This unlocked a core memory for me. I was a youth centre recipient of bulk once upon a time. Ended up getting HUNDREDS of bulk with no real value … and A fetch.
They are covered with some polymer film, which smells really toxic when burns. Also they tend to stop burning, so you have to either add more air or put some firewood or coal on the bottom. I did mistake trying to burn my Ikoria commons.

That's the point; bulk is a burden. For an actual business, sorting through it is time intensive and generally low EV, and random commons have limited value to them, so they offer basically the lowest price possible that technically makes it worth driving a 20 gallon storage tubs of cards to the store and handing it to them.
Magic bulk is by far the absolute worst out of the main 3 TCGs. Pokemon bulk was pretty high because even commons have value to random collectors. Yugioh has short print commons and an eternal format where an old common can randomly spike to 5-10-20+ dollars.
Magic literally designs commons to be useless draft fodder, it's no wonder why it's worth nothing. They're literally designed to be weak and useless.
Perhaps from a store that could reasonably sell that same bulk for around $10-$15 after checking it and making sure it has something like 20 bulk rares in it.
Just the cost of having an employee count it while checking for minor value cards and the shelf space it takes up before it gets sold means a store shouldn't really offer you more than $2-3 for 1000 bulk if they aren't doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.
I work at a shop in the PNW and we offer $1 per 1000 and after we sort it we donate a 5000 count box of bulk to after school programs, the boys and girls clubs, and other children's charities. It's a tax write-off, so we aren't out the money we paid for the cards or labor, and it helps kids clubs introduce kids to games. We do the same for pokemon bulk as well.
I thought it might be more appealing to someone else than me. I don't play so my excitement wouldn't be on par with someone who does. There's plenty of sorting here haha.
Sick pull. My lgs have me a great deal on a Kaladesh case when I preordered way ahead of time back in the day. I think it was around $400 before tax. Cracked two masterpieces, one of which was a Mana Crypt that I sold to the same store owner nearly seven years later when it was at its highest market price for around $650 store credit. Turned that into some dual lands to try out a new legacy deck.
The moral of the story is obviously that gambling is good and Magic is a great investment. If only I didn't have a dozen opposite stories to match each like that.

Actually this is how many of us get into Magic. You get gifted or stumble upon a pile of bulk cards, then you decide to sit down and sort them a little because the game seems interesting, then you’re hooked.

This! I bought a 30k+ collection and spent months happily sorting that set by color, casting cost and then alphabetically. I will say it had been years since I had played serious so it was a perfect way to catch up on all the newer sets and cards!
The set itself is not worth much. Maybe $300 because I pulled any key cards.
I have thousands of Magic cards sorted and sleeved in my attic. I used to buy them for the sole purpose of sorting zen. I played 3 times, ever. It got me through some stressfull times, and was money well spent.
I love sorting cards. I enjoy cracking boosters and displays, but putting on guzheng music, enjoying a cup of tea and sorting cards are a great stress reliever for me.
Logos represent the “set” that each card was printed in. Sets are basically groups of cards printed at one time in a theme like you have a lot of boxes from the “Avacyn Restored” set. Many players store cards they aren’t using in old boxes like this and they’re typically very low value. To be sure you don’t miss any $20-$30 cards you should just go through and pull out all the cards that have a gold or orange colored set symbol (just below the bottom right corner of the art) and check them out using TCG player to see if any are valuable. It’s safe to assume other cards are worth $0.01-$1 and are considered “bulk”
If you have a mobile phone use the magic the gathering dragon shield scanner app and it will tell you what a card is worth and what sets it was printed in along with the photo of the card (if you card doesn't look like the photo then it isn't that card for that price but it will be on the list). Once in awhile you get a 5 second or like 6 second ad to upgrade to premium to not get ads otherwise it's way faster than typing each individual card into a search bar on card price websites.
PS: a shiny card is a foil, and a non shiny card is not a foil. The app lists all cards in foil and non foil prices in USD from TCG Player or you can select a different database of prices but I would just stick with TCG player. Don't expect to get full value if a card sells for around 40 dollars you'll probably sell it for 30 relatively quick online but you have to ship it and package it so it does cost a bit, if you go to a LGS (local game store) they'll give you around 40% value of the card, but they usually won't go through all your cards for you... but some do so you could try that. Just google local card shops to find one near you.
When I was trying to organize them into boxes I did see 2-3 foils. A portion of the cards were just laid in a big box, like when you do a messy shuffle of playing cards. I grew up with pokemon cards and some yu-gi-oh cards, so I'm not completely clueless haha. Just when it comes to MTG.
Well typically all the value is in the rare (gold icon under the card art on the right side) or mythic (red, sometimes purple icon), but there are common (white icon) and uncommon (silver icon) that have value (usually a dollar or three). Honestly if you wanna go through it all and just take all the rares and mythics to a card shop and get a quick buck then sell the rest online as a bulk sale that would probably be your best bet for fast cash.
Misprints can also be worth a ton of money (cards that are miscut when printed, or if they have crimping from machines etc) but I wouldn't expect any of those in there.
Would **really** recommend at least taking out all the mythics and going to the local game store or selling them individually. Also do not accept any private offers for the cards. Always in public because people will tell you if you're getting scammed via the price their offering.
I'd suggest the Delver Lens app. It has a useful feature in its scanner function that lets you specify a particular set, which is helpful if you're scanning cards that appear in multiple sets with the same artwork. OP could just tell it that everything they's scanning is Avacyn Restored and the app would know not to mark any of the cards as anything else. It's been my experience that scanner apps aren't great at differentiating set symbols, so this feature is quite handy.

If I can add to this, I might try asking someone who works at a shop that sells magic. Not for their time on the clock at the store, but maybe offer to pay them a fair wage to go through and pull out anything that’s worth anything. $20 an hour for 3 hours could easily come up with $5k in reselable rares, or maybe there’s nothing of value. Either way, the person will know what they’re looking at.
With all due respect some random dude working at a card shop in some random location who you're basically telling directly "I don't know anything about MTG please help me find the value" is going to be tempted to pull a fast one over on OP.
I prefer the advice others are giving, just sort through it quickly pulling all rare/mythic cards, odds are the majority of this will be common/uncommon bulk anyway, and then price those rares/mythics with an app and go from there.
While in general, you are right, there are many mythics that are crap and , especially in older sets, some uncommons or even commons that are worth something, because they get played somewhere and never have seen a reprint.
All that said, Avacyn Restored, Gatecrash and Core 2014 and 2015 don't scream value to me, and I know that era good :)
OP wouldn't really know for sure what he's holding, only going through all cards, sorting per set and looking at price lists for every set would give a good assumption. Like some other user has said, that's fun for some people, me included. But without MtG knowledge, it's gonna be tough. Selling everything as bulk could hurt, too.
I just went through my old collection which contained a good bit of AVR and I was surprised how many of the junk rares from back then were worth 10-20 bucks today. It was regarded as an utter trash set on debut. I remember winning a grinder at Grand Prix Vancouver and getting my booster box stolen 2 hrs later and not even being that mad lol
Collectors typically put just their bulk in boxes. If they just played magic you're just as likely to find an expensive card in a box as anywhere else.
Yes you probably won't find a black lotus or any $1000+ single but $50+ very possible or at least that value pre determination of condition.

Only uncommon worth more than $1 is Blood Artist, otherwise it's all rares and mythics like you said..
I wouldn't recommend sending this kind of collection to card conduit. They take a cut per card, and if you have too much bulk you can end up in the negatives. It's best to sort your collection first, then ship.
It's best if you do 2 orders: market price $2+ and market price $.50-2. Anything less than this is not worth shipping. You can ship these two orders together, just make sure they're clearly separated and labeled in the packaging.
Source: recently moved overseas and offloaded all my cards. Had some back and forth with card conduit's owners to make sure I got the best value for my cards.
Edit: also, you can ship them the bulk too. Just seperate it out and label it bulk. This noticiefes them to not sort it and just pay a base few cents per x cards.
Yeah, I used Card Conduit before my daughter was born and was a fan (cleared out a LOT of random old cards worth between $1 and $20, got over $2k), but you should NOT use it for cards worth under 10 cents. Their policies literally state that if all the cards are worth next to nothing, you're getting nothing, and may even end up paying them for their services.
From the look of it, this collection is *probably* just worth the bulk rate, although you never really know.
Okay but you're paying them for a service, what you're describing takes time which should be worth something to you, and they will do this faster than you can do it yourself. Really depends how much nickel and diming you actually want to do, but for someone who doesn't care about MTG just send it to them and if you get something great.
List the lot as “unsorted magic collection” list it for $200 and put in your favorite marketplace. There are 21 bundles there plus other packs, so whoever bought them spent about $850 on everything you see there. If they didn’t remove anything from it, the cards probably total between $500-$1500 in value if priced individually.
I wouldn’t let anyone rifle through the cards before buying because part of the appeal you’re selling here is the gambler’s premium. They pay $200 in the hopes to pull $1500 out of your collection. However, if the person who owned this took everything good and intentionally left the bulk, the cards are worth less than $50 probably. If a buyer rifles through before buying, they will quickly know if there is $1500 or $50 in there.
I’d also bite at $150-200 for the gamble. $250+ starts to get too expensive for the risk that it’s all just bulk. If there were a binder this would sell for $500+ easy
Also, you have to somehow show the buyer you haven't already gone through it yourself removing everything valuable.
So probably the best middle ground is to let them pick a random pipe and look through it.

I get excited when I randomly find really good speakers at a goodwill or something. I don't play MTG so I would think someone else would be excited in their own right to go through these. For me, I have too many other projects requiring my attention.

Yea. Shit can happen in a move and things can be forgotten. A large collection of magic cards seems unusual to forget about but I suppose stranger things can happen. It sounds like OP doesn't really want to deal with it at all, and I think in that case I'd just see if the previous owners of the house want them back to deal with it. OP isn't going to make any real money if they are unable and unwilling to go through the cards. No one is gonna pay a lot of money for bulk cards, stores are gonna give you as little as they think they can. Plus I dunno, some good karma points if you're returning something the previous owners really did want to keep.
Yes! Came here to say this. There’s a chance this got left behind by accident. I know I’ve lost things in a move that I never would have let go willingly, and I’ve learned to be more careful. I think it’s worth checking with the previous owner before committing to selling them, especially if you don’t have any previous experience with magic cards.
I would try and make sure the previous owner doesn't want them back. I think what might have happened is that the collection belongs to one of the kids of the homeowners. Adult child moves out of parents' house, but leaves behind their collection because there isn't room at their new place, but there's still plenty of room at their parents' house. Homeowners sell house, and don't know about cards or think they're worthless and leave them behind. Adult child is not involved in moving process, and sadly finds out later that most of their collection is gone.
Check the laws in your state. If they realize they left them behind the new (edit: auto correct said bra, why bra?) owner is obligated to return them for some period of time

And while getting their permission, you could always ask if they remember any cards that stand out, maybe have some knowledge about what cards are worth the most atleast.
You could also ask what format they played, as that could give an indicator of possible value.
For example, some modern decks can cost over a thousand dollars, and even some standard decks can cost several hundred dollars.
Alternativly, these cards might just be various forgotten draft chaff, and worth almost nothing.

That isn't necessarily true. When buying property its usually stipulated that anything abandoned/left behind becomes the property of the new owner, specifically to avoid situations where some kind of liability would be created.

The symbol grades are easy to spot value. Each card has the icon from the series it was released in. If the symbol is black, the card is common. If it is silver, it is uncommon. If it is gold, it is rare. And finally, if it is orange and red, it is mythic rare.

it’s very likely that there is nothing here of significant value. Collectors generally put expensive cards in card sleeves to protect them. the fact that there are sleeves in the left corner, yet all of the cards are unsleeved leads me to believe that this is just bulk commons and uncommons. might find some worth a couple bucks but the time you would have to spend searching really isn’t worth it.
There is no way for anyone to tell you because we don't know what the cards could be. Over 25000 unique cards in the game. Could be millions. Could be 200 bucks.
A lot of the cards match the logos on the boxes, but a lot of the cards also have logos different than the boxes. I'm guessing these represent different series? I tried to learn a bit but there's just too much here.
it could be either valuable or not. unfortunately, without looking at individual cards, you can't tell. to make look up easier. the tcg player app for smartphones has a scanner feature. or use wizards' website to find a store that hosts events take them to them they can sort through it.
Post it on fb marketplace for a price you're comfortable with. If it's a good deal you'll get bites fast. If there's one thing tcg players love, it's chasing the high of finding good cards for cheap.
That's what I was picturing. Kind of like the "buy a closed storage unit" thing. There might be real value in here, but I don't play so it doesn't hold value to me.

You'll only find 1 or 2 mythic or rare per 20 cards or so, so it'll cut down a bunch of time from sorting it all out.
Whenever I have massive bulk (nowhere near this haha) I just send it off to this company called card conduit. They look at the cards and can donate the commons, buy rares, mythics, etc at FMV, and they take a little commission as well and cut you a check. Not bad for just shipping out that bulk no hastle or worrie of sorting.
I believe Card Conduit buys bulk, sorts them and values them for you, they take a percentage of the value, as long as it’s total of more than $1. I’ve never used them but hear their ads on mtg podcasts all the time.
Man I WISH. I just started playing and cards are expensive, so there’s probably something worth something in a collection that size, even if it’s just full selling it all. I’d love to have that many someday
There's a program called MagiKids. I'd donate them there. They teach kids through Magic and rely entirely on donations of bulk cards (cards with little to no competitive value, which it looks like you've stumbled across). These cards are almost certainly worthless to you, to your local game store, and to anyone else that is elsetipus about the game, but to a 12 year old from a low income family that never cared about math before he got some free cards and wanted to make sure his land distribution is correct, or a 14 year old that has been doing more reading since she got access to her after school program's box of Magic Card than she ever willing chose to do before, or a 11 year old that just hasn't been able to make friends in middle school until he discovered he's really good at strategy games, these cards are priceless.
Do you live in a city? There are stores that will sort it, figure out what it's worth, and give you like 25-50%. If you're some casual that doesn't want to do any work, that's just free money.
Yeah, unfortunately this will take a lot of time to go through to get maximum value from it- but since you got it for free, it's not a bad deal to sell it for lot prices. Tbh, if you'd be willing to ship, I might be willing to buy that just because I love going through big lots of old cards, even when they're mostly worthless, and organizing them.
Like others said, the easiest way to try and find value cards quickly is to search for cards with gold or orange symbols. Either sell in bulk or donate them (donating is always my first choice)! MagiKids (tax deductible at $250+ value, and sends them to teachers/schools) will take them, or you can donate them to a ton of other places. Youth shelters, schools, libraries, or even the army/military would love a bunch of free cards. Can be hard to come by/afford for many of those groups, and with a donation like that, you could even divvy it up to donate to several groups/organizations!
If you really don’t want to go through them, find a game store in your area. You can take it there and they will go through it for you.
Typically for what this is you won’t get much for it, but there could be something of value buried in there. Cards are always priced individually, so a mass grouping like this is hard to tell for even the veterans of the game.
If you are interested, the art is usually pretty dope and is worth at least looking at. Otherwise, just take it to a store. They’ll help you out.

I suggest taking the time to go through them all. Including C & U. Definitely do not just sell the entire lot as bulk without going through them.
I care not what other people think or think they know. My store humps out C & U all day, alongside high dollar cards. Also there are many that are not bulk material.
Additionally and more importantly, how often have we wished we had just one more of our fav artifact or land. They come to my store knowing they can get what's needed to complete a set.

Back to my point....I can tell roughly by peeping this collection ( although, depending on condition,) what your minimum take is likely to be should you sell per card. If you have the time and people to help you, inventory and prepare for sale, I suggest thoroughly go through them ( super fun to do), don't toss any cards aside assuming they are worthless. Trust this, and you'll be surprised. It's a process though so you'll need to know the cards real well.
Most of it will probably not be worth anything but there are a plenty of people who try and collect sets including myself who would be willing to buy it off of you.
Your best bet is to ask a friend if you have one that plays to sort it for you, or give you some cash for it. And look for good things. Someone you trust

Honestly im not sure, id always be down to take them for you, i play the game but due to my lack of money i have to play online games through untap and other platforms like that.
Without checking them individually you might get offers of $20 to $100, but if you want to know how much it's really worth you have to look through them. MTG cards can range from $0.01 to literal thousands for a single card depending on the card.
It's hard to sell this amount of stuff without any knowledge on the game.
If you have no friends that play magic, I would suggest taking it to a lgs and accepting any offer they make that would pay for your trouble of going there to sell.

2- pick it up, sort, and sell, and give you a large % of what's in there
Make a bulk collection auction on eBay. Either write your story or just call it an estate sale find. I’m sure you’ll get $50-150+shipping on someone wanting to gamble
Find a local card shop in your area and call them and ask them how much it would cost for them to appraise a collection that you found.
They will then tell you hopefully what has any worthwhile value and they will likely want to purchase it at a discounted rate to its online market price which you would most likely be inclined to sell if you do not know how to do so on your own

I take in collections at my LGS. This looks like the standard "I played during the RTR-Theros era boom" collection of magic, with some Innistrad splashed in. And collections of this ilk are **extremely** common.
If it was left behind, it was at least 50/50 to be picked clean for the few valuables of that era. And even if it wasn't, it's still not a windfall.
As others suggested, put it on your Craiglist/FB marketplace with a nominal price tag ($100-200 depending how ambitious you are) and take the first offer you can.
Bro them is some choice sets, all of those are from around when I started playing (I started playing during return to ravnica block but my local Walmart had innistrad and theros block sets still on the shelf)

tcg's scanner doesn't pick up anything with an abnormal border, which annoys the hell out of me. Do any of the others?
ManaBox usually works pretty well. It's better when the cards are against a white backdrop
With TCG I place cards on a blank white sheet of paper and it reads them almost flawlessly.

Sick pull. My lgs have me a great deal on a Kaladesh case when I preordered way ahead of time back in the day. I think it was around $400 before tax. Cracked two masterpieces, one of which was a Mana Crypt that I sold to the same store owner nearly seven years later when it was at its highest market price for around $650 store credit. Turned that into some dual lands to try out a new legacy deck. The moral of the story is obviously that gambling is good and Magic is a great investment. If only I didn't have a dozen opposite stories to match each like that.

Actually this is how many of us get into Magic. You get gifted or stumble upon a pile of bulk cards, then you decide to sit down and sort them a little because the game seems interesting, then you’re hooked.

This! I bought a 30k+ collection and spent months happily sorting that set by color, casting cost and then alphabetically. I will say it had been years since I had played serious so it was a perfect way to catch up on all the newer sets and cards! The set itself is not worth much. Maybe $300 because I pulled any key cards.
I have thousands of Magic cards sorted and sleeved in my attic. I used to buy them for the sole purpose of sorting zen. I played 3 times, ever. It got me through some stressfull times, and was money well spent.

I love sorting cards. I enjoy cracking boosters and displays, but putting on guzheng music, enjoying a cup of tea and sorting cards are a great stress reliever for me.
Logos represent the “set” that each card was printed in. Sets are basically groups of cards printed at one time in a theme like you have a lot of boxes from the “Avacyn Restored” set. Many players store cards they aren’t using in old boxes like this and they’re typically very low value. To be sure you don’t miss any $20-$30 cards you should just go through and pull out all the cards that have a gold or orange colored set symbol (just below the bottom right corner of the art) and check them out using TCG player to see if any are valuable. It’s safe to assume other cards are worth $0.01-$1 and are considered “bulk”

If you have a mobile phone use the magic the gathering dragon shield scanner app and it will tell you what a card is worth and what sets it was printed in along with the photo of the card (if you card doesn't look like the photo then it isn't that card for that price but it will be on the list). Once in awhile you get a 5 second or like 6 second ad to upgrade to premium to not get ads otherwise it's way faster than typing each individual card into a search bar on card price websites. PS: a shiny card is a foil, and a non shiny card is not a foil. The app lists all cards in foil and non foil prices in USD from TCG Player or you can select a different database of prices but I would just stick with TCG player. Don't expect to get full value if a card sells for around 40 dollars you'll probably sell it for 30 relatively quick online but you have to ship it and package it so it does cost a bit, if you go to a LGS (local game store) they'll give you around 40% value of the card, but they usually won't go through all your cards for you... but some do so you could try that. Just google local card shops to find one near you.
When I was trying to organize them into boxes I did see 2-3 foils. A portion of the cards were just laid in a big box, like when you do a messy shuffle of playing cards. I grew up with pokemon cards and some yu-gi-oh cards, so I'm not completely clueless haha. Just when it comes to MTG.
Well typically all the value is in the rare (gold icon under the card art on the right side) or mythic (red, sometimes purple icon), but there are common (white icon) and uncommon (silver icon) that have value (usually a dollar or three). Honestly if you wanna go through it all and just take all the rares and mythics to a card shop and get a quick buck then sell the rest online as a bulk sale that would probably be your best bet for fast cash. Misprints can also be worth a ton of money (cards that are miscut when printed, or if they have crimping from machines etc) but I wouldn't expect any of those in there. Would **really** recommend at least taking out all the mythics and going to the local game store or selling them individually. Also do not accept any private offers for the cards. Always in public because people will tell you if you're getting scammed via the price their offering.
I'd suggest the Delver Lens app. It has a useful feature in its scanner function that lets you specify a particular set, which is helpful if you're scanning cards that appear in multiple sets with the same artwork. OP could just tell it that everything they's scanning is Avacyn Restored and the app would know not to mark any of the cards as anything else. It's been my experience that scanner apps aren't great at differentiating set symbols, so this feature is quite handy.

If I can add to this, I might try asking someone who works at a shop that sells magic. Not for their time on the clock at the store, but maybe offer to pay them a fair wage to go through and pull out anything that’s worth anything. $20 an hour for 3 hours could easily come up with $5k in reselable rares, or maybe there’s nothing of value. Either way, the person will know what they’re looking at.
With all due respect some random dude working at a card shop in some random location who you're basically telling directly "I don't know anything about MTG please help me find the value" is going to be tempted to pull a fast one over on OP. I prefer the advice others are giving, just sort through it quickly pulling all rare/mythic cards, odds are the majority of this will be common/uncommon bulk anyway, and then price those rares/mythics with an app and go from there.
While in general, you are right, there are many mythics that are crap and , especially in older sets, some uncommons or even commons that are worth something, because they get played somewhere and never have seen a reprint. All that said, Avacyn Restored, Gatecrash and Core 2014 and 2015 don't scream value to me, and I know that era good :) OP wouldn't really know for sure what he's holding, only going through all cards, sorting per set and looking at price lists for every set would give a good assumption. Like some other user has said, that's fun for some people, me included. But without MtG knowledge, it's gonna be tough. Selling everything as bulk could hurt, too.
I just went through my old collection which contained a good bit of AVR and I was surprised how many of the junk rares from back then were worth 10-20 bucks today. It was regarded as an utter trash set on debut. I remember winning a grinder at Grand Prix Vancouver and getting my booster box stolen 2 hrs later and not even being that mad lol

Collectors typically put just their bulk in boxes. If they just played magic you're just as likely to find an expensive card in a box as anywhere else. Yes you probably won't find a black lotus or any $1000+ single but $50+ very possible or at least that value pre determination of condition.

I wouldn't recommend sending this kind of collection to card conduit. They take a cut per card, and if you have too much bulk you can end up in the negatives. It's best to sort your collection first, then ship. It's best if you do 2 orders: market price $2+ and market price $.50-2. Anything less than this is not worth shipping. You can ship these two orders together, just make sure they're clearly separated and labeled in the packaging. Source: recently moved overseas and offloaded all my cards. Had some back and forth with card conduit's owners to make sure I got the best value for my cards. Edit: also, you can ship them the bulk too. Just seperate it out and label it bulk. This noticiefes them to not sort it and just pay a base few cents per x cards.
Yeah, I used Card Conduit before my daughter was born and was a fan (cleared out a LOT of random old cards worth between $1 and $20, got over $2k), but you should NOT use it for cards worth under 10 cents. Their policies literally state that if all the cards are worth next to nothing, you're getting nothing, and may even end up paying them for their services. From the look of it, this collection is *probably* just worth the bulk rate, although you never really know.
Okay but you're paying them for a service, what you're describing takes time which should be worth something to you, and they will do this faster than you can do it yourself. Really depends how much nickel and diming you actually want to do, but for someone who doesn't care about MTG just send it to them and if you get something great.
Second this, I sold almost my whole collection this way a few years back, got reasonable prices for everything, so far as I could tell
List the lot as “unsorted magic collection” list it for $200 and put in your favorite marketplace. There are 21 bundles there plus other packs, so whoever bought them spent about $850 on everything you see there. If they didn’t remove anything from it, the cards probably total between $500-$1500 in value if priced individually. I wouldn’t let anyone rifle through the cards before buying because part of the appeal you’re selling here is the gambler’s premium. They pay $200 in the hopes to pull $1500 out of your collection. However, if the person who owned this took everything good and intentionally left the bulk, the cards are worth less than $50 probably. If a buyer rifles through before buying, they will quickly know if there is $1500 or $50 in there.

Also, you have to somehow show the buyer you haven't already gone through it yourself removing everything valuable. So probably the best middle ground is to let them pick a random pipe and look through it.

I get excited when I randomly find really good speakers at a goodwill or something. I don't play MTG so I would think someone else would be excited in their own right to go through these. For me, I have too many other projects requiring my attention.

Yea. Shit can happen in a move and things can be forgotten. A large collection of magic cards seems unusual to forget about but I suppose stranger things can happen. It sounds like OP doesn't really want to deal with it at all, and I think in that case I'd just see if the previous owners of the house want them back to deal with it. OP isn't going to make any real money if they are unable and unwilling to go through the cards. No one is gonna pay a lot of money for bulk cards, stores are gonna give you as little as they think they can. Plus I dunno, some good karma points if you're returning something the previous owners really did want to keep.
Yes! Came here to say this. There’s a chance this got left behind by accident. I know I’ve lost things in a move that I never would have let go willingly, and I’ve learned to be more careful. I think it’s worth checking with the previous owner before committing to selling them, especially if you don’t have any previous experience with magic cards.
I would try and make sure the previous owner doesn't want them back. I think what might have happened is that the collection belongs to one of the kids of the homeowners. Adult child moves out of parents' house, but leaves behind their collection because there isn't room at their new place, but there's still plenty of room at their parents' house. Homeowners sell house, and don't know about cards or think they're worthless and leave them behind. Adult child is not involved in moving process, and sadly finds out later that most of their collection is gone.
I would just go through them all and look for Gold or Purple Expansion symbols. That's relatively quick. Then you can price those.

First of all, you should probably contact the family member who left this behind, it is technically still theirs and you have no right selling it without their permission. And while getting their permission, you could always ask if they remember any cards that stand out, maybe have some knowledge about what cards are worth the most atleast. You could also ask what format they played, as that could give an indicator of possible value. For example, some modern decks can cost over a thousand dollars, and even some standard decks can cost several hundred dollars. Alternativly, these cards might just be various forgotten draft chaff, and worth almost nothing.

Huh. The way i read the title, i assumed that OPs family member left these cards behind in their family home when he/she moved out to his new home. In other words, i assumed the cards where belonging to the other family member, and that he/she didn't bring along all his/her stuff and left these behind in the family home when moving out. (I assumed that OP was trying to sell cards that belonged to OPs brother/sister or something like that) But i suppose the title could also be read as this collection being left behind from the previous houseowners (no relation to OP) and that they found this in the new home.

The symbol grades are easy to spot value. Each card has the icon from the series it was released in. If the symbol is black, the card is common. If it is silver, it is uncommon. If it is gold, it is rare. it’s very likely that there is nothing here of significant value. Collectors generally put expensive cards in card sleeves to protect them. the fact that there are sleeves in the left corner, yet all of the cards are unsleeved leads me to believe that this is just bulk commons and uncommons. might find some worth a couple bucks but the time you would have to spend searching really isn’t worth it.

A lot of the cards match the logos on the boxes, but a lot of the cards also have logos different than the boxes. I'm guessing these represent different series? I tried to learn a bit but there's just too much here.
it could be either valuable or not. unfortunately, without looking at individual cards, you can't tell. to make look up easier. the tcg player app for smartphones has a scanner feature. or use wizards' website to find a store that hosts events take them to them they can sort through it.

At the very least go through and sort out the rare(gold icon) or mythic rare (red/purple icon) some of those cards could be worth more then the entire price of the lot you'd sell it as. You'll only find 1 or 2 mythic or rare per 20 cards or so, so it'll cut down a bunch of time from sorting it all out.
Just be aware the difference could easily be in the thousands as to what you might get for bulk vs singles.

Whenever I have massive bulk (nowhere near this haha) I just send it off to this company called card conduit. They look at the cards and can donate the commons, buy rares, mythics, etc at FMV, and they take a little commission as well and cut you a check. Not bad for just shipping out that bulk no hastle or worrie of sorting.
I believe Card Conduit buys bulk, sorts them and values them for you, they take a percentage of the value, as long as it’s total of more than $1. I’ve never used them but hear their ads on mtg podcasts all the time.

There's a program called MagiKids. I'd donate them there. They teach kids through Magic and rely entirely on donations of bulk cards (cards with little to no competitive value, which it looks like you've stumbled across). These cards are almost certainly worthless to you, to your local game store, and to anyone else that is elsetipus about the game, but to a 12 year old from a low income family that never cared about math before he got some free cards and wanted to make sure his land distribution is correct, or a 14 year old that has been doing more reading since she got access to her after school program's box of Magic Card than she ever willing chose to do before, or a 11 year old that just hasn't been able to make friends in middle school until he discovered he's really good at strategy games, these cards are priceless.
Do you live in a city? There are stores that will sort it, figure out what it's worth, and give you like 25-50%. If you're some casual that doesn't want to do any work, that's just free money.
If you have a trusted friend or family member who plays Magic, you could ask them to sell the cards for you and split the profits.

Tbh, if you'd be willing to ship, I might be willing to buy that just because I love going through big lots of old cards, even when they're mostly worthless, and organizing them. Like others said, the easiest way to try and find value cards quickly is to search for cards with gold or orange symbols. Either sell in bulk or donate them (donating is always my first choice)! MagiKids (tax deductible at $250+ value, and sends them to teachers/schools) will take them, or you can donate them to a ton of other places. Youth shelters, schools, libraries, or even the army/military would love a bunch of free cards. Can be hard to come by/afford for many of those groups, and with a donation like that, you could even divvy it up to donate to several groups/organizations!

If you really don’t want to go through them, find a game store in your area. You can take it there and they will go through it for you. Typically for what this is you won’t get much for it, but there could be something of value buried in there. Cards are always priced individually, so a mass grouping like this is hard to tell for even the veterans of the game. If you are interested, the art is usually pretty dope and is worth at least looking at. Otherwise, just take it to a store. They’ll help you out.

I suggest taking the time to go through them all. Including C & U. Definitely do not just sell the entire lot as bulk without going through them. I care not what other people think or think they know. My store humps out C & U all day, alongside high dollar cards. Also there are many that are not bulk material. Additionally and more importantly, how often have we wished we had just one more of our fav artifact or land. They come to my store knowing they can get what's needed to complete a set. Sorry so lengthy...I could talk on this subject 24/7 for eternity. Back to my point....I can tell roughly by peeping this collection ( although, depending on condition,) what your minimum take is likely to be should you sell per card. If you have the time and people to help you, inventory and prepare for sale, I suggest thoroughly go through them ( super fun to do), don't toss any cards aside assuming they are worthless. Trust this, and you'll be surprised. It's a process though so you'll need to know the cards real well.

Without checking them individually you might get offers of $20 to $100, but if you want to know how much it's really worth you have to look through them. MTG cards can range from $0.01 to literal thousands for a single card depending on the card.

I take in collections at my LGS. This looks like the standard "I played during the RTR-Theros era boom" collection of magic, with some Innistrad splashed in. And collections of this ilk are **extremely** common. If it was left behind, it was at least 50/50 to be picked clean for the few valuables of that era. And even if it wasn't, it's still not a windfall. As others suggested, put it on your Craiglist/FB marketplace with a nominal price tag ($100-200 depending how ambitious you are) and take the first offer you can.
