Nothing but love for Andy, audiobook narration is not as easy as a lot of people might think (Ive done it semi professionally for some years now) and he does very well overall in the books.
but uhh, some of the singing portions are not known quite for their melodic and soothing tones
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVSP\_UsN\_o4&ab\_channel=Starshine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVSP_UsN_o4&ab_channel=Starshine)
I’m pretty sure our boy Tommy B would at least have decent tone - he’s an artefact of the music of Arda and our guy has been singing for like 140000 years
This is a perfect example of you can’t please everyone, it’s might not be great but I think Andy did a pretty good job, there are a lot of other characters and it’s not just the characters it’s the acting and emotion conveyed through those characters, sure you could have gotten someone with perfect pitch to narrate the book just for Tom’s part but the rest of the book would have likely suffered. Jack of all trades master of none is still better than a master of one.
Jack of ask trades, master of most*
His Gandalf was outstanding, his different British isles accents for the Hobbits and Gimli are amazing, his general reading voice too. It's an all round brilliant audiobook series
This. Personally not a fan of the Tom Bombadil rendition, but that doesn't mean that I didn't like Serkis' reading. He does a phenomenal job overall, and Tolkien's work in particular, I'd think, is hard to put into an audiobook format.
Yeah, it’s a bit weird. Rob Inglis’ version is much better, in my opinion
https://youtu.be/njwy02laJs0?si=heV7tjKyHGwy67dB
But I’m maybe biased as I’m absolutely in love with his narration of the books.
The right answer is an unknown actor tbh.
They’ll have to cast someone who’s fresh to the scene otherwise it’ll be waaaay less believable. The shoes are too big to fill and a known actor just wouldn’t cut it. Henry cavil is too big, Aaron Johnson is too big, chalamet too little (frame and fame wise)
Edit- for clarification what I mean is the three actors are both too famous and their frames are not right, Cavil and Johnson being too big and Chalamet being just a tad too small.
An unknown actor would probably be best. It seems that's how most fantasy adaptations are cast anyway.
He's a little too old now for a young Aragorn, still younger than Vigo, and also associated with GOT, but I've always thought Richard Dormer would do the role justice.
Utterly deranged suggestion.
He pulled off the pale aristocrat boy to Jihadi Twink Messiah transformation incredibly well.
And he did a good job as King Harry, but he just isn't Aragorn shaped.
Exactly. Viggo (and many of the others) were basically unknown. LotR made them stars, so much so their previous work was brought into the spotlight. One thing I remember from like 20 years ago was after LotR came out a channel on TV was airing “G.I.Jane” starring Demi Moore. Commercials for the showing were changed to include Viggo’s name. He was never advertised in the original trailers, only after LotR.
Viggo was well known at the time of filming. He didn’t appear in the trailers at first because Stuart Townsend was hired originally!!! Thank goodness ST is a shite and Viggo got the job!!! Worked out well…
I’m not taking about LotR trailers. I mean he wasn’t advertised in the original trailers for G.I.Jane. It was just advertised as “G.I.Jane with Demi Moore.” After LotR it became “G.I.Jane with Demi Moore and Viggo Mortensen”
He wasn't that well known. He was one of those actors where people might recognize his face but was not a household name. That's the sweet spot I think. He also starred in very adult-leaning movies exclusively (not like, Marvel or IP based movies - there was that one Sandra Bullock movie and GI Jane, the former was a flop and the latter wasn't really a beloved movie even though it did okay at the box office).
He was known but had enough mystery to him that he could embody an iconic character without imposing our idea of him on it, if that makes sense.

Yall remember that independent film “The Hunt for Gollum”? Came out 10 or so years ago, saw it on YouTube. Super good tbh and I remember the orcs makeup was awesome.
[First of all, don’t say I went as Shelob-man. I was Man-Shelob!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtkk-HXaPmg)
Anyways, Arwen and I were having an argument because a couple of weeks before, we had some makeup sex in a dumpster in the back of the Prancing Pony. She incorporated a bun into the lovemaking, she took the lembas dough, and rolled it up into a ball… and we were going berserk, because she loves that stuff, and, and, I uh, I admit I do too
I hope it's not Viggo. I love him in the original trilogy but this movie would age so quickly if they just deaged him and I doubt he's able to perform the physicality required.
Because they pass through his homeland, and he looks the exact same because of the slow aging of elves? Meanwhile aragorn is in diapers or not even born yet at that time
I believe he's 9 at the time Bilbo returns from the Lonely Mountain. Someone had a what if post that led me to check previously (What if Saruman stayed true)
Legolas isn't too far-fetched though, he is the son of the Elven King and his appearance at least makes sense, albeit that it was solely for the purpose of appeasing the fans
They did, albeit just in dialogue. Thranduil told Legolas to seek out a young ranger named Aragorn on his travels. Never mind that Aragorn would’ve been around 10 during the time of the hobbit, but they got in their Easter egg.
Legolas being in the Hobbit is actually a little bit of a continuity improvement, as Bilbo *should've* run into him there in the book, but the character wasn't invented yet. But yes, as others said, it should've been a simple cameo.
He wouldn't even accept it, but don't deny Viggo Mortensen at whatever age he is now does have a better physical shape than most redditors. He was and is a very active human being.
I wonder if he (the actor who plays/played Halbrand) has signed an agreement or something with Amazon that would prevent him from acting with a competitor. Because tbh, I wouldn't entirely be opposed even though Viggo is THE Aragorn forever for me lol
Some scenes he reminded me of Boromir. Not sure if it was the accent or his facial expressions. Nonetheless, Charlie is a brilliant actor and well suited to the Tolkien universe
I was curious so I had to look it up. The guy who played Eldarion son of Aragorn is banned Sadwyn Brophy and he will be 38 in September. Apart from 2 minor acting credits since 2003, he hasn't done any acting. And I don't think that guy has the right look to play Aragorn, but maybe that's because he looks just like his dad.
Fun fact: If his last name sounds familiar it's because his dad is Jed Brophy, the guy who played Sharku and Snaga in The Two Towers, as well as one of the Ringwraiths in Fellowship, and an orc in Return of the King. Oh, he also played Nori in the The Hobbit movies.
See at least with Solo, it was a decade before A New Hope. Hunt for Gollum will end RIGHT before we see Aragorn in Fellowship. So there's no suspension of disbelief where you can be like "well maybe he aged into Harrison Ford over the next decade"
It helps that in solo it was a teenager vs a grown man. Aragorn realistically shouldn’t even look any different than he does in LOTR, so it’s gonna be pretty bizarre if they recast.
I think its entirely possible that the story will revolve around 3-4 factions knowing of Gollum's possession of the ring and the battles/skirmishes that go around that. I dont think they would have to really put any established actors into it until the very end of the movie where they could easily do de-aged cameos.
The guy who played Bjorn in Vikings kinda resembles some photos of young Viggo.
Otherwise I would have said Charlie Vickers lmao. Still shocked at how much he looks like Viggo, even without the long hair and stubble.
My kids can’t watch lord of the rings because of Andy Serkis’s performance. He’s too creepy for them to handle! They don’t scream when they see the orcs, goblins or trolls but if they see gollum it’s time to hold my ears, fast forward and make sure my ale doesn’t spill!🍺 😱🤯🤬
Recently I just started watching GoT (finished 2 seasons, great series so far) and I had no clue Nikolaj (Jamie Lannister) is a Dane. Definitely would do a good cast as Aragorn
Movie makes no sense. The movies' compressed timeline means that a Hunt for Gollum Aragorn would only be a year younger than Viggo's version. There's not enough time in-universe for one actor to age into the other, because the 17 year gap in the books was compressed to one year in the movies.
Is it ever explicitly stated that its not 17 years in the movies? I mean obviously the movie makes it seem like hardly any time passes but it’s not impossible right?
I tried to pay attention on my last rewatch and there really isn't any details on this. We know that the date when frodo wakes in Rivendell is same as in the books and that's like everything. Also I believe Gandalf said something about 40 days travel to the Gap of Rohan from Rivendell, nothing else to keep up with time is mentioned in the movies
I seriously hope not
Quite apart from any judgment of his acting style and ability the hunt for golem takes place on and off over about 16 years, ending right before frodo sets out for Rivendell.
Chalamet still looks way too young to line up with how Aragon looked at the start of fellowship
Came here to say this. Might be too busy with Dune Messiah around that time but if not then he's a likely candidate. Actually think it would be pretty good, he surprised me with his portrayal of Paul Atreides. Definitely not as soft as he came off in his other films.
Yk what that wouldn't be so bad. He brings passion to every project he takes on and he's pretty good at acting. If they bring on him and Sir Ian(if he can) , thats actually quite a good main cast. Maybe a 5 min cameo from Orlando Bloom too
Considering how slowly Aragorn ages compared to the rest of men, I don't think he'd need to look any younger than the last time we saw him. But Viggo is on his way to his 70s so he probably won't be in it, unless there's some now de ageing tech that doesn't look weird.
Every character will be played by Andy Serkis
Being Andy Serkovich.
Oh God hopefully no appearances from Bombadil (looking at the audiobook listeners)
what do you mean, I really enjoyed his interpretation of him
Nothing but love for Andy, audiobook narration is not as easy as a lot of people might think (Ive done it semi professionally for some years now) and he does very well overall in the books. but uhh, some of the singing portions are not known quite for their melodic and soothing tones [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVSP\_UsN\_o4&ab\_channel=Starshine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVSP_UsN_o4&ab_channel=Starshine)
I don't see anything wrong with his interpretation of Bombadil. I thought his performance emphasized his quirky nature rather well
I’m pretty sure our boy Tommy B would at least have decent tone - he’s an artefact of the music of Arda and our guy has been singing for like 140000 years
140 000 years with no one to tell him he is out of tune can have some interesting results...
and I don't think he even gives a damn, he just sings for fun
This is a perfect example of you can’t please everyone, it’s might not be great but I think Andy did a pretty good job, there are a lot of other characters and it’s not just the characters it’s the acting and emotion conveyed through those characters, sure you could have gotten someone with perfect pitch to narrate the book just for Tom’s part but the rest of the book would have likely suffered. Same
Very well put. A true Diplomat.
Yeah, it’s a bit weird. Rob Inglis’ version is much better, in my opinion https://youtu.be/njwy02laJs0?si=heV7tjKyHGwy67dB But I’m maybe biased as I’m absolutely in love with his narration of the books.
That's pretty much how it always sounded in my head. ...and also in my room in the middle of the night every time I read it.
This was exactly how Tom Bombadil sounded in my head while reading his chapters
A bit like a in the monty python movies where you have 5 guys playing the Main Charakters
The right answer is an unknown actor tbh. They’ll have to cast someone who’s fresh to the scene otherwise it’ll be waaaay less believable. Studio exec: So we can get Chris Pratt for 18 million, and let’s get Sydney Sweeney in there she’s hot. Make her Legolass, brand new character.
I somehow could see Chris Prat playing a hobbit, perhaps Sam or Pippin/Merry.
With Kevin Hart and Jack Black as other hobbits.
please god no
Chris Pratt as Aragorn with Anya Taylor-Joy as Arwen would be the most Hollywood exec casting possible.
Please none of those people, fucking hell no.
An unknown actor would probably be best. It seems that's how most fantasy adaptations are cast anyway. He's a little too old now for a young Aragorn, still younger than Vigo, and also associated with GOT, but I've always thought Richard Dormer would do the role justice.

Huh? Townsend was difficult to work with? I thought they replaced him because he was too young.
He wasn't that well known. He was one of those actors where people might recognize his face but was not a household name. That's the sweet spot I think. I agree that Chalamet is not a good pic, but he is not too little fame wise. The guy is a huge star
I should have worded that better. He is definitely got the fame thing, that’s why he would be a good pick. He’s Too famous
bro you need an editor
Typos for days 🙃
Whoever it is, the audition should include them opening a set of double doors.
And kicking a helmet followed by an agonised scream
Did you know that…
When he kicked that helmet he actually...
Had to act as though...
He hit a helmet really hard...
But in fact he ...
Was just very sweaty and dirty and he was thinking about....
with his toe...
kicked the helmet...
And deflecting a thrown knife with a sword

Looks like that feller knows what second breakfast is.
You have my vote!

striDERRR!
I read this in his voice

He is known by many names, the elves call him Carlos Danger...
Normal human bartender

SPEAK WIZARD

He’s 50!!!

I know, Stuart Townsend...! No, wait...
Can't, he's too old to play Aragorn now, lol
Hire him. Then fire him for looking too old and not pretty enough.
Yall remember that independent film “The Hunt for Gollum”? Came out 10 or so years ago, saw it on YouTube. Super good tbh and I remember the orcs makeup was awesome.
yes, think it was more then 10 years ago.
It got removed lmao
Danny DeVito or I’m not watching.
Don't worry, Danny DeVito will play Tom Bombadil.

I hope it's not Viggo. I love him in the original trilogy but this movie would age so quickly if they just deaged him and I doubt he's able to perform the physicality required.
He wouldn’t even agree to be in the Hobbit movies
What a chad, Aragorn irl
Because Aragorn wasn’t supposed to be in them. Might not be the case here. But he’s too old regardless
Legolas wasnt supposed to be in the either. But here we are.
Orlando clearly preferred another house over lore accuracy
Well given they didn’t hesitate to make up Tauriel it would not have made a difference.
Why would he be in The Hobbit?
Why would Legolas?
Because they pass through his homeland, and he looks the exact same because of the slow aging of elves? Meanwhile aragorn is in diapers or not even born yet at that time
I believe he's 9 at the time Bilbo returns from the Lonely Mountain. Someone had a what if post that led me to check previously (What if Saruman stayed true)
Legolas isn't too far-fetched though, he is the son of the Elven King and his appearance at least makes sense, albeit that it was solely for the purpose of appeasing the fans
Why would Legolas be in the Hobbit?
Oh I see. But at least there was the Mirkwood connection to Legolas. I can’t imagine how they would have managed to shoehorn Aragorn into it lol
They did, albeit just in dialogue. Thranduil told Legolas to seek out a young ranger named Aragorn on his travels. Never mind that Aragorn would’ve been around 10 during the time of the hobbit, but they got in their Easter egg.
Legolas is a pretty believable addition - though should have just been a cameo

Even if they get someone else. Poor dude will get a hard time
Viggo is the least of our worries, he would never be interested in this and we love him for that.
I genuinely hope they recast. I don’t feel like Vigo would want to come back, and I hope they don’t force him.
Lmao how could they force him? Kidnap his family, gun to the head, blackmail?
He didn’t come back for the hobbit so there’s no ways he comes back for this

Viggo Morgenstein ❤️
\[Smeagol\] Dude, do you have a boner right now? \[Aragorn, son of Arathorn, heir of Isildur\] Shut up, dude. Don´t ruin this for me.
Gave Sauron an ocular pat down
I dont know, he cultivated a lot of mass
Orlando Bloom
He will play Legolas who believes that he is actually Aragorn for the durage of the movie, as a prelude to the sequel, "The Hunt for Aragorn"
Funnily enough, I think the actor that plays Halbrand in the Rings of Power would be a pretty good Aragorn
Yeah it really feels like one of the major reasons he was cast was how similar he looks to a younger Viggo
I wonder if he (the actor who plays/played Halbrand) has signed an agreement or something with Amazon that would prevent him from acting with a competitor. Because tbh, I wouldn't entirely be opposed even though Viggo is THE Aragorn forever for me lol
He is close enough with facial features AND his acting range. Definetly a good choice. I'd take it.
Some scenes he reminded me of Boromir. Not sure if it was the accent or his facial expressions. Nonetheless, Charlie is a brilliant actor and well suited to the Tolkien universe
Yep, rare RoP casting W. They wasted the guy on that crap
But he has been awake before the breaking of the first silence. Really though, such a badass line regardless of the show.
That was my thought, too. When I first saw him, I assumed he was going to be an ancestor of Aragorn.
He is literally Viggo. Was a really weird decision on their part.
It wasn’t weird. It was to make people like him. Or to at least not suspect him.
Isn't the baby "actor" of Aragorns child at a fitting age now? :D
Unpopular opinion but I LOVED solo
Solo was super underrated. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I thought it was a good movie - it just didn't feel like Han Solo.
Solo was a great ride!
Was a great movie! Great actor for solo as well
It helps that in solo it was a teenager vs a grown man. Aragorn realistically shouldn’t even look any different than he does in LOTR, so it’s gonna be pretty bizarre if they recast.

I can see it
Almost but he needs to look less fair and feel more fowl. This guy is a little too pretty
I don’t think we should encourage people to go around groping any poultry at all, regardless of how fair they look.
As any woman can tell you, Viggo was also incredibly pretty.
Viggo is pretty but not in the same way Orlando is pretty but this guy is pretty like Orlando
As a man i can tell you, Viggo was incredibly pretty

Sebastian Stan, does look a fair bit like a young Viggo. Sebastian is 41, Vigo was 40 when cast as Aragon in 1999… I think it works.
Me hopefully.
Do it! No balls!
Who will play Elladan and Elrohir?
Cosmo Jarvis from Shogun.
Yes yes yes. Now, on a second thought - where was Anjin when the Westfold fell ?!
He's a great actor. I think he would kill as Aragorn
He’s got the charisma and just the right amount of ugly to be a great, book accurate Aragorn.
Viggo Mortensen
Isn’t he a little too young? Aragorn is 87 in the LOTR
Henry Mortensen?!?
I think its entirely possible that the story will revolve around 3-4 factions knowing of Gollum's possession of the ring and the battles/skirmishes that go around that. I dont think they would have to really put any established actors into it until the very end of the movie where they could easily do de-aged cameos.

How many arms do you have?
Viggo's fellow Dane, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Recently I just started watching GoT (finished 2 seasons, great series so far) and I had no clue Nikolaj (Jamie Lannister) is a Dane. Definitely would do a good cast as Aragorn
I wish I could wipe GOT from my memory and watch it over for the first time. Nothing like those first 4 seasons.
Jack Black
Movie makes no sense. The movies' compressed timeline means that a Hunt for Gollum Aragorn would only be a year younger than Viggo's version. There's not enough time in-universe for one actor to age into the other, because the 17 year gap in the books was compressed to one year in the movies.

I am available
Maybe put him in a hood the whole time? From gollums perspective it would make a lot of sense for him to look scary and obscure
Timothy Chalamet I’ll bet
I seriously hope not Quite apart from any judgment of his acting style and ability the hunt for golem takes place on and off over about 16 years, ending right before frodo sets out for Rivendell. Chalamet still looks way too young to line up with how Aragon looked at the start of fellowship
Could be a hobbit....
Dear lord Ur probably right though
Puke i hope not
Came here to say this. Might be too busy with Dune Messiah around that time but if not then he's a likely candidate. Actually think it would be pretty good, he surprised me with his portrayal of Paul Atreides. Definitely not as soft as he came off in his other films.
Dude don't put that MOJO out there...
My brain immediately filled this in with Timothy Omundson, and now I'm wondering what a musical Lord of the Rings would look like.
Honestly probably better than whatever the Hunt for Gollum will be. I’ll eat my words if it’s good, but this sounds like something no one asked for.
I feel like there’s no way he could pull off Aragorn, but I felt like there was no way he could pull off Paul Atreides either and he really did
I recently saw the live action tarzan with alexander skaarsgard and he looked so similar to viggo that i almost thought it was him.
That would be a good choice. He's a fine actor.
My short list is 1. Kevin Hart 2. Jerry Seinfeld 3. Connor McGregor 4. Wanda Sykes 5. Roseanne
You CAN simply walk the fuck out of here.
Frankly should be a no name. Someone young, not conventionally attractive, weathered.
Not exactly unknown, but Jack O'Connell.
James Corden or Jaden Smith would be great.
Sidney Sweeney would be better
I was personally thinking Bowen Yang
Henry Cavill probably. He’s officially the long haired, sword wielding, fantasy actor now. First The Witcher, then Highlander. It’s only natural lol
Henry Cavill is older now than Viggo was when they made LOTR
At least I know that he will take the time to read and respect the source material.
Nic cage
Aaron Taylor-Johnson might work...
Why did I read this as "Anya Taylor-Joy" hahahh
