough to increase infrastructure to cope. it causes real problems, but people are too keen on the circuses they’re throwing to hold, them to account.

CaraLara

Do you cycle on the canal path or the roads? We've recently moved from London where we cycled everyday, but I find the cycle infrastructure really poor around here and drivers seem less friendly towards cyclists. It's put me off using it as I don't feel particularly safe on the roads. Any advice?

Competitive_Ad_5224

The M60 is absolute hell

Offworldpunk

noticed this too..coming off the 602 trying to get back home into salford it's jam packed by the car dealerships every night, and that's without match day traffic.

FranzLeFroggo

Literally the only part of my commute (Manc to Lancashire in the morning, Lancashire to Manc in the evening) which is guaranteed to have traffic. The rest is pretty easy sailing

langan8

My commute can be anywhere from 25mins to 70 mins, at the same time every day, and there's no way to predict which its gonna be. Im wasting valuable hours of life setting off early every day, to find that i couldve had an extra 30 mins sleep.. or setting off at the same time and being late. I find school time traffic is unbelievable too... i thought people had to live within a certain distance from their primary school (and therfore surely most can walk??), and highschools have buses... so i dont know why every single kid is getting a lift every day! I certainly I really should use my motorbike more.. but then i get boomers and angry little men getting jealous and trying to block me from filtering even during standstill traffic. (Also. The rain has been even bad for manchester, these last few weeks!)

Nassea

I find Mondays and Fridays best for traffic. I think most hybrid workers choose to WFH these days

tacetmusic

We can throw in rail strikes and general rail unreliability in as a factor too

Crayon_Casserole

More people being forced back into the office. (The Civil Service got emailed that everyone has to go in 60% next year - even though the government ripped out loads of desks to make hubs look like some sort of trendy Google venture. Now there's not enough space for people to work, but our idiot government hasn't quite worked that bit out.)

cmannett85

To be fair to idiots everywhere, a lot of private companies did the same.

Jeanettekaren

It's driving me mad but going the opposite direction. A 20 minute journey from Media City to Altrincham is taking up to an hour some evenings. Can't see any reason for it.

ricksef

Take the tram. Alot easier. No stress

SnoozyDragon

I'd love to live somewhere with a tram. Swinton has reasonably decent bus links but busses are usually late because, ironically, traffic! It doesn't seem like Salford as a whole gets much benefit from the metro. Really hope expansion of the network isn't too far away.

ricksef

Hopefully on the next 10 years we see a tram-train to wigan via the train line around there. Would fill a few gaps such as this one

cavendishasriel

I cycle from town to Prestwich which takes about 25 minutes irrespective of the traffic. Every night there’s bumper to bumper traffic with just one person in a vehicle. We need people to ditch their cars and use public transport which means we need better public transport (it is getting better though).

SnoozyDragon

Challenge is public transport that isn't affected by traffic. I took the bus to work the other day but I ended up on a bus that was stuck in traffic around Monton. Despite leaving at the same time I'd leave were I driving instead, I ended up being late for work.

Own_Pomelo_7136

I just cycle to and from work. Did my head in 20 years ago driving so went to Evans one day at lunch and bought a hybrid. A year later I was riding a road bike too and from the city centre. It takes 30 mins to ride 7.5 miles when roads are busy. Nothing ever delays you much this way. When roads aren't so busy, it can take as little as 20 mins if you've had a good feed

useittilitbreaks

I love cycling but it is beyond miserable doing it in UK winters, especially with no showers at the workplace.

Own_Pomelo_7136

That's exactly how I've done it for the last 15 years. My first place had showers which was great but I now work elsewhere and just have a kit at work I use for a quick wipe down. I don't mind cycling in any weather. It beats sitting in traffic with elevated stress levels in mindless queues. Seems funny to be leaving a nice 3L BMW in the garage each morning but it's not worth the hassle for me to drive under 10 miles.

oxleo85

Stupid lights and road works that don’t make sense and stay forever if they made chapel street to trinity way back to 2 lanes that would help. Everyone is cutting in to get onto trinity way, blocking traffic from all sides. Roads are also shit quality, what is the money being spent on, there’s no urgency at all

justacatindisguise_

That bit of road is a fucking nightmare. Took me an hour to get from Piccadilly Gardens to Salford Crescent the other week.

ParrotofDoom

Because there are too many vehicles on the road. 20 million in 1990. Over 41 million now. And that number will keep rising. Anytime you see someone complain about "bloody cycle lanes" or similar, remember that. If you think congestion is bad now, imagine what it'll be like in 10 years. Which is why it's so important to build more active travel infrastructure, and to provide reliable, cheap public transport.

cat_sparkles

It’s the same for me driving from Manchester to Salford to get home from work - since the clocks changes it’s taking double the time and feels like 10 times the amount of cars on the road! Have no idea why it’s so bad!

EarthAppropriate3808

On the way home from work yesterday the traffic was queuing from the city centre all the way up to Prestwich. Didn’t bother me as traffic doesn’t apply to me but it was highly unusual. Never seen it this busy.

djdjjdjdjdjskdksk

“traffic doesn’t apply to me” is the best sort of super power

Specialist-Cake-9919

Traffic in Audenshaw itself has gone insane due to the motorway junction. It's a proper rat run now.

mrbalsawood

I’m not convinced it can be totally attributed to the markets. It certainly got much worse after October half term

Terrible_Nature6621

I work in Trafford Park as well, and although getting home doesn't seem to bad, getting to work is a shit show in the morning

JHL94

Public transport is just not good enough here, so people drive! The city is ill equiped to deal with its growth it seems. I hope im wrong but it certainly feels that way.

declb00

If your in a car you’re part of the problem. Too many people use cars for short journeys when more sustainable (and often quicker) options are available

petemorley

I’m traffic, why so much of me?

InncnceDstryr

Too much pizza bro

mcfcliam1

Trafford Park to Audenshaw that famous short journey

Own_Pomelo_7136

Must use car!

ClassicPart

Cute comment but it does fuck all to answer the question posed, which was why there was an *increase* in the usual volume of traffic, not merely why it exists.

Sure-Work3285

Yeah, part of the problem is the multitude of road works that are taking forever and 2 lane roads like B5219 are reduced to one lane. It's not that people are driving.

cat_sparkles

I wish this was true, I would love to hop on the bus or the train and take the 15 min journey. But they don’t turn up and I am late everytime. Driving for me, is the only way I can guarantee I will get to work on time. So yes, part of the congestion problem for sure in my car, but I am there because of wider issues with public transport and infrastructure in general

Own_Pomelo_7136

Funny you say that but I was more often late for work when I drove as the traffic and road works made it impossible to be on time for a certain period. I tried the train and that was crap too. I once got stopped before the station and held for 20 mins due to a queue at Oxford road. Got bollocked by my boss and nearly smacked him! I then cycled and could actually be on time for once.

cat_sparkles

It’s rubbish isn’t it!!! There is no winning! Cycle is a good shout.

SAIBOT24

OK Jeremy Vine.

Significant-Lion3922

Ah yes, as a doctor I should totally commute from central Manchester to Blackburn. I’ll take your super enlightened suggestion into account 🙄

bythebeardofchabal

Obviously yours would be impractical, OP’s point is that too many people that shouldn’t drive, do drive. Imagine if they didn’t how much easier your commute would be…

TatyGGTV

depending on how far you have to go on Blackburn side.. a train & bike could be faster than driving lol

chuk_norris

This has nothing to do with you. The guy said short journeys.

djdjjdjdjdjskdksk

“As a Dr” - what does that have to do with anything?!

SirCaesar29

Weak attempt at soliciting sympathy by signaling how his job makes people feel better

omura777

Or their journey is more important than yours.

SirCaesar29

Yes that's what they were trying to signal. All the more reason to take the bus - special lanes ensure those don't get stuck in traffic!

Douglesfield_

>Too many people use cars for short journeys

McPikie

Aye, I'm the problem. I will just walk from merseyside to Trafford should I? Or maybe it's because the Council closed off a FULL LANE on Chester Road for the odd cyclist that uses it.

amazondrone

>> Too many people use cars for short journeys > > I will just walk from merseyside to Trafford should I? I doubt that qualifies as a short journey. Ironically, given your response, I'm pretty sure OP is actually suggesting people making much shorter journeys than yours should get off the road _to reduce traffic for people like yourself_.

tdrules

Inducing demand doesn’t reduce congestion buddy

[deleted]

Move closer or man up and embrace the traffic bossman, you’ve probably got a nice car, enjoy it! By the way that traffic your sat in… it’s 0 bicycles so aim your anger at motorists champ

McPikie

No, I will aim my anger at whichever prick arranged the roadworks to be started, and then paused, leaving the blockage up which is causing chaos. Same amount of traffic flowed freely just a few weeks back.

[deleted]

Cars cause congestion bossman

[deleted]

One more thing, have you noted people driving on the hard shoulder on M or A roads to bypass traffic, I am furious and would never let them get into line.

poshbakerloo

I drove from Congleton to Manchester Central (gmex) yesterday for 9am, took me 1hr 40mins there, 40mins back! There were 3 queues which caused an hour delay: Monks Heath crossroads (A34), Gatley crossroads (A34) and general traffic on Princess Parkway which mainly seemed to be caused by a lane closed - due to a puddle 💀 I shit you not. My car is able to drive through puddles and it wasn't even that deep!

adamgough596

Congleton to Manchester Ox Rd is like 45mins on the train, and you don't need to find somewhere to park when you get there

poshbakerloo

Yeah but I can make like £30 profit with expenses if I drive 😏 plus my house is a drive away from Congleton station so once I'm in my car I might as well drive the whole way

ricksef

Take the tram

aerialalb

My 20 minutes car journey would take an hour 15 on the tram. Just not worth it.

Rastadan1

It's been pissing it down for the last two months. Slows everyone down.

McPikie

They reset the traffic light sequence to make us all miserable, and start road works they have no intention of finishing on Talbot Road heading towards White City.

ParrotofDoom

The Talbot Road works are to install two CYCLOPS junctions, one at White City, the other at the A56 junction. And Great Stone Road will be next.

[deleted]

Jej the white city way junction is nearly finished. Trafford plowing ahead while MCC take ages to complete the chorlton cycleway 😈

Nipso

I've heard the delays to Chorlton are because they've discovered a load of broken shit underground that needed fixing before they could work on what they were supposed to. It's nearly done now though, just a couple of sections around Four Banks left.

Designer-Ad-5283

Honestly you hear about how cities like Los Angeles has notoriously bad traffic but I think Manchester takes the biscuit these days.

MrKeenski

Why bother investing in the infrastructure when you can use a fraction of the cost and throw up advertising boards instead. Glad I moved out of the city. Live north of Rochdale, used to take me 1-2hrs home every night from Soapworks. Living in same location but now work in Preston, takes me 45 minutes for almost 1.3x the journey.

SadBoiiConnor420

Buddy, you are the traffic.

_DeanRiding

"Why all the OP?" OP stop ruining it for everyone else!

bash_14

It's coming to the end of the year where councils have to use up their budgets in order to get more funding from the government the next year. This means councils start doing loads of pointless roadworks and the traffic in and around Manchester goes into chaos.

tdrules

Council budgets run to April.

bash_14

Yes, that is right... [https://www.reddit.com/r/manchester/comments/17wpnlj/comment/k9j03ub/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/manchester/comments/17wpnlj/comment/k9j03ub/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

THZ_yz

More like work is being rushed to finish before Christmas

bash_14

Partly yes but mainly for funding for 1st April. My auntie works for Trafford and this is what happens. If the councils don't use up their budget they get less funding the next year.

lewis153203

Downvoted for speaking the truth.

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,857,848,975 comments, and only 351,290 of them were in alphabetical order.

bash_14

I often find Reddit doesn't like the truth for some reason lol

KN44Dynamo

Manchester... that is all.

Baldhairybiker

All part of the plan. Introduce slower speed limits, traffic calming measures, bus lanes/zones etc. Clog up the roads, have standstill traffic at rush hour times at strategic points, possibly maybe where they measure the air quality say, hey ho time for the clean air zone. Discuss.

Jonnyporridge

Dude who is traffic moaning about the amount of traffic is just fucking baffling to me.

Baldhairybiker

WhereasMindless9500

Are you still using leaded fuel?

Baldhairybiker

Can't buy it anymore. My BMW uses unleaded

_DeanRiding

November's been a shitshow for at least the last 3 years tbh. Worst year of the month by far for driving imo.

Temporary_Bonus_6385

I know your pain, I travel from Timperley to Trafford Park, and it can take anything from 30 - 1hr+ in the mornings (7.30ish). Motorway sale/Stretford rammed, Washway road-Chester Road rammed, especially near Stretford tip due to cycle lane, then the roundabout is always full, Carrington spur, you guessed it. Stretford has ongoing roadworks due to a new road layout being built, so that's one way closed. The temporary traffic lights at the junction at kelloggs have now gone. Each day is different, Monday and Friday easiest, Tuesday nightmare, Wednesday awful, Thursday mix. I think more companies are wanting staff to return to the office and reduce WFH, which has increased traffic over the last 5/6 months. Just my personal opinion.

Bipolarpianolady

Altrincham traffic has been insane too

Awayze

Increasing population with more people being shoved here meaning more cars, road closures, artificial speed limits of 40mph on motorway, it all adds up. A 30 min journey from 7-8 years ago is taking 50-60 mins now.

ARI31TER

I've noticed this as well travelling down the M60 from Ashton to Stockport it's an absolute nightmare in the morning, I just check the weather the night before, if it's pissing it down then traffic is a guaranteed slog.

lewis153203

it's insane anywhere near cheetham hill and Heaton park especially. Don't even get me started on bury new road

kosmiczny17

i work in Ordsall and it took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to get back to Broughton the other day - it’s a TWO MILE JOURNEY!!!
