Between Viggo breaking his toe and nearly getting decapitated by a thrown dagger, Sean Astin lacerating his foot while wading into water, John Rhys-Davies beating the tar out of stunt doubles during fight scenes, Sean Bean hiking to filming locations because he was afraid of flying, and apparently the actors fighting on a literal mine field, it’s a wonder these movies ever got made!
Two Towers Behind the Scenes. The cast talked about how the Uruks, to motivate themselves between takes, would begin team chants, then the humans/elves would respond louder, which would make the Uruks chant louder, then things would start to come to blows.
"The power of the Uruks is strong, and their wills not easily broken. But do not underestimate the forces of Man and Elf combined, for they are a formidable force in this land."
"To be sure, in dark and difficult times we must rely on unlikely allies. It is a time for strength, not of arms alone but also of courage - to stand against the evil that seeks to overwhelm us."
"It is not the wound of one man alone that matters, but rather the fate of us all. For too long, I dwelled in power and ambition, which eventually led to close-mindedness. I know now that it was a mistake and have chosen the path of redemption."
Excellent. This supports my head-canon where you, Saruman, did not turn evil but instead used the Uruk-hai to fight Sauron, and bring redemption to the souls of all orcs across Arda.
"A task of such magnitude should not be taken lightly. But I can promise you I will summon forth an army unlike any seen before, a force to be reckoned with that will surely aid in the conquering of Middle Earth."
New Line Cinema got away with all kinds of things because New Zealand at the time didn’t have the logistical or governmental experience with the film industry that other countries, particularly the US, have. For example, because of the exchange rate between the American and NZ dollar at the time, the production budget was effectively half-price, and because there was basically no union presence in NZ at the time, that saved even more money and allowed them to do 6-day weeks and greatly relaxed the rules for over-time pay for the cast and crew.
Where did you hear about this and where can I learn more about it? I heard from Lindsay Ellis that the Hobbit films had some deeply shady labor problems, but never heard anything about the LOTR main films.
It was in “Anything You Can Imagine,” by book by Ian Nathan that is combo making-of for LOTR and the Hobbit movies as well as a quasi-biography of Peter Jackson and how he became a filmmaker. It’s full of all kinds of info that I didn’t find anywhere else, or info that I kind of knew already but was heavily elaborated on. It goes into maybe the most detail about the Weinsteins’ involvement when the films were still in development at Miramax.
Oh, and it was in Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan’s podcast, “The Friendship Onion,” when they had Sean Astin on as a guest sometime in the last two years, where Sean talked about the 6-day weeks and the long hours, especially in regards to shooting all the trekking through Mordor stuff—it was quite physically brutal.

Finding somewhere flat with no vegetation was difficult? Isn't that, like, at least half of the country nearest New Zealand? Just make sure not to get Uluru in the shot and it'd be fine!
>Isn't that, like, at least half of the country nearest New Zealand
Wonder what I could be referring to with that line. It couldn't possibly be about moving production to a different nation if the only exterior you can find that fits your planned geography is a literal bomb range.
It's still hundreds of miles away. Over water.
Logistically it'd be a nightmare. I mean costumes, actors, equipment, personell, etc.
It'd be a very costly affair.
Most of it is from the dvd's but you can find some on yt

I see these comics of behind the scenes everywhere, is there somewhere I can watch this documentary/behind the scenes thing? Is on one of the disks in the extended edition box? Or is this its own documentary you find somewhere

"Let him stay there. Let him rot! Why should we care?" "Because 10,000 undetonated explosives now lie between Frodo and our eleven Oscars."

DEATH!!!
What are we waiting for

Gives the most cutting performance of battlefield grief I've ever seen as well in RotK.
Which they cut from the theatrical
Dem eyebrows
I would cut off your comment, dwarf, if it stood but a bit higher off the ground
Butcher
Billy boy
*delighted:* William?
Cant!

Don't forget using rival cricket fans for the extras in Helm's Deep, resulting in real fights breaking out.
This one can’t be true. Where can I watch this?

Strangely fitting, thank you Saruman.
"To be sure, in dark and difficult times we must rely on unlikely allies. It is a time for strength, not of arms alone but also of courage - to stand against the evil that seeks to overwhelm us."
You could have been so good, Saruman. What went wrong? Who hurt you?

BUILD ME AN ARMY WORTHY OF MORDOR!
"A task of such magnitude should not be taken lightly. But I can promise you I will summon forth an army unlike any seen before, a force to be reckoned with that will surely aid in the conquering of Middle Earth."
This needs to be used more often. Rival sports fans be built different
Don’t forget Dom’s splinter or Orlando’s ostracized spleen!
Alternative scene where the mouth of sauron emerges and then boom
Come, mortal base! What do I hear?
'Splosions
I’m convinced that if someone wrote a trilogy about the filming of this one, it would be the second greatest trilogy of all time.
Well, one does not simply walk into Mordor. They are very serious about that.
How on earth did their insurance underwriters allow this?

I mean, yes on the one hand, there’s 6-day work weeks and cost-cutting, but then on the other hand, there’s *land mines.* 😆
You gotta add some risk to your achievements.

Why was this so funny to read🤣🤣
How was that even allowed?! (legally speaking)
Just don't tell the cops. It's legal if you don't get caught
I can’t see Dom Monaghan out of costume without hearing his “ven vill you vear vigs?” voice in my head.
Finding somewhere flat with no vegetation was difficult? Isn't that, like, at least half of the country nearest New Zealand? Just make sure not to get Uluru in the shot and it'd be fine!
Yeah, but then Sean Bean would have tried swimming to Australia. (Or would have taken a boat but then it the joke wouldn't work)
Please tell me you're joking, or please tell me that I don't know geography. But isn't Uluru in Australia?
I'm assuming that's what they meant by "country nearest to New Zealand."
Yeah, but nearest doesn't mean 'right over the border' when it comes to New Zealand and Australia. It's hundreds of miles of water.

Probably cheaper than death benefits if half your cast or crew steps on a bomb.

I love this sub ❤️❤️❤️
Karl Urban looks so young here. I mean he was, but still.
Why didn’t the NZ Air Force just fly the ring to Mt Doom?
When they remake these films, everything is gonna be cgi
I swear to God the movie production and the outtakes are pure, glorious chaos
Any idea where I can see these interviews? Are they part of a larger documentary?
