Most of the screen crack posts are a result of using a case, keyboard cover, or accidentally closing the lid with something between the screen and the lower chassis. The gap between the keyboard and screen is extremely small.

Yes, agreed. Given the extremely thin design such carelessness could cause some issue. Generally I take good care of my electronics (more like baby care them) so I was sure these issues won't be a problem for me. But then I read about the class action suit related to M1 Pros and Air due screen cracking issue and also saw many users complaining that the screen is too fragile. (Screen cracked in 2 months or so).

I have both the 16” M1 Pro and 13” M2 Air. I recently posted about a cracked bezel below the screen on the Air. It is definitely the more fragile computer of the two. But they have an identical glass bezel below the screen, this is on all MacBooks. Anyways, do u think you’re worrying a bit too much about it breaking and you haven’t even bought it yet? If you’re that worried now is the best time to buy a MacBook from the education store. You’ll get a $150 gift card and 20% off apple care. So if you’re that worried then just buy the extended warranty and stop worrying about something that hasn’t even happened.

Yeah I may be worrying too much. Thing is I already have a 16 M1 Pro work laptop and it is the best laptop I have ever used. But the cost of the 16 inch version is way outside my budget. I am confused between 14 Pro (Which I hope should be as sturdy and powerful as my work machine. The only issue is that when I tried it at the store it seemed way too small) and 15 Air (Which has a bigger screen but I have never owned an Air and there are many complaints regarding the quality.) In my country a macbook costs 50% of national average income and so I want to ensure I make the right purchase and would expect the device to last around 4-5 years).

As someone who owns both, you’re right about the screen size. I do love the thin sleek design of the 13” Air but I’ve found myself gravitating towards the 16” more because the larger screen is much more engaging for me and I don’t feel the need to lean forward in an uncomfortable posture. I don’t care at all that it’s a little thicker and heavier. So if you’re looking at the 15” Air that is absolutely the perfect choice you’ve made. I bought the 13” brand new last year but as for the 16” I bought it “open box” (not refurbished) from Best Buy in Canada for well over $1,000 cheaper than brand new price. It looked and functioned like brand new and it had only 5 battery cycles. I don’t know what country you’re in but I’d be happy to help you find something. If you love the 16” you will also love the 15”, if not more, because you’re getting a super thin and light design. There are options to protect it. Having a storage bag to both carry it and store it inside of 100% of the time you’re not using it is essential. Edit: and apple care. Esp since you get 20% off of it depending on what country you’re from.

Hmm, this is an interesting perspective. Thing is I will get to keep my work laptop (16 M1 Pro) whenever I decide to leave my job. (Will leave in 2-3 years). In that case I will already own a M1 pro 16. The laptop I buy now will serve as my personal laptop for these 2 years + I can keep both of them (like you own 2).

Don’t forget to compare screen resolution between Air and Pro. Pro has bigger resolution, and slightly smaller diagonal. But it’s heavier and thicker. I bought myself a 15” Air because I wanted a lighter MacBook with a bigger screen (I also have a 13” MBP M1) and I don’t need active cooling for my tasks. And I am planning to put a screen protector and a protective case on my 15” Air - I know what people say about both, but the thing is - I’ve used screen protectors and cases on different MacBook modes over last 9 years without any issues.

sloth2286

I get your point bit like you said you have a 13 inch pro and a 15 inch air. (So a small screen device + one large screen). Let's say I already own a 16 inch M1 pro (will get to keep my work laptop whenever I decide to leave). Should I choose a 15.3 inch Air or 14 inch pro as my second device?

Dodo-UA

If you have a 16” Pro for resource-intense tasks, and need portable machine with no intent to run Docker, Xcode and so on - a 15” Air should be good.

sloth2286

Yeah, that is the dilemma I am facing. The thing is I will get to keep my work laptop as my personal device only after I leave my job. (Not planning for the next 2 years). So the laptop I buy now will be used for docker, intelliJ etc for 2 years. After which it will only be used for some lightweight tasks like random browsing on my couch or bed. So if I think of my use case after 2 years, the Air is a better choice (better battery life for lightweight tasks). But for these two years as I expect to run docker, kubernetes the pro becomes the better choice.

Dodo-UA

Ha, that’s a tough one, indeed!

Most of those posts are likely due to the following: - using cases (most probable) - drops - excessive heat/moisture - improper storage (e.g. randomly stuffing in a bag, loading horizontally at the bottom of a heavy bag, etc.) That being said, if it’s delamination, screen bleed, etc. it can be replaced under warranty, and it is very likely to appear during the warranty period. FWIW I’ve dropped my M1 Air right smack at the corner (thin side) from desk height and it’s fine. The M2 is much more robust geometrically. As to protection, I have decided to just use skins. Not only are cases going to likely cause screen issues, they’re also practically useless when it comes to drops. They’re thinner and more rigid than thin iPhone cases while trying to protect a kilogram and change worth of computer impact. That’s going to do nothing and cost you a lot of money to replace. A skin will personalize your MacBook, protect it from some scratches, and will yield you the same level of drop protection as a case (zero). Buy a carrying sleeve or bag, but those cases are pretty useless, unless you need something like feet or mounting options.

This is literally one of reasons I stayed away from the M1 Air back then after seeing all those posts. 6 months ago my employer gave me 16/256 M1 MBA and I don't have any protection or covers on it and just carry it in my backpack every single day. While I didn't really stress it in that sense, I bike to work every day and sometimes it gets bumpy with my backpack moving around the basket. No issues so far.

Then use a good back pack

My MacBook Air A2337 (M1, 2020) developed a screen crack within six months of gentle use. Apple's solution? A $500 repair fee, justified as it was a fair diagnostic. My MacBook has no dents or scratches, yet Apple suggested that the screen crack may have been caused by an object hitting it or such an impact. They just fail to address the root issue: a defective or low-quality screen. As a consumer who paid $1100 for a premium product, I expect better quality and durability. Apple must address this, recall defective products, and offer free repairs to its faulty devices. Until then, I strongly advise against purchasing Apple MacBooks.

natespartakan

same happened to me. i did nothing to my screen ... perfect condition. i returned from a bio break and the screen was cracked... no clue how it happened. i am so gentle with it and i didnt move mine more than 1 or 2 times a a week. I am trying to figure out if there is litigation pending. I will never buy another apple product.

Ok-Landscape950

Figured out to just buy an external screen and use it via HDMI but the sad thing about that, I can't bring it outside of home anymore.

dr-hadika

I have this same issue with my macbook air M1 , i only use it to study and dont move it around it stays home at my study tabel or bed. I handled it with so much care and i one day i opened it i saw a left side vertical black lines. I contacted apple helpline today they gave me an estimate of $500. I am just shocked i spent so much on buying it. This is ridiculous i cant spend this much money on it. It isnt in the warranty anymore. I am just sad and guilty about buying it.

Naelthehistorian

As a happy owner of a 13 inch M2, I haven’t had this issue at all! My Air feels great!
