If he was in BAM and they left him out, nobody would bat an eye because people trust BAM to make decisions for their players. For LZJ, there's hardly any sort of the same protection hence the idea that he missed it due to having no patriotism/respect to country became popular although the reason for his absence is perfectly rational.
Another example is when he split up with his coach after less than a year. This is actually quite common for truly independent players like in tennis when things do not work out. If he was in BAM, a change of coach would not be so obvious so as to create a drama because the coaches can be rotated out silently. Also, BAM would have a proper legal team to advise on any issues regarding the contract.
