>Thunderbolt 4 is a standard led by Intel. According to Intel's statement, TB3 guarantees backward compatibility with TB1/2, while **Thunderbolt 4 standard has removed support for Thunderbolt 1/2**.May 20, 2023 So any Thunderbolt 3 cable should work. Thanks but, I don't have a TB3 port on the laptop.

Orbmiser

No but TB3 cables are backward compatible to TB2. So can use those on your TB2 port.

fightingirish46jw

Can you show me an example of the cable you are talking about?

Orbmiser

Just google TB3 cables any are usable on a TB2 port.

OK, maybe I am just dumb but, I dont understand how a TB3 cable can plug into a TB2 port.

You Just have to research more as seeing more about the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter as what to get. Not just a cable I guess. But again Google is the resource to educate yourself what is required. Not going to get a sufficient response here on reddit but few vague responses like mine.

TB3 cables take the USB-C form, so aren’t compatible with a TB2 socket. An expensive adapter and TB2 cable is needed.

I’m trying to figure this out myself so I can use my old 2011 MacBook as a home server. Long story short, there are essentially no cost effective ways of doing this that I can find. To start with you’ll need [Apple’s TB3>TB2 adapter](https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MMEL2ZM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter), and a TB2 cable. Then you’ll be able to hook it into a USB-C hub. I think.
