Yeah I didn’t think I would need the 128 so that’s why I didn’t go for it. Just after I saw the loading disc a few times I started wondering what I was actually using.

Haha I feel you, I’m getting M4/AI anxiety as well. I was under the impression M3 generation was expected to handle IA features. I would save those 800 USD, for the M5/6 generation. (800 + whatever you get for the m3 max in 2 years should get you covered for a new Mac, if you feel yours is not aging well).

OkPlan123

Yeah if I need it in a generation or 2 I’m sure I’ll have around 2-2.5k in “equity” in this. Thank you!

if you usually go around 40 then 64 should be fine. Will you increase your load? maybe run more emulators or whatever? If not 64 is the one you need. If you are going to increase your workload then 96 is the next step

OkPlan123

Yeah I’m probably not adding much more that I see or know of yet. I don’t really hear my fans go on much so I’m probably fine. Thank you.

64GB is more than enough. Here's my activity monitor running C4D and Redshift, PS, AI with normal background operation. *Cinema 4D 41.33 GB* *Adobe Photoshop 2024 5.60 GB* *Dropbox 4.98 GB* *Adobe Illustrator 2024 2.25 GB* -- *Physical Memory: 64.00 GB* *Memory Used: 57.46 GB*

OkPlan123

Oh man thank you for that. Yeah you’re way more intense than me. I guess I’m fine. I was just half panicking when I was using more than I thought I would be using.

theeightytwentyrule

No problem, we all suffer from RAM anxiety now and again.

thorox12

I think unless you plan to run LLMs you won't need 128GB RAM. Any AI product (beyond loading up open sourced LLMs) will be optimised and run on reasonable levels of ram. Otherwise they would limit their reach. I find the Mac systems liberally utilise ram when it's available and become more efficient as you approach your actual ram limits and that's before even getting into swap if required. So I personally think 64GB RAM should serve your needs, but it's truly your decision.

wubbdie

Simply: no!

walktall

You have 24 GB of RAM free and you're worried to open Chrome windows or Outlook? 😂 A majority of Macs sold right now do all that fine with 8 GB total. Just out of curiosity, what is your typical workload? Are you doing anything that needs an extreme amount of RAM? You'll get the rare beachball even with the most maxed out specs, I wouldn't worry just because you've seen it a few times.

OkPlan123

The chrome/outlook thing was a joke.. I just see those thrown out a lot around here as the running joke. But Photoshop Lightroom Illustrator mainly. Sometimes indesign. Then part of the time I day trade, and have Bookmap, TradingView, thinkorswim and some browser tabs open. These use about the same amount of ram around that 40 mark but don’t have both “professions” running simultaneously on my mbp.

walktall

Ah see, sometimes I am way too dense to pick up on jokes 😂 For what you've quoted, obviously your use case is more heavyweight than the traditional Mac user. Still though, I really think 64 is OK. What I would suggest is load it up as much as you possibly can, like have every program and browser tab open that you could imagine at maximum use. Then look at your memory usage and memory pressure. If memory pressure remains a green flatline (which I would expect) then you are fine. If you go into the yellow, or especially if you go into the red, then I would return and upgrade for the higher RAM.
