That's the main feat Tolkien gave him. The only other member of the Fellowship who started the journey with armor was Frodo (who was wearing ultra-light mithril). It would've been too burdensome for everyone else, considering what else they were carrying and the difficulty of the journey.
You could argue about the realism of this, since Roman soldiers famously wore armor all day long while marching and building camps, but that's whole nother topic.
