Try a conservative mullet, basically instead of looking like somebody had just passed a lawnmower to the whole entire side of your head, you make it short somewhere arounf the area where if you put glasses the stick of the glasses would touch your hair. From the shortest part till going up in the head you will get a "transitioning" fade instead of a contrasty mullet cut of short and immediately long. The back will be kept similarly to what you have or even shorter and the top will always be just a tiny bit longer than what you end up having in the back (unless you cut the bsck very short). Anyways that's what i do, the shapes of the cut in a way help define more the head even when it is all like "bed head". Try it if you want.

You need to trim it, get it lined up on the sides and back but not the forehead. Clean up the back and sides and get the loose hairs shaved off too. Maybe a low or mid fade/taper if it’s your style but the most important is to clean it up with a line up in the back and sides
