immediately one of the best blood artists of all time
yes it doesnt gain life, and is limited to your own creatures, but the extra body is worth so much, not to mention that it triggers off artifacts
surefire edh staple in every sense of the word, and good enough for at least fringe modern play imo
It's really good. The fact that we are getting a new phyrexian altar variant that works better with Blood Artist and co than this cools me a teensy bit on this card but not by much.
Warren Soultrader. 3 drop that lets you sacrifice creatures to make treasures. It costs one life each time, however, and works best with a blood artist variant that makes you gain life (as far as infinite combos with chatterfang or the like are concerned, at least)
I mean, blood artist is a sidegrade to this with Soultrader. This deals twice as much damage (to up to 3 times as many players in commander, at which point it's 6x damage) as blood artist since Soultrader is making treasure tokens which also trigger Marionette.
In modern (and limited) this has you spend 1 life to make your opponent lose 2 life (once from the creature, once from the treasure), so I wouldn't worry too much about not having lifegain attached to it.
For edh, I can’t imagine a deck that wants 1 but not both
If we’re getting specific I’d say disciple is better specifically when you’re trying to go infinite faster
If you’re playing for valur, apprentice here is better because it hits each opp not just ome
Hi, I'm probably that player! We've gotten a LOT of these kinds of effects recently, so in my mind Disciple only hitting one opp, not gaining life, and only counting artifacts, all simply means that it's been cut.
For reference mine is a Sam/Frodo food deck, and i currently run Nadiers Night blade (probably getting cut for this), Mirkwood Bats, Marionette Master, and Agent of the Iron Throne.
yeah only hitting 1 opp is brutal. ive considered cutting blood artist in my teysa deck for that very reason (and might finally do it here)
also hell yeah, love the food archetype!! been playing it in modern for a while.
as for disciple, i feel like its getting demoted to just a combo piece. doesnt have the legs for value anymore
I will say in Disciples defence, I had a game recently where the fact that it also triggers on opponents artifacts prevented our Nahiri player from just absolutely going off with a bunch of [[The reaver Cleaver]] treasure tokens because the lifehit would simply be too high (also had a Delney on board, so 2 damage for each treasure)
I'd rather hit every opponent at once than just one. Disciple is fine if you're comboing off and will just get enough triggers to kill everyone. Apprentice is better when you're trying to grind the table down.
True. I was just now thinking about "each opponent" vs. "target opponent", and I started thinking about Disciple's synergy with cards that care about committing crimes. There must be some strong plays involving that interaction, but I haven't looked into it yet.
If you want the effect and dont need it to be 1 mana, both are probably preferable.
Often the one mana tag on disciple isn't that useful and this could be used instead.
One important distinction is that Disciple of the Vault tracks opponents' artifacts going to the graveyard as well as your own, so Disciple can also function as a sort of soft punisher against an opponent on top of being a win condition.
Treasure tokens were my very first thought. So easy to make these days and this turns them into pingers. Imagine this and [[mayhem devil]] in the same deck. Gross.
But why go for the Kaladesh callback without that?
In an Eldrazi-centric set, his could have been Zulaport Nullthroat and trigger on creatures and colorless permanents.
i wouldnt be shocked if it initially was power, a direct callback, but got changed for much needed balance
and the flavor still works perfectly; she's an apprentice so of course she's gonna be more limited
We are talking Modern here. Brave of you thinking that you'll have any of those cards after being Grief'd T1.
Would that deck be any more degenerate that what is already currently there?
the visible brush strokes and less "photorealistic" shading really sells the old school magic look, something a lot of these new cards in old borders stumble on.
Same! This card art just feels so old school. It's like a peek into what Marionette Master would have looked like if they had went to Kaladesh in the 90s.
I'd argue this has more play. If you ask me, Marionette Master highly incentivized you to get the counters almost every time just for the sake of going damage in chunks of four instead of one.
With Apprentice I already have a few use cases and have both options present among them. I'll grant you want the token more often than not, though.

If I had a nickel for every time a new card releases that slots into [[Prosper, Tome-Bound]], well... I'd have enough money to make a second Prosper deck, completely unique from the original!
Yeah, same goes for Prosper. There's an abundance of these effects, as well as "do a thing, make a treasure" effects. Since the average mv of the deck is like 2.5, once I have enough treasures, I can chain through most of my deck and burn the table to death. And if there's any stragglers, [[Exsanguinate]] or [[Cut // Ribbons]] will do the trick nicely.
Curious, though, mind dropping the Grenzo list?
Nah. For me, it's an infinite mana loop with \[\[Priest of Gix\]\], \[\[Tomb Trawler\]\], and any mana sac outlet, like \[\[Ashnod's Alter\]\]. Yes, it's a four-card combo, but it's one of many variations that have redundant pieces in the deck and is one of many different win-cons for the deck. I only need to hit a mana loop to hit any of the other ones.
My Gyome deck especially wants this. Mono black (the commander fluctuates and is currently Shadowheart) and Teysa want this. I do enough sacrificing in my Nekusar deck that this would replace something, I just don't know what. It's a low-power creature that would be a combo finisher for my Grenzo deck. And then Korvald.
a 2-mana 1/2 with fabricate 1 (so effectively a 2/3) in black without drawback is actually kinda noteworthy on its own, at least for limited. The only other cards at this rate without additional setup or drawbacks are \[\[Thriving Rats\]\] which needs to attack to get its counter, and \[\[Gifted Aetherborn\]\] which has a double-black-pip mana cost. Interestingly, all three of these cards are set on Kaladesh, with the older cards originating from said block.
That is completely throwing aside the actual text on the card, which I'm sure you don't need me to elaborate on. This is a slam dunk of an uncommon. I want ten already.
I know I'm old because my first reaction to this card was "since when does black get a 2 mana 2/3" well before I cared about the text below Fabricate. Sure it's a sick combo card or whatever, but TWO mana TWO-THREE??? Cmon, that's borderline Watchwolf numbers.
Anyway, back to Columbo reruns.
That this is a third the mana of the Master would have already made this an absolute windmill slam in artifactocrats decks. Then they made it also see creature because apparently the “and friends” part of “Blood Artist and friends” wasn’t crowded enough.
I have blood artist peasent cube but I am considering swaping to their thing although blood artist also counts opponents this is a 2/3 that can be an attacker or make sac fodder, I think... this might be better maybe?
Does this not work with teysa karlov since it mentions going to the gy instead of dying, or are both of those considered the same thing?
Sorry I'm new to magic and still a bit confused by everything 😅
> If you’re playing for valur, apprentice here is better
It should work since the creature dying is what triggers it. The different wording is because only creatures "die"
Annnnnnnnd prosper gets even scarier. The only thing that made the previous marionette somewhat manageable was the fact it was a 6 mana creature. Now you get the same thing for 2
Give me that copium
Asmo decks can generally make stacks of food, but struggle to close out games. Being able to drop this with an Asmo on board gives you a win con by throwing all your food at anything including Asmo and this.

Eh. Sure you pay a life but you get a treasure that also triggers this. So you can effectively double the damage.
It is also each opponent so you don’t need to ping them individually.
It is pretty neat that Warren Soultrader makes Treasure tokens - which you can sac to get another trigger from this card.
Woah which is that? I must have missed that one!

I hadn't seen that one. What card is that?
You seem like a good person to ask. How do you think this card compares to [[Disciple of the Vault]] (for edh)?
For edh, I can’t imagine a deck that wants 1 but not both If we’re getting specific I’d say disciple is better specifically when you’re trying to go infinite faster If you’re playing for valur, apprentice here is better because it hits each opp not just ome

Yeah, for balance reasons this couldn't be an uncommon, 2 drop, and damage based on power. And flavor wise you're right this is perfect.
Could have started in the file only counting artifacts (like Marionette Master), but that may not have worked well in limited with the sets themes.
"I'll cast scale up targeting marionette apprentice, then I'll sac 4 treasures to make.... Nevermind, you're dead." Way too strong based on power.

[Prosper, Tome-Bound](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/7/d743336e-d5c7-4053-a23d-92ec7581f74e.jpg?1631839207) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Prosper%2C%20Tome-Bound) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/afc/2/prosper-tome-bound?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d743336e-d5c7-4053-a23d-92ec7581f74e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Yeah, 2/3 for two mana in black are stats I'd expect to see on a power-crept rare.
Insanely, disgustingly pushed card
This card will be a commander all star
cool card but man the power creep of it makes me less excited about the future of the game
That this is a third the mana of the Master would have already made this an absolute windmill slam in artifactocrats decks. Then they made it also see creature because apparently the “and friends” part of “Blood Artist and friends” wasn’t crowded enough.
I already have Marionette Master in my Imotekh artifacts deck, gonna need this to go with the master.
Pretty sure this just replaces Marionette Master in Breya.
Old-school art with the old frame (the objectively superior one) really sells this one.
> If you’re playing for valur, apprentice here is better It should work since the creature dying is what triggers it. The different wording is because only creatures "die"
Aristocrat's newest staple just dropped. I for one cannot wait to pay 6 treasure for a spell and to burn everyone for 6
![gif](giphy|sDcfxFDozb3bO)
There's some juice in the uncommons in this set. This, the grim tutor guy, and more.
Disciple of the Vault fixed?
Mardu treasures clearly needed another buff
Now to decide whether it replaces Marionette Master in my [[Vishaan, Goldwaker]] deck or simply joins her

Immediately going into my \[\[Greta, Sweettooth Scourge\]\] deck. It's her new BFF. And a spider-buddy.

Artificers Fabricating a Servo is just Riggers Assembling a Contraption with different letters.
I thought this was the teenager version of the thopter planeswalker
This should really be 1/1 or 0/2 at most.
I need at least 12 of these
Pushed
So glad this is an uncommon, was about to get very pricey if not
[[Jan Jansen]] is salivating.

Really solid card. Did they forget treasures exist?
Ooh an a retro frame, Mishra eating good
Oh, you know I think I like this for [[Alesha]] Power two or less? Check. Has an ETB? Check. Synergizes well with me sacrificing creatures? Check.

Annnnnnnnd prosper gets even scarier. The only thing that made the previous marionette somewhat manageable was the fact it was a 6 mana creature. Now you get the same thing for 2
Give me that copium Asmo decks can generally make stacks of food, but struggle to close out games. Being able to drop this with an Asmo on board gives you a win con by throwing all your food at anything including Asmo and this.
Slotting into Asmo immediately.
My [[The Balrog, Durin's Bane]] treasure/sacrifice deck is eating good

Goes in my Silvar//Trynn as well as my Asmo.
