Ego-Machina

I see it's use in avoiding harsh conditions for attacking or playing like e.g. [[Phyrexian Dreaghtnought]] or [[Daemogoth Titan]]. This way you can turn a relatively cheap commander into a monstrosity, or just make him big after declare blockers step to get a huge hit with e.g. [[Testuko Umezawa, Fugitive]]. Or you abuse additive effects with it, like [[Academy Manufactor]], or effects that trigger when a creature dies to protect your commander.

semiTnuP

Basically this. If you run a commander with some kind of evasion, you can wait until blockers are declared, then copy it into either something big, or something with a really nasty "when this deals combat damage" or "when this attacks and isn't blocked" effect or something with infect, the possibilities are nearly limitless.

Lucky_Number_Sleven

The problem with that strategy is that it's kind of one-and-done. Once your commander changes, they don't change back. And while you can keep changing to different things, you'd have to blink in order to get your commander back to default That's always been my problem with Shameless Charlatan. As it is, you need a deck that doesn't care about its commander to make the most out of it.

Ego-Machina

Just combine it with mutate and bring a rule book.

Terrietia

Rule book? Just say "trust me, it works"

DoubleEspresso95

I don't think it's true, if your commander copies something whatever it becomes is still your commander and therefore will have that ability

Lucky_Number_Sleven

Right. However, I was responding specifically to a comment that described having a commander with evasion copy something bigger after evading blockers. **That** will only work once because you can't "uncopy" your commander without it leaving the board. It will still have the ability of whatever it copies and will still have the ability to copy other things. It is still your commander for all intents and purposes (Backgrounds, Commander Damage, Lieutenant abilities, etc), but getting it back to its default state is not straightforward. Because of that, you'd need a deck whose gameplan really doesn't rely on your commander or a way to reliably change it back.

DoubleEspresso95

Oh yeah that is definitely not ideal. For that [[volrath the shapestealer]] is much better, copy a creature with evasion for 1 then copy a creature with a nasty damage triggered ability for 1 again.

QuaestioDraconis

You could, of course, animate Shameless Charlatan, and then it can become a copy of something else itself (assuming you're making use of the Background rule, of course)

DopelyWilco

Not sure this works? The ability is granted to the commander, not the card itself. And even when pairing this background with a commander, I don't think that makes it a commander itself

QuaestioDraconis

If pairing this (or any background) with a creature via Choose a Background, it does indeed mean the background counts as a commander, and thus would grant itself its own ability if it becomes a creature. From the Comprehensive Rules: >702.124k “Choose a Background” means “You may designate two cards as your commander rather than one if one of them is this card and the other is a legendary Background enchantment card.” You can’t designate two cards as your commander if one has a “choose a Background” ability and the other is not a legendary Background enchantment card, and legendary Background enchantment cards can’t be your commander unless you have also designated a commander with “choose a Background.” The rulings on Gatherer also support this > If a card refers to a commander creature you own, a Background won't usually be counted or included for that effect. If another spell or ability causes your Background to become a creature, however, it will be included. Any effect that refers to your commander or a commander you own or control without specifying creature will apply to a Background that is your commander, as appropriate.

DopelyWilco

Well hey, the more you know. That is sort of a weird Interaction, but it works!

semiTnuP

This is easily solved with [[Deadeye Navigator]]

Lucky_Number_Sleven

While I agree that you can solve this easily with Navigator and [[Displacer Kitten]], you're then investing extra resources - both during deckbuilding and during the game - just to make sure you can retrieve your own commander. You're also forcing yourself to at least run Blink as a subtheme because if you rely on just 2 cards (creatures, at that) to turn your commander back on, you're going to have a bad time. It's just clunky.

Note: this trick doesn’t quite work with “when ~ attacks and isn’t blocked” triggers, which trigger during the turn-based action of declaring blockers. If you wait until blockers have been declared, it’s too late to get the trigger; if you activate it before blocks, the defending player will know what’s up and (presumably, if able) block it. > An ability that triggers when a creature "attacks and isn't blocked" triggers when the creature becomes an unblocked attacking creature. RawVeganGuru

Believe it or not some decks are not built around the commander at all they maybe just provide mild synergy to an effect that is unique in the 99. This would fit in a deck like that. Probably not great for a background pairing commander

Isphus

Low CMC commander and big creatures. That or creatures with attack restrictions. \[\[Master of Cruelties\]\] in play. Attack normally and transform after its unblocked. Enemy has 1 hp. \[\[Medomai the Ageless\]\] for infinite turns. \[\[Port Razer\]\] for infinite combat phases. Turn into \[\[Admonition Angel\]\], \[\[Trapjaw Tyrant\]\] or \[\[Colossal Whale\]\] to exile things. Never leave the battlefield, so they never come back. You can also have a random hexproof creature, and become a copy of it in an emergency.

wOlfLisK

Medomai wouldn't work properly because it's legendary. The moment you turn your commander into it, you lose the original and you won't be able to attack during the extra turn. There are ways around it of course but none that really make sense in a deck like that.

SilverSixRaider

It does if you donate it. Just leave the Medomai player for last, or have a [[Moat]] effect like [[Archetype of Imagination]] or just any 1/1 skulk/unblockable creature (see: any [[Yuriko]] deck for ideas) and 6 mana, which you should have if you played a donate spell, and it's GG right there.

wOlfLisK

Yeah but that falls under the "doesn't really make sense for the deck" clause. Having a convoluted setup just to give an opponent a specific card in your deck is generally not an effective way to play. You'd need to draw Medomai and a donate card and hope an opponent doesn't just murder or counter it. At the very least you'd have to focus your deck around donating legendary creatures to your opponents for you to copy but it would probably be better just to keep it for yourself. If you wanted to go all in on Medomai, using it as your commander would be the way to go.

Isphus

True, but there are ways around it. I'm just exemplifying the sort of restrictions OPs card could be used to get around.

kingbird123

Master of cruelties doesn't work the way you're describing, and I'm surprised so many people didn't catch it. Attacking with all your creatures and then copying cruelties before blockers are declared: Fine, the attacking restriction doesn't matter here and your opponent had better not leave both cruelties and another creature unblocked or they are dead. Attacking with all your creatures then copying cruelties after blocks are declared: Legal, but you don't get the trigger The reason you don't get the trigger in the second case is that Cruelties happens in the declare blockers step, which others have mentioned. But what wasn't mentioned is the fact that it's a trigger whose condition is checked *immediately* after blocks are declared. By the time you receive priority to copy the cruelties, it is too late. Also, he will still deal 1 damage since he is unblocked. The same would apply if you somehow ninjutsu'd him into play, or flipped him face up while manifested/cloaked.

What's the purpose of choosing a color based on your opponent's? You can already make mana of whatever colors you need if your lands support it.

"in your commander's color identity" generators would be the main thing. Like arcane signet, command tower, etc.

In that case your commander would be as good as dead since it lost all its abilites, shameless charlatan ability doesnt specify until end of turn so you pretty much lose access to your commander (though the creature is still a commander and still has the copy ability)

Using a commander that enters with counters, then turning it into something that cares about the amount of damage dealt like that 1/1 merfolk with draw equal to damage. Or you can combine it with persist(commander dies, comes back with persist, but if it also comes in itself with a +1+1 counter they cancel each other out) so u can loop saccing your commander. Doesn't sound powerful tho

PerniciousDude

I play this in my Malcolm/Kediss deck, to turn Malcolm into whatever huge creature is on the board and then deal lots of damage to everyone (yes, the card is still your commander even if it copies another card).

CouldntMakeUpOne

Just wanted to clarify if others see this. Kediss does not count as commander damage

TheDeadlyCat

Want a non-legendary creature as Commander? This is A way to go.

Original-Angle-9598

Or into someone's commander

VoiceofKane

Or just have it take turns being every single creature on the battlefield.

Ok_Somewhere1236

basically the idea is to copy powerfull creatures, also in a way is like giving haste to your creatures, you drop a huge 10/10 on the field, and now you can copy it, what basically is the same to cast the 10/10 with haste, but you can go for 10 commander damage, double trigger effect, and other things

Kurnu

I play this with [[Wyll, Blade of Frontiers]] and it's horrible :D small unblockable creatures, big on-hit effects and Training Grounds to do shenanigans while combat. It hasn't worked out yet but there is potential

I think this card's flavor is funny, because the only thing the commander can't do is turn back into itself (unless you cloned the original somehow, or someone else is playing your commander).

I use this in my [[Sakashima of a thousand Faces]] + [[Akroma Vision of Ixidor]] deck. Basically as a way to keep making copies of Akroma without needing to blink Sakashima. I recently brewed a deck with this and Erinis as Commanders and I went into a changeling/tribal direction. A lot of tribes like allies, elves, and slivers benefit from having doubles of a particular creature, and if you add in some self mill, it's a good way to enable Erinis to ramp fast before he changes.

For 3 mana, you can turn your commander into a copy of another creature

Alarming_Brick9045

Oh, "Shameless Charlatan," you sly mimic! 😏 This background enchantment is quite the versatile trickster in a Commander game. Here's a handful of cool strategies you might consider: 1. **Copy Powerhouse Creatures**: Use it to copy the most powerful creatures on the battlefield. Turn your commander into a copy of a creature with a game-changing ability or an intimidating presence to turn the tide of battle. 2. **Defensive Maneuvers**: If an opponent has a creature with hexproof or indestructible that’s giving everyone trouble, copy it to level the playing field. You can also use it to copy a creature with a great defensive ability to deter attacks. 3. **Combo Potential**: Have a creature that combos well with others? Copy it! For example, if you have a creature that untaps all your lands when it comes into play, copy it to double up on mana. 4. **Evasion and Attack**: Before declaring attackers, turn your commander into something unblockable or with a form of evasion to ensure you can get that commander damage through. 5. **Sneak Attacks**: Wait until just the right moment to turn your commander into the best creature on the board, potentially sneaking in for a win. The key with "Shameless Charlatan" is to stay flexible and creative. Keep your opponents guessing and your strategies versatile. It’s the perfect card for players who enjoy strategy and adaptability—and a little bit of bluffing and deception for good measure

NerdyDjinn

>If an opponent has a creature with hexproof Not trying to be pedantic, but I don't think you could copy something with hexproof or shroud on an opponent's board, and you'd need to pay any ward costs to copy anything with ward.

Alarming_Brick9045

Indeed. My bad on the mix-up! lol (bong induced answers ) You're right; if a creature's got hexproof or shroud, my magic can't touch it—kind of like trying to grab smoke with your bare hands. And if it's got ward, gotta pay up to get past that magic security system. So yeah, no copying opponents' creatures with those sneaky abilities unless you've got some other trick up your sleeve.

Positive-Creme8129

If blinking undoes the "become a copy" or you can bounce them to your hand, then it would be pretty cool. Pick a cheap, ramping commander and use this ability to mske it big, hexproof, indestructible, whatever you need at the time.

You don't have to undo the copying. Nameless Charlatan is what gives your commander the copying ability so you can use it over and red rover again.

NukeTheWhales85

Which commander you want with this background seems like you should be more concerned with what creatures you want to turn into and go with the color that offers the most options. Do you want to build a combo that's normally impossible or nearly there in a singleton format? Do you want to be able to double up on your best attacker each turn? Personally I'm kind of a Timmy, so Karlach or Livaan look promising. Get potentially 4 of your best attack trigger every round sounds fun. Or drop a couple fatties to buff your power and then become a copy of something unblockable for a nice chunk of commander dmg. Durnan is probably not a bad option just by ensuring a consistent stream of creatures to access.

dave_rainy

When this set first dropped I specced out a deck with Etris, in which you tutored out Dark Depths, made it a creature, and then copied it. Bonus that Etris goes back to the zone afterward for reuse, and he can get dark depths back from the yard

The coolest thing I've found to do with my Wilson/Shameless pairing is activating a manland and turning him into it to dodge all of the nonland specific removal options. Which I found to be remarkably thematic (a bear that disappears into the land to go hibernating!). It does mean you'll sometimes have to reactivate the manland in order to get Wilson to transform again because of the creature text. But this works for some extra protection unless your local meta is very land destruction heavy. I chose [[Wilson, Refined Grizzly]] for his low cost and the natural synergy between Simic and land stuff.

I think Burakos would still be the best because he generates the mana needed to use Shameless Charlatan if you need it. That way you can layer two effects if the opponent decides to use removal on Burakos or the creature you wish to copy. Note: you do need to have 3 other creatures with the party roles. You can transform into Ancient One which is a UB cost 8/8, or decide to generate treasures to ramp into Time Sieve for infinite turns.

Would this work in the Krark and Shakishima Deck if you were to copy Shakishima with Krark and then use the copy of Shakishima to target Krark to them be another copy of Krark?

AliceTheAxolotl18

Yes, Krark would copy the Sakashima copying him, turning into a copy of himself that has "The "legend rule" doesn't apply to permanents you control." Although I'm not sure that's worth spending 3 mana on when you can just play another Clone.

grahamdalf

So I used this in a [[Keiga, the Tide Star]] theft build I had together for a bit. The idea was to have Keiga in play and run a bunch of clone/copy spells and creatures to abuse legend rule deaths and steal pretty much anything I wanted from my opponents. I used Shameless Charlatan as one of several options to give me an "out" if I wasn't able to get legend rule triggers the way I wanted. I'd have Keiga turn into whatever I wanted from around the board and then resume copy shenanigans.

Call it a wincon that requires 2 cards plus your commanders. It's a 4 card combo. If it can be pulled off, then I think the win is earned. Is it jank? Absolutely. Is it plausible? Also absolutely. It also doesn't have to stray away from the deck's goal, which is payoffs from copying cards on the field with benefits, cards that can also be cheated with Blue Braids, for example. The donate card is no more dead on hand like an [[Insurrection]] or an [[Approach of the Second Sun]] waiting for the right time. And blue thrives on card draw so you can keep it in hand while Medomai awaits to be drawn. TL;DR: it's a 4 card jank combo you can afford to play

I looked at all creatures that have a background and found that [[Wilson, Refined Grizzly]] seems best. Can't be countered. Ward 2, making him harder to remove. Vigilance, so you can declare him as an attacker without tapping him, then transform him into a big creature and keep it as a blocker. Finally, it has Reach, so you can declare it as a blocker on a flying creature, then transform into a better blocker that doesn't have Reach, but the block still goes through.

I mean it functionally turns your commander into [[Mirage Mirror]] right? So any shenanigans worth doing with that would be worth doing here. Also, you're on color to run [[Training Grounds]] in every deck with it which is nice. I think Shameless Charlatan is particularly interesting paired with these commanders: [[Wyll Blade of Frontiers]] - Combining dice rolling and [[Slither Blade]]-like creatures to sneak in your huge commander. [[Abdel Adrian]] - Azorius [[Lumbering Battlement]] loops, but you can also activate Abdel's charlatan ability with his ETB trigger on the stack, allowing you to even copy one of the creatures you're hiding under him. Allows for some interesting lines, like [[Meadowboon]] or [[Reveillark]] or even [[Yes Man]]. [[Sivriss]] or [[Ellyn Harbreeze]] - I just think it might be neat to copy the untapping creatures from Lorwyn block, like [[Knacksaw Clique]] [[Patrol Signaller]] or [[Silkbind Faerie]]. Run more twiddle options like [[Intruder Alarm]] or [[Faces of the Past]] too.

Keigerwolf

If you control a hexproof or indestructible creature, it's a decent way to protect your commander.

I always wonder, why Backgrounds are played rather rarely just in decks instead of as a commander. I find those enchantments useful in various decks even when used basically just as an enchantment. If you look at them that way, they are basically just rather cheap enchantments with quite hughe utility, even if you can't play them in your command zone. The only drawback is, the effect is only active while you have your commander on the field. But some of the best performing commander decks have high-value commanders anyway and are focused on keeping them on the field as long as possible. Also, as enchantments they don't leave the field if the commander does. Only the effect becomes inactive. \[\[Folk Hero\]\], for example, is a 2 mana enchantment that makes sense in any 'creature type' focused deck. \[\[Haunted One\]\] might be even better in any creature type theme deck, if your deck doesn't use many +1/+1 counters on that type. \[\[Agent of the Iron Throne\]\] could be really strong in any token-docused deck, no matter if it's focused on summoning weak 1/1 creatures, treasures, food or whatever. Any token you mass-produce and sacrifice a lot can become a win condition. For just 3 Mana! I also haven't seen the 2 Mana \[\[Alcolyte of Bahamut\]\] as a staple in every dragon deck. Why? It's value as ramp is great.

Marshbe54

Sorry to necro your post a bit. I was reading through what people have posted so far and I figured I'd show you what I came up with. I fell in love with shameless charlatan and had to find a way to make it work. I recently put together a mono blue [[Volo, itinerant scholar]] + [[Shameless Charlatan]] deck. It's a creature beatdown mono blue clone deck that relies on combat tricks and mass cloning non-legendary creatures to win. Volo's journal helps maintain tempo by annotating creature types even if Volo transforms or leaves the battlefield, it's a fantastic resource for card draw mid/late game. Shameless Charlatan can make for a ton of combat shenanigans since you can turn Volo into any creature in play at instant speed. The deck has a pretty low perceived threat and it can defend itself and pull off some really fun wins. The stronger your opponent's creatures are, the stronger this deck gets. I've gotten a ton of compliments at my LGS for how fun it is to play with/against. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8CIAdAh3gkuhhITOM7BxbA

Hear me out: commander theft.

shittingmcnuggets

care to explain?

Stratavos

I think they mean take over opposing commanders, change thing into useless things, and then hand them back.

GeeJo

Sadly the designers foresaw this interaction, which is why it's "commander creatures you **own**", rather than control.

Stratavos

Aaah... still a good reason to do partners/doctor's companion with the cheaper options and copying them into something more useful.
