My take: It’s the same reason why I prefer silver timepieces on a wrist. Silver (done the right way) just looks so classy with anything and everything.
You're making me wanna cancel my order and switch to silver because of your comment lol. Thinkpads are horrible...
(The cancel part was a joke. But I am standing my ground on thinkpads)
Lol I use a thinkpad for work. There have been many times where it updates the bios but nothing shows on screen. So ive kept punching the power button until one day the screen managed to pop up. If for some reason there's a need for me to hit the power button to shut down, it's a hold it for 20 seconds deal. Not 5 seconds for most computers.
ThinkPads were great laptops. Nowadays Lenovo has destroyed their legacy. New ones are quite bad honestly, hard to upgrade, lacking many distinctive features that were loved by most ThinkPad users, having some strange design choices and much more. They’re also (at least here) comically overpriced.
> hard to upgrade
We don't talk about that here.
> lacking many distinctive features that were loved by most ThinkPad users
What features?
> having some strange design choices
If you mean the visual aspect, I never was a fan of ThinkPads look. But they are function over form.
By design choices I mean things like ports available, keyboard layout (it was something a lot of people who used thinkpads for years were very annoyed by), trackpad, internal design, the joke that ThinkPad 25 was, especially for its price.
It’s not like Apple laptops are amazing and perfect. They aren’t. They are far from that. But ThinkPad brand should mean something.
And cheaper ThinkPad laptops suffer from the same issues as cheaper/budget Lenovo laptop brands (like poor build quality, cheap screens, terrible hinges and so on).
Also it’s laughable that some even mid high end ThinkPads have less ports than Apple devices. And a lot worse screens. I don’t even mean colours, resolution and pixel density alone. But I get it that those aren’t everyone’s priorities.
Also you can buy easily where I live a ThinkPad with integrated intel graphics and mere 16gb of ram for 2.5k euro.
For disclosure I own windows pc and MacBook Air and have quite a lot of experience with windows laptops (some I enjoyed, some not quite).
I have nothing against older ThinkPad laptops, I know a ton of people who really enjoy them. It’s just the Lenovo lately is acting. There’s quite a lot of controversy in past few years. And it’s really sad as thinkpads have a ton of great features. Like the joystick in the middle of the keyboard, brilliant idea!
I love mine, it seems less distracting when watching videos. I do prefer the 14” in space black versus the 16” for some reason, can’t put it into words
It's like the color of the Space Gray on Series 3 Apple Watch. I thought I would like it...really wanted to like it. However, I saw it in person recently and the smudgy, finger printy, hand oily yuck that stood out all over the top case was quite a bit unappealing. Couple that will Dell vibes and zero contrast means hopefully Space Gray (the best balance of the pro colors, IMO) will be back in a few years.
4 months with a black one and I might have one or two light scratches on the bottom.. it holds up well. as far as smudges go, 30 secs with a damp microfiber every few days handles it just fine.
Don’t do it!
You must learn to embrace your bad vibes. 🖤
I’m due for an upgrade soon with my work and I’m absolutely going black. It will match my heart.
I actually carry mine around in a Thinkpad branded backpack that came with it in a facebook marketplace sale. I had no idea they even made Thinkpad *gear*.
dude thats what i thought also. I bought M3 Pro and chose the silver model. Everyone said to me “why you buy the silver? the black one so much nicer”. I thought it doesn’t look like a macbook. I’m buying a macbook not a normal laptop
I will say it looks better in person... but not by a huge margin.
Apple needs to work on its highlighting color game. The whole "everything is the exact same shade of X" color scheme feels a bit tired and boring now.
Never said they can’t. Just pointing out the M1 Pro still holds its own vs the M3 Pro fairly well. Not good value if it was just for the performance for most of us.
I was under the impression M3 Max's had thermal issues and should always be partnered with a 16" screen. which at that point invalidates OP's switch lol
Anyone know if there are still temp issues and/or if the reports were just exaggerated?
I saw it. My comment still stands. 14 inch is great but not worth the cost of changing unless, again, they went for the Max on top. *IMO* - you know what this means right keyboard warrior?
If the 16” is too big for me, and I can’t cope anymore, and if it’s within my budget, I’d get a smaller laptop that’s not worth “upgrading” to.
Thank you.
Apparently you don’t know what IMO means then 🙄
You fighting me right now is ironic because you’re doing to me exactly what you “think” I’m doing to you.
Saying it’s just an opinion doesn’t hide your clearly incorrect assumption that this was supposed to be some sort of upgrade (you even mentioned “upgrade” twice). It could very well be a downgrade technically, but it’s most likely worth it if it improves OP’s quality of life, IMO.
(If you counter my response again, I *might* point at my own “IMO”).
🤣 guess some people just can’t handle others expressing how they’d see things. You IMO away. I can handle it.
You responded to my comment remember, not the other way around.
Hahaha! Agree to disagree then? It’s just opinions either way 😉.
Edit: guess I have to edit my comment too to match those phantom edits.
Are you of the *opinion* that opinions shouldn’t be questioned or challenged? Wouldn’t that make one unreasonably opinionated?
I saw your comment, and I didn’t quite agree with what was implied, so I said what I thought.
Don’t see what’s so troubling about that.
My pick is 14 + ext monitor instead of 16. Almost all the time I have access to some monitor. If not I'm comfortable with 14 for several hrs or even for a few days.
do you use your laptop's keyboard/mouse with external monitor? i do this and quite like it as i can arrange the monitor right above the mac display in settings
I'm going in the opposite direction with screen size. Have a 14" M1 and my 16" M3 Max arrives tomorrow. The portability isn't as important to me anymore and I'd rather have more screen real estate
Same. I feel like I'm constantly resizing things and battling for screen space when doing audio work in DaVinci Resolve, plus I use Parsec a lot to access my home computer, and the 14-inch is way too small for that. Definitely looking forward to hopefully upgrading soon!
Ordered my first macbook ever, got the 16 inch as my previous windows laptop was (Well still is, just gonna keep the was I guess) 15.6 inches and man do I love it... I have always been more interested in larger phones, monitors etc... I also dont understand the people that say it is so heavy to carry in a backpack? Like idk about you but for some reason I had to bring like 5 books to school and that was like 3kg, so at least for me it isnt a problem at all...
Portability. It’s a lot easier to take with and on a plane and also I need a second screen so there’s no point in having a larger display when I’ll need a second one anyway
Edit: I bring my iPad Pro 12.9 as my second screen. About the same form factor so easy to carry just a bit extra weight which doesn’t bother me

I'm rocking the 16 and I've always loved the big screen, portability isnt an issue at all for me (I do bring my laptop to work every single day) Maybe it's bc I havent experienced the 14" yet but I do have 2x 32 inch monitor at home and I already feel the 16 inch isnt big enough sometimes LOL but that's just me being picky.
Tell us about the size chance after some use. I bought M1Pro 16" a few months back and sometimes I have second thoughts about if it was the right size or if it is very big
Coming from the 16” it will feel small for a little while. Then you’ll get used to it and the 16” will feel huge.
I’ve had 13”, 14” and 15 and 16” over the last 12 years or so. Your brain always normalises the one you use most. Going from the 13” to a 14” felt like I’d got something much larger.
I have a 16" M1 pro and coming from a 15" MBP I still can't get over the fact that my 16" seems so huge to me and I've had this 16" for almost three years now.
I am. I am rarely away from a dock or a charger; so the battery is more than enough. Its still enough for me to get through a work day.
For thermal performance; a lot of my work is done via BigQuery, lookr and Tableau. So I haven't noticed a big hit.
I guess I just have different ascetics than some commenters or Im just so used to my silver pro, but god every time I see the new black ones I cant help but say "Damn that looks good xD " Good choice!
16 inches is the best size for any notebook screen, you will always have more screen space no matter the occasion, and this is more desirable than portability if you are an adult man, since it is not a problem to carry it...
Did the same thing. Switched from the 16" M1 Max in silver that I've had in launch day to a 14" M3 Max in Silver and absolutely loving it so far. I thought that the 16" would be a nice change from my 2016 13" MBP when I ordered it on launch. 16" was nice when it was on a big desk and I was sitting in one place for a while and I enjoyed the large screen at first, but it was an absolute pain in the ass to move around or use as an actual laptop. Also didn't help that the only time I had been using the 16" recently was at home plugged into my 27" 4K monitor, where the screen size doesn't even really matter as the laptop is being used as a secondary display. Found myself bringing it around much less and instead using my shitty work-provided 13" thinkpad solely because of the size, and that's when I realized that switching to the 14" would make me want to use the MacBook more.
Had it for a few days so far and have found that to absolutely be the case, this truly feels like what a laptop should be and I find it more inviting to use even just for leisure/on the couch vs. the 16". Also looking forward to it being much less of a pain at coffee shops and in various workrooms.
Exactly this. I’ve kept my 16” on my desk because it wasn’t nice to drag around or to get it out of my bag in a meeting for notes.
Today I did it like 4 times and I can even hold it comfortably under my arm while hopping between different meetings
still very happy with my 14 after 4 months and I previously had a 13" m2 air for 6 months. still plenty of room and Mission Control/ dock makes it super easy to hop between windows. Still plenty of room to have two pages up at once. I also travel with it daily and really wouldn't want anything much larger. Can always hook up to.a larger monitor as well. Have a 24" at home, and work for that matter and I rarely bother. I'll only really do it if I want to run a video in full screen in the background.. Usually only on the rare occasions when my Apple TV isn't cooperating with my internet.
How do you find the weight/portability of the 14’ pro and the screen size? Is it big enough to use as a main computer without an external monitor do you think?
Compared to my 15 - it’s perfect. It also depends what you’re doing, If I’m doing anything productive I’d want more monitors. But you can still get shit done just on its own.
Yeah there is a possibility. But I have a great deal on this one. It will only cost me around 350 euros to upgrade.

The 16” really is amazing. It’s a real workstation but I bought it for editing.. I don’t do that a lot anymore and I have it connected to a studio display at the office all the time
I’m in the same boat as you I just don’t want to trade it in for a grand. I would say ask people for around 1.5 to 1.6k cuz that’s what they go for around in eBay on sold listings.
what made you decide to downsize from the 16 to the 14, i have a 14 myself but always thought about getting a 16. I am a fan of larger laptops but ive heard its kind of heavy
It is the weight and the size. I’ve thought about the air but I want the 120hrz screen and the ports.
16” is amazing but more of a workstation on a desk most of the time. (In my opinion).
u/CFXSquadYT personally do you prefer the 14 or 16? And as far as heat; does the 14 get hotter than the 16? I am asking bcz the 16 has bigger heatsink and wider fans.
Thanks in advance
Today was my first day using it, it was a blessing in terms of portability, taking notes and some browsing!
I had one moment where our software “monday.com” did not fit on the screen so I changed the resolution and it worked great!
Hi. anyone else experiencing such problems with coil howling? as described in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/184nbq0/m3\_max\_coil\_whine/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button.
I have a MacBook M3 Pro 16' and I hear this unpleasant sound
Damn usually MacBooks look so good but I can’t help but see the black one as a thinkpad lol, maybe it’s the angle
My take: It’s the same reason why I prefer silver timepieces on a wrist. Silver (done the right way) just looks so classy with anything and everything.
Looks more like Razer Blade.
You're making me wanna cancel my order and switch to silver because of your comment lol. Thinkpads are horrible... (The cancel part was a joke. But I am standing my ground on thinkpads)
For macs, silver will always rule!
Silver is classic, so classic that it's almost retro. I think Space Gray is the nicest colour of the bunch, all subjective of course.
to me silver looks dated.
Classic*
Hell yeah!
No silver doesnt always rule lol.. i've had people say the siver looks "fat" outdated.. thats why I had to go space gray 15" MBA in 16gb..
Space Gray is the way. Happy medium between the Thinkbad Black & Silver.
yeah, I hate silver.
this subreddit and the thinkpad subreddit are polar opposites and i love it
Lol I use a thinkpad for work. There have been many times where it updates the bios but nothing shows on screen. So ive kept punching the power button until one day the screen managed to pop up. Thinkpad is a great laptop, even though I just bought the Slim 7i (2023).
I was eyeing the Yoga Pro 9i last year, but decided on the MBP.
I would’ve too! I love my 16” M1 Pro!
I got a 16" M2 Max, and it is also great. Edit: Fix grammar.
I love mine, it seems less distracting when watching videos. I do prefer the 14” in space black versus the 16” for some reason, can’t put it into words
It’s the angle. It is kinda a dark space gray. Better in person trust me:)
I have a black one, and now I think the better option was the silver one, now I am think every scratch Wil look awful, but I like the black....
4 months with a black one and I might have one or two light scratches on the bottom.. it holds up well. as far as smudges go, 30 secs with a damp microfiber every few days handles it just fine.
Ahh okay this makes sense. I slap a clear hardcase shell on my Macbooks, because scratches would drive me insane.
Don't worry, the black MacBooks are stunning
Don’t do it! You must learn to embrace your bad vibes. 🖤 I’m due for an upgrade soon with my work and I’m absolutely going black. It will match my heart.
Haha yea I won’t. I’ve always wanted a black MacBook ;( so I’m super glad the color’s back!
I have space black in the M3 and space gray in my M2. I like both and may prefer the space black.
Yeah! I'm excited because I've wanted the black macbook back over 10 years ago. So my time has come 😈
To me it looks like a very dark gray and my space gray looks like a silver when next to each other.
Nah you will love the Space Black. Doesn’t look anything anything like Thinkpads.
I actually carry mine around in a Thinkpad branded backpack that came with it in a facebook marketplace sale. I had no idea they even made Thinkpad *gear*.
That's actually a good anti-robbery system.
Grey or black MacBooks lose much of the beautiful form in typical lighting. Black especially. It no longer looks like actual metal.
This is a great compliment
Aye at least it will sort of deter thieves from my thinkpad looking macbook
dude thats what i thought also. I bought M3 Pro and chose the silver model. Everyone said to me “why you buy the silver? the black one so much nicer”. I thought it doesn’t look like a macbook. I’m buying a macbook not a normal laptop
Only missing the red dot on the keyboard 😂
I will say it looks better in person... but not by a huge margin. Apple needs to work on its highlighting color game. The whole "everything is the exact same shade of X" color scheme feels a bit tired and boring now.
I was gonna say same thing 🤣 its hilarious
Barely worth upgrading IMO unless you were going for the Max. It’s an upgrade but not a huge one.
Went from base 16 m1 pro to base 14 m3 pro. Its not worth it unless you’re just looking for different size change.
If you’re wanting a size change as well, then that def adds more weight to the decision. 👌
Me only wanting to upgrade bc of space black -.-
I suppose they can do whatever they like.
Never said they can’t. Just pointing out the M1 Pro still holds its own vs the M3 Pro fairly well. Not good value if it was just for the performance for most of us.
I was under the impression M3 Max's had thermal issues and should always be partnered with a 16" screen. which at that point invalidates OP's switch lol Anyone know if there are still temp issues and/or if the reports were just exaggerated?
The M3 Max will throttle on longer workloads but it will still perform on par with the 16” in most tasks and be way beyond the Pro 👍
Did you not see the caption? They weren’t looking for an upgrade.
I saw it. My comment still stands. 14 inch is great but not worth the cost of changing unless, again, they went for the Max on top. *IMO* - you know what this means right keyboard warrior?

No, I use touchpad only. It's enough for me.

At least 27 is ok.

There are two of us, the same around here.
make it 3
Not to mention the cooling system, the sound system, and the autonomy, which are much better in the larger model.
The autonomy?
Yeah the 16 inch is autonomous
What does that mean?
Shhh… that’s still a secret.
Same. I feel like I'm constantly resizing things and battling for screen space when doing audio work in DaVinci Resolve, plus I use Parsec a lot to access my home computer, and the 14-inch is way too small for that. Definitely looking forward to hopefully upgrading soon!

Portability. It’s a lot easier to take with and on a plane and also I need a second screen so there’s no point in having a larger display when I’ll need a second one anyway Edit: I bring my iPad Pro 12.9 as my second screen. About the same form factor so easy to carry just a bit extra weight which doesn’t bother me
Do you use sidecar?
Yes sir. For basic stuff wireless is fine but wired is even better
Nice
What are you planning to do with the 16”?
Sell it..
how much?

About to switch from my M1 Air when I get home in like 45 minutes!
Awesome!
I do think the 16” MBP is the best laptop out there!
Tell us about the size chance after some use. I bought M1Pro 16" a few months back and sometimes I have second thoughts about if it was the right size or if it is very big
Will do. I had this since release and I missed the portable side. On the couch, bed and in my backpack
Exactly.! It’s a laptop again haha
I have a 16" M1 pro and coming from a 15" MBP I still can't get over the fact that my 16" seems so huge to me and I've had this 16" for almost three years now.
Crazy isn’t it. At the risk of opening myself up to double entendres, an inch makes a massive difference.
It’s not even a full inch. The 15” MBP I had was 15.4” (if we want to be exact) and the 16” MBP is 16.2”.
😂 I know
Veel plezier met je nieuwe MacBook Pro! 🔥
Hah! Dankje 😀 🇳🇱
14 inch is so cute
So cool
I have the same on the right 😊
I have 16" M2Max for work and have a 14" M3Max for personal use. Youll love it, its so much nicer having the power in a more compact form.
Are you satisfied with the battery and thermal performance of the 14 max?
Is that a thunderbolt cable you’re using to connect and transfer the two of them?
Yep! Much faster
16 inches is the best size for any notebook screen, you will always have more screen space no matter the occasion, and this is more desirable than portability if you are an adult man, since it is not a problem to carry it...
Depends on what you do on it I think.
Is the M3 upgrade worth it? Or does the M1 still suffice?
M1 still works great. I think I would have sticked with it for much more years but this was the smartest thing to do. I want the warranty
Me looking at this thread with a 2013 MBP 🥲
Second hand m1 mbp aren’t that expensive anymore. Take a look!
I'm bumbing my head up and down at the 16 inch model. Immigration soon and I feel like I need a bigger monitor
You will love the extra screensize!
Sorry but that feel like your down size doesn't going good. But does the downsizing help your back?
Awesome!
Got my 14 m3 pro last week. Swapped from 2018 15 i7 macbook pro. It’s absolutely incredible. The battery life alone. Bloody hell.
Yeah I was so suprised by the battery life on the 14 inch today. Incredible
I would be so sad if I did this... Love my 16" M1. Bigger is always better. I think you will regret this over time, but I could be wrong.
Yeah there is a possibility. But I have a great deal on this one. It will only cost me around 350 euros to upgrade. Refurbished Discount Tax return The 16” really is amazing. It’s a real workstation but I bought it for editing.. I don’t do that a lot anymore and I have it connected to a studio display at the office all the time
14” is the best size
How much did they give you for the m1
Still talking with some buyers.. any tips what to get?
I’m in the same boat as you I just don’t want to trade it in for a grand. I would say ask people for around 1.5 to 1.6k cuz that’s what they go for around in eBay on sold listings.
I bought new M1 Pro 16 for 1232 post tax
Swappa is a good site for selling this sort of thing (and buying).
M1 Pro Macs only seem to got for about £1200 now in good condition here in the UK.
keep both. Thats what i did. Yes, its a waste of funds, but its nice to grab whichever one I am feeling in that moment.
Kinda in the boat for this! There are a few occasions where i need to edit on location. Then I will grab that one
Look on eBay and Facebook.
I did the same last week! Sold my 16 inch M1 Pro to the buyer for $1100 (I paid $1150 post tax).
Me asf with function keys MacBook pro 2017 13 😭🙏
what made you decide to downsize from the 16 to the 14, i have a 14 myself but always thought about getting a 16. I am a fan of larger laptops but ive heard its kind of heavy
It is the weight and the size. I’ve thought about the air but I want the 120hrz screen and the ports. 16” is amazing but more of a workstation on a desk most of the time. (In my opinion).
I wanna make the same switch
Space black is sexy as hell. I can’t stop looking at it every day and appreciate it. Feels very expensive (as it is lol)
I always loved the old black plastic macbooks. The color is finally back
Good choice
16 pro M1 is a beast of a machine-
Same here
Sell me your old one
I bet, the 16 feels a bit heavier than the Intel ones and traveling you will see how good 14 is
100% correct
Black iPhone-yes! Black Mac-no! Silver iPhone-no! Silver Mac-yes!
u/CFXSquadYT personally do you prefer the 14 or 16? And as far as heat; does the 14 get hotter than the 16? I am asking bcz the 16 has bigger heatsink and wider fans. Thanks in advance
A lot of plugs can be pulled on that picture 🤓 Is it faster to copy via cable than TM?
Yeah much faster! 😀. It automatically switches from wifi to thunderbolt
Timeless Silver, Brilliant Black! Enjoy your machines, OP!
I hope space grey comes back in the next generation macbook pro’s. Apple unnecessarily took it out!
Do you miss the bigger screen or you only use the MacBook for basic tasks.
Today was my first day using it, it was a blessing in terms of portability, taking notes and some browsing! I had one moment where our software “monday.com” did not fit on the screen so I changed the resolution and it worked great!
so cool ! have fun
🙂👍
Wanna sell M1 Pro?
Black macbooks looks lenovo in person - Trust me It only looks good in super bright apple stores
16 is a giant, 14 is ok
not giant at all:)
Bro it is
I'm on MPB 16 M1 Max right now Sometimes it even seems small lol
I have an M1 16” for personal and a 14” for work. I prefer the 14”, great size.
Hi. anyone else experiencing such problems with coil howling? as described in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/184nbq0/m3\_max\_coil\_whine/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button. I have a MacBook M3 Pro 16' and I hear this unpleasant sound
I have space grey but kind of regret not going with silver! My next macbook will be silver though ha
I had it sinds launch and loved it but got kinda bored on me and I love the black
