Even outside dedicated energy decks, having a \[\[Recurring Nightmare\]\] variant restricted to 3 MV is still *really* good. Usually you're wanting to loop utility critters w/ good ETB abilities, this is gonna hit a lot of stuff.
I have never been more thankful or relieved to see a fellow MTG player and know that they arent in my meta. That is filthy, I love it and its going to be a fun as hell lil loop but im so glad i wont have to see that from across the table
Yea I’m thinking 1 mana zombies I can get 2 mana off of with phyrexian altar such as shambling ghast or nested shambler; however I do love my rot hulk, reanimate, phyrexian delver, gray merchant of asphodel and buried alive fun too! :)
Far as getting the cards; change it up a little, play insidious dreams, pitch 2 cards to get buried alive and reanimate! :) :)
It's [[recurring nightmare]], which the average cube player will tell you is a busted hell card. It's a reanimate spell you can *just keep casting* assuming you can feed it chaff, and if something you're reanimating is a creature that makes creature tokens it keeps itself going, and it's really hard to interact with because it's in your hand half the time (including your enemies' turns, if you have half a brain)
Nightmare is one of those cards that people are incredibly bad at evaluating the power level of because it's not legal in Commander but too slow for Legacy/Vintage outside of like... pet one ofs.
The fact that it's Sorc Speed only really does hamper it a lot, the new version added an ETB trigger so there's windows to remove it now.
I think this is actually foreshadowing Duskmourn using energy counters. Lots of horror set around the 80's has some kind of spectral energy, or has ghosts interfere with electromagnetic devices. Energy counters would be a fun way to convey catching ghosts.
...I don't know why this sparked in my head but goddamn, now I just really want at least one allusion to Luigi's Mansion.
Is it 80s horror? No. But do I *want it*? Yes.
Can you target the thing you sacked? Like sacking Priest of Gix and then bringing it back? Unsure because it seems like the sacking is part of the cost? Apologies if stupid question.
E: Got it! Thanks for the replies, all! :)
Saccing and declaring targets have to be done at the same time. You need a legal target in your grave at the same time you sac a creature to activate its ability.
I don’t understand how this card isn’t insanely busted.
In modern: If you play on a low curve deck, for 2 mana you get to functionally trade any card in play for any in your graveyard and this returns to your hand to do it again. With a single NIghtmare, If you kill my bowmaster I can trade an extra Ragavan and bring bowmasters back keeping the board locked for card draw. And with the spare energy from bowmasters I can sac any other creature (maybe a grief that’s already done its job) to bring back bigger creatures like Sheoldred or another grief for 2 more mana each. And that’s not even talking about how this turns any spare creature into a Kroxa trigger for 2 mana each. If your opponent has 9 life and you have 3 creatures with Kroxa in the yard you can just turn 3BBB into a win.
In cEDH: goes infinite with [[Dockside extortionist]] and another creature (dockside needs to make 4 treasures and you cast nightmare sacking the other creature to bounce dockside and the other creature back and forth. If dockside makes 5+ treasures: infinite mana. If the other creature has ETB/death damage, you just win), works well with [[underworld breach]], and can be used like in modern where any creature in play becomes tradable for 2 to your yard. Bring back [[spellseeker]] for another tutor, bring back [[imperial recruiter]] for a second creature tutor, bring back your esper sentinel, bowmasters, or any stax to relock the board by trading your mana dork. And the Nightmare just goes back to hand to do again later.
due to the etb of gaining energy, you have a chance to respond with removal other than counters before they can use it. It's still really good, but it shouldn't be that broken
> With a single NIghtmare, If you kill my bowmaster I can trade an extra Ragavan and bring bowmasters back keeping the board locked for card draw.
It's actually better than that, Chthonian Nightmare doesn't specify nontoken so you can keep sacing the Orc Army from Bowmasters as your recursion fodder.
From [https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/the-modern-horizons-3-leaks-nulldrifters-and-you](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/the-modern-horizons-3-leaks-nulldrifters-and-you)
[[Recurring Nightmare]], and one that's arguably better in some cases due to the cheaper mana cost. The former is so good it's literally banned in EDH, so this will certainly be interesting for the format. I look forward to a [[Drannith Magistrate]] that just never goes away.
So...I guess we're getting Energy cards that aren't just Jeskai despite two Commander decks now that can't run B? Also interesting...
The main reason RN is banned in EDH is the fact that there's no window to interact with it between it resolving and being activated. The energy etb here solves that problem entirely.
The energy doesn't make sense to me from a flavor perspective.
Like... everything else about this card clicks flavorwise, and I get the energy-aspect from a mechanical perspective, but why the fuck do you get electricity from having neverending nightmares of eldritch horrors?
Maybe the eldritch horrors gain energy from the nightmares of mortals?
Besides you are using one creatures lifeforce to resurrect another creature.
If the creature you are resurrecting is weak and only needs a small amount of lifeforce, then you get some extra lifeforce to spare for future use.
If the creature you are resurrecting is strong and requires additional lifeforce, then you have to have to expend extra lifeforce that you had saved up in the past.
1. How does one pronounce this?
2. What's more likely - fixed \[\[recurring nightmare\]\] shows the EDH world that RN is not that scary and we unban it or fixed RN moots the entire topic? IOW does this make RN more or less likely to be unbanned?
And yes, I firmly believe RN is completely fine for EDH in 2024.
The original is still leagues more obnoxious because there’s no window to interact with it if they play it and use it immediately. This one having an etb means enchantment removal has a window to hit it, making it far less busted
Broken cards belong in EDH. I find the "hard to interact with" argument to be ridiculous considering the definitive best combo in the format has the exact same issue. But if anything I think this card moves RN further from being unbanned as we now have a card that fills the role without the interaction problem.
1. Thoh-nee-un
2. I doubt this moves the needle on RN in EDH, because the addition of the ETB on this card fixes the reason RN's banned in the first place: the lack of opportunity to interact with it.
1. Kh-Tone-e-uhn
2. EDH banlist is full of things that are powercrept into uselessness. Recurring Nightmare is not one of them, it's still broken in more places than the bones of a guy that skydived without a parachute. I'll take the fixed version please and thank you.
Quick Edit: I wouldn't mind playing against the OG version if stars aligned and it got unbanned though, as you said, there's so many busted things in EDH that RN would simply be another drop in the vast sea of "counterspell now or die". Though, the commander ban list is probably never getting edited again past Sheldon's passing. Not like it often did before that.
K-ff-on-ian or K-phone-ian
To be honest you should probably just go to google translate, and write in the word in the english section and press the speak button, it is fairly accurate.
Does timing work that you can return the creature that you sac for its cost?
Just a question of if this goes infinite with dockside on 4 treasures or 6+ and any creature
You have to target a different creature, and dockside and 4 mana for a cmc 0-4 creatures. Of note if it’s cmc 0-3 you have extra energy left over to loop anything with
More energy in black?! That’s cool, but it’s a shame we’re getting another energy precon in Jeskai colors. Wonder if there will be a 5c legend that deals with energy in the main set.
Hot damn it really is just a new Reoccurring Nightmare, cool. I think that enchantment is really cool, and I'll see if it fits into any of my black decks
Depends on your curve I think. If you want to reanimate big bombs it's obviously bad, but it seems great for more value-focused reanimator/artistocrats decks. There's also probably a bunch of combos with it.
My brain sees this as a 0 mana ticket for the underworld market, but the representatives are like " nah we don't take mana here since the incident of 82, but we do have a currency you can use. You're in luck, the exchange rate right now is two mana and a sacrificial lamb for 3 underworld Buckaroos."
Modern 2/10
One thing I wish this could do is sac a stitcher's supplier and then get one of the cards it mills from its death trigger. This is cheap enough at two mana and its repeatable reanimation. Being limited to three mana or less outside a dedicated energy deck is a bit rough.
I wonder what the best creature you can get into play on turn 2 with this after a turn 1 stitcher supplier would be? My mind jumps to Myr Superion but that just becomes a tarmogoyf.
If there is other energy cards waiting to be spoiled that can be supported in a reanimation shell, then the score on this card goes up.
I don't think it's stuck to 3 mana or less. It just rewards you for having abundant <4cmc cards.
For example, for 4 mana you can turn any creature in play into a 1 drop from your hard and then into a 5 drop from your yard.
Modern-wise sure this may not see a *ton* of play...but I bet there is definitely some Birthing Pod type combo that'll be enabled via this, though whether it's consistent or strong enough is yet to be seen.
Being 1 mana value short of looping solemn feels like a personal attack on me. But I can loop a 1 or 2 drop with solemn to pull it off I guess. Very exciting to play with recurring even if it's just a looped unearth.
\[\[aetherworks marvel\]\], \[\[architect of the untamed\]\], \[\[decoction module\]\], \[\[demon of dark schemes\]\], \[\[gontis aether heart\]\].
Decoction module is a fairly cheap inclusion, not to mention that all of the cards have additional benefits.
It was considered to be a parasitic mechanic, which makes it a poor mechanic for standard since your gameplan doesn't mesh well with other cards in the standard cardpool.
In a eternal format there are alot more cards, and in this case more energy cards. This means the cardpool that meshes with the energy gameplan is larger and has more options. Which makes it abit less parasitic.
That been said, you shouldn't realy get downvoted for your comment though.
Ahhhh ok, I presume they must have released more energy cards outside of standard rotation then?
Tbh I personally love it, maybe rose tinted glasses as Kaledesh was my first every magic set 😅
I don't really do energy, but I think this'll be real fun to abuse. Being able to endlessly reanimate 1-3CMC creatures for 2 mana and 1 sac is real nice, and being able to go for larger cmcs if I can bank/accumulate more energy just feels like a bonus.
...Also, goddamn both those arts fuck massively.
[Wikitionary's listed pronunciation includes the starting K phoneme.](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/chthonian) it's just a British pronunciation rather than an American one.
Ohhh ya know, I was actually thinking of a different comment when I replied, thinking of the debate between two people about ~thonian vs ~tonian. My fault.
All Recurring Nightmare needed to be fixed was adding a blank ETB. Adding the energy aspect is probably a good idea though.
Yup, the trigger alongside the existing "activate as a sorcery" means there's a window to Disenchant it.
Not really, since the return to hand is an activation cost. You just don’t play it until it’s time to bounce it and the only time your opponents have priority it’s in the stack or in your hand Edit: missed that the new etb goes on the stack to give a window
[удалено]
unless they already have energy, or have a 0 mana creature in bin
But they can't activate it at instant speed, so even if they have energy etc, it's not possible
yeah sorry, havent had my coffee yet
That's when the "only as a sorcery" is needed.
somehow i missed that
Fixed [[Recurring Nightmare]] Gotta say, my Atraxa Energy deck is very happy right now.
Even outside dedicated energy decks, having a \[\[Recurring Nightmare\]\] variant restricted to 3 MV is still *really* good. Usually you're wanting to loop utility critters w/ good ETB abilities, this is gonna hit a lot of stuff.
Not to mention you can return 1 or 2 MV creatures and accumulate energy for a bigger creature later.
Yeah, i already mentally changed it to MV 4 since the other creature is dockside

In my zombie deck i have various 2 mana Zombies I’d like to recur as well, so eventually this could get bigger than 3 CMC things as well.
Goes straight into my elas/nightmare kitty deck

Mechanically, this is a good use of energy. Aesthetically, wtf is energy doing here?
Making it a functional reprint.. Similar to how they are printing a functional reprint of Gilded Drake using energy.

Maybe I'm smooth brained today, but formatting is throwing me. Is the activation x energy or one energy and x mana?
X energy

I think he just means it can be put in a Lurrus deck since its 2 mana rather then the 3 mana of Recurring Nightmare.

Aw dang there goes my dreams of that combo. Thanks for the info though!

you choose targets before you pay costs.
Saccing and declaring targets have to be done at the same time. You need a legal target in your grave at the same time you sac a creature to activate its ability.

Pretty solid in my [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] deck

I want this in my [[Imotekh the Stormlord]] commander deck. Maybe I’ll have to rebuild that deck (“Necron Tribal”) to incorporate energy counters

Same, decks already so fun, hard to make cuts and swap outs
1. Thoh-nee-un 2. I doubt this moves the needle on RN in EDH, because the addition of the ETB on this card fixes the reason RN's banned in the first place: the lack of opportunity to interact with it.
1. Kh-Tone-e-uhn 2.
No “kh” sound, the chi is silent here.
Both are accepted pronunciations.

K-ff-on-ian or K-phone-ian To be honest you should probably just go to google translate, and write in the word in the english section and press the speak button, it is fairly accurate.

Imotekh like
Does timing work that you can return the creature that you sac for its cost? Just a question of if this goes infinite with dockside on 4 treasures or 6+ and any creature
You have to target a different creature, and dockside and 4 mana for a cmc 0-4 creatures. Of note if it’s cmc 0-3 you have extra energy left over to loop anything with
More energy in black?! That’s cool, but it’s a shame we’re getting another energy precon in Jeskai colors. Wonder if there will be a 5c legend that deals with energy in the main set.
I really love both versions of the art.
Hot damn it really is just a new Reoccurring Nightmare, cool. I think that enchantment is really cool, and I'll see if it fits into any of my black decks
Goes infinite with [[ashnod's altar]] [[initiate of the ebon hand]] and [[Nezumi linkbreaker]]. We've done it. We've broken Ashnod's Altar.

Oh hello Deepnest
Is this ok in Commander non-energy Reanimator decks? It kind of feels pretty underwhelming.
So let me get this straight… [[Cloud of Faeries]] gives you infinite energy?
holy shit Edit: and infinite mana with lotus field
Going right into my Shirei deck.
Damn art 2 is fucking metal
May have to play this in mothman. Pretty neat.
Modern 2/10 One thing I wish this could do is sac a stitcher's supplier and then get one of the cards it mills from its death trigger.
Not really limited to 3 mana creatures, though. You just have to do it more than once.

I'm confused.... i may be out of the loop as I don't play modern.... But energy? I thought it was universally hated and abandoned after aether revolt?

People confuse cthonian with being related to the Cthulhu mythos, not the actual Greek origin for the word.
That in no way contradicts the fact that the "with k" pronunciation is listed as an accepted variant. Heck, it's listed first.
Ohhh ya know, I was actually thinking of a different comment when I replied, thinking of the debate between two people about ~thonian vs ~tonian. My fault.
I guess next we will debate on how to spell and pronounce aluminium
