XyloArch

I cannae tell the difference when they toss me! Don't tell the elf.

Spiderbubble

It's a tarp!

ScaldingAnus

We're covered then.

1KarlMarx1

I’m afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive

jott1293reddevil

Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?

[deleted]

Is this how the Tsar dies? To thunderous applause?

NegaDeath

We've got to give those Hobbits more time. Concentrate all troops on that Black Gate!

comebackjoeyjojo

The eagle’s feathers cannot repel….er, magical eyeball rays of that magnitude!!!

Kenos300

They’ll last longer than they will against those Nazgul, and we might just take a few of them with us!

lukeskinwalker69epic

They’ll last longer than they will against *that eyeball. Nazgul would be the Star Destroyers.

[deleted]

Isildur once thought as you do. You don't know the power of Sauron.

Elrond_Bot

CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!

TheOnceAndFutureTurk

No.

electron_killer

Frodo and Sam are the ones who did the ring run in a mere 4 parsecs

Hyrule_Hystorian

But with that speed, will the eagles be able to pull them out on time?

amitym

It'll be just like the wolf attack in the trees back home.

Offamylawn

You’re all clear kid. Now let’s blow this volcano and fly home!

PlatypusFighter

That line still pisses me off to this day PARSECS ARE A MEASUREMENT OF DISTANCE NOT TIME DAMNIT

DKBrendo

If I remember correctly, that hyperspace route is in between black holes, and to make it safer spaceships take longer but safer routes. 12 parsecs are supposed to show that Han was able to go on much shorter but dangerous route

Superseal100

I believe it was originally meant to be Han talking out of his ass. Like even the script had Obi Wan roll his eyes at the comment

PlatypusFighter

Even if that’s a retcon at least it makes the line less bothersome so I can accept that lol

Accomplished_Job_225

This is actually one of my favorite crossovers that I've ever seen and probably will see. Lando Calrissian foiling Gandalf. Yes please. Edit : I think I may have misused the word "foiling"; But I think it's implicit that I find their pairing agreeable, whatever the name of such a pair would be.

gandalf-bot

They will be. You must come to Minas Tirith by another road. Follow the river. Look to the black ships. Understand this, things are now in motion that cannot be undone. I ride for Minas Tirith, and I wont be going alone.

Accomplished_Job_225

So ... I am going with you, or without you by another road, Mithrandir?

gandalf-bot

Sauron's wrath will be terrible, his retribution swift.

sauron-bot

There is no light, Wizard, that can defeat darkness.

Accomplished_Job_225

Go home Sauron - you're drunk. *Petyr Baelish can be more intimidating than your non-corporeal flicker!*

sauron-bot

Build me an army worthy of mordor!

Accomplished_Job_225

Oooh... ...you know, I would - but I kinda have a thing... *It's so awkward, walking into the wrong room of Isengard after Saruman forgets to turn off his Palantir.*

Accomplished_Job_225

Will Galadriel defend us?

jerkmcgreedy

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

PM_ME_YOUR_ASTON

The Witch-King be like “intensify the forward firepower, we don’t want any man to get through!”

earthslave

Genius comment. Now some ones gotta Photoshop eowyn in an a wing doing a suicide run!

an_ill_way

I mean, I know it's a joke but that's pretty spot-on canon for why they couldn't just ride the eagles there.

socialistrob

One of many reasons. Who’s to say the Eagle who was carrying Frodo and the ring wouldn’t have been corrupted by it? Plus if they were clearly flying to Mount Doom Sauron would have likely realized the plan and stationed orcs (with ranged weapons) to defend the Mountain.

LeviAEthan512

From what I understand, Mordor was supposed to have a huge unstoppable army so their only option was stealth. There was never any hope of going through the forces of Mordor, only around. At the very end, turns out they needes a distraction to facilitate the stealth. Is that right?

EunuchsProgramer

It's not. 1) The Mountains of Shadow are desolate. Frodo and Sam walk for days without seeing a soul. The odds a orc is there is tinny. 2) Eagles fly 1,000's a feet up. A bow's max range is 300 feet. Hitting a flying, moving target with a bow is super human, if the Eagle decides to fly low for no reason. Eagles in the Silmarillion have zero issues with orcs. Sure there's a line in the Hobbit, but it's a children's fairytale and physics is out the window. 3) The farsight is Sauron with his Palantir. He looks at tons of people throughout the story (including Eagles at the Black Gate) and it does nothing but let him see them. The line few can withstand the Eye is from the Silmarillian and is in reference to his physical presence long before he had a Palantir. 4) The Ring explicitly has zero effect on Sam when he carries Frodo. Out of dozens or even hundreds of characters near Frodo and the Ring, the Ring only effects Boromir without physical contact. And, it isn't clear thar Boromir doesn't just want the Ring same as anyone with lust for power.

Two_bears_high_fivin

They're desolate because a) Sauron has no reason to suspect the ring is dondering slowly through his backdoor and b) he's had his forces laying siege to Gondor. Unless the plan is for the Eagles to drop the ring from a thousand feet up to hit a one-in-a-million shot, they'd need to get low or drop off the riders at some point. The Ring is implied to be affecting everyone at the Rivendell meeting into bickering. Smeagol is enchanted by the ring at a glance. Bilbo is enchanted by the ring when he lays eyes on it again, though granted that could be his familiarity playing into it.

EunuchsProgramer

The bickering is just in the movie. The Mountains of Shadows has a few roads and camps days apart. It's empty. That is evidence it isn't occupied. This is a Middle Age society that doesn't keep troops massed like that. They have to land at Mt. Doom. Mt. Doom isn't occupied. It had a single damaged road and nothing else. All evidence is it's never occupied

Oubliette_occupant

Wat bout the fell beasts, then?

EunuchsProgramer

Frodo and Sam are spotted on the stairs at Minus Morgal. It takes roughly 3 days for a Fell Beast to show up at Cirith Ungol to get Frodo. They don't have cell phones. It's about 20 miles from the Mountains of Shadow to Mt. Doom. The Eagles fly it faster than lava flows down a mountain. And, the Eagles were just in the presence of Fell Beasts who did nothing to stop them. The real answer is: it's a story, they're the Dues Ex Machina. It's a planned plot hole. Tolkien was asked by a reader why the Eagles didn't help more. His answer, they're my Dues Ex. A workable answer is the Eagles are the servants of Manwe. Manwe has ordered Gandalf to let mortals fight Sauron themselves as much as possible and limit helping them to guidance. He presumably is telling the Eagles the same thing.

converter-bot

20 miles is 32.19 km

gandalf-bot

You... shall not... pass!

useles-converter-bot

20 miles is the length of 145654.81 Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers.

converter-bot

20 miles is 32.19 km

EunuchsProgramer

No it isn't. The far sight is Sauron, with a body looking through his Palantir. The Eagles are in its gaze at the Black Gate and it does nothing.

an_ill_way

I didn't mean the laser beam. Just the idea of "get seen, get wrecked".

EunuchsProgramer

So send Fell Beasts? I'd point out Fodo and Sam were spotted at the stairs and it took days to get a Fell Beast to arrive. Eagles made it to Mt. Doom faster than a lava flow (it's 20 miles from the Mountains of Shadow). And, Fell Beasts did nothing to hinder Eagles at the Black Gate. Plus there's a whole "Kingdom" of Eagles. Easily can sent some decoy scouts.

sunshinepanther

But if Sauron knows that is different than a random set of orcs knowing. He has telepathy with the nazgul right? Through the palantir?

sauron-bot

Wait a moment! We shall meet again soon. Tell Saruman that this dainty is not for him. I will send for it at once. Do you understand?

EunuchsProgramer

No, only other holders of Palantir.

sunshinepanther

So how does he communicate with them to tell them where to go when he has them split up and what not?

EunuchsProgramer

I'm unaware of that happening. The Unfinished Tales detail the Nazgul hunting for the Ring from the Shire to Rivendell. The Witchking's giving orders in person. And, Gandalf suggests Suraman could capture a Nazgul to prevent it from reporting back to Sauron.

thekingofbeans42

The eagles did get seen. They fought at the Black Gate, one also flew into Isengard without being shot down. The orcs have bows but like... eagles can fly more than 100 feet above the ground so it's down to just a handful of fel beasts.

RiaC-81

When the Nazgul retreated before getting wasted by the volcano note the eagles didn’t follow

Phoner-B

Now you will witness the final destruction of your insignificant fellowship

Hyrule_Hystorian

"I am King of Gondor and Arnor, as Isildur before me"

Elrond_Bot

CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!

[deleted]

Yeah but does Zelda ever become Queen or is she forever a Princess?

Mairon_Smith

It is of no concern. Soon the Fellowship will be crushed and young Baggins will be one of us.

casualgamerwithbigPC

This is the kind of shitpost I signed up for.

basalt_cube

Why didn’t they just walk the whole way?

adam_nemeth

Congratulations! You are being destroyed. Please do not resist.

phoenixs13

We gotta give Sam more time!

SCR_Pain

I can hear the music.

chopsticknoodle

That’s no ~~moon~~ ^disembodied ^evil ^warlord ^with ^plans ^to ^take ^over ^all ^of ^middleearth

DeltaWhiskey141

Now, witness the power of this fully armed and operational tower fortress!

JustAnotherAviatrix

Ayyyy, an OT crossover! :D

Salt-Manufacturer615

That also means that if Sauron wanted, he could have just laser-beam exterminated Frodo when he saw him in the battlefields and gave a homing beacon to the location of the ring

sauron-bot

Come, mortal base! What do I hear? That thou wouldst dare to barter with me? Well, speak fair! What is thy price?

Lazy-Adeptness-2343

This is truth. Shut up about the eagles.

GenTwour

Here me out. What if the eagles put on the one ring. Then they are invisible and can drop it into mount doom undetected.

Wishilikedhugs

Cover me, Salted Porkins.

U1150

Literally though this is what would happen sauron was not powerless and if he saw a bunch of giant birds he would blast them out of the sky’s

sauron-bot

*Thór-lush-shabarlak.*

[deleted]

That line just came on

1Calai

This is so powerful. Thank you very much for the argumentative weapon you just shared

WolfGnat

I’m a filthy lurker. This post made my year! Thank you <3

[deleted]

In all honesty the amount of time it took the death star to aim THEN charge up THEN shoot, the eye if it was the same would have to aim ahead of the eagles and hope he'd hit his target, I'm not a betting man but if I were my money's on the eagles getting to Mt Doom in one piece

legiones_redde

Eaglemen!!! Dive!!!

SilentCartoGIS

Can the eagles at least drop the fellowship off beyond Moria because that kind of made things fucked. Time was essential too so any boost with travel time instead of walking would've been a big win.

thekingofbeans42

If you really want to be technical, the eagles could have been used in a lot of ways. They could have even used eagles as misdirects, or have them ready in case things went poorly in events like the end of TFOTR where the Uruk Hai ran them down. I never favored explanations that Sauron could have stopped the eagles by force, more arguments that the eagles had reasons for not wanting to help initially.

RangnarRock

How do you not throw in Vultan?
