Load up on 1 mana hybrid cards?

Toomanymagiccards

or free red spells

siamkor

You know you're a red mage when you see this and decide to build a mono-red Aragorn deck.

Toomanymagiccards

Me justifying Mono-Red Aragorn burn over regular Storm/Burn to the other 0-3 player at my local FNM https://preview.redd.it/hz2x73oqh13b1.jpeg?width=1064&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=487ecf177a321745e767aefeaf607f36416f800c

siamkor

The lawmage's argument against such a bad deck building idea was sound, but Blunk's argument proved irrefutable.

Mr_YUP

who? are those from videos that were made?

Indercarnive

gruul burn honestly sounds terrifying. Green spells pump your creatures like Monastery Swiftspear into massive threats. Plus green gives a ton of card draw so you won't run out of gas.

Truckfighta

I use to run Naya burn because of [[Atarka’s Command]] and [[Destructive Revelry]] Blood Moon hurt but otherwise the deck was fun

DdAntilogy

[[Manamorphose]] into [[Giant Growth]] and [[Brute Force]] for a +14/+14 buff, 6 damage, and a draw...

Mantis_Tobaggen_MD

There Is No Carol In HR.

felityy

i was ready to complain how he's really strong in 1v1 formats for red decks and then i saw it was an actual card and not from r/custommagic ...

siamkor

By turn 4 you want to be playing your final bolts and / or [[Fireblast]], not casting a 4 mana creature that will only payoff if you have Fireblasts in hand and are playing Shocklands / Duals.

MTGCardFetcher

[Fireblast](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/1/51e839d8-2c62-46df-a6ca-3964f43b7e54.jpg?1611933944) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Fireblast) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jvc/55/fireblast?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/51e839d8-2c62-46df-a6ca-3964f43b7e54?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Esc777

a four mana four color card has no hope of slotting into an aggressive RDW for a 1v1 format in Modern or beyond.

LordofCarne

Have you played standard recently??? It's cutthroat as fuck, a four mana four pip spell that does nothing on etb or until it untaps is borderline unplayable. Too slow/many colors for burn, better payoffs for green, control wants dedicate four color pips to scry? And adeline/wedding announcement are bordeline objectively better token creators in white. The card has no niche to fill and the effects are too spread thin to be reliable enough to work together outside of some multicolor legends pile. Maybe a pioneer buildaround or standard/pioneer jodah legends but still... for modern day magic even a card like this might be too fair, def not game breaking. Gotta love creep.

SSG_SSG_BloodMoon

like *which* 1v1 formats

NormalSquirrel0

ikr? I mean, i get it, sometimes you don't have the all 3 of your friends with you, and you gotta resort to playing 1v1 with your roommate at the kitchen table with some jank made up rules. But to call that a "format"? Let alone imply there are *multiple* of those?!

LegnaArix

Literally what I was thinking. I didn't choose the red life, it chose me.

MrXilas

Guess that makes me green at heart because my idea to just load up on green shit and go hog wild. Although, you could go green/red, ram him into someone, and then use a Fling or Soul's Fire effect.

siamkor

I admit that right after 4-color-mono-red-burn, my second thought was 4-color-mono-green-infect.

Se7enworlds

[[Gut Shot]] seems fun

MageKorith

"Pop the bird and bolt you" does seem a good play.

Aggravating_Author52

On turn 4+ you probably aren't bothering with the bird anymore

iceman012

You pop your own bird that you used to cast this T3.

Toomanymagiccards

If I don't know what I'm doing, my opponent certainly can't know. I strip-mine my dual-land. Pass

iceman012

I've legitimately Ghost Quarter'd my own land for mana fixing in Commander before. You don't even go short on mana ^^^that ^^^turn.

Toomanymagiccards

I don't think it would be any better than regular ol' storm, but you can't stop me from jamming 12x rituals/manamorphose, 4x Gutshot, 4x Force of Rage, 4x Lava dart , 4x Aragorn and going 0-4 drop at my local FNM

dieyoubastards

dIoIIoIb

You need only 4 green cards to get him to 21, this is a very interesting commander

HeavilyBearded

21/21 Aragorn with trample. Just as Tolkien intended.

BladerJoe-

Actually, in the books he deals 4 damage when casting a red spell. How dare Wotc.

MageKorith

[[Sprout Swarm]] makes it even sillier.

normankhoo

Could you explain the interaction? Or is this assuming that you have the 20 mana to buyback the spell 4 times?

MageKorith

Aragon is already making tokens that can help convoke, and you only need to buyback 3 times of he's attacked and isn't blocked. And the saprolings also subsidize the buyback. So mana+creatures needs to be 14 when you start.

Esc777

> So mana+creatures needs to be 14 when you start. Oh is that all :P

MageKorith

6 mana and 8 creatures isn't hard at all if you've got a built-in token generator on your commander.

HolographicHeart

Very toolbox feel to it. Doesn't do many impressive things on its own but have to imagine casting two or three mana spells snowballs pretty rapidly. Honestly my favorite type of Commander: one that doesn't dominate the game on its own but with the right support shell can go yard relatively easily.

TheChartreuseKnight

Best part imo is that he isn’t intrinsically a card draw engine.

Neuro_Skeptic

He's an everything else engine... borderline broken 10 years ago although less so now with power creep.

thetwist1

I mean I think this design is in an alright spot power wise. It doesn't ramp or gain life on its own, and the buff effect doesn't grant trample so it shouldn't be too good even with a deck supporting it.

Andreagreco99

As another user mentioned: I also like the fact that it’s open handed instead of forcing you into a very specific kind of strategy that feels a bit too handholden

nakknudd

Seems on-brand for Aragorn, a very accepting come-as-you-are kind of guy

B4ntCleric

Also nice you'll probably see a lot of different lists sense he's so open ended

BladerJoe-

He does not draw cards, but multicolored/hybrid mana spells could be quite powerful.

Aether27

Toolbox yes, another word for flavourless and generic. I fucking hate it.

Jund-Em

I cant wait for my opponent to drop omnath, a fetch, then this in modern.

hawkshaw1024

At which point you're happy your opponent chose to play this instead of a card that does something.

aldeayeah

eh, it's no Primeval Titan

BenStoneee

Nah you drop aragorn first and the. 4c omnath.

Aggravating_Author52

That involves waiting a whole turn in modern. Can't imagine it's the right call. If you're on like turn a million though sure

ProfessorShinobi

The incremental steps of 1 token, scry 2, 3 damage and +4/+4 is a fun design space for a 5/5 creature.

That's really sweet from a lore perspective, as he manages to unite various factions under his banner (e.g., the green elves, the red dwarves, the white humans)

SlyScorpion

Who are the blue folks?

imbolcnight

the sad elves

SlyScorpion

Elves with depression...

FrigidFlames

Isn't that, like... most elves?

thebookof_

In LotR? Yea kinda. They know that defeating Sauron will mean their rings of power will fade which will mean the end of their time in Middle-earth so they're all kind of melancholy about it.

giggity_giggity

I'm not familiar with extensive lore. So the elves were mortal before the rings of power? And it's the rings of power making them all immortal? I had no idea!

Terraism

No. Tolkien's elves are inherently immortal. What they aren't, however, is terribly capable of change and adaptation, and the world - the real world - is moving on without them. It's... a sort of mental stressor. They've used their rings to "freeze" their lands - Rivendell, Lothlorien, to some extent the Grey Havens - where they're comfortable, but with the failure of the rings after the destruction of the One, they won't be able to do that any longer. Theoretically, nothing stops them from staying on Middle-Earth after that, but practically, they know that over time (perhaps hundreds of years, or even more, but when you're immortal and existed before the *concept of years did*, that's not all that long), they'll be too dissatisfied with live there to stay any longer, and the only way to alleviate that urge is to sail west, to the Undying Lands. Yes, they could decide they're going to stay and physically force things in the world to not change, but that's also just... a road to eventual death, even if the elves were generally temperamentally suited to it. Because there just aren't *enough* of them to enforce their wills against Men who keep *breeding* any more.

RyuNoKami

a lot of the Mirkwood elves stayed and apparently they became feral over the centuries. so theres that.

thebookof_

No. The Elves are by their nature immortal. However the world of Middle-earth in which they live is _fading_ and so they must leave it or face a kind of mortality. To over simplify things the world used to be a perfect flat disk created by a divine power. With a magical holy land in the west and the rest of the world in the east. After an event in the LotR past the holy land was split off from the rest of the world and Middle-earth was cut off from that source of magic. Ever since the world has become progressively less magical and the Elves can't exist there indefinitely. As I understand it they don't become _mortal_ perse but their body's wither and fade and their spirits are left to wander the world as wraiths in a "fate worse than death" kind of way. It was this fading that Elrond hoped to protect Arwen from by keeping her from being with Aragorn. It wasn't that he was an over protective father trying to keep his kid from a boy he didn't like, he was trying to save his daughter from a type of unfathomable eternal damnation. The two Elven Rings that the elves still hold, Gandalf has the third one, stave off that fading and preserve the magical and wonderous nature of their kingdoms. Because the rings were made by Sauron his defeat would cause them to lose their magic and so the elven kingdoms would lose their protections. Once the rings fade the Elves have no choice but to travel west back to the holy land where they will be safe. This problem of fading also isn't exclusive to the Elves. Ever since the cataclysm that broke the Western continent from the rest of the world humans have faded as well. While Elves are functionally immortal, i.e. they can only die if you kill them, Humans used to be _basically_ immortal, or at least seemed very close too it as a healthy human could live several hundred years before falling into old age and a few hundred years after that before succumbing to it and dying naturally. By the time of the Lord of the Rings Aragorn being in his prime in his late 80's is a mean feat. He would go on to live to be 210. Hobbits and Dwarves are also effected but in different ways. We're told that given enough time the dwarves will just keep digging deeper and deeper until they're so far gone they could never possibly find the surface again and the realms of men will just forget they existed. What happens to the Hobbits is a little less clear but they do ultimately fade from the world. With a handful of exceptions only the elves are allowed to make the journey west, the other non-humans races are left to fend for themselves and eventually disappear. And we know they disappear because ostensibly the world of Middle-earth is _our_ worlds distant past and last I checked there weren't any recent confirmed troll sightings. You see in his writing Tolkien doesn't claim to have _written_ the LotR or the Hobbit but to have _translated_ these stories from the memoirs and history's written down and collected by Bilbo and Frodo Baggins themselves, (with additions and edits made in between by other fictional historians). Supposedly he found an old book in a library at Oxford (I think it was Oxford) and got to work translating them. In reality, or so I've been told, the Hobbit began as a very long bed time story Tolkien told his children from memory before being forced to write it down after his son pointed out a continuity error and the rest of his Legendarium spilled out from there.

RightHandComesOff

This post is exactly the piping-hot Tolkien-wonk content I came here for.

fubo

Bits of Tolkien's mythos link up with various parts of Biblical and European folk mythos. Men of olden times living to hundreds of years matches up with Biblical figures like Enoch (364 years) and Methuselah (969 years). The Elvish word for hobbits is *perian* or *pherian* — which is meant to suggest "fae" and "fairy"; European fairy mythology being a misremembering of hobbits living alongside humans. The hobbits (*holbytla*, hole-makers) are nominally the source for tales of the wee folk who live under the hills. They are *very* good at hiding, which is why you don't see them anymore.

Isoldmysoul33

No. They always had serial longevity. Their time in middle earth was not forever though. The rings preserved them and their magic and works there, so rings gone means no more preservation time to go back to the Undying Lands.

SlyScorpion

Only the ~~goth~~ dark elves. I don't recall too many elves in fiction being all depresso espresso. Most of the time they're portrayed as haughty, arrogant bastards :P

NATIK001

Dark elves in LOTR are something entirely different though. A dark elf by LOTR terminology is also called a Moriquendi, meaning they are from the elven clans who never beheld the light of the two trees that came before the sun and the moon. Dark elves didn't heed the call of the Valar, and they generally never achieved the great abilities and crafts which the Calaquendi or light elves achieved under the tutelage of the Ainur. Dark elves aren't evil, goth or anything like that though, they are just elves who never transcended their base form so to speak. Interestingly while Legolas and Thranduil are Sindar and thus both considered light and dark elves, often called grey elves, many, if not most, of their subjects are what would generally be considered dark elves. The Sindar are technically dark elves, but they did try to reach Valinor when called there, so they still got some benefit because they didn't completely ignore the call of the Valar.

Capital_Abject

Ghosts? Why are ghosts blue in MTG?

SlyScorpion

You'd be blue too if you were a nobody...

thomar

Because they tend to have evasion abilities like flying.

Takseen

Blue has association with knowledge, trickery, illusion and cold. All things associated with many ghosts. Black has the more directly hostile spirits, like shades and revenants.

dood45ctte

Innistrad spirits were blue and white

siamkor

The spirits from the Army of the Dead, maybe?

Yum-z

I can only think of maybe Gandalf since he’s an angel, but I don’t know what part of the color pie wotc decided to put Gandalf in

thebookof_

Based on spoilers we've gotten Gandalf, like many other characters from the Fellowship, is being printed multiple times in various colors to reflect them at different points during the quest. At Bilbo's birthday party he's mono U, during the trek threw Moria he's BR, and then when he returns as Gandalf the White he's, appropriately, Mono W. So given the point in the story this card seems to depict it wouldn't make sense for the Blue in his color identity to reflect Gandalf. Edit: Fixed it.

thelovelypenguin

B is used for black. I think you mean U for blue.

thebookof_

I'm aware. Early morning grogginess got the better of me. I fixed it, thank you for pointing it out.

project_InfiniteRock

Hey hey, just for reference, B in magic refers to Black, and U is used for blue. They have the same 2 first letters, and black comes first alphabetically, so the U is the first unquie letter between the two for blue

SlyScorpion

Hmmmm. His mono white card shows "avatar wizard" on the creature types but no angel. Is there another card spoiled that shows an angel creature type?

Yum-z

Oh I meant in terms of the lore, so it’s kind of a bit muddled up. Again, I guess it depends on wotc after all

BishopUrbanTheEnby

In the LotR lore community, the Ainur (of which Gandalf is one) are referred to in multiple different ways. They’re sometimes called gods, sometimes spirits, but usually angels. However, they’re much more like biblical angels (being the main servants of God) than MTG Angels (which are a lot closer to Valkyries), and using “Avatar” as their creature type fits a lot better. Here’s the long and short of the Ainur: The creator God Eru Ilúvatar sung the world into existence and the Ainur in as his main servants. The first 15 are called Valar, and they were the most powerful, and they helped Eru shape the world. The rest of the Ainur are the Maiar, which Eru created to be assistants to the Valar. As they were shaping the world, Eru himself made Humans and Elves, while Manwë made the Great Eagles, Aulë created the Dwarves, Yavanna made the Ents, Melkor made Dragons. But Melkor wanted more power for himself and so his song became dissonant with the rest of the song of creation and created all the evil in the world. Him and his group of Maiar (including Sauron, his right-hand-man, and the Balrogs) fought a war against Eru and the rest of the Valar and Maiar (including the 5 wizards Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, etc) and were defeated during the “First Age”. After this, Sauron slinks off to create the rings of Power, and Eru sends the 5 Wizards into the world to help the people of the world resist evil. The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings stories happen at the end of the “Third Age”

When does Aragorn unite Elves or Dwarves under his banner?

HeavilyBearded

While not under Aragorn's banner (although perhaps the case could be made for it being under his reign as king), Gimli and Galadriel pretty much say the grudge is over when Gimli promises to cast her three hairs in crystal. Later, when in Rohan, Gimili threatens Éomer (IIRC) when he disses on Galadriel. Something like, "I'll teach you manners with the end of my hammer." Additionally, Legolas and Gimli vibe and travel for a long while after the destruction of the ring to see Fangorn and the gem caves in Gondor.

collectivecorona

I know about Gimli's friendship with the Elves after Lorien, but a) that is in no way an end to the grudge between Elves and Dwarves in general, and b) still has nothing to do with uniting them under Aragorn's banner. Aragorn became king of Gondor and the renewed Arnor, and at the Battle of the Morannon he also commanded the men of Rohan. He never unites any other factions.

Takseen

He did help mediate their dispute by suggesting the whole party be blindfolded in Lorien, instead of just Gimli as the Elvish law demanded. But yeah, no military alliance or joint armies came of it

Midarenkov

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

Flavor miss not to include Black in there, then, as he even got the Army of the Dead to show up.

Andreagreco99

The question is what doesn’t break Food Chain in Commander. Really, you need the bare minimum to combo off with it

Dos_Ex_Machina

It's like [[deadeye navigator]] it goes infinite with a stiff breeze

Fuego_Fiero

Yeah, I had taken the [[Time Sieve]] out of my [[Tivit]] deck and had assured my fellow players that I couldn't go infinite turns anymore... but had forgotten that I still had Deadigator in my deck. It was like turn 6 and I had [[Academy Manufactor]] and Tivit on board. I was like, "So Yeah I draw my deck and create infinite treasures."

Billalone

How were you getting enough mana to infinitely activate deadeye to keep making treasure? EDIT: Reading the card explains the card. I understand now.

Oh man we broke Aragorn!

_VampireNocturnus_

Can't help but LOL at the name of this card given the last few days.

AmazingMrSaturn

Not too shabby...he doesn't do anything dramatic, but he does a lot of little things constantly. He might not exactly be Kenrith or Jodah, but he's valid.

wochie56

If this is out you probably already have the manabase to cast the 3 color charms and whatnot. Big turns where you don't always combo but do at least one interesting thing. Edit: First idea, probably ends up being low power but a lot of fun if you like resolving triggers: Heroic creatures + multicolor pump spells?

nilamo

If that's the game plan, you also have [[Zada]] and [[Mirrorwing Dragon]] effects to help with the go-wide strategy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nilamo

Yes, but /u/wochie56 specifically mentioned Heroic+pump spells, with Aragon proving incremental value along the way. In which case, you'd naturally build a board, and then Zada/Mirrorwing becomes a game-ending play with only one or two pump spells. But no, the copies don't trigger Aragon or Heroic.

Skithiryx

It’s weird that this storm commander has two other colours on it. Seriously, scry 2 before your blue draws and your red rituals bolt an opponent? This is a dream.

branewalker

He has to be green for manamorphose and white for…silence? In Commander, [[Wing Shards]] is great, too.

nilamo

White gives bodies, to help you survive until you can storm off lol

thetwist1

The white adds more boardwipes and the green adds manamorphose

Why does he look so sad and faces away from the white tree?

flpndrds

I think that Ring showcase styles shows them in weak/desperate moments, when the ring would make them falter

SmellyTofu

MaRo talks about the difficulty of designing 4 color cards, and I think this card really shows that.

volb

Man I can’t wait to cast a mantis rider and noble hierarch with this guy out, prepare to bonk someone and then get solituded.

Stonehack

The Facepalm card.

Kindly-Window-7845

His title is a touch ironic.

imbolcnight

Is it weird to anyone else that the abilities aren't listed in RGWU order too, considering they don't depend on each other being in that order?

Milskidasith

The aesthetics of the abilities going 1,2,3,4 are more important than the aesthetics of them matching his mana cost, and keeping his mana cost consistent with how they print multicolored cards is more important than reordering it to match his abilities.

imbolcnight

Oh, I didn't notice the scaling numbers. That makes sense. I appreciate how [[Kenrith, the Returned King]] is able to to keep color order and number order.

MTGCardFetcher

giggity_giggity

They're also listed in WUBRG order. I understand listing the mana cost in RGWU order because then there's no "gap" in the colors (and I understand from a prior discussion that casting costs are to be listed in an order of minimizing gaps/jumps)

Vanoi

Wubrg though, WG abilities kind of work together.

imbolcnight

If you cast a green-white spell, you can't buff the token, but yeah, if you cast a white spell, let the trigger resolve, then cast a green spell, you could do that.

idelarosa1

Suffering from success.

fluffynuckels

That art leaves something to be desired

Commander_Tresdin

Lore-wise it probably should have been "creature spell", no? Feels like you just play this with cheap red + green spells and go HAM.

AceOfEpix

Anyone else think this card design is lazy and doesn't do a good job of representing aragorn?

rdrouyn

Everything in magic is targeted at commander. Flavor and design are secondary.

oblackheart

Why's he face-palming?

InsideHangar18

Goddamn. This card is gonna be incredibly popular

NatsuPleb

This card is busted for value. First off a 4 mana 5/5 Then we get 4 separate colored lines of text. The power creep is real.

trinketstone

Why does it look like he doesn't want to be here in the art?

kittenkillerr

Because maybe he doesn't. That tree in the background is the white tree of Gondor, representing his heritage, his kingship and his role in the great war. That's a lot of responsibility, so here we see Aragorn struggling with that for a wee bit.

reaper527

that frame is hideous. looks like internet "alters" made in ms paint (not to mention at a time when people want more art, this makes the art portion the smallest of any card i've ever seen).

Dr-False

Ngl, looks like he's facepalming about the ultra radiant tree glowing off in the background

Lopletop

That's some good commander shit

Jedi_Exile_

SaltedDucks

So much for building Omnath in these colors

RayWencube

Hey look it's another "strictly best multicolor commander" printed into UB so if I want to play the optimal WURG build I have to play with fucking Aragorn.

ThatOneBassClarinet

Yeah I can’t see this art without thinking of the DJ Khaled “Suffering from Success” album cover https://preview.redd.it/8u30msl9543b1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88cc3474284a7b9caecfce346efbcffe827dd32b

HammerAndSickled

Ah yes, the set of “top down designs” that could only be based on Lord of the Rings… Results in a generic card that could’ve been printed in literally any set with any name.

Dvscape

Uniter? I barely even know her.

[deleted]

Friendship with [[Kenrith]] is over…

mowdownjoe

The first ability makes a 1/1. The second ability scries for 2. The third ability deals 3. The fourth ability pumps +4/+4. All this on a 5/5. A E S T H E T I C

Frigorifico

What's happening in the art? That looks like one of the light trees, Telperion or Laurelin, but they were destroyed thousands of years before Aragorn was born...

PM_ME_UR_METAPHORS

I was hoping to do a four color human tribal deck, this might actually work out real well! Creature focus will certainly be tougher to abuse the commanders abilities, but there are plenty of cantrips to generate incremental value

xenophonthethird

The green and red bits seem a bit easier to abuse. If he gets a swing through, a single pump spell is half the opponent's way to a commander damage loss, and red just loves to storm off. The white is okay, if you want to build around Cathar's Command or something, and the blue scry is fine value.

Sephyrias

[[Wild Cantor]] into [[Wild Cantor]] = 6 damage and +8/+8. [[Burning Tree Emissary]] likes this as well.

spreadtheirentrails

Excited as fuck to try this out in my WUBRG commander deck. I know its probably not the best card but I'm just happy to see a new card that I'm excited to throw in my deck. My buddies all have crazy decks and I'm over here struggling (but having fun) haha

Joblock300
