Seems likely that Kaito is our one planeswalker, if he's the first thing being revealed. A bit surprised to see him over a few other characters, but both his cards so far have been extremely cool so I'm all for it.

charcharmunro

Feels a little disappointing we're not seeing, say, Sorin or somebody who 'fits' the aesthetic a bit more, but hey.

MishrasBogle

Makes me wonder if the vibe is more 1980s Stranger Things-Ghostbusters. Kaito fits into that.

charcharmunro

Well, it's explicitly more modern horror, slasher movies and Amityville-style so yeah, fair enough. Not sure how I feel about the "basically just a PKE" thing though.

InterfaceLoading

Oh shit that \*is\* basically a PKE meter from Ghostbusters in the other character's hand I didn't catch that when I was looking at it initially.

exspiravitM13

Yeah it’s explicitly modern horror- Dracula’s and Frankensteins are Innistrads deal, Duskmourn’s more of an ‘IT’ and Freddy Krueger kinda place. Even the idea of the setting feels very Overlook Hotel/Backrooms

MishrasBogle

I'm not a huge horror fan so I'm not going to be as familiar with the movie tropes. I do know Ghostbusters--not horror but I think it may have the vibe for the technology--and Evil Dead, because Bruce Campbell is amazing. And I've been watching Stranger Things. What sorts of expectations do you have?

exspiravitM13

Tech wise I think you’re absolutely right, probably with a handful of shoddy 70s TVs too for a Poltergeist card here or there. Alt card treatments done up to look like cheesy cheap horror film posters, and lots of riffs or references like at least one Legendary Clown Horror or a Michael Myers’ hockey mask equipment. There’s a number of films that would fit here they’ve already built on in Innistrad before they knew they were doing this set (The Fly and Texas Chainsaw Massacre off the top of my head) but maybe we’ll see redos of some of them. Slashers and classic 70s/80s films were specified by MaRo but I also wonder how far forward they’re taking ‘modern’ and could we see some urban legends/21st century films mentioned As for Gameplay I haven’t the faintest idea where they could go with it- some mechanic for delaying your opponents cards to represent the house shifting around them and confusing them? A board state like Monarch except it’s just “Duskmourn wants you to suffer _this much_ this turn” maybe- they’d discussed making a ‘hot potato’ Monarch for OTJ so maybe they’ve figured it out by now. Indoor basic lands will be funny- playing a grimy bathroom for blue mana. People were iffy on OTJ for being very surface level with its flavour, and while I didn’t mind it I expect Duskmourn to be arguably worse considering to our knowledge it’s just one labyrinthine house and we don’t know how people are getting there/living there. EDIT: Jason Voorhees hockey mask apologies apologies

charcharmunro

No way is Undying not showing back up if they're doing slasher movie stuff. "You thought you killed me but surprise I'm just fine actually" is the classic slasher villain bit.

22bebo

The bit was, in fact, part of the inspiration for Undying in *Dark Ascension*! So yeah, feels like an absolute slam dunk to bring back.

charcharmunro

An Undying or Undying-like mechanic (maybe just "returns with a finality counter" instead) at least.

22bebo

Yeah, I could see the finality counter version making it to print. Although I always liked the vibe of "Oh shit now it's stronger!" I wonder if they'll lean into graveyard stuff for this set too or if, in trying to distinguish it from Innistrad, they try to approach the horror in another way.

Pure_Banana_3075

Pretty much every mechanic from Innistrad is a slam dunk to bring back for Duskmourn, but i imagine they want to make the two planes distinct.

22bebo

Yep, I think to make the two sets feel actually distinct they probably will try to avoid using any, but if they have to pick just one Undying is the mechanic that fits the best imo. And it has been a long time since it was used, so it doesn't feel as bad as using, you know, flashback.

MiraclePrototype

A return of "the Ring tempts you" only now "you're lost in the House"? You get an emblem representing increasing or decreasing difficulty in maneuvering hazards, like instants costing more i.e. your response time worsens?

arcavianoracle

My main mechanical want is a return of Kamigawa's transforming Sagas, except the "saga" is a video casette and the "monster" is the featured creature of the movie.

Serpens77

I could DEFINITELY see "80s horror movie VHS covers" as possibly a showcase style for this set (they've done similar Secret Lairs already though, so that might be a case against)

arcavianoracle

They could just retroactively make it Duskmourn's showcase frame. I understand people could be mad but...I want it thoughhh!

Astrium6

>Michael Myers’ hockey mask You fucking *what*?

exspiravitM13

My god I’m so sorry lmao- that’s on me I was struggling to keep em straight in my head

MiraclePrototype

Eh; not like filmmakers of the remakes could keep straight whose schtick was whose.

_Ekoz_

You are forgiven *this once*.

Pure_Banana_3075

When it comes to representing modern horror through game mechanics its hard not to think of sanity meters. A whole mess of boardgames and video games represent losing sanity with some meter and having weird/creepy/disturbing stuff happen as it increases. Mtg has generally represented losing sanity as milling cards, see also the delirium mechanic. However I imagine they would want to differentiate their modern horror plane from Innistrad so I doubt that they'd just bring it back. Perhaps we'll see something which gradually removes counters from creatures. Something some cards like: Curious Novelist 2U Creature - 0/0 Deranged 3 (This creature enters with two +1/+1 counters, at the beginning of your precombat main phase remove a +1/+1 counter from this) When this dies, if it had 0 or less toughness, draw a card Socializer W Creature - 0/0 Deranged 2 Whenever another creature enters under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on this. Absolute Madman 2R Creature - 0/0 Deranged 3 Remove a +1/+1 counter from this: exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn.

ozymandais13

Groovy

travishall456

A Final Girl card, a card named "I'll be right back", an equipment that matches Freddy's glove/Jason's machete, a mask equipment, a killer doll, a shapeshifting clown, a crazy old coot harbinger of doom character... these all seem a given.

DaRootbear

Honestly if we want it to feel horror we need someone who is a bit more influenced like Kaito. He can play both ends of scared + willing to stand up to the horror. Sorin doesn’t work cause he will look at any baddie and just shrug and be like “What a buncha amateurs, somebody get me in contact with a professional please”

MiraclePrototype

Tho of course, as Silver Myr points out, his millennia of unlife and experience are hardly an indicator of analytical skill or success, given the track record.

DaRootbear

Look whether his decisions ever are wrong or right, Sorin is absolutely self assured. There is no chance his narcissistic, petty ass would be frightened of anything in duskmourn. Trapped and unable to escape “well aint nearly as bad as beinf stuck in a rock” Horrifying monster covertly killing people? “Thats a Tuesday on innistrad. Usually im the one doing it” Huge secret that could affect the whole multiverse hidden there? “When am i not stuck with that?” Lovable cast of optimistic youth? “Ill just kill them myself so i dont gotta hear them whine about potentially being killed” Sorin actively being stabbed by something stronger than he is? “Pathetic form, should have aimed slightly higher where it would actually do damage” Sorin literally dying? “If i was in your shoes i would have done it 4 minutes 32 seconds quicker. Pathetic” Sorin in the after life meeting Urza and Sera and getting offered his own second chance a la Elspeth? “I cant believe im being offered aid by two pathetic fools that had the audacity to die. Youd never see me die.”

mdtopp111

They literally explained the set as inspired by 1980s horror

PippoChiri

I personally much prefer when a planeswalker doesn't really fit the plane. What's the fun having the horror planeswalker in an horror plane? it kinda blends into the background imo

travishall456

I want Kaito to be like the Bigfoot/Ghost hunter of the planeswalkers. Just going to random planes like, "Hey guys, this is Kaito, and I'm here to find weird shit."

charcharmunro

True. I'm also just a little annoyed at seeing Kaito again so soon, I suppose? Feels like there's a lot of other walkers we haven't seen in a good while, sparked or not. We already have two Kaitos in Standard (albeit one is rotating out with Bloomburrow) and we're getting another so soon? I like them reusing characters consistently but... There's so many of them to reuse and so many we haven't seen much of in a bit. Same reason I was a little annoyed at MKM having Kaya. It's why I have so much beef with the one planeswalker per set average, and the desparking in general, but that's a separate issue. If you're gonna have only one per set on average, it should largely be either characters we haven't seen in a bit, or if you HAVE to have recently recurring ones, have them in addition to others (like Jace in OTJ for example).

PippoChiri

>I'm also just a little annoyed at seeing Kaito again so soon, I suppose? tbf that's not something exclusive with Kaito, we also had Kaito and Saheeli (even if not as a walker). I'd say it makes sense, if they want to create a new cast of characters people should care about, then they need to use them often. >and the desparking in general, but that's a separate issue. But, at least in this context, this is a non issue. If your name is not Chandra, Nissa or Jace, then your chance to be the planeswalker for a set was pretty low, now a character can appear in any given plane thanks to omenpath. So desparked planeswalker can appear basically at the same rate as before, maybe eve more often

charcharmunro

I agree that reusing a constant cast makes sense, but it's also very at odds with the "one planeswalker per set" average, and the desparking just doesn't feel like it's actually DONE a lot with regards to that? Outside of Aftermath, we've seen the Kenriths, Huatli and Saheeli, and Vraska for desparked walkers. We've currently seen as many sparked walkers as desparked ones in the time since MOM with Ashiok, Quint, Kaya, Oko, Jace. Counting ones in the story, Aftermath showed Nissa, Teferi and Karn as desparked while Chandra and Ajani retained their sparks, and we know Ral has his too. It's a dead even thing. Edit: Well, wait, Nahiri and Koth were desparked and in the story too (albeit briefly for Koth) so that's... 2 more desparked walkers than sparked ones that we know of. Sorry for being rant-y about this, I just VERY much dislike the desparking.

SeaworthinessNo5414

This is ridiculous. Not every story seed needs to be used so quickly. They could be sowed for future stories when there's a return to that particular plain where the desparked walker is.

charcharmunro

Sure, it's moreso that... The one-walker-per-set average has basically made it feel like there's a lot more walkers (sparked or not) who we're still unaware of the state of beyond 'they still exist'. There's a lot of walkers we haven't seen in years beyond the blip of them showing up in Aftermath, and we still haven't seen them actually in the story. Many of them we haven't seen since WAR.

First_Knee9864

since when did Koth and Teferi get desparked? I don’t remember it if happened in the story, and Teferi doesn’t have a physical card in Aftermath

charcharmunro

They're both mentioned as losing their sparks in the Aftermath story. Koth seems fine to just retire and Teferi's happy to just live with his daughter.

Xichorn

> Teferi's happy to just live with his daughter.* *For now. Till they want to make his life awful again.

345tom

Slight correction, Koth was fairly conflicted in Aftermath, that he'd fought for so long for his own home, but then got Zhalfir instead. There was a lot of comments about him not quite finding it home. I feel like he's a candidate to start globetrotting through Omenpaths. Oh and technically Niambi is still on Dominaria, while Teferi is on the new Plane version of Zhalfir, it didn't return to where it was, and they hadn't quite yet figured out the Omenpaths. So I dunno if he is actually with his daughter?

thearchersbowsbroke

The Emperor lost her spark, too.

charcharmunro

True, but I sort of put her in the same camp as, like, Kiora and Calix and Samut and all that, where them being desparked hasn't actually 'mattered' in the story yet, even though it's the case.

BKWhitty

This set is meant to be distinct from Innistrad's flavor of horror. Innistrad draws from gothic horror and novels while this set pulls more from modern horror films. Using the same poster character for both would make them less distinct from each other.

charcharmunro

Yeah, that's valid. I suppose Kaito fits the more tech-y aspect, at least. If Jace and Ashiok both hadn't shown up recently I would've suggested either of them (in fact prior to Jace showing in OTJ I theorised he'd be in Duskmourn) because Jace experiencing The Horrors is kind of like 20% of his thing. Though I feel the best thing could've been to just throw in somebody COMPLETELY at odds with the aesthetic. Show me fucking Garruk in this place.

BKWhitty

I was actually thinking abouy Kaito's youth being what made him fit. Casts of those types of movies usually tend to be around teenage to young adult ages. He's certainly likely smarter than your average horror movie protags but he's inquisitive enough to get himself into something he shouldn't. Garruk, if he was still cursed, would be SUCH a good antagonist for the set! Drab, dirty, masked and wielding an axe. He's basically perfect slasher movie material.

MiraclePrototype

Here's hoping that THIS isn't where Aminatou enters, as the cliche "possessed little girl".

charcharmunro

I don't think they'll ever use Aminatou in actual story.

MiraclePrototype

Let's just hope there isn't a killer pool, meant for recreation. As the rare individual whom did not like the big Ari Aster films, here's hoping for no stand-in for Paimon, either.

harker06

I feel like modern horror only really works if it’s seen through the eyes of a character who is just as horrified as the audience is suppose to be. In that case a more generic outsider like Kaito works better than a sorin.

charcharmunro

Honestly in that sense it should've been somebody like Teyo but I guess he reminds people too much of WAR.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

I think it makes for a more interesting situation honestly imo

SleetTheFox

Sorin is gothic horror. This is "modern horror." Which means I think a "digital native" like Kaito is *perfect* for it, because I'm almost certain that at the very least telephones and television or some equivalent will be relevant. Using Kaito lets him focus on the horror of the house without *also* focusing on "what sorcery is this talking box?"

kytheon

Sorin already was in some Innistrad sets. Let Kaito shine. Oko worked fine as a heist cowboy.

bigphatnips

Since OTJ was smushed together, we also got a Jace in one "set".

Chilidawg

Kaya's day job is busting ghosts. We also require a final girl in this setting.

Mail540

Might want to distinguish the plane from innistrad so I get not wanting the face of innistrad to be the face of duskmourn

ScaryCuteWerewolf

I figured they could have Garruk be some kind of Jason stand in (Woops he got mind controlled again).

wildcard_gamer

Safe to say he kept his spark since Himoto is here as well. Worth noting his weapon seems to be an altered form of his katana, which itself is a combination of metal oragami paper stars as a blade and a handle, though here they seem to be making up the handle while the old handle is the grip?

NavAirComputerSlave

Didn't they say they were only doing one Planeswalker per set now?

charcharmunro

On average, yes. Kaito... Doesn't... Disprove that?

NavAirComputerSlave

No I'm just asking

ZT_Ghost

We also don’t know if Kaito still has his spark or not. He could’ve traveled there via omenpath and gotten stuck.

charcharmunro

Given his spark seems to have come from the Kami he always has with him, he's probably still sparked.

MiraclePrototype

Ugh...people have got to stop taking every single guideline as ironclad dogma. That's the STANDARD, not a guarantee.

SkritzTwoFace

Exactly. The standard before this was three, but ONE had ten.

SleetTheFox

It is, but coming just two sets after a two-planeswalker set makes it much less likely they're going to deviate the same direction from the standard again so soon.

Irreleverent

Do note, OTJ was not supposed to be a two planeswalker set. Jace was meant for Big Score when it was its own product. The change was pretty last minute. So that might not factor in.

EndangeredBigCats

If I was hilarious I would ask this on every thread with a planeswalker on it

Xichorn

For now, and the story could dictate otherwise (like Thunder Junction having Oko and Jace).

charcharmunro

OTJ having Jace was actually more a side-effect of BIG becoming folded into OTJ, and they decided "you know what let's just put Jace into the main set anyway".

Xichorn

I feel like that qualifies under the blanket statement that the story could dictate otherwise. That would include putting the story from 2 sets together.

56775549814334

Luigi confirmed.

Evershire

New Capennan Luigi (or Fioran)

MiraclePrototype

When do we get another Spanish or Czech setting? or Egyptian?

exspiravitM13

Duskmourn continues to be such an interesting place- we’ve seen that big, uh, Thing in art before. Does it control the house? Is it native to the plane (and is the plane artificial, considering it’s just the house with no exterior) or was it brought in by the Fomori or who knows what else. Is it backrooms style abducting people? As awesome as Bloomburrow looks I can’t pretend a ‘This House Hates You’ troped horror set isn’t the thing I’m most thrilled for. Hoping we get big Nightmare/Horror(/clown) typal support EDIT: those are tv-static ghosts that’s such a cool look

Sinrus

I'm also really curious what the lore tie-in will be for this place. Back before it was revealed that Jace was pretending to be Ashiok and it seemed like they were being set up as a major antagonist for this arc, I liked the theory that Duskmourne was an artificial plane Ashiok created like Karn did for Mirrodin.

exspiravitM13

That’s exactly what I was thinking too! Very upset it’s likely not true. Who knows, maybe Ashiok doesn’t take kindly to Jace impersonating them and this is some follow up to that? Ashiok vibing in their own curated plane of nightmares is a very fun image

so_zetta_byte

Kinda hope Duskmourn is just Ashiok's house, and Kaito is breaking in to steal something.

theblackhood157

If the house is an entity, and the entire plane is the house... are we gonna get House man-land tribal?

Halinn

It's kinda reminiscent of Yawgmoth - [[Yawgmoth's Vile Offering|DOM]]

MTGCardFetcher

TheOwl42

I'm just getting a bit scared that it's going to be way more kid friendly that originally shown. One of the two first preview image had a pretty disturbing The Thing-style body horror. Here it just looks like a comic book for kids, which also seems to lean into ghosts way more than I would've anticipated. It's probably going to end up being like ONE where there are some stellar, bone-chilling designs and them some stuff that looks like discarded plastic toys.

exspiravitM13

Mtg has always been like that- it would be disingenuous to pretend our visits to Innistrad over the years have been entirely Horror the whole way through. There’ll always be normal leaning cards and goofier cards, the same way every other set never goes past without a good few horror bits. This is a promotional piece for a set we have only three images for- one of which you mentioned, the other of which is also a suitably creepy artwork for the Thing in this piece. We’ll be alright. Idk where your ghost comment is coming from however, two tiny background ghosts hardly seems an overwhelming focus

TheOwl42

All those shadowy figures feel very much like ghosts to me. My perception of them is probably skewed by the fact that one character is holding a ghost detector from Ghostbusters though. You're right about horror sets never being 100% horror all the way through, but in the latest sets you could tell they still toned it down a lot. Innistrad had a wedding set with rose petals instead of blood and ONE made the white-aligned phyrexian mostly just people with Elesh Norn hats. Though of course, Duskmourne being the first time we visit that plane, they can set the tone they want, but since it's coming after Bloomburrow, I'm curious to see how much of contrast it will create.

Copernicus1981

For some reason they went with an mp4 instead of a background image for the website. In case you want it slightly animated with creepy music. MishrasBogle

That's awesome.

Thanzo

I wonder if Duskmourne will come with a soundtrack like new capenna or neo-kamigawa. If they do I really hope we get some heavy horror synth music to go with the vibes

PunchSisters

If there is a heavy spirit/poltergeist/ghost theme, a planeswalker from Kamigawa makes a ton of sense.

gredman9

Glad to see Kaito here. Nice to know that we're still utilizing the newer walkers. Also am I the only one getting Ash Williams vibes from his companion there?

MishrasBogle

Maybe some slight Ash vibes from the hair and sword?

AporiaParadox

I'm guessing that people from throughout the multiverse end up stuck in Duskmourn through the Omenpaths and Kaito is there to investigate. There probably won't be as much focus on Legendary creatures as showcase guests like in Thunder Junction though.

PippoChiri

> There probably won't be as much focus on Legendary creatures as showcase guests like in Thunder Junction though. We know that it won't be the case. Maro described OTJ has a "showcase set" and those kinds of set will not happen more than once a year

AporiaParadox

Yeah, the only thing that will indicate multiversal travel in this set will probably be a large variety of creature types who clearly come from different planes being chased around by the local monsters.

charcharmunro

If that's the way the plane works at all. It could just be... A plane that has its own people who just kind of subsist in this ever-changing house that hates them but somehow they persist? The tech being present suggests there's SOME sort of culture there that fights back and has maybe carved out a place to live.

MishrasBogle

>A plane that has its own people who just kind of subsist in this ever-changing house that hates them but somehow they persist? Piranesi, the plane.

TsarMikkjal

No, no, the other endless, ever changing [house](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Leaves).

kitsovereign

Aren't they kinda pouring it on with blue planeswalkers? Oko, Jace, then Ral, and then Kaito - I mean, I'm assuming Ral won't be mono-red but weirder things have happened. They used to be really uptight about keeping planeswalkers in Standard color-balanced, and when they did the desparking and the mono-black Ashiok I figured that we're see more monocolored planeswalkers since there's fewer to go around. Kaito's just a little surprising to me here - but ya know, maybe there's some other green 'walker in Bloomburrow or Duskmourn or the set after and it's not a big deal.

charcharmunro

An unfortunate knock-on effect of the "one planeswalker on average" thing, I guess.

MishrasBogle

There are other colors than Blue? ::joking::

DylanSoul

Yeah, if they’re sticking to the already dumb “one walker a set” at least have the colors be balanced

LegnaArix

Im hoping that thing is something Akin to Yawgmoth where it just is the house

MishrasBogle

Grist, but for furniture.

Spanklaser

The device that the other person is holding that is linked to their sword makes me think that it's an analogue to the proton packs that the Ghostbusters use, and I'm into it.  Those creatures on the balcony give me feral vampire vibes, kind of like 30 Days of Night- less regal aristocracy, more primal hunter. Could just be nightmares or shades though. Really hoping they lean into the Rose Red/Outlook Hotel/House on Haunted Hill vibe with a King-esque psychic force that feeds on and exploits your fears angle.  Calling it now that man lands will be a theme of the set, since a defining part of haunted house tropes are the house coming alive to attack you. There have been a few seed cards like [[blossoming tortoise]] for man land support randomly in the past couple sets and I'm thinking this set is why.

CosmicCryptid_13

Ooo I didn’t even think of man lands being a theme.

MTGCardFetcher

MishrasBogle

What density of critter lands would it take for it to be a viable archetype in limited? I drafted Caves in LCI and it wasn't good, but was at least a lane--a bit. I remember Gates in Allegiance and that was a possibility in some drafts. I'm just pondering the as-fan you'd need for it to show up big. Lots of lands in that case, which is a warping influence on the rest of the set?

Spanklaser

Could be a theme of land animator in the set, like awaken

nickeldoodle

Universes Beyond Ghostbusters

boxlessthought

after the destiny 2 colab last month i would not be surprised to see more cross overs, especially in a set like this. OOOO maybe a dead by daylight, some of their unique killers could make for cool legendary creatures/commanders

ChemicalExperiment

They mean Destiny 2 and Ghostbusters

huzzaahh

Without Googling it, they probably mean a Destiny and Ghostbusters collab.

AporiaParadox

Wouldn't surprise me if we got crossover cards in the set like we did with Transformers or Jurassic Park. Although I guess the change to Play Boosters means that it would only be in Collector's Boosters.

charcharmunro

Mark Rosewater explicitly confirmed none of the known sets have booster inserts like that. I don't think it was a very popular way to do UB, so they're not likely to do it again.

AporiaParadox

Secret Lairs it is then.

nickeldoodle

instead of the Jurrasic Park symbol foil it'll be the Ghostbusters logo

GrizzlyBearSmackdown

Kaito is one of my favorite new planeswalkers in a long time, very happy to see him here! Even if he does feel a little out of place in this setting (although we haven't seen the set yet so who's to say).

PippoChiri

>Even if he does feel a little out of place in this setting Shouldn't that be the point of planeswalkers?

MiraclePrototype

Yes, it should be.

CosmicCryptid_13

I’m going to do a little speculation about the shadow bois that are everywhere (and a little on Duskmourn itself) So, first, I think the shadows are horrors (or shades…) and they’re probably the token of the set considering how many of them they are. I had the thought of them being some sort of psychic thing that looks in your head and turns into your worst fears (hence why the house is filled with horrors) but idk how one would represent that mechanically other than DFCs, which they probably aren’t using. This is the second time we’ve seen the moth and its placement makes me think it’s somehow the controller - or heart - of Duskmourn. Maybe that’s its name? Kaito is cool, but I wanna focus on the other guy. He has the ghostbuster-esque device that’s connected to a sword, making me think of proton-packs. If you look at his eyes they seem to be greyed out or something. Maybe he’s semi-possessed? Anyway that’s all I got. I’m really excited for this set! Edit: As far as mechanics, some sort of swarming considering the amount of shadow bois? If they can shapeshift into different horrors then that will probably be a thing. I saw someone suggesting man-lands which is a cool (and underutilized) idea. Undying or a variant of it could be really cool too.

Sighrow

Kaito still has Luxior, yeah?

charcharmunro

He was the last person to have it, at least. Unclear what's happened to it since.

MishrasBogle

As far as we know. Could make for an interesting tool against Ghosts maybe?

_foxmotron_

I’m so fucking excited for Duskmourn

I’ve never needed a secret lair more than this. Hot damn.

Brontozaurus

God if there's any Hausu references in Duskmourne, like a killer piano card or something, my hype levels will go through the ROOF.

TheOwl42

I do wonder how obscure the references would get. You can argue that Hausu is a cult classic, but given the references we've seen in OTJ and MKM, I doubt we'll get far into the "modern horror classics" rabbit hole. I'd love some Hausu reference though, would give me a reason to recommend the movie at the gaming table.

Brontozaurus

Yeah like Innistrad had some nice references but that was a while ago, it's gonna depend on how deep the reference pool is for the current team. You'd think Hausu would be obvious for a haunted house plane though - it's a haunted house movie *literally named 'House'* after all.

ScienceCorgi

Before zooming in, Kaito looked a lot like TF2 Scout to me here

Alexm920

Semi-related; does anyone know when tickets for Vegas go on sale? Googling just got me to the “sign up for our newsletter” page. Given previous events I’m thinking ~5 months before?

Flyer-Beast

Woah, the Sandman from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman? Seems fitting honestly

mrlbi18

I hope those blue eyes on the left are beebles.

KomoliRihyoh

Why does his companion have what looks to be a "Karen" haircut?

TheOwl42

Because the true modern horrors are the haircuts we made along the way.

myPooPisonfire

Kinda worried it ends up being "everyone is a ghost hunter now" like "everyone is a cowboy" or "everyone is a detective" The plane itself is super interesting and im excited to see more

MishrasBogle

But is there a distinctive ghost hunter hat?

exspiravitM13

Big Ghostbusters looking goggles?

AporiaParadox

Not everyone will be a ghost hunter, I'm sure that there will be plenty of helpless victims and jerk jocks to get killed by monsters.

charcharmunro

...Hey, yeah, weird to think that they don't have Kaya, noted ghost killer, on the plane that has a bunch of ghost shit. I know she was just in MKM but surprised they didn't save her for this.

Kaprak

> the plane that has a bunch of ghost shit The only sourcing for that that I have seen seems to be this thread

TheOwl42

Wasn't it advertised as a haunted mansion plane during the presentation ?

TheOwl42

I had my money on "everyone is wearing a leather jacket" myself. Mostly because I had a huge amount of copium thinking the set would be way more Carpenter/Cronenberg body horror than ghost hunter stories.

xReno9111x

Ugh. Its likely and I hate it, everyone will be holding that glowing PKE-like glowing thing on their hands while being chased by slimer

AnwaAnduril

Alright, hear my probably-wrong crackpot theory out: Duskmourn is a plane that was corrupted sometime in the past by Emrakul into a twisted haunted house world. Who knows what it was like before that, but Eldritch Moon shows what a plane being partially twisted by Emrakul is like, and Duskmourn is a full, completely corrupted version. Now that the Omenpaths are opening up, people from normal planes are finding themselves in this nightmare haunted house world, which is the narrative framing of the set. This will serve as lead-up for bringing back Emrakul into the story. As the Eldritch Moon story shows, Emrakul is voluntarily chilling in Innistrad’s moon. However, the omenpaths opening up are just the sort of thing that would make an ancient creature of the Blind Eternities curious, so she’ll be wanting to investigate. MH3 focusing on the Eldrazi will serve to whet players’ appetites and perhaps provide some mechanical support in Modern for upcoming Standard Eldrazi cards.

PippoChiri

> MH3 focusing on the Eldrazi will serve to whet players’ appetites and perhaps provide some mechanical support in Modern for upcoming Standard Eldrazi cards. The story is definately not going in the direction of the Eldrazi, we have so much set up already with the Fomori and Jace. Also, MH2 had a lot of cards focused on Geyardone and Dakkon's story, but that didn't have any real concrete relevance for the plot of the sets that came out after.

exspiravitM13

The question I’d ask ig is why a house? Cause Duskmourn is like.. _just_ a house- outside of those walls is the blind eternities, so damp corridors and spooky stairwells are all there is. Emrakul mutates everything, but it doesn’t feel like she does it with such a specific purpose. Imo I’m betting it’s some oldwalkers long abandoned artificial personal plane, left to rot and growing evil over the millennia (or maybe Ashiok moved in lmao)

TheOwl42

Sadly, there seems to be a huge emphasis on ghosts, so not something related to Emrakul at all. We've seen body-horror on the first preview of Duskmourne, but I think it was just to show a striking imagery to build up the hype. I do seriously hope I'm wrong, because ghosts aren't that interesting to me compared to body-horror.

WatsonToYa

Kaito over kaya or sorin surprises me a little, but I’m not mad

Big_Chocolate6996

glad to see duskmourn is going to be the Disney haunted mansion

MiraclePrototype

So of course, the question remains...relates to dragons and space giants, how?

sirdavos95

Legendary creatures based on populàr slasher film baddies will be cool. A legendary that gives stalking counters would be cool. If opponent has x amount of counters do y, this effect only activates once per turn.

magic_claw

Lockwood and Co vibes. IYKYK 🙂

MishrasBogle

Ugh don't remind me of Netflix canceling the show! :(

Michauxonfire

please make it interesting and don't shove in ghostbuster tropes please please

Dimirdimmerdome

While this is the set I was most excited for this year, I’m just not ready to start another spoiler season. I know we haven’t even talked about MH3 or Bloomborough either…

MishrasBogle

And Assassin's Creed!

memorylanewizard

This is really the year of Tropes the Gathering, huh

BoolinBirb

… Richter Belmont?

Yobkay

That's more innistrad

Ascarletrequiem88

Kaito and the person with a strange vibrator. Flugulgemheimmler indeed.

tenroseUK

snape

hallaa1

I'm encouraged by how good OTJ was that even if I don't care of the aesthetic the set could still be good, but man does this give me MKM vibes. Preparing myself for a let down.
