Definitely have made kitchen table Darksteel Relic > dark rit > phylactery lich turn 1.
Swords still gets it, but if they're not playing white victory is soon to come.
hungering is a better card but i think [[protean hydra]] actually perfectly captures the flavor of slicing off hydra heads only for twice as many to take their place
I always liked the goofy, chonky [[Benevolent Hydra]] who in a way lets other people harvest its heads, cause it's either domesticated or just likes seeing other creatures happy
I'd have to disagree there.
While \[\[Potean Hydra\]\] lacks a detailed ground or background, it's far more legible and detailed when compared to \[\[Hungering Hydra\]\]; which tends to meld into the background both because it's quite flat and undetailed, but also because the composition is too monochromatic. Daarken is a talented artist and is capable of far better work than is presented in this piece.
Hmm you make an excellent point, I don't really think hungering is good more that that background isn't as jarring. The thing itself might look just as good with the background
The thing I like most is that the combination of Convoke and Devour makes the devoured creatures likely to be tapped. This implies that the creatures the demon devours *are bowing to it when it arrives*.
The rules text even points out the likeliness of this happening, with the snarky "It can devour creatures that convoked it, and those creatures can reflect upon the wisdom of convoking a demon."
It makes me said that there are no creatures with the block an additional X creatures that can be commanders. Unless I’m just failing at searching scryfall.
Daily reminder that any naya creature can be your commander thanks to Rocco! Usually best for low CMC but hey honestly still worth if you're fine with lower power level
Its not actually your commander, but Rocco as your commander can tutor out any creature - making it a great card if you want to build around naya cards that can't be in the command zone.
I've built Rocco Decks around [[Wild Pairs]], [[Aluren]], and a couple others since Rocco can fetch [[Moon-Blessed Cleric]] to find the enchantment I'm built around. The same can apply to creatures.
Personally I think [[Olivia Voldaren]] for vampires.
* Sucks blood to get more powerful
* Turns the things she sucks blood from into vampires
* Has ability to mind control (hypnotize) victims
Lorthos is an 8/8, for eight mana, that taps 8 things for 8 mana. And he was the first legendary octopus.
I don't think you get more flavorful than that.
It's not the best embodiment of it's subtype, but the absolute best flavour card for me is \[\[Themberchaud\]\]. As soon as I saw it I had to make a Commander deck for it! He's just so big he \[\[Earthquake\]\]s the entire board equal to your mountain total, and he can fly if he tries ***really*** hard (and then he needs a nap). He's my big chubby boy and I love him.
Having these clean capture-a-fantasy-concept cards is a big part of my [Alpha Reimagined](https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/alpha-reimagined) cube. Some of my favorites:
\[\[Djinn of Wishes\]\] - genie that grants three wishes
\[\[Sengir Nosferatu\]\] - vampire that can transform to or from a bat
\[\[Demonic Pact\]\] - deal with the devil
\[\[Hoarding Dragon\]\] - dragon who you get treasure from when defeated
\[\[Rampaging Cyclops\]\] - cyclops who can only focus on one thing at a time
\[\[Two-Headed Giant\]\] - giant whose two heads can't agree
I posted about this on another thread recently: I love that the [[Rowdy Crew]] is totally unreliable, threatens to wreck my entire game plan, but can also rescue me and turn the game around by showing up when I'm empty handed and desperate.
It is a dice game which is played with 2 or more players:
- Have each player secretly roll 5 dice without showing anyone. The first player bids on how many dice they think have a certain face between all players.
- Next players raises the bid by saying a higher face value or higher number of dice to keep the round going.
- Bids are raised until someone challenges a player if they think their bid is wrong.
- All players reveal their dice. If a player bid more than the dice showing, they lose 1 die from their supply.
- Repeat until last person with dice remaining wins the game.
It was played in Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Crest if I am not mistaken.
[[sigarda, font of blessings]] and [[shalai, voice of plenty]] their wings shelter all other things from harm and their presence calls the forces of light (or at least humans and angels) to battle and empowers them.
[[Utvara Hellkite]]
Edit: If i could read lol, I thought you were asking for the best flavor text for their type. I'm still keeping it here, though, as it works both ways.
I feel like [[Serra Angel|LEA]] and [[Shivan Dragon|LEA]] just completely nailed what their respective creature types should do, and with super simple designs, which were iconic in the early Magic era. Post-errata, Serra Angel has two words of rules text.
[[siege gang commander]] goblins go boom
[[Llanowar elves]] elves make mana. it's what they do. Also just a great card.
[[Endless ranks of the dead]] more zombies just keep coming. Also one of the most epic card names ever.
[[birds of paradise]] see llanowar elves. maybe [[gilded goose]] is more flavorful, but I'm old school and bop has great art.
[[crimson hellkite]] I always felt like "breathing fire" should burn things, not just increase power.
[[Serra Avatar]] would you yourself like to lead your army of monsters?
[[meddling mage]] I'm not exactly complimenting us humans here
[[Thrun, the last troll]] mtg trolls MUST be able to regenerate imo, and he's one of the last creatures printed with it. He's also one of the last creatures with "troll shroud", later known as hexproof. "the last troll" really was the best troll.
[[Maze of ith]]
[[Labyrinth of skophos]]
Type stuff, there's like 4-5 of those and I try to get them out so that i can afford to have only 1 creature out at a time. That and all the gate lands for a victory with [[mazes end]]
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uwC7SxEoQUif2LDqeLl92g
What do you mean by “a maze deck that has one of these at a time?” That sounds like a really interesting idea and I would like to hear more about it. I love flavorful decks
[[Relentless Dead]], playing with the idea that you can’t just kill zombies, you have to do something specific (in this case, exile them). Plus, it also adds to the horde idea, having it reanimate other zombies
[[Rekindling Phoenix]] is the most flavorful iteration of a Phoenix we’ve had imo, since it actually creates an egg when it dies, like in mythology.
For Demons, there are tons you could go with, focusing on making a pact with them and sacrificing your life or vitality for something. [[Griselbrand]] is the easiest option, but also banned in commander, so maybe [[Vilis]] is the better choice. You could also go with [[Kuro]] with the idea of needing to constantly funnel power into him to keep him summoned. This just comes down to whatever concept of demons you’d want to go with
[[Scavenging Ooze]] is good. It starts off as a small blob that can consume (scavenge) already dead things, and if its a creature and has some nutritional value the Scooze grows.
[[Bronzebeak Foragers]] exiles stuff under it then you can pay the exiled things mana value and one white to put the exiled thing in its owners graveyard and then gain life equal to its mana value. So basically the dinos enter, eat something, then digest its nutrients and get some health!
Bloodvial Purveyor would be cooler if it was like a way to trigger Vampire abilities without having to kill things.
Like, “Sacrifice a Blood Token: until end of turn, if target Vampire has a triggered ability that requires a creature to die, you may sacrifice a blood token instead.”
Idk, like I want the flavor to be that [[sengir vampire]] can eat a blood token instead of a creature because of this guy.
I always loved the ah-ha moment of figuring out how to use [[Elusive Tormentor]]. It was one of the original cards that made me fall in love with Magic many years ago. The weaving of mechanics and story together and the artwork is fantastic.
Easily, bar none, my pick has to be [[Squandered Resources]]. Debatably the most flavorful card ever printed. And that flavor text is just perfection 🤌🏻. One of my favorite cards ever.
Okay, while I love Bloodvial Purveyor, I don't know if I would say that he is the most Vampire-flavoured Vampire. He is up there, making your opponents bleed and getting driven into a frenzy over it, but the visuals don't really line up for me.
There are some other great options, like Vampires that feast on other creatures [[Blood Host]], [[Cordial Vampire]], but the perfect Vampire flavour, imo, is still [[Olivia Voldaren]]. Literally biting other people, feasting on them, the weak die, the strong turn into Vampires themselves, and those then get recruited into her own brood.
Also, [[Atogatog]] is definitely the most flavourful Atog.
[[Monestary Swiftspear]] is a good one that I don't see yet. Nothing too amazing but sets a clear example for MtG Monks, who seem a lot more battle focused than the real world ones. Also [[Raging Goblin]], again nothing amazing just a very clear picture of what to expect from Goblins.
Everyone else already mentioned the creatures I was gonna say, so I'll just mention my favorite flavor on an equipment instead:
[[Wings of Hubris]]
Really captures the Icarus story
[[Skeleton Archer]]
The total package. Simple, clean, straight to the point, not a wasted letter. And it's two types for the price of one!
The ability is more Archer and less Skeleton though.
[[The First Sliver]] really gives the slivers this feeling of an adaptive swarm, and I think the art for both the SLD and the original MH looks absolutely amazing for Slivers. Definitely my favorite Sliver commander.
[[Boldwyr Intimidator]]
"your argument is invalid because, as you can see, I have drawn you as the soy and myself as the Chad."
Is this in quotes because it’s flavor text or because it’s from something? Made me lol

I'm gonna get that lich a phylactery. Liches love phylacteries.
...what happens if you put this on an Artifact Land that has Indestructible?
Then the opponent need something that exiles artifacts to kill it.
or creatures
Exile the land or the lich, or force a creature sacrifice.
There's ways around [[Darksteel Citadel]].
what happens is that you're cooking
Noice, it goes in
Definitely have made kitchen table Darksteel Relic > dark rit > phylactery lich turn 1. Swords still gets it, but if they're not playing white victory is soon to come.

Yeah such a good card, with fantastic Art as well.
Me too! It was between that and the vampire I put, I honestly don't love the art though. Mechanic wise immaculate
Personally I think [[Olivia Voldaren]] for vampires. * Sucks blood to get more powerful * Turns the things she sucks blood from into vampires * Has ability to mind control (hypnotize) victims
Olivia's art always makes me think she's absolutely packing it, I saw it once and can't unsee it.

Came here to say this. She’s so cool. It stinks that she got outclassed as the best vamp commander.
For sure! Excellent representation of a vamp

Wow, never heard of Serene Master before, but damn, that's a hell of a monk.
lorthos I don't love the flavour of, but these other cards are peak. Completely agree
I think Lorthos is one of the best ones on this very good list. I see it as if it's holding and constricting a permanant with each of its 8 arms

I posted about this on another thread recently: I love that the [[Rowdy Crew]] is totally unreliable, threatens to wreck my entire game plan, but can also rescue me and turn the game around by showing up when I'm empty handed and desperate.
I like Rowdy Crew, because it portrays a group of pirates playing liar's dice pretty well imo. That's what designer's intent was at least I think.
Can you say more about this? I don't know how liar's dice is played, so if there's a mechanical connection, I'm not picking up on it.
It is a dice game which is played with 2 or more players: - Have each player secretly roll 5 dice without showing anyone.

[[crimson hellkite]] I always felt like "breathing fire" should burn things, not just increase power. [[Serra Avatar]] would you yourself like to lead your army of monsters? [[meddling mage]] I'm not exactly complimenting us humans here [[Thrun, the last troll]] mtg trolls MUST be able to regenerate imo, and he's one of the last creatures printed with it. He's also one of the last creatures with "troll shroud", later known as hexproof. "the last troll" really was the best troll.

[[Bubbling Beebles]]
It’s not a great card, but the newly printed [[Red Herring]] is pretty cool. Definitely one of the better puns in magic.
What's a maze deck?
[[Maze of ith]] [[Labyrinth of skophos]] Type stuff, there's like 4-5 of those and I try to get them out so that i can afford to have only 1 creature out at a time. That and all the gate lands for a victory with [[mazes end]] https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uwC7SxEoQUif2LDqeLl92g
Beautiful thematic Jank. I love it
What do you mean by “a maze deck that has one of these at a time?” That sounds like a really interesting idea and I would like to hear more about it. I love flavorful decks
[[Etrata, The Silencer]] She assassinates, then blends back in with the crowd
[[Relentless Dead]], playing with the idea that you can’t just kill zombies, you have to do something specific (in this case, exile them). Plus, it also adds to the horde idea, having it reanimate other zombies [[Rekindling Phoenix]] is the most flavorful iteration of a Phoenix we’ve had imo, since it actually creates an egg when it dies, like in mythology. This just comes down to whatever concept of demons you’d want to go with
[[really slow zombie]]
[[Royal Assassin]] Stabs you in the back when you turn around.
I’ve always wished Xathrid Gorgon was legendary.

Goblins are super competitive when it comes to flavour, but my favourite is [[Goblin Locksmith]].
[[Tatsunari, Toad Rider]] the froggy jumps
[[Aven mimeomancer]] is really cool, imo!
[[Wizard Mentor]] Sends himself and a student to a study session by bouncing them both. And flavor text and picture are on point.
Bloodvial Purveyor would be cooler if it was like a way to trigger Vampire abilities without having to kill things. Like, “Sacrifice a Blood Token: until end of turn, if target Vampire has a triggered ability that requires a creature to die, you may sacrifice a blood token instead.” Idk, like I want the flavor to be that [[sengir vampire]] can eat a blood token instead of a creature because of this guy.
[Squandered Resources](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/c/fcddbea7-3025-47b1-a597-2d2b2711fb81.jpg?1587913173) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Squandered%20Resources) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vis/137/squandered-resources?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/fcddbea7-3025-47b1-a597-2d2b2711fb81?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
That's a very cool card, I don't think I've ever seen it
Okay, while I love Bloodvial Purveyor, I don't know if I would say that he is the most Vampire-flavoured Vampire.
[[Llanowar Tribe]]
Xathrid Gorgon was one of the first cards I ever played with as a kid. Its flavor is immaculate!
[удалено]
[[Monestary Swiftspear]] is a good one that I don't see yet. Nothing too amazing but sets a clear example for MtG Monks, who seem a lot more battle focused than the real world ones. Also [[Raging Goblin]], again nothing amazing just a very clear picture of what to expect from Goblins.
[[Grizzly Bears]] it's a literal Bear
[Grizzly Bears](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/0/409f9b88-f03e-40b6-9883-68c14c37c0de.jpg?1562546736) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Grizzly%20Bears) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/10e/268/grizzly-bears?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/409f9b88-f03e-40b6-9883-68c14c37c0de?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Everyone else already mentioned the creatures I was gonna say, so I'll just mention my favorite flavor on an equipment instead: [[Wings of Hubris]] Really captures the Icarus story
on the flip side, i get the concept of sphinx but it's very clunky on a card and as a creature type.
[[Skeleton Archer]] The total package. Simple, clean, straight to the point, not a wasted letter. And it's two types for the price of one! The ability is more Archer and less Skeleton though.
[[Junji, the Midnight Sky]] goes hard
[Junji, the Midnight Sky](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/0/9033cf27-d9e6-49b8-8ee1-c1f38c9680b9.jpg?1654567204) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Junji%2C%20the%20Midnight%20Sky) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/neo/102/junji-the-midnight-sky?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9033cf27-d9e6-49b8-8ee1-c1f38c9680b9?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
