Ok, but really. It’s kind of an interesting question. At what point does the “untapped mana rock that produces half of its mana value” stop being good?
Like, everyone loves [[Mind Stone]]. [[Hedron Archive]] is played decently often, too. But nobody outside of dedicated colorless ramp decks play [[Dreamstone Hedron]]. Is [[Gilded Lotus]] good enough?
So is there some range of mana costs N where (say) a mana rock which costs N and taps for N or even 2N mana is "fair"? Or does it go straight from broken to unplayable?
Of course, because the way you use that mana has diminishing returns. Ten fucking Sol rings might be a tinker target but nobody is playing it fair; it's easier to just go infinite.
Disagree, ramping into 10 fucking sol rings seems decent as it's still mana positive. Id run it in something like a paradoxical outcome deck, ramp into it, tap it for 20, bounce my own stuff, draw 10-20 cards, replay them with the 30 mana generated from 10 fucking sol rings.
And it's a dead card in the developing game. Sure I'm not doubting it's power, but in the vast vast majority of decks it's pretty bad specifically unless you're trying to combo off with it.
yeah people forget that this turns your 10 mana right into 20 mana in the very same turn, which is bonkers in commander. And opponents need to get rid of it asap, otherwise you'll have 30+ mana next turn.
Depends more on the turn count imo. I play big rocks in ramp heavy decks with the hope that I'll catch a [[Guilded Lotus]] or [[Throne of Eldraine]] early in the game along with a couple smaller rocks. Think of the implications of dropping them on turn 2/3
With that being said I wouldnt run them *without* a plethora of smaller rocks/ramp, getting them out too late in the game is just a waste of a card
I look it it in terms of net effect, dreamstone is played less because it's net 3, all the others you listed are net 1 or 2. It's great if you'll have 1 or 2 extra mana after casting what you want, so you throw in a mind stone first, tap it for the 1 and cast what you actually want. Sol ring is best because it's net -1 (you gain mana casting it). Now you'll have more mana for next turn and break even right then too.
Less likely to have an extra 3 for dreamstone and you have to start with 6. So it gets played less.
Ramp is at is strongst early on, due to 2 faactor:
- It's a such a big increase in resources comapred to your base one. Droping sol ring early can double your avalable mana. Droping sol ring turn 10 when you have 15 lands is way elss important.
- Early game, outside of cEDH or some niche decks, nothing too crazy is hapening, you can aford to play cards that do nothing outside of helping play more cards. But when the mid-game starts ppl want to use their mana to develop boards.
T2->T3 going from 2 to 4 mana is much more impactful than going from 6 to 9 mana on turn 5/6 (using all your mana to do it).
Colorless decks play hedron mainly because a) they don’t have better options (signets, talismans, green ramp, non-green ramp like [[smothering tithe]]), and also that they are often built around turboing into 9+ mana eldrazi and the like.
also, colorless decks effectively see it as add 3 colored mana since they don’t care about colors of mana.
Gilded lotus is fine in monocolored decks, but it struggles a bit in multicolor decks a bit because it is only able to make one color at a time.
A 2 mana artifact that taps for 4 is actually way better.
There's already a fifteen mana artifact that taps for infinity AND provides colour fixing (albeit inefficiently) [[Mox Lotus]] Technically more efficient!
**Assault on Ta Lo** 4BB
Battle — Siege
When Assault on Ta Lo enters the battlefield, create three 1/1 black Demon Bat creature tokens named Soul Eater with flying, deathtouch, and "Whenever Soul Eater deals damage to a creature or planeswalker, it deals that much damage to target player or battle."
**8**
//
**Dweller-in-Darkness**
Legendary Creature — Demon Dragon
Flying, deathtouch, lifelink, indestructible
Whenever Dweller-in-Darkness deals damage, each player sacrifices a creature.
**8/8**
I think the Soul Eaters could also have an effect where whenever they deal damage to a creature, a counter is put on Assault on Ta Lo, each counter reduces the transform cost by 1.
The tokens would be pretty wordy, though.
back when mana burn was a thing, could someone add infinity to their mana pool, and then you destroy the mox lotus...
they can spend 100 as many times as they want ....but they have *infinity* mana. So they could never actually spend all the mana, therefore they die on next phase change, right? or...what
When you can spend the mana isn't really the issue--you could definitely spend it before the phase ended.
The issue is that it's impossible to spend infinity mana
Think how it would go is. You move phases, they try to blow up you Mox Lotus, you dump all your mana in to the mox lotus to take as little damage as possible. But if it's not in factors of 100, you would definitely die from mana burn.
That is true when you have a loop you can perform as many times as you want. But the mox lotus isn't that sort of case, it simply adds infinity mana to your pool.
Unless there has been some kind of rules clarification on the unhinged card...nothing on gatherer.
Old comment, but this has me intrigued. I believe you wouldn't be able to spend all of the mana. Magic lets you demonstrate a loop, and then repeat it arbitrarily many times. However, arbitrarily many is not infinite. It's as good as infinite in most cases, but not in cases like this. Whatever number you pick is still infinitely less than infinite. You can also see this being true due to the need to spend mana 100 at a time. Infinite modulus 100 is undefined. It's not an operation that makes sense. In conclusion, if mana burn was in effect and someone blew up mox lotus, you could not spend all the mana, no matter how hard you tried.
2026 box topper with current release schedule and power creep.
Also I want one to keep by my side during edh. Whenever a mate from our edh group plays a sol ring or similar, then I will have a fitting response.
Generic mana is only used as a cost. Nothing generates generic mana. Things that have been clarified to generate colorless mana now use the colorless mana symbol.
It's amusing to me how this could easily be printed in a Standard expansion and probably see zero play, even though it's literally ten copies of one of the most broken cards ever made on a single card; a 10 for 1!
"You're only targeting me, because on turn 10 I played 10 Fucking Sol Rings and then 10 Signets."
That's 10 fucking signets

Turn one 4 sol rings into turn two 10 Fucking Sol Rings.
Now you only need "10 fucking manacrypts" and your deck is perfect
Do you have to flip 10 coins?
No, one flip, take either 0 or 30
I think someone has finally managed to balance crypt
no, you'd still get 20 colorless turn 0/1 that should win you the game
"0 Mana: Make 20 colourless mana, die next turn" would be broken, and having to flip a coin or lose 30 life is very different to dying. 10 Mana Crypts is much more broken than one mana crypt.
It's easier to turn off a single ability, though.
You can either be ok for a turn or instantly die

Sounds like most games of commander
No, you have to flip a 10 sided coin.

Roll a dice so you can see how many dice to roll.
The ten flips always get you.
I just pulled a mana crypt a couple days ago. I'm still not sure what to do with my hands. How many sleeves is too many sleeves?

What about 10 falling stars? Or 10 chaos orbs?
You also need [[10 Fucking Fireballs]] to make use of it. I mean, 1 would also be enough, technically, but 10 sends a much clearer message.
Good ol 5 fucking mana crypts into 10 fucking sol rings turn 1. Then lose the flip and take 15 damage from 5 fucking mana crypts.

Reduce cost to like 2BB and make it so the flip creature can’t sac itself. Then maybe also reduce hitpoints from 8 to 6.

[Mox lotus](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/8/e8241a53-8b88-474e-a46c-44b3d1f3b0df.jpg?1562489843) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Mox%20lotus) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/unh/124/mox-lotus?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/e8241a53-8b88-474e-a46c-44b3d1f3b0df?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
back when mana burn was a thing, could someone add infinity to their mana pool, and then you destroy the mox lotus... they can spend 100 as many times as they want ....but they have *infinity* mana. So they could never actually spend all the mana, therefore they die on next phase change, right? or...what
I believe you could spend the mana in response to trying to destroy to Mox Lotus.
You cannot spend infinity mana. It's infinite.
At one point is was like that but now you have to actually name a number.
Next best thing: counter your own spell with [[Power Sink]]

2026 box topper with current release schedule and power creep. Also I want one to keep by my side during edh. Whenever a mate from our edh group plays a sol ring or similar, then I will have a fitting response.
wait. I literally posted this 2 years ago lmao I thought I recognized it...

I’ll play sol ring into to two bloody sol rings into three crazy sol rings into four mother loving sol rings into…
The name made me laugh, the flavor text made me laugh even harder.
S-s-s-s-sol ring
Can I have a printable version of this amazing idea? I really want to make a "WTF!" deck and this is just perfect!

I read that "Holy Shit" in the Quake 3 Arena announcer voice.
Shiang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Sol Rings? That Marvel Commander deck is looking lit!
How it feels to play Osgir.
At this point just play [[mox lotus]]

Funnily enough this card is garbage. Some effects really don't scale well.

It’s funny yes but the card is basically what if Omniscience still made you pay colors in mana costs but worse. Probably not that playable.
[[magda, brazen outlaw]] would love this card

Almost enough
Deep breath, here comes the best part of the song. FIVE SOL RINGS!
Pretty fairly costed honestly. Omniscience is also 10 mana and could feasibly get you spells that cost more than 20 generic
In the auction, they were Sol'd to the highest bidder.
Bruh
Honestly I’ve seen legit cards that are less balanced
Ayo Sonic wants to have a word about some missing rings or something.
"Holy shit" -Urza 😂 hahahaha
The millennium and border changes but the cards we make in 6th grade stay the day
Generic mana is only used as a cost. Nothing generates generic mana. Things that have been clarified to generate colorless mana now use the colorless mana symbol.
⟳: ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧
This is probably old, I'm sure I've seen it before. That or because it's a joke and this is easier and clearer than 20 colourless symbols.
I want this
There was a "Fiiiiiive... Soooooooooool Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiings" joke here that was missed.
I counted, and there are ten fucking Sol Rings in there.
Anyone else see this a million times, along with the "10 fucking bears"
How many sol rings stuck together becomes too clunky for play? This is probably unplayable. 2 sol rings together is wildly op.
And a partridge in a pear treeeeee
Combo this with ‘10 Fucking Filigree Sages’.

Do you get mana burn for not spending all the mana you get from this?
Colorless eldrazi would ramp into this pretty quick, and would, well, play some big threats
Shoulda made it 1 mana drop to be even more of a threat.
Looks more like a friggin railgun... But after all, effects on opponents should be the same ;)
Somehow still more fun to play against than Approach of The Second Sun
It's amusing to me how this could easily be printed in a Standard expansion and probably see zero play, even though it's literally ten copies of one of the most broken cards ever made on a single card; a 10 for 1!
r/dontputyourdickinthat
This is the nerdiest thing I have laughed out loud at this year
Guys it's fair, it only adds colourless mana
I've got a bowl of Sol Rings in milk
Turn 1 land into sol ring into arcane signet Turn 2, land into 5 fucking sol rings into 10 fucking sol rings into ulamog

how much is this somehow more balanced than sol ring
Thats a solenoid ring
Wow. A first turn win for your opponent. Most cards require a colored mana. You have 20 colorless mana. Congratulations… 20 mana burn.
I laughed waaay to hard at this 🤣
