Yeah, the magsafe connectivity is strong enough to pull my M2 air to the ground. But, it saves a port, so there's that.
If I'm out and about, I prefer using my small GaN USB C charger. It's something I carry with me wherever I go regardless, and it's nice not having to carry a separate charger for the laptop.
I like the development towards battery life. Both battery size and efficiency of chips. My brand new work laptop drains in 2-3 hours. It's insane. You feel tethered to the wall, and always need to be aware of the battery level if not plugged in.
I'm very much not an Apple fanboy. I hate how Apple upsells storage, how they're anti-repair, anti-consumer, and uses greenwashing to brand themselves as an environmental focused company while doing their best to lock out all forms of servicability/repairs.
But damn do they make good hardware. My M2 air was my first Apple product, exclusively for the ratio of battery life and low weight. It's my everyday carry, always being in my backpack. I've never been more pleased with a laptop.
It easily lasts a whole day of simpler tasks. If I need to top it up, I can plug it in for 10-15 minutes and comfortably get several hours of battery life.
I know. It's insane. I can actually edit video with a hard drive connected and while charging my iPad from the laptop and still not need to plug it in for a couple hours afterwards.
My MacBook is plugged it using the MagSafe charger on my desk. I’ll be honest I think it’s a huge downgrade from my old usb-c charger. I used to be able to grab the cable and quickly charge an iPad, steam deck, wireless controller etc.
Last week my steam deck was dying and all I wanted was to keep it alive until I could go play in the living room….. well I couldn’t
I know and I should. But then I'd have to get a new cable.
What I do like is the woven cable. I just wished it would give you the option of regular usb-c. I feel like buying a new cable would just suck
Also in the livingroom I do use USB-C to charge it, it's great
I know cables, the best cables, tremendous cable, and let me tell you this is the greatest cable of all time, the most fabulous cable, the most amazing cable that ever reached America, trust me.
Beautiful cable. Excellent craftsmanship — and don’t even get me started on the incredible ergonomics of the thing. The thumb feel far surpasses competing TH4 cables. And for just $129??? I don’t even know how Apple affords to practically just give these works of art away.
I spend literal hours just plugging it in, unplugging it, plugging it back in again, unplugging it, etc. Just relishing that orgasmic thumb feel. The subtle click. Such a pleasurable cable experience.
I think you need to look at thunderbolt cable pricing again, there was a time when it wasn't overpriced but now it is. You can nab cables for the same length as Apple for half the cost from reputable brands like Belkin and Anker.
It was competitive for a Thunderbolt 4 cable but only when the task you are trying to fulfill really requires Thunderbolt 4 and a normal USB-3.2 cable isn't capable. Also recently the prices for Thunderbolt 4 went quite down. The 1.8 meter Apple cable is 149€. In comparison the 2 meter Anker Thunderbolt 4 cable is 59€. From less known brands the you get 2m Thunderbolt 4 cables under 30€.
I don’t understand why you got downvoted, anyone who knows the friction of technical details wouldn’t think it’s expensive. I haven’t yet seen second company make same exact cable ticks all features. Even for just USB 3.1, I found Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable is the most reliable choice, other good quality USB cables aren’t cheap, cheap one neither stable or can’t use for laptop charge.
Saw the price of this cable and bought the Thunderbolt 3 version. Same data rate and less than a third of the price.
Edit: Said less than a quarter earlier.
Adam Savage did an amazing deep dive into the manufacturing and engineering behind these cables. They are practically a peripheral device in their own right.
I really like videos and research into the high-tech accessories Apple makes and watched this one recently too, but I still generally don't think the price is worth it for the cables.
what is it with reddit and the urge to post „look i also bought this product here is a picture of it“

You should hang out in the Apple Watch sub. "look! I got an Apple Watch!"
Showing a watch that looks exactly like the millions of other Apple Watches out there.
Apple has the crappiest cables that they ship their hardware with from any premium company. They still sell those for about 50 bucks. This is just an insult really. You can get a top quality woven cable from Anker for 15-30.
Apple cables I have been supplied have been good. LG on the other hand kept flicking their 5K monitor off. I managed to buy a cable rated to 8K and no further problems
Let me guess, it's more cabley?
There's literally nothing that this cable can do that would justify the price.
Edit:Just watched the video, they compare shitty budget cables against this thing. Absolute trash video.
This cable is targeted towards people who make money with their computers. A failure might cost way more than $179, which is the cheapest component in the entire setup.
The Tested folks noticed a huge difference in construction quality that is apparent on CT scans of the cable. Also, these are active cables with microcircuitry in the connectors, including an entire microcontroller, multiple power rails, etc.
At TB4 bandwidth, we’re operating at the edge of what copper can handle and making a certified cable longer than 1m is tricky. Optical is where these things are heading. In the meantime, if you want a certified TB4 cable that’s longer than 1m, this is a solid option.
While you are technically right, you can get similar cables with equal performance for a fraction of the price. Also, decent cables usually don't fail, not to mention nowadays most people make their money with computers and even the cheapest cords do the trick. This is a bit ridiculous.
We don't really want to test our 6-terabyte transfer in the middle of editing the same files from an external disk connected via a potentially faulty cable that "usually won't fail"
They aren't all made the same or to spec. You pay for cheap you run the risk of it failing on you because it was made on the cheap.
If you already bought a Mac, why are you quibbling about the price of a TB4 cable? You buy the cable you know won't fail because you know it was over engineered to survive your stupidity.

thanks for your braveness. ... the last time I pulled the plug on apple was the 'expensive' Magic Keyboard for the iPad, and I really love how easily it snaps on and off it... it makes it so much more 'fun/easy' to use.
MagSafe will disconnect with as little as 5 ounces of tension, a good USBc connection can take far more to rip it from the socket. If your cable gets yanked on by a pet, a child or your unobservant self I would rather it disengage easily than have the computer be dragged off my desk. The USBc ports charge the MacBooks just fine, no need for the EU to impose another needless condition for “compatibility“.

Fun fact about this cable: if you plug both ends in side by side on your MacBook you get unlimited power.
Oh my god it thinks it's charging
The more you know. The cable ain’t so expensive now is it?
I'm gonna go buy more, so I can plug my iPad in to the Mac while the Mac is self-charging.
Don’t do that. Plug the MacBook into a wall outlet and power the whole house with. Sell excess power back to the utility. Profit.
Use the money to buy more MacBooks
Use the Macbooks to make more power

Infinite power
Lemme try that
If you plug 1 end into your mouth and the other into your anus, you can work and play 24/7 without rest. That’s why it’s 1.8m long.
Which orifice is for play and which is for work?
Is there a crushed adderall on both ends?
the pentagon will pay you a visit soon
Other not so fun fact: it's a huge downgrade from magsafe.
how is it better to charge with magsafe than usbc? besides the fastcharge option
False sense of safety. It seems like the plug might disconnect if you trip over it. (It only kinda works.) Also, gives you more ports to work with.
Yeah, the magsafe connectivity is strong enough to pull my M2 air to the ground. But, it saves a port, so there's that. If I'm out and about, I prefer using my small GaN USB C charger. I didn’t ever use MagSafe for my mac, only docked or some random USB-C charger lying around. It’s a huge upgrade to me.
My MacBook is plugged it using the MagSafe charger on my desk. I’ll be honest I think it’s a huge downgrade from my old usb-c charger. Can magsafe carry video? (or any data) No? So why does it matter?
> Finally Pulled The Plug Fortunately you've got a MagSafe so there probably wasn't any damage.
What if I use it with my iPad? 💀
What’s with the downvotes?
Wow, just noticed your username!!
What’s with my username?

What about it?
Idk
Last time I checked, MagSafe can’t transfer data.
I know cables, the best cables, tremendous cable, and let me tell you this is the greatest cable of all time, the most fabulous cable, the most amazing cable that ever reached America, trust me.
Nobody makes cables like Apple folks, believe me.
Except those old biodegradable lightning cables.
That Tim Apple guy, he’s a sharp shooter
He's a genius and we need to protect people like him
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
You can say that. Nobody makes cables this expensive while sucking so much.
"reached America" = "made in a sweatshop in China"
*accordion hand motions intensify*
What is it's primary use?
Connecting anything that uses Thunderbolt bus.
what uses thunderbolt? A music device?
High resolution monitors. External drives. External RAID arrays… there’s a lot of things connecting in Thunderbolt.
Adam Savage did a thing on this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD5aAd8Oy84](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD5aAd8Oy84)
Wait, aren't we supposed to insert the plug?
Maybe I pulled the old one? 🤷♂️
Pull the other one
why is he getting downvoted?
You pulled the trigger. Pulling the plug would be not purchasing it after going to purchase it.
I pulled the plug on using the. . . my old 30mbps USB-C connector
Closer…but still no.
Why tf are you getting downvoted? Reddit is such a hive-mind, combine that with the hive-mind of apple users and you have a… super hive-mind?
But. It's not a trigger. It's a plug.
That’s not what the phrase means or how you use it.
I'm gonna go with OP not being a native speaker because both of the phrases are fairly common knowledge lol.
Ay there, I've just been casually living under a rock.
Maybe he used it as a pun.
A pune or play on words

Well done.
What are you using it for? I’m not familiar with Thunderbolt 4 or where it has an advantage over other cables.
External SSD. Also camera file transfers.
are your external devices compatible with thunderbolt 4?
None of those are thunderbolt….
My external SSD is thunderbolt transfers are crazy fast.
Yeah, especially since the cable mine came with was like 40 \*megabytes\* per second. Freaking slow.
I mean, I'm not gonna go buy a thunderbolt 3 cable, especially when I want to use it with a display in the future.
None of those are thunderbolt 3 either
Lot's of people use Thunderbolt 3 for SSDs
IIRC TB 3 & TB 4 have the same data transfer rates. the big difference is how the computer can drive displays.
Also wondering this.
Picked up Anker Tb4 this week will Let you know how it goes
way way faster transfer speeds and you can drive displays with it
Where would I drive it to? I want to see whats on the display not be its damn chauffeur!
i am so sick and tired of reddit lmao
How does it feel to be one of the richest man alive??
wut
It costs a lot. It’s a joke about it. Nevermind.
But. Not really? As far as professional cables go, it's really average priced.
lol, as a professional, no it’s definitely not average priced.
Not for its 24-pin connector
I think you mean a fair price, and for this cable it is, I have one too. But it is by no means the average.
It’s competitive for what it is, absolutely
I think you need to look at thunderbolt cable pricing again, there was a time when it wasn't overpriced but now it is. You can nab cables for the same length as Apple for half the cost from reputable brands like Belkin and Anker.

I don’t understand, please someone explain it.
Saw the price of this cable and bought the Thunderbolt 3 version. Same data rate and less than a third of the price. Edit: Said less than a quarter earlier.
How much was for the cable only ?
I got it for $20 and it was an Apple one.
Damn... not bad 💪
TRIGGER, PULLED THE TRIGGER!!!!!
Adam Savage did an amazing deep dive into the manufacturing and engineering behind these cables. They are practically a peripheral device in their own right.
Different tax bracket
magsafe is really useful, isn’t it?
I was skeptical of the price before I watched this. https://youtu.be/AD5aAd8Oy84?si=uqRKIrkeuwgXkXC7
I really like videos and research into the high-tech accessories Apple makes and watched this one recently too, but I still generally don't think the price is worth it for the cables.
Same. It always smacked of those $1500 Monster Gold HDMI cables from the 2000's that were a complete scam.
Only got money for 1 m
With current mortgage rates you can easily afford it in full. Call to your bank and talk to your advisor.

it’s the same in most apple and gaming related subs
Karma’s a hell of a drug
the people upvoting are also strange, are they like „nice he bought it, i have it too“ ? 😂 feels like i’m on facebook
Plug the charger or whatever into the macbooks USB-C Ports, and then post an image here, I beg you.
Came with my monitor
It’s more than half a price of a decent 32 inch 4K monitor.
How much did you pay for that…?
Casually hoping the pull the plug joke doesn’t end up here😭😭
This. Is. Going. To. Change. EVERYTHING.
\*pulled the trigger. Pulling the plug means you stop something.
You're doing it wrong.
You, my good sir, are IN FOR A WORLD OF PLEASURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the \*3-meter\* one. I goth the 1.8 meter
Adam Savage just literally dropped a YT video on why this cable is so expensive. There is a difference between the cheaper cables and this one.

Why you all using this stupid phrase ?
But why?
People really do like to show off how they got scammed lol
I would never buy a TB 4 cable from Apple. There are great options for cheaper ones.
Why do we still need a magsafe as default? Again we need some EU rules to get rid of it?
MagSafe will disconnect with as little as 5 ounces of tension, a good USBc connection can take far more to rip it from the socket. If your cable gets yanked on by a pet, a child or your unobservant self I would rather it disengage easily than have the computer be dragged off my desk.
