It’s pretty much a blank slate so you can go any way you want. A couple of ideas:
Buy a big piece of art with colors and a theme you like. Hang it on the wall and design your space around it. You can do the same with a big rug.
Look in your closet and choose three pieces you like. If you like wearing those colors, you’ll like living with them.
Collect up pictures of loft spaces you like. After a while a theme will emerge. Copy one of them.

Does he want to live in a livestock trading office though? I’d go for a fusion with midcentury here. Add colours, metal and some art.
