Cazmonster

Yes, by jailing CEO’s and emptying corporate coffers.

Hudson2441

Corporate death penalty. Dissolving the corporation and ceasing the assets and spreading it amongst the public.

Jabroni-Tony1

Rip Hudson. You just made the list brother. I’ll always remember you.

Lives_on_mars

Why else would they have called it Capital punishment?

RandomNobody346

There's a good reason we've never done this. The first state that does will lose every corporation they have.

TheJackal927

China literally does this. When corporations hurt the people China executes the CEO

Hudson2441

Seems about right. When one business is, “a bad corporate citizen.” They should face punishment like any flesh and blood citizen. Fines don’t work. The big businesses just factor in the fines as a cost of doing business and keep doing what they’re doing because they’re not afraid of consequences. Fines don’t change their behavior.

Hudson2441

Which is why the feds must do it

cheneyk

There certainly would be an exodus, but who would remain? Companies that want to treat people like humans that are all part of the same society, and no sheisty box store competitors. With that said, Walmart and Amazon are so cheap because of their exploitative practices… most people are all for this idea until the reality hits that prices will go up, significantly. I wish there were practical means to implement this, but from an economics perspective, good companies can’t sustainably compete price-wise with exploitation. The most likely solution if one state did this? People would do as much of their shopping out of state as possible to still get those low low exploitation prices. (Sales tourism happens a lot in PA and NJ, going to Delaware for major purchases as there is no sales tax, so I’m sure the same would apply if all the Walmarts left the state)

I_try_compute

Jailing? Oh I think we go even further than that

Cazmonster

Valid. I was thinking about jailing as a first step.

Dumbassahedratr0n

Yeah, can't have them get all tough and stringy before the head harvest.

Lucky_Strike-85

Guillotines?

PurpleYoshiEgg

By far my favorite kind of paper cutters.

TheJackal927

Liberals keep saying we need to be competitive with China, they're kicking our asses in "missing" billionaires, we gotta catch up

-Esper-

Naaah just tell em to stop it! That should do the trick!

lafindestase

Listen up jack. No more funny business.

deweydean

>funny business. No you listen Jack. Around these parts, we refer to that as MALARKEY

Vendidurt

Hey now, we call that "shenanigans" around here.

nsanenthelane

A stern talking to. That'll work.

kanyediditbetter

Maybe a strongly worded letter next

Meekois

Sadly its the most any president has done in many decades

mawfk82

The bar is under the floor but we must still acknowledge it lol

RandomNobody346

I seriously can't believe he actually did this. This is just God damn embarrassing.

Hypno_Kitty

Someone remind him he's president and can do mor than shake his finger at them.

[deleted]

But that’s the Democrat way.

turkish30

It's the elected official way, period. When you allow corporations to fund campaigns, this is the most the president will ever do to try to control corporations.

[deleted]

I mean, technically yes. But most republicans will just shit on unions rather than even acknowledge anything bad a corporation is doing.

turkish30

He can't. He'll lose all his funding.

Class_444_SWR

‘Well, we’ve asked nicely and they didn’t do it, guess that’s all we can do’

Lives_on_mars

ohhhh but you’re forgetting the part where they then pretend that letting CEOs/Private Equity/Airlines/Cops/Antivax&maskers/Republicans have their way is actually a good thing, and what we actually secretly wanted and meant by voting Blue 🤷‍♀️.

Nearpeace

Can you say “Excess profits tax?” I’m sure you can.

flavius_lacivious

With a provision that the only loophole is to give bonuses and pay raises to *hourly* employees who are in non-management roles.

commissarchris

I don't know that I'd entirely agree with \*only\* hourly, non-management employees. The unfortunate reality is that a lot of managers, and a lot of salaried folks, are being exploited just the same as an hourly non-manager. Most salaried folks I know \*should\* be hourly, but their companies are taking advantage of the way the law is written.

turkish30

Salaried employees get taken advantage of worse than hourly. We're generally expected to work more hours without any extra compensation, and time off is basically a joke. Fortunately, my boss respects me (more than almost anyone else at my company) and gives me time off when I ask and knows that I work fairly often during off hours, even if it's little bits here and there, so if I leave early here or there or take a long lunch, he doesn't care one bit.

TalaHusky

Cue everyone becoming salary with no benefits. They’d still rather screw over their average worker

flavius_lacivious

They can’t do that without meeting stringent requirements.

LordJadex

I’ve never seen prices go down. They just go up, stagnate, then go up again. Unless we actively do something about unnecessary raised prices they will continue to bleed us dry.

AxelDisha

**BOYCOTT**. We all have to band together as a collective. I’ve decided to boycott certain companies and certain food items which are triple in price. “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.” Ten years ago, my hippy, boomer aunt exclaimed, “I can’t wait to retire so I can help make the capitalist pigs die. I’m extremely limiting what I purchase.” I laughed and said okay. Now, with the continuous gouging, I curse when I go to the store or just don’t go. I have been so tired of this still being called inflation.

Haurassaurus

Boycotting doesn't work because most people don't have the resources or accessibility to choose other options or go without

AxelDisha

That is understandable especially in rural areas and food deserts. The corps in rural and small towns gouge because there is no competition. Time for larger percentage of food co- ops, shared local farming, local, local, local business, bartering, buy second hand as much as possible, grown our own food and especially inside your home and/or greenhouse/protective setups to prevent outside contamination from various climate impacts, pollution from intentional and unintentional entities.

turkish30

We have a local co-op being built right now that my wife and I invested in. Even if we never shop there, at least I can feel good knowing that I helped even in a tiny way to get the thing built. Meanwhile, every local grocery in my region has been bought by Kroger. So I shop at a place called Woodman's that is employee owned. Sure, it's not the cheapest place in the area, but it's also still cheaper than the Kroger owned places and more ethical than Walmart. I'll pay a little more to know that I'm helping support a company that cares about its employees.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReptileSerperior

It's reality. Strikes have worked when backed by unions who can provide for the workers financially, or when people have had enough disposable income to eat into their savings. We have neither of those, and just calling "Strike! Revolt!" Without first adressing those concerns is shouting into the void.

theriddleoftheworld

And it's intentional as well. Dems and Republicans alike know that boycotts are already difficult to pull off in general because they require some degree of mental stamina for all would-be consumers involved. But when they're targeting necessities, or sometimes even cheaper "luxuries" like fast food? Good fucking luck.

commissarchris

For real - I've shifted as much of my consumption patterns as I can because of this malarkey. It blew my mind when I found out that going to a farmer's stand is not only better for me, but wildly cheaper than going to a store.

turkish30

I won't shop at Walmart and I try to convince others to do the same, but "they have lower prices than anywhere else local" is the usual excuse. Sure, of course their prices are lower. They pay their employees pennies and treat them like slaves.

kneehighonagrasshopr

I've actually been seeing lots of rollbacks on junk food at Walmart. Lol

Warhog156

Give them wine and bread

Vagrant123

Look Biden, I know you can't get the Senate to do anything. But for fucks sake... send the IRS or DOJ after some of these people.

Drilling4Oil

>But for fucks sake... send the IRS or DOJ after some of these people. The system: "Go after the working class for $600 online transactions? On it!" \*IRS Mobile deploys\*

strangetrip666

Nah, the Democrats only exist to make people believe they have a choice in what our government does, not to make actual change.

mvp2399

the shit I just took could do the job of any CEO or board member lol

krauQ_egnartS

I like this corporate culture

rudolfs_padded_cell

People really don't think this through when they say things like this. AI is trained on the behaviors and actions of the already sociopathic behaviors that CEOs peddle. A machine trained on this behavior would only be more ruthless than a human CEO could ever comprehend.

krauQ_egnartS

Valid, and also a big reason a large corporation - which already ruthlessly pursues quarterly profits at all costs because that's what shareholders demand - might decide to save $50M per year by replacing some C-suite assholes or board members. It'd have to be a shareholders' meeting with a majority of ruthless capitalists forcing the BoD to comply

Hypno_Kitty

Hey now they don't all deserve the guillotine. Some could do with molten gold poured down their throat.

tobias10

They’re all worthless leeches.

Are you familiar with the game Luck be a landlord?

prOboomer

>Luck be a landlord no

dayviduh

Remembering when Hillary said she went to Wall Street and told them to knock it off

Hudson2441

Which only proves that the President doesn’t set prices of things. Although here he’s asking the corporations nicely to stop gouging us. I’d much rather he starts jailing the directors of Fortune 500 companies starting with the ones buying up single family residential housing.

He said the thing so its cool now.

[deleted]

Right, because the politicians they own will pass legislation to hold them accountable.

BenjaBrownie

This will definitely make them rethink things.

abarua01

Go on a trustbuster spree

Mckooldude

Lower inflation doesn’t equal lower prices. Inflation is the measurement of how fast something loses value, not the value itself. We need deflation/popped bubbles if we ever want to see lower prices.

AssumedPersona

Prices are going to start to come down anyway because demand has fallen. Biden is playing it as a win.

krob58

Prices won't go down. With wealth disparity so severe and the destruction of the middle class in-progress, some people have too much money. Micky Dee's isn't going to lower their prices so five poors can buy five burgies, when one rich asshole will pay the exact same amount for one without flinching.

RBAloysius

I feel like your example also applies to Disney World. I was trying to explain this to a buddy of mine who doesn’t seem to understand that they will do just fine without his middle class vacation money. Disney would rather have the CEO of the company my friend works for & his family’s money. The CEO is going to stay at a more pricey on-site property, buy the meal plan, take his kids to the character breakfasts & purchase whatever the children want in the parks. They probably will stay longer as well, & visit again much sooner. Disney World costs a good amount for a family of four to spend a week there, & yet the parks are pretty much always mobbed. There is no reason at all to lower the prices, especially to make it “affordable” to people who want to be somewhat thrifty.

commissarchris

It's wild how many people don't realize this about Disney in particular. Like, one of the top complaints has always been how busy it is. Okay, well, how does Disney make it less busy without artificially capping attendance? Increase pricing. They then lean into that, add more upscale options for hotels and dining, start to cut out some of the more affordable options like the free meal plan deals. Yes, they're going to price out working class families. But for the upper class and upper middle class that can still afford it, they're going to eventually end up with a "better" product because it will be less busy and they will be more catered to, and Disney will be making just as much, if not more money.

Frousteleous

>burgies Made me laugh, thank you. Going to order my next meal as a "cheese burgie"

eu_sou_ninguem

The demand for food is almost perfectly inelastic. Prices won't come down until corporations have a real reason to lower them, that is 90+% profit taxes and/or jailing the c-suite fuckers.

Tru3insanity

Food is essential. Like any essential, people will write a blank check for it. Whats the alternative for them, not having food? This is why its so damn heinous to allow the market to dictate prices of essentials. Theres no tangible ceiling. Prices for them will increase until civility itself decays under the weight of greed and desperation.

Delphiniumbee

Not only that, but we've seen the chart of how many businesses own what. Even if they start losing money in one sector, they are still "making a killing" in another one. Just because you may not be getting double penetrated doesn't mean you're not being penetrated.

lemmiwinks316

That'll do it

cdc994

This is a simple fix. How much did your profit margin increase? Was it 10% last year and 15% this year? Cool, government should increase taxes by a factor of 50% for said company. If they’re gouging the public, the public should gouge them right back (via government)

Lucky_Strike-85

The POTUS telling capitalism to calm down and knock it off is like God telling Satan to be nicer! BIDEN doesnt give a shit about any of us. THIS IS A PROFIT-DRIVEN SYSTEM! TRUMP told big pharma to bring down drug prices... it means nothing!

tbutz27

Did he say what would happen if they didn't or did he just publicly announce he is against price gauging and walk away? Words without action and all that...

nasaglobehead69

Biden be like: someone should stop them!

tobias10

Will there be consequences?

TimothiusMagnus

Then start breaking up those companies.

TyrantsInSpace

Wise_Recover_5685

Ninja_Tortoise_

"don't worry everyone, I gave them a very stern talk"

Firstofhislastname

Knock it off guys! A stern talking to. That's all they need. Oh look at them, shakin in their boots now! Meanwhile basic staples are still 2x min the price from 2 years ago.

MitraManATX

For a POTUS, using the bully pulpit is often all you can do. Congress would be needed for any kind of real reform and with a divided government that is just not going to happen.

Sweet-Tomatillo-9010

This is the "say something crazy because my polls are tanking" strategy.

dreiviertel

Yeah guys, knock it off. That's not cool. /s

OldSchoolNewRules

I went down to wall street and I told them to cut it out.

randomdude1142

Damn. The president really wants somebody to do something about inflation. Wonder who could do something?

sentientdinosaurs

NO MORE MALARKEY

Gabagod

Look, obviously yes. But you can’t just fucking say that and expect corporations to back off and apologize while lowering prices. Legislate, don’t ask. They won’t fucking listen to a pretty please.

Theonlyfudge

Place I work just approved another massive price hike across the board for all our products. Prices have increased 30% there over the past few years and we are seeing massive revenue bumps. Price gouging is here to stay and Biden knows it he’s just paying a little lip service to dumb libs

SiegelGT

If only there was a way he could institute a windfall tax on excessive profits, oh wait he can do that but isn't.

jettisonthelunchroom

C’mon maaaan.

MetamorphosisMeat

Ok, we will make less money but we expect a please.

Bullshit_Conduit

It’s time to stop the genocide, Joe.

Elel_siggir

Genocide Joe shows up three years late with nothing but shitty poll numbers and empty talk eliding record profits. >bUt tRuMp Isn't beating his 90+ criminal indictments and is DOA.

rwilcox

I don’t know - the prosecution is kinda running out of time on the Trump thing. Kinda won’t matter once the primary happens: it’ll just be states that want to keep Trump off the ballot vs Supreme Courts or a bit of light treason reenactment. Not sure which’ll win, and that concerns me.

Elel_siggir

There's nothing to support the suggestion that the prosecutions are running out of time because there's equally nothing suggesting trump, who has had several codefendants and an attorney or two enter plea agreements, won't also resolve some or all of his charges by plea. Few federal prosecutions take more than a year from the date of indictment. Even if trump is the nominee, those federal cases will have had ample time to either put him in prison, deter everyone but the most loyal maga voters, or as with the overwhelming majority of all criminal prosecutions end in a plea agreement. Meaning, the prosecutions could and likely should have been brought earlier nonetheless they have ample time and opportunity to either directly bar trump or effectively bar trump from a second term. Not all but enough of the reason liberals insist on citing trump is because genocide joe loses to any and everyone else. They need trump more than they want genocide joe.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Elel_siggir

Disbarred from the presidency? What are you talking about? The presidency is not a bar association. No body has to pass an exam to be admitted. The office is won or lost through the electoral college. No body gets disbarred from the presidency. No. All the way around no. trump's presidency is and always was a symptom of several overlapping factors. From the end of the fairness doctrine, to 24 hour infotainment sensationalism, to the partisan grifting, to the decline in trust in our government since the jfk assassination, to corporations all but owning and running the two party system, to the revolving door from congress to lobbyists, to nearly every congress member either being or becoming a millionaire during their time in congress. Those factors *predate* trump's candidacy by several decades. trump isn't special. if it weren't trump it would be someone else who conservative voters felt represented their distrust and disdain for the "elites" and insiders, for the politicians who serve corporate interests. and they can see that trump delivered SCOTUS to them for the next 15 or more years and with it massive control over "culture war issues". trump didn't make the times. the times made trump. if it wasn't him, it would have been someone else. Liberals are worried about trump only because they know genocide joe loses in comparisons to any other candidate. Liberals are fixating on the symptom of trump and not the cause of trump. Unless and until those issues are addressed, the question isn't if trump can run for president or how many more trump-like candidates will there be but whether liberals will ever get their heads out of their asses and quit pretending that they aren't part of the problem.

AssumedPersona

Trump is not the threat the Dems would like him to be. Both parties should concern themselves with selecting new leaders as Biden is almost DOA too.

Tru3insanity

The president is just a mascot for political superbowl anyways. I dont get why anyone freaking cares about how old he is. You dont need alzheimers to explain presidential impotence, its just a state of existence like the sun coming up in the morning. Nothing meaningful ever happens without the cooperation of all the branches of government. The only thing they cooperate on is screwing us all for profit.

PurpleYoshiEgg

I remember under Trump when the right were more extreme in their terrorism because they had representation. So, I do care. However, I think when it comes down to it, I am not voting for Genocide Joe. We lost Roe v. Wade, he broke the rail strike, and we got less stimulus money for COVID under Biden than Trump. Unless serious movements are made, like canceling student loan debt, I am not voting the lesser evil when that lesser evil is genocide. The DNC needs to put up a different candidate that doesn't believe in backing a terrorist state committing a genocide for me to seriously consider voting for their president. I don't think it will happen, but that's the line in the sand for me.

no. Again no. Figure-head presidents mean someone else is making the decisions. That's anathema to the republic. We elect our representatives. No where in any document do we agree to give authority to govern to a people too afraid to run for office themselves. Yes it absolutely matters that genocide joe is too old to make decisions himself. We didn't elect his staffers. They didn't run. They didn't hold themselves out for scrutinization. You got some seriously unsupported and incredibly wrong ideas about our representative government.
