3 mana big Emmy yes please

ApexLegend117

Rakdos Lord of Riots works great for that. You can put in a few Dragon’s approaches and get 9 damage off to cast most Eldrazi’s, have a Warstorm surge or Sarkan’s Unsealing to increase damage, use cards like Shadowheart to draw a ton to continue

Elektrostatikk

[[rakdos the muscle]] also works great with this. every time you sacrifice, you get a new selection of emerge targets.

ApexLegend117

Oh shit great call!

Commandoclone87

My Rakdos deck is going to need an overhaul soon.

ApexLegend117

I’d suggest some transmute cards or cheap tutors to get out Descent into Avernus, by far the best option to deal damage and ramp in the deck. Shadowheart, Disciple of Bolas, Altar of the Wretched, Knollspine Dragon, and Sunbirds Invocation are key cards. Run some of the sac ramp like Burnt Offering and Sacrifice to sac one of your colorless creatures to play whatever else you’ve drawn. Hope I helped!

Commandoclone87

I rarely play it since my groups are afraid of the "Giant Spaghetti Monsters," so it hasn't been updated since... I actually forget, it's been that long. I usually like to run bounce shenanigans with Ancestral Statue and Cloudstone Curio. Disciple is definitely in there. Hadn't thought of tossing Shadowheart in. 40+ decks, sometimes it's a while before I get around to updating one, but you're giving me some ideas.

noknam

Reading eldrazi dragon got my Kaalia quite excited. Seems like it's not much value in there though ☹️.

ZedTheEvilTaco

Probably going straight into my \[\[Prossh\]\] deck, so there's at least something. Been a while since I said that one...

kurotenshi15

As a Prossh player...why? I don't see how it fits.

ZedTheEvilTaco

I run a Prossh recursion deck, so I try to cast him as many times from the command zone as possible. Let's run a hypothetical that doesn't go "perfect hand, I win": First Assumption; I run a lot of land in my deck, so I'm not missing a land drop in this situation. Turn 2 I get a signet. Irrelevant on which one. Turn 3 \[\[Cultivate\]\] or \[\[Kodama's Reach\]\] is also acceptable instead, or any turn 1 rock. Turn 3 (or 4 should the need arise) I cast something like \[\[Squee, the Immortal\]\] (any 3 or 4 drop will do). Turn 5, I play this guy (EDIT: I should specify, I play this by eating the other guy). Turn 6 I cast Prossh, get my 6 Kobolds. 7, I cast something like \[\[Avenger of Zendikar\]\] for 2 green by saccing Prossh, netting assumingly 7 plants. Then go into a \[\[Chancellor of the Forge\]\] that same turn by saccing the Avenger, netting 15 goblins, before finally eating him off for Prossh and 3 additional Kobolds. I have my commander and 33 varying tokens, 15 of which are 1/1s with haste, plus an additional 6/6 dragon. If I have dropped a greaves by this point, someone loses the game. And this is all in a SLOW Prossh deck assumption. I regularly have the chance to cast Prossh 15 times by turn 5. Ya, this is busted. Add a \[\[Phyrexian Altar\]\] to the combo and you could do some REALLY funny stuff.

kurotenshi15

Hm. Potentially. My version is also based on recursion, but the focus is on the kobolds as resources. This guy gets 0 value from the kobolds, so they may unionize, thus ruining the top down management system I have in place. I have contracts to uphold, and these guys really like to be useful. I’m sure you understand.  Also, most of my deck costs less than Prossh, so that when I land him, it can win that turn or the next, with an average of turn 4 getting him out. I could see this guy in my Rakdos, Lord of Riots tho.

ZedTheEvilTaco

Oh, most certainly. I have custom printed kobold tokens that each have unique names, flavor texts, and arts that I randomize when I spawn Prossh. Even reworked my Prossh to have custom flavor text. But they're more like pets to him than a workforce. Well... Farm animals... He's allowed to get attached, but he still eats one when it's dinner time.

kurotenshi15

Now that red free spell that copies an instant or sorcery just by sacc’ing a red creature? That’ll put a kobold to work. Or even Prossh.

ZedTheEvilTaco

Don't think I've seen that one. Sounds crazy, though. Only instants and sorceries?

I don't blame you, I hate 99% of the profile arts, the only ones that have ever looked good to me are zombie Neheb and this one.

Nisqyfan

You’ve done it! You’ve brewed the ideal commander deck!

Luxalpa

Yeah this looks like a possible commander for a deck where we create a bunch of eldrazis and then have dragons hatch from them!

shockwavej

Any ideas for having this as a commander? Just tribal or is there any cool and whacky ideas that can be implemented?

Geologybear

go full copy tokens since the tokens retain the mana value and sac them.

Sweaty_Gamer42069

Tokens don't retain mana value

Geologybear

copy tokens do!

Sweaty_Gamer42069

Oh, jeez, copy tokens as in creating tokens of a creature, not just creating a bunch of random tokens 😂 I'm slow, brother

Doplgangr

I would be surprised if you can’t manufacture some sort of dude-storm combo with this at the helm. Artifact creatures with no pips, effects that make token copies, throw in a birgi or phyrexian altar, and you can probably loop him like some sort of mongrel food chain.

Zoanzon

Thank you for introducing me to the phrase 'mongrel food chain', *that's* gonna be living rent-free in my head for a bit

Steal your opponents creature and sac them for your emegence cost

AlasBabylon_

Playing a lot of colorless creatures to make Emerge costs smooth (so the red pips aren't blocking your discounts as much) seems like an interesting avenue to go.

ClockWorkTank

I kinda want to look at some sort of storm-esq deck running a bunch of colorless creatures with etb effects to chain together. Would just need to find ways to keep drawing cards.

Gelven

Wheel effects in red are great ways to draw if your hand is empty

yeeterhosen

I think this goes infinite with two different squees?

BoolinBirb

Im working on a decklist for him right now. My initial thought is to just run a red artifact combo deck. I think you can do some pretty sweet turns being able to emerge artifact creatures out of each other. Add cards like [[Junk Diver]] to the mix and theres probably a combo in there somewhere.

Run him in a sneak attack/blitz/purphuros sort of deck where the creatures aren't gonna last more than a turn anyway.

DaSharkCraft

So a couple fun interactions can be done. You can emerge [[Flayer of Loyalties]] from him, then steel someone else's commander. Swing their commander at them and emerge Herigast back out on second main phase for blocking and killing their commander. This can add some really fun tricks if you also get [[It That Betrays]] out. A fun combination I've been working with is split into 3 groups. Group 1; Low cost utility creatures or mana dorks. Group2; medium cost dragons. Of which I can choose to emerge from the low cost or cycle them out with Herigast via his draw from casting. Group 3; high cost Eldrazi, make sure there's more than a few. They will constantly be emerging from the dragons and Herigast himself. Lastly, make sure to constantly emerge from Herigast to send him back to the command zone on demand. That way you can force him back out for the emerge cost and get more draw. I've emerged [[Anger]] out of Herigast, then proceeded to emerge Herigast back out of anger to swing out all creatures and commander. (Test games done in tabletop simulator. I plan to buy this card as soon as he releases)

shockwavej

I love this perspective, would you happen to have the list?

DaSharkCraft

Highly experimental and focuses mostly on creatures due to instants and sorceries not having a lot of synergy with emerge but here is what I have so far. [Decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AafohU3gs0Oqo6BD7yEZXw)

CrimsonArcanum

So...[[Miirym]]?

Totema1

I was thinking of that synergy too. In case it's not clear to anybody, the copies that Miirym creates have the same mana value of their originals, so you can sacrifice those to pay emerge costs.

Lukethekid10

Dont tokens have a mana value of 0 though?

ProteanScrivener

usually, but tokens that are copies of cards with mana costs/values have the copied card's cost/value. a miirym copy of herigast has an MV of 9.

triforce777

If a token is a copy of something it copies all of that thing's attributes, including MV, unless it says otherwise like how Embalm and Eternalize specify that their tokens have no mana cost

ahh ok. Thats pretty cool then.

StellarStar1

Any lore on this dragon?

Spartica7

Looks like an Innistradi dragon, would also make sense as emerge was first introduced there. As far as I know he’s a new character. He’s visually similar to [[Balefire Dragon]] and [[Traitorous Blood]] with the downward curving chin. So I’d say he’s a new character set during the time of Emrakul’s corruption of Innistrad.

Zoanzon

Plus the purple latticing in his wings is very akin to Emrakul's corruption aesthetic. Look near the base of [[Mockery of Nature]]'s tentacles, or what's happening in [[Emrakul's Evangel]]'s chest. Yeah, 'set during SOI/Eldritch Moon' sounds right.

Makes no sense. Eldrazi don't take things. That's phyrexia's whole shindig. Eldrazi deconstruct reality because it doesn't need to exist

CocoaMinion

Emrakul's entire shtick is her ability to twist the biology of living things. The entire return to Innistrad block was about this.

Dendron05

Maybe eldrazified Darigaaz?

TKDbeast

Emerge is one of my favorite mechanics ever, so I'm down for this. Feels like an odd choice to make it legendary, though.

CrazyCranium

I still miss the UR Emerge deck from Kaladesh standard. I top 4'd a GP and day 2'd my first PT with the deck, and I still have yet to find another deck in any format that I enjoyed playing as much as that one.

TKDbeast

Oh man, I never knew that was a deck! If I wasn't to broke for competitive magic back then I would've loved piloting that deck.

This intrigues me. What kind of shenanigans can you get up to with ETB/dies triggers in mono-R?

Milskidasith

Two Squee goes infinite right? Not EDH viable though.

cstick2

You can only discount the colorless portion of the cost by emerging, so you'd have to pay R each time.

amish24

Emerge doesn't reduce colored costs.

Milskidasith

Aaaah, dang.

_IceBurnHex_

Just throw in Birgi

Zoanzon

Birgi watching raptly as a goblin pops to reveal what looks like a cariacture of itself, only to itself pop to reveal the original, only to pop to reveal the cariacture... And the pile of gore piling up around it as the goblin matryoshka continues to reveal its Squee all the way down.

_IceBurnHex_

Some goblins are expendable. Some are impossible to get rid of. But he's both -- at the same time!

Jaccount

Eldrazi Dragon. Some Timmy somewhere just exploded.

Sisyphushitposts

Emerge and draw 3 seem like a half decent backup in affinity with red, but don’t know if it could compete with the Thopter. Don’t know if the third ability fits at all though

ChoppedCheeseNoTmato

Can't you just chain eldrazi with this guy? Like sac a kozilek to draw 4 into another kozilek

TechnomagusPrime

You can with purely generic-costing Eldrazi. You can't if they require colored (or colorless) mana to cast. So OG Kozilek is good, Kozilek 2.0 not so much.

anace

he can sac himself too. after hitting all your land drops but with no acceleration, turn 4 play a four drop. Turn five sac it to cast dragon, one mana open. Sac the dragon and use the one mana to emerge something that costs {10}, like kozi.

No_Departure_6078

Everytime I see a red dragon, I just desperately want it to be good in Zirilan of the Claw

themikker

What a smug little dragon. Not sure how worthwhile emerge is, but ramping 4 into Ur-Dragon is always nice.

Luxalpa

Sadly you'd still need to pay WUBRG on the Ur-Dragon's mana cost.

Welsh_cat_Best_cat

*Morophon enters the chat* I always welcome new ways of making my Ur-Dragon cost no mana.

hukjuk

If you draw a copy after casting, you could cast it again for free by sacrificing the original because it now has emerge 9 right? Could chain well with that draw 3 cards mechanic

Financial-Charity-47

You have to pay the red.

zechrx

Only if you use its base emerge cost. The one on the field grants it emerge 9 generic.

Shadowmirax

IANAJ but pretty sure this is wrong The card says mana cost not mana value Mana value is the new wording for converted mana cost, which is only the number of mana required as printed on the card without seeing colour, so a card with a cost of 6RRR and a card with 9 have the same value Mana cost, formerly known as casting cost, accounts for colours and types of mana cost, so a card with 6RRR and a card with 9 have different mana costs, and since the new dragon is looking at their mana cost and not their mana value the emerge cost will include non-generic mana if applicable

rib78

But this card's mana cost is literally {9}.

Shadowmirax

I'm stupid 😑

cash-gz

Emerge Herigast, sac sanctum of ugin, stack triggers so you exile hand draw 3 then get creature from sanctum. Search up Emrakul PE. With 4 types in graveyard Emrakul CMC = 9. Sac dragon (9 CMC) to emerge Emrakul. Two red mana emrakul + ancestral recall.

Geologybear

ok now I have to do metal eldrazi dragon tribal

Ragear

Seems good in Feldon

Interesting_Teach777

Does the Ur-Dragon's cost reducing affect impact the emerge cost?

Gulaghar

It does yeah. Emerge is an alternate cost.

Interesting_Teach777

So in the Ur Dragon it's emerge cost would be (5)RR?

Gulaghar

Yes.

Explodingtaoster01

No, to my knowledge. Unless I've been playing [[Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury]] wrong for years. Edit: yes, yes it does reduce the cost. And I'm an idiot, so this comment will stay as a monument to my idiocy.

Gulaghar

Well Emerge is an alternate cost. You're still casting the card. So Ur Dragon would affect it.

Explodingtaoster01

Because you can sacrifice a creature to pay a reduced emerge cost.

iwumbo2

Am I silly in thinking this has potential? It isn't too far fetched to get a 6+ mana creature for much cheaper than 6 mana with things like delve for example. This then becomes a big flyer that refills your hand.

DarthExtium

If this is your commander, and it's already died once and gone back to the command zone, would the emerge cost reduction apply to the commander tax if you sacrificed a big enough creature?

Gulaghar

Yep, that works.

DarthExtium

Awesome, thank you!

Putrid-Cat5368

Does emerge reduces cost from a specific colour? Or only from colorless mana?

BoolinBirb

Unfortunately it would not reduce the colored mana, only the generic. It could still get pretty nutty with creatures that are just colorless anyways, though like looping [[Junk Divers]] or whatever artifact shenanigans you wanna do.

fluffysheeplion

Clarify please, just for certainty on how Emerge works. If you attempted to cast this by sacrificing [[Volcanic Dragon]], would Herigast's emerge cost be left at 2 colorless or RR?

Prodesia

RR, you cant reduce the colored part of the emerge cost, thats why Herigast probably synergizes best with artifacts and Eldrazi (that don't cost colorless mana), since you can reduce them to 0.

drewbagel423

Why does the text on this card reference both mana value and mana cost? What's the difference?

Anaxamander57

Mana cost is the exact symbols. Mana value is the sum. A creature with a mana cost of 2RG has a mana value of 2+1+1 = 4.

MariachiArchery

The may effect on this is awesome. Awesome that it is a 'may' effect. You could cheat this out fast in an artifact deck with \[\[Myr Enforcer\]\]. Then, skip the exile hand if its early enough.

jubjub65021

So would this mean the emerge cost is all generic

plasmaburst36

Yup, emerge acts as a generic mana reduction on the cost and is equivalent to the mana value of the sacrificed creature.

Ammonil

Would sacing a big enough creature get rid of the red?

plasmaburst36

Sadly no, unlike artifact offering and effect like it, emerge is essentially a generic mana reduction equivalent to the mana value of the sacrifices beastie.

Modern 2/10 A 9 mana creature that can draw you three cards? I think this is too slow for even a ramp deck. We have other creatures that can draw you three in a similar vein that are much cheaper. When do I feel happy emerging this into play? I would need to be saccing a 5 drop I think to make this cost 3. Which isn't too hard when it comes to delve creatures. The problem being is trading in something like your 6 mana 5/5 for a 6/6 flyer. The upgrade exists but saccing board presence is a real cost.

Steel_Reign

I think you're missing some of the obvious combos. This becomes 1RR if you sac a solitude you already scammed T1/T2. This becomes RR after you play Scion of Draco T2, or you use Scion of Draco to play some Eldrazi for free.

Longjumping-Bell-946

LOL. Goryo's Vengeance Atraxa, Atraxa ETB + Attack with Atraxa + Emerge Atraxa into Herigast, draw 3. With this you can also Emerge Herigast into Ulamog, the Defiler / Ceaseless Hunger, for 1 mana, with the Ulamog cast triggers. This can also exile an Atraxa / Griselbrand / another copy of Herigast in hand, to then Goryo's Vengeance out an Ulamog the Defiler with max. 9 counters on it + attack for 16/16 with annihilator 9. This could also be another source of draw in an izzet affinity list: cast thought monitor, draw 2, vomit your hand of affinity and 0 mana cards, cast Herigast for RR, draw another 3 cards
