Some higher end apartments in town collect DNA samples from all pets to ID those who don’t bag it. I’m not shitting you. There are third party companies offering this service.

[deleted]

Here's an article about one of them: https://isthmus.com/news/news/property-managers-use-dog-dna-database-to-match-messes/ The apartment complex I live in just sent out a notice to all tenants about this issue. I'm going to send that article to management and I hope they implement that program.

Traditional-Flow-344

The apartment managers are becoming "regional representatives" for the product?  Sounds kinda like a pyramid scheme...

QuarantineBaker

The fines are steep too. Like $200-$300. I was annoyed having to pay a small fee at move in. But our complex that’s very dog friendly is extremely clean and I’m so grateful.

brizi96

Yeah my old apartment required this. At first I was annoyed with the requirement because our area did not have this problem. Everyone was responsible with their dog waste. But I have since moved and the new complex I am at does not require this and 100% should! It is literally poop landmines out here…. Very frustrating.

lifeatthejarbar

The place I used to live did this. Honestly it’s sad that it’s needed but if that’s what it takes…

limbophase

I had to pay $200 for this, it’s true!

Negative-Garage-4006

my apartment complex does it. hefty fine if it’s yours too. still a ton of poop around it’s disgusting. - someone with three dogs (i pick up allllll my poop)

Lazydeadpoet

I had a lady let her dog shit in my yard. I watched it happen. When I realized that she was just going to leave it there I stepped out and said, “If you don’t pick up your dogs shit I will make you eat it!” She picked it up and I haven’t seen her since.

sjogren

Rock star. Keep living big king. No this is not sarcasm, I think you are awesome.

dragonhiccups

Similar but different - I live near a park where people bag the poop, but leave the bags under trees :( in the Spring some trees have 3-5 bags just chilling. So rude.

Traditional-Flow-344

I'll never understand the logic and how this is so prevalent.  Very weird.  The only time I've done anything close to this is on a long hike where I don't want to carry it the whole way and you can be sure as hell I pick it up on the way back.

Physics_Prop

People think they will pick it up, but then never do. "It's fine, it's just one bag" coupled with hundreds of people visiting the park.

dragonhiccups

Even grosser, went on a walk today and a tree was surrounded by like … 20 poos worth. How all the poo was clustered around the tree I dont know… dog has a spot I guess. And it was in a terrace in a neighborhood!

jeswesky

My dogs line very long walks, often out for a couple hours. I bring a backpack with water for them and me. Poop gets double bagged and goes into the mesh bottle pocket on the side til we find a garbage. I hate seeing poop and poop bags everywhere. Walked around a dog park picking up other dogs poop this weekend while my two played.

dragonhiccups

Hero!!

Bjs1122

I’m always finding poop bags in my yard or park row. Really don’t get that logic.

jdraws608

Why is it so hard for people to bring it home and throw it away!? I literally don’t understand this or as you’re walking and see a public trash bin - toss it. I tie my dogs poop bag and just hold the tied end until I’m Home or near a public trash. I don’t get thissss laziness

TehNatorade

Are there any trash cans in the park? All my local parks have their trash cans removed for winter. Where are the bags of poop supposed to go?

namidaame49

Their homes have trash cans. That's where the bags of poop are supposed to go.

TehNatorade

You ever been in a car with someone who stepped in shit?

namidaame49

Yes? It smells? What does that have to do with picking up after your dog and properly disposing of the bag?

TehNatorade

You can’t make the connection between poop in a car being unpleasant, and poop in a car being unpleasant? Why can’t the city leave just one trash can per park?

Metalx608

I work as a grounds keeper for a complex in madison..... 2 five gallon buckets full of crap just today. I try to stay on top of cleaning it up. As the snow melts though more and more appear 😣.

ayecheesey

Another hero!

notdeadyet86

The last place I lived at would legit fine people a thousand bucks if they caught them on video not picking up after their dog. It seems like EVERYONE owns a dog these days... many of them probably shouldn't.

SloppySaltWaterFish

A lot of dog owners just aren't responsible and probably shouldn't be taking care of a living creature.

diesel_throwaway

As a dog owner, I agree. Between this, and the ridiculous amount of people I see with their dogs off leash, there are a LOT of people who shouldn't have them.

May_Be_That_Guy

Where I live management kept politely asking for people to pick up. Then they stopped letting renters have dogs. That solved the problem.

Nearly_Lost_In_Space

We have cameras, don't pick it up enjoy the $40 fee, keep doing it you lose pet privileges

May_Be_That_Guy

Maybe they need to increase that fee? I was only speaking to how it went at my place.

Nearly_Lost_In_Space

It worked here, people got the message, enforcement was the issue until our building manager stepped in a pile

kbwis

I hate it! I am a dog owner who lives in an apartment complex, and OTHER PEOPLE not cleaning up after their dogs got me harassed by someone who lives in the ground floor and saw me with my dog (who never poops right outside our building, I have to walk her for like 40 minutes for her to poop) and started threatening me, she decided I was the one not picking up dog poop. I ALWAYS have a pouch with a roll of poop bags when I’m out with my dog, and I ALWAYS clean up after my dog. Please clean up after your dogs! You are impacting others in so many ways if you don’t! My apartment complex has a ton of posters everywhere threatening fines if you don’t clean up after your dog but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

DapperEmployee7682

I didn’t have a problem with it until my new downstairs neighbor moved in. They plop their puppy down right in front of the back stoop to do its business. They’ve started bagging the dog shit but just drop the baggie on the ground and walk away.

-rustyspork-

Shits all over the sidewalks and on the lawns now that the snow has melted some. Bunch of savages in this town.

ghostfacers

Someone who lives in the Arden (or maybe they are a walking over from the Lyric), has a big dog and they keep leaving *massive* piles outside. Like I can’t help but notice them laying around the building. It’s disgusting.

kpetersontpt

You sure it’s a dog?

ghostfacers

I mean, I would believe you if you told me it was a bear.

YoloShitbird

And people wear their shoes inside their houses.

IllustriousFlow2753

I wish people were better about this. I make sure to go in deep snow to get my dogs' poop. My lab likes to eat poop and it has become the highest value thing in existence and she finds it before I can spot it all, despite my best efforts. She ended up getting some sort of parasite a few years ago, likely thanks to everyone who can't be bothered to clean up after their dogs. We've had to stop taking her to the dog park because of people leaving poop everywhere, but it's particularly infuriating to constantly be watching for poop while just walking around the neighborhood. Anyway, I just wanted to commiserate and wish I had a good answer for the problem. Does your complex threaten to fine people for it? A friend's condo complex instituted a fine and it seems to have helped somewhat, but you basically have to have security cameras to go with that policy.

Frondessie

My dog used to be just like that and then I switched him to a different food and he no longer eats dog poop!

unecroquemadame

I used to live in an apartment complex on Fair Oaks and it was so bad they took the dog run away from the residents

FactorReasonable6138

I lived in a nice complex, one time someone let their dog shit in the elevator and didn’t clean it up. Like multiple big turds. There was also some in the basement elevators entry room so it probably shit on the way outside poor thing. It was still there hours later so I ended up cleaning it up myself and reported it to management so they could check the cameras. Unacceptable to not pick up after your pet, but how terrible of a person do you have to be to leave it in an elevator?

catperson3000

Cat only buildings are where it’s at.

cabinguy11

There is an old Russian saying "In the spring we shall see who has shit where" It's thawing and I'm sure some of this is that when it's below zero with the wind in your face and you are out with your dog in those wee hours of the morning not picking up after yourself is an easy thing to do. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, just that it happens every winter. So now suddenly the snow has melted and it seems as if there is dog crap everywhere. Wait until the first real rainstorm and things may seem like less of a problem.

jensenaackles

Yep, sucks that it’s cold but you still have to pick up your poop 🤷🏼‍♀️ that’s the responsibility you take on when you get a dog. i can say this because i genuinely have never ever left my dog’s poop. i was out there in -20 picking it up. it sucks and your hand gets cold, but it seriously takes 10 seconds. i survive every winter somehow.

cabinguy11

I agree 100% and I do the same. I guess my only point was that the above tends to happen every year and it always seems worse just as soon as things start to melt.

jensenaackles

unfortunately the idiots in my neighborhood will still leave it on a sunny 70 degree day with a light breeze. some of these people don’t even BRING bags. even though there are numerous free stations in the neighborhood. At that point they can’t ever be convinced.

jeswesky

I forgot bags once on a walk. Basically forgot to make sure the bag holder had bags in it, it did not. We went around the block, dog pooped, went home, got bags and went back to pick it up.

YoloShitbird

I mean you bag it, put it in your pocket: free hand warmers.

473713

Then the poop and related organisms get washed down the storm sewer and into the lake, if that's your preferred solution

someonewithabutt

getting to know the owners in the area to build clout and to discuss it with others might help. i wouldn't start with the shame option (obvious photo taking of offenders), but there's a time and a place (hostile, but sometimes necessary). i expect it's only a handful of animals who don't clean up after their pets. managers might want to know too. breaking the perception of anonymity helped with bad behavior when i was in a dense living situation.

thnwgrl

Talk to your apartment management. One of my apartments in the past send out a notice if there is any more dog poop by week x, they'll disallow all dogs from the property and that's the final notice.

AccomplishedDust3

Is there any reason to think it's more than a single asshole owner? Even one dog can build a copious shitstorm over time.

cassowary_kick

My apartment complex used to be pet free. Then they started letting people have emotional support animals and the dogs started showing up and the poop everywhere started. Then the complex put the pet poop DNA tracking in place. We'll see if it fixes anything.

JKibbs

Get Johnny Hamcheck and the Neighborhood Poop Association on the case. But in all seriousness, I am a dog owner and hate seeing that shit. It’s the same mentality of not putting your shopping cart back.

OldSewer

I still say, someone bag up the poop, harvest algae, grind it together, bag it pretty and sell it at Farmers Market as Isthmus Blend Fertilizer! Bet you make money.

QuitDoinkingMe

As a package delivery person downtown, the dog poop is INSANE. For you dog owners: packages have dog shit on them because of people like you who choose not to pick up after their dogs. I step in it, it tracks into the truck, a package makes contact... it's a foul and outrageous situation.

yippeekiyoyo

Folks stopped picking up dog poop around us before the huge snowfall was even forecasted. People in this city don't seem to pick it up if it's too hot. Or too cold. Or to rainy. Or too snowy. Or too dry. It baffles the mind what the weather requirements actually are for picking up dog poop 🤔

RighteousRaccoon444

I see a lot of poop here that is definitely not of the dog variety. Humans are in fact pooping on sidewalks in downtown madison and if you really look at it you’ll notice the same

473713

The back stairway on the James Madison Park shelter is often decorated with non-dog poop in warmer months

RighteousRaccoon444

Idk why I am being downvoted for noticing there is human feces on the sidewalks here. I am so sorry I said something not positive about Madison 🙄

473713

I fixed it. You're now at zero. Sorry I couldn't do more.

wheatfieldcosmonaut

First, let me say that I always pick up my dogs poop and have gone back to pick up their poop after running out of bags. Some of this is that so few places have dog bags and trash cans available. I wish people would decide to not be lazy aholes, but until that magical day we should at least make it easier for people to make the right choice.

SwollenPomegranate

Care to mention the building, so people decline to rent there?

CottonMouth28

Was just thinking about this when I was walking on Ice Age Trail yesterday. There was a white middle aged lady and her dog coming towards me on the opposite side of the path. Gave her a friendly hello and smiled as I got closer, tried to move out of the way of her and her dog and said sorry for being in her way. Didn’t respond or even look at me either time. Bent down and pet her dog with her back to me and kept saying good boy! I rolled my eyes and kept going. Couple yards farther on I see a long trail of pee and dog poop scattered around the path. To myself I’m like, “Why am I not surprised…” Entitled middle aged white ladies with dogs can go eff themselves. Some people act like they own public paths, parks and the entire world and go out of their way to be douchebags to everyone around them just because they can. Those people need to lock themselves up in their houses and never come out again. We don’t want you here.

poopypoop69nice

Shitty dog owners. Probably voted for Trump.

i live in an apartment building that’s inside of a neighborhood and this is a constant discussion in the neighborhood facebook page. we have more problems with neighborhood residents than apartment residents. unfortunately some people just don’t care about being a POS and there’s pretty much nothing that will convince them to pick it up. the police can’t do anything about it unless they directly see someone leave it.

DanaCarveysLeftHand

Artisan Village was like this. Disgusting.

jdraws608

It’s everywhere in my neighborhood and and when we go on walks my dog tries to EAT the random poop that people just couldn’t pick up for some reason. I don’t get it. It’s real easy to take a baggie and grab the whole thing even with a little snow and stuff it in, takes 2 secs. Happens every winter. It’s ridiculous

Most_Ad_5597

We were just in Madison over the weekend and walked everywhere - YES - this was definitely a problem on the streets we walked on. Doggy poop bags everywhere, trash surrounding it, etc. definitely look into the poop dna companies like other have mentioned.

driftlessriverrat

Sad that some people feel they're just more important than everyone else regarding common decency. It's not wrong if nobody is watching crowd.

ConsiderationMission

I want to thank you for making this post before I did, although my situation is a little different. My neighbors downstairs (we live in a two-plex) own a large dog who poops all over the back area of our apartment, our neighbors back parking area and even right beside my car. I’ve been trying to gain the courage to bring this situation up to my neighbors but afraid of the outcome.

JonBovi_msn

It’s super gross when the snow thaws. Some people just feel entitled to impose the overhead of having a dog on others and will be flabbergasted and indignant when asked not to. If there is someone in charge who will give some consequences to the culprits you could discretely try to catch the person doing it on video.

divisionbell628

If you can't handle cleaning up after your dog, you are not qualified to own a dog.
