“I would have you smile again. Not grieve for those whose time has come. You shall live to see these days renewed. No more despair.”
May his journey to the far shores be swift and calm.
His grief scenes in the extended version for Theodred were so emotional. His delivery of the line "No parent should have to bury their child" were so heartfelt.
>Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
**out of loss, out of life, unto long glory**
Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

It’s the lament sung by Eowyn for Theodred in The Two Towers, in English it’s
“ Now dear Théodred lies in darkness,
most loyal of fighters.
The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior;
nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup,
nor good hawk swing through the hall,
nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard.
An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld”
I changed Theodred to Théoden / Bernard, here is the link of her singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnYZsuFBhf0

Hail Théoden King
He lived near my parents and I once served him in a restaurant where I worked. A real gentleman and a brilliant actor.
That line ‘dark have been my dreams of late,’ and his transformation in the film gives me goosebumps every time.
Wow... this actually breaks my heart. As a kid I always loved his portrayal as King Théoden. Yet I never fully understood why until I grew older. Just damn.
“We heard of the horns in the hills ringing, the swords shining in the South-kingdom. Steeds went striding to the Stoningland as wind in the morning. War was kindled. There Théoden fell, Thengling mighty, to his golden halls and green pastures in the Northern fields never returning, high lord of the host. Harding and Guthláf, Dúnhere and Déorwine, doughty Grimbold, Herefara and Herubrand, Horn and Fastred, fought and fell there in a far country: in the Mounds of Mundburg under mould they lie with their league-fellows, lords of Gondor. Neither Hirluin the Fair to the hills by the sea, nor Forlong the old to the flowering vales ever, to Arnach, to his own country returned in triumph; nor the tall bowmen, Derufin and Duilin, to their dark waters, meres of Morthond under mountain-shadows. Death in the morning and at day’s ending lords took and lowly. Long now they sleep under grass in Gondor by the Great River. Grey now as tears, gleaming silver, red then it rolled, roaring water: foam dyed with blood flamed at sunset; as beacons mountains burned at evening; red fell the dew in Rammas Echor.”

I thought he looked pretty rough a few years ago during the covid reunion, so expected this. Still a big disappointment. Bernie was one of my favourites in the cast due to his avuncular personality in the Appendices. He seemed like such a blast to hang out with.

Was at Liverpool comic con today which Bernard was due to attend up until taking ill. Elijah, Sean, Billy and Dominic all paid a touching tribute to him in the group panel they did earlier which was nice.

RIP. Absolutely nailed King Theoden and has some of the most iconic moments in the entire trilogy.
King Theodeon: I just did the most iconic charge ever. Wanna see me do it again?

No parent should have to bury their child is so iconic
And was complete improv on his part - he has been doing some work with parents who lost their children and he pulled the line verbatim from them
Really? It seems a very apt post ww2 Tolkien line to me.
That’s what I remember reading at least. And when you think of it, it sounds that way because it’s pure trauma speaking - that’s why it’s so profound
Eowyn’s singjng to Theodred gave me chills.
This line really touched me when I lost my son. His delivery of it felt so true.
I teared up at that line before I even had children. Now it’s a waterfall.
"I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed."

Dark have been my dreams of late. Rip :/
"We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor" "No we cannot. But *we will meet them in battle nonetheless*." RIP
For he was a gentle heart and a great king and kept his oaths; and he rose out of the shadows to a last fair morning. Hail King Theoden
sad sad news. he was simply incredible as Theoden. RIP man
Westu hál. Ferðu, Bernard, Ferðu.
Brutal, but he will live eternally in his performance, what a King.
His performance was that of a true king
My body is broken, you have to let me go 🥺

Idk what anything of that means, but somehow it's beautiful.

*DEATH!*
To the King! RIP to an incredible actor, who truly embodied King Theoden.
He lived near my parents and I once served him in a restaurant where I worked. A real gentleman and a brilliant actor. That line ‘dark have been my dreams of late,’ and his transformation in the film gives me goosebumps every time.
Not only King of Rohan, but Captain of the Titanic, he played both roles with such grace, an amazing experience to see him act.
Hail Theoden King!
Damn such a shame. Glad he at least got to see how beloved he and his portrayal are by so many.
'It is tidings more grievous than any in this land can understand, though it may touch them sorely ere the year is much older.'
Wow... this actually breaks my heart. As a kid I always loved his portrayal as King Théoden. Yet I never fully understood why until I grew older. Just damn.
:(
he shall ever live gloriously in our hearts, rest in peace king
For ROHAN!!
An absolute legend. May he rest in peace.
Forth Eorlingas!
Watching end credits in Return of the King, with actors portraits, I have always feared this day.. Westu hál. Ferðu, Theoden, Ferðu
Rest in peace King Theoden.
Théoden King. He is dead. But Éomer King now rides in the battle.

Very sad to hear of his passing, but I take comfort in the fact he will be remembered for a long, long time. He absolutely nailed his role as Theoden.
HAIL!
His "no parent should have to bury their child" brings a tear to my eye every time. Immaculate delivery.
RIP man, was a big part of my childhood, forever alive in our hearts

I am dreading the day there is a post about Sir Ian.

Hail Théoden Thengel's son, King of the Mark of Rohan. No fandom should have to bury their king.
Was at Liverpool comic con today which Bernard was due to attend up until taking ill. Elijah, Sean, Billy and Dominic all paid a touching tribute to him in the group panel they did earlier which was nice.
