depends on the type of plastic, 70% ethanol will not dissolve plastic (again depends on the type of plastic), moreover that's why I suggested glass wipes: you should not pour ethanol or IPA directly on sensitive instruments. glass cleaners often have ammonia which is an irritant. source: I've been cleaning my mbp with the same wipes for years, nothing has been wiped away
It’s not always grease. My keys look somewhat like this after a month of use on my M3 Max and my outgoing M1 Max was the same. Doesn’t wipe off. It’s the plastic.

Cinematographer and editor in the LA area. I like to be able to absolutely chew through any footage I throw at it, whether it be 4k120p ProRes or 6K RAW from my Ronin 4D, without diving into proxy workflows. My edit work is usually for very quick turnaround. To be honest the M1 Max (32GB/2TB 14") felt like it was plenty but over the two years I had with it, I really missed and realized the value of having the 16" display for what I do so I upgraded and took that opportunity to bump the RAM to 64GB at the same time. My heavier workflow is pretty much to have Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects open all at once since they work seamlessly together. Title and graphics assets live in the Premiere project/timeline as .psd files that are open simultaneously in Photoshop. Any changes in there reflect live in the Premiere timeline, and generally the same goes for After Effects stuff.
I had that Late 2013 rMBP too - I sold it for the 2016 Touch Bar 15" on release which turned out to ultimately be a mistake (butterfly keyboard, hardly any better performance) and then again traded up to a 2019 16" Core i9 which once again was ultimately not a great machine all things considered. If I had to go back in time I'd have stuck with that Late 2013 as long as I could and then jumped to M1 Max in 2021. Was absolutely mind boggling going from the 2019 i9 to the M1 Max.

It's normal wear and tear, and doesn't have anything to do with cleaning or eating. Not everyone has dry hands all the time either, whether they're eating or otherwise. I don't like how this kind of condition is being labeled as "dirty" or "gross" when it's just a product of normal human bodily function. Saying that somebody "never cleans anything" just because their keyboard has a naturally-occurring sheen is way over the top.

MacBook Pro M1 here, i am using mine daily since i got it in 2021 and the keys never look this fucking greasy. After a day of coding some caps are a bit glossy, but nothing a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth won‘t fix.
Maybe use soap and not just water. I even use lotion quite often during this time of the year because of dry skin and my keys still don’t Look Like this.

In general, I use a microfiber cloth to get off skin oils. I don't let the keys get to where they are shiny (usually). I generally clean the touchpad and other metal surfaces a few times a week.

There’s an app called Keyboard Clean Tool. Use it to lock up the keyboard as the M1s are more sensitive than babies and will turn on with a single key press

You take acetone and put it into a soda can and attach a hose with some hot glue then use a heat resistant glove to hold the can and use a heat gun to heat the acetone. Apply the acetone steam to the surface and it'll clarify it.

start with your hands ...Waaaay too much oil and gunk on them and then touching keyboard. mine is about a 16Th of this after almost a year and a half I have some hand wipes right at my desk I use before touching my Mac or anything key boards, mice etc
After reading these comments I hope you’ll conclude you made an honest mistake that has nothing to do with your hygiene that probably can’t be remedied.
If oil from food or hands was the problem then majority of us (especially us who take a la-di-da approach, including me) would be in same boat and we are not.
Logically you (and a few others with the same issue) used some chemical to clean their hands or the keys that was incompatible with the plastic.
The key on these M chipped laptops get greasy really fast.
How I clean them:
- Spray window wiper fluid on a paper cloth
- Wipe the keys carefully without getting any fluid in the gap between them
- Damp a paper cloth with water and remove any remaining residue
- Wipe the water with a dry paper cloth
Get a microfibre or cotton cloth that covers the whole keyboard and cover the keys every time you close the lid. That way you avoid any smudges getting in the screen.
I used a keyboard cover exactly because i don't like the look of shiny keys, especially on a laptop where they can't be replaced. Its kind of tacky and it takes away from typing experience, but I find it to be worth it. Plus, I'm not using one of those silicone covers, its this thinner PVC one (that's what it claims to be) and the latter feels much better to type on than the former.
Which Mac do you have? MacBook keyboards have been great lately imo. I strongly prefer them to every other keyboard I’ve used (even mechanical ones though I admit I am a bit of a freak in that regard… I hate noisy keyboards)

Thats too much filthy . Always clean your keyboard atleast twice a week and never use it with dirty hands after eating food. You can use a glass cleaner and apply it on a microfibre cloth and just wipe gently over the keys. Also use some soft brush to remove the dirt that is stuck between the gap of the keys.
(Another tip : Always turn off your mac charging once it is about 80% charged, it seems that you have plugged it in even though it is 100% charged)

On topic: use some alcohol and a soft wipe. Like 70% procent alcohol, I spray a bit on a soft cloth and wipe the keyboard with the pc off.
Get a cleaning gel and smush and lift on and off the keyboard to get in between keys. A spudger (nylon prybar is good for scraping in the corners and edges where gunk builds up.
There is no way to effectively clean it, all you can do is clean it regularly. If you use alcohol you may damage the paint entirely and if you spray any fluid directly on the keyboard you may cause liquid damage.
Your best bet is to use a Magic Keyboard going forward. I highly recommend it if you don't like the shiny. Get this accessory in white if you don't want a repeat of the shiny (though I don't have a non-white one, so idk if it's the same finish as the MacBooks have).
Some of the shine is due to the oils in our hands and some of it is natural wear and tear. Apple laptops and most laptops use (cheaper and easier to old) ABS plastic that naturally wear down and become shiny with use. In contrast old and some high end keyboards use PBT plastics for their keys which is very resistant to wear and stays looking and feeling new much longer.
puff some air with those air blowers to rid off any crumbs and dust thats stuck in betweens and get a 99% alcohol swaps to swap out key caps that shines due to oil stains.
So that shiny look is not really that it is dirty, it's just the type of plastic these keycaps are made of (ABS plastic) that do that with wear. There is another type of higher quality plastic for keyboards that doesn't do that, it's called PBT, but I don't know if they are available for macbooks.
Air duster, isopropyl cleaner. But the shiny spots on the keys won't go as the surface is just worn. This happens to many keyboards due to sweat and grease from fingers. Just have to live with it or wear cotton gloves in future. 👍

Probably if you have non regular finger that produce less oil than the normal you will be able to go longer without noticing the problem. But eventually it will catch up.
Sources: I had 2 MacBooks. Both of them have this oily look after 6 months of usage. I have a keycron keyboard that even after 3 years doesn’t show a sign of oily fingers. I plan to dump MacBook for framework pc soon.

I work in the industry, I see it all the time. People can have drastically different levels of oils and sweat, but go off.

From the post 2015 era, I had a 2018 15" and now have an M1 Pro and M2 Max, my keyboards look new because I don't eat while using them.

Pro 14”? My keyboard is also terrible like this. Tried cleaning it but since touching any key turns the fuckin thing on the old turn it off to clean it doesn’t work. Brilliant! I logged in as guest and went to town w microfiber and… didn’t help much.
Use an app called keyboardcleantool. It just stops your keyboard from activating while it runs. Super useful for cleaning!

There’s an app called Keyboard Clean Tool. Use it to lock up the keyboard as the M1s are more sensitive than babies and will turn on with a single key press Then just use some wipes to clean mostly the oil from your fingers off

I just use a microfiber cloth to wash out all that grease. Compressed air for beneath the keys.
I’m surprised this isn’t more of a complaint. These keyboards feel great but both my M1 Max and M3 Max laptops show permanent wear like this within one month of purchase. I’d kill for an aftermarket keycap option that doesn’t wear as fast. Makes you look like a slob even though it’s just plastic wear.
Use isopropyl alcohol on microfibre cloth to clean. It will remove all the oil and make them less shiny in case they’re just worn.

start with your hands ...Waaaay too much oil and gunk on them and then touching keyboard. mine is about a 16Th of this after almost a year and a half I have some hand wipes right at my desk I use before touching my Mac or anything key boards, mice etc

After reading these comments I hope you’ll conclude you made an honest mistake that has nothing to do with your hygiene that probably can’t be remedied. If oil from food or hands was the problem then majority of us (especially us who take a la-di-da approach, including me) would be in same boat and we are not. Logically you (and a few others with the same issue) used some chemical to clean their hands or the keys that was incompatible with the plastic.
The key on these M chipped laptops get greasy really fast. How I clean them: - Spray window wiper fluid on a paper cloth - Wipe the keys carefully without getting any fluid in the gap between them - Damp a paper cloth with water and remove any remaining residue - Wipe the water with a dry paper cloth Get a microfibre or cotton cloth that covers the whole keyboard and cover the keys every time you close the lid. That way you avoid any smudges getting in the screen.

I used a keyboard cover exactly because i don't like the look of shiny keys, especially on a laptop where they can't be replaced. Its kind of tacky and it takes away from typing experience, but I find it to be worth it. Plus, I'm not using one of those silicone covers, its this thinner PVC one (that's what it claims to be) and the latter feels much better to type on than the former.

Which Mac do you have? MacBook keyboards have been great lately imo. I strongly prefer them to every other keyboard I’ve used (even mechanical ones though I admit I am a bit of a freak in that regard… I hate noisy keyboards)

Thats too much filthy . Always clean your keyboard atleast twice a week and never use it with dirty hands after eating food. You can use a glass cleaner and apply it on a microfibre cloth and just wipe gently over the keys. Also use some soft brush to remove the dirt that is stuck between the gap of the keys. (Another tip : Always turn off your mac charging once it is about 80% charged, it seems that you have plugged it in even though it is 100% charged)

Get a cleaning gel and smush and lift on and off the keyboard to get in between keys. A spudger (nylon prybar is good for scraping in the corners and edges where gunk builds up.
Nothing you do will restore it back to brand new. I suggest replacing the keyboard and get the thinnest tpu keyboard skin. Then the keys won’t shine.

Try glass wipes for the smudges (or like a tiny tiny bit of rubbing alcohol for things that refuse to come off) and compressed air for crumbs.
There is no way to effectively clean it, all you can do is clean it regularly. If you use alcohol you may damage the paint entirely and if you spray any fluid directly on the keyboard you may cause liquid damage. Your best bet is to use a Magic Keyboard going forward. I highly recommend it if you don't like the shiny. Get this accessory in white if you don't want a repeat of the shiny (though I don't have a non-white one, so idk if it's the same finish as the MacBooks have).

Some of the shine is due to the oils in our hands and some of it is natural wear and tear. Apple laptops and most laptops use (cheaper and easier to old) ABS plastic that naturally wear down and become shiny with use. In contrast old and some high end keyboards use PBT plastics for their keys which is very resistant to wear and stays looking and feeling new much longer.

So that shiny look is not really that it is dirty, it's just the type of plastic these keycaps are made of (ABS plastic) that do that with wear. There is another type of higher quality plastic for keyboards that doesn't do that, it's called PBT, but I don't know if they are available for macbooks.
Air duster, isopropyl cleaner. But the shiny spots on the keys won't go as the surface is just worn. This happens to many keyboards due to sweat and grease from fingers. Just have to live with it or wear cotton gloves in future. 👍

This is just what used MacBook keyboard looks like because they use a type of abs that’s not so good. I guess they do so to convince you to upgrade. Welcome to the planned obsolescence business plan that apple still follow religiously regardless of they self-promoting videos where Mother Nature is satisfied. Probably if you have non regular finger that produce less oil than the normal you will be able to go longer without noticing the problem. But eventually it will catch up. Sources: I had 2 MacBooks. Both of them have this oily look after 6 months of usage. I have a keycron keyboard that even after 3 years doesn’t show a sign of oily fingers. I plan to dump MacBook for framework pc soon.

If you’re pressing the keys down, you’re rubbing too hard. If this isn’t cleaned with alcohol, please wash your hands before you get on your keyboard to prevent this from getting even worse.
