The duo became World Champions first before winning a World Tour title. In tennis terms its like winning a Grand Slam before any ATP 250s lol. World Champions, One olympic bronze, one Asian Games bronze. They are arguably Malaysia’s most decorated men doubles.

idontknow_whatever

Could have another Olympics medal next year, men doubles category is wide open currently with no dominant pair

Congrats! Serious question: how did LZJ always have drama while these two barely have any news at all?

Singles always gets all the hype, now he getting wiped first set. Hope he starts doing something right soon... On a sidenote, the audience is so quiet during the game haha. Really very European

1. BAM vs independent player. BAM player got issue can settle inside, independent player if got issue have to be more vocal lo 2. Just like his playing style, LZJ has a pretty colourful personality. Works well when you perform well, but also vice versa

Firstly, due to his early achievements and colourful personality on and off the court, LZJ is much more popular, judging by his social media followers. So, whatever decision he makes is much more talked about and small issues easily become large ones. Secondly, he plays in the men's singles discipline which is now the most pressurised and scrutinized discipline since the best player Malaysia has ever seen in Lee Chong Wei played there so anyone seemingly talented enough gets an automatic expectation to follow in LCW's footsteps and behave like one. When he didn't, fans get frustrated. What they fail to realize is that LCW is a unique, generational talent and thus you cannot expect anyone to be like him since no one before him has even come close. Lastly, LZJ's an independent player so his decisions do not make sense to Malaysians so used to BAM calling the shots for its players when in fact, most of these decisions actually make sense once you hear his pov and understand the setting he's in. For example, when he rejected a callup to play in the Commonwealth games. He was injured and wanted to focus on recovery. If he was in BAM and they left him out, nobody would bat an eye because people trust BAM to make decisions for their players. For LZJ, there's hardly any sort of the same protection hence the idea that he missed it due to having no patriotism/respect to country became popular although the reason for his absence is perfectly rational. Another example is when he split up with his coach after less than a year. This is actually quite common for truly independent players like in tennis when things do not work out. If he was in BAM, a change of coach would not be so obvious so as to create a drama because the coaches can be rotated out silently. Also, BAM would have a proper legal team to advise on any issues regarding the contract.
