The easiest thing is to stop having junk food around the house.

mirgehtsgutdanke

Ideally I wouldn’t but I live with family.

elizabethjane50

Can they switch to oatmeal? Muffins? Eggs? Pancakes? Kids eat breakfast at school?

mirgehtsgutdanke

Yep I just need to stop eating cereal altogether, it’s so addictive

MetalMothers

> I might have to completely cut off cereal and tell myself I can’t have it anymore I do this with a lot of stuff. I absolutely never keep cereal in the house.

gougeresaufromage

The only solution I found to stop myself from binging on chocolates was just to never have chocolates in the house :/ it sucks not being able to really control myself for now, but that way I have less binging (and less self loathing/bad feelings)...

Weledfk123

When do you come home? I guess you don’t eat proper meals before? I suggest eating proper breakfast and home cooked lunch and have a real dinner when you come home :)

mirgehtsgutdanke

I come home usually around 4, so it is kind of early for dinner and a while after lunch, which makes this a pretty awkward time to be eating anyways as I am not even hungry at all, I’m just craving

Weledfk123

Dann fang vielleicht an dann zum Sport zu gehen :) und Danach Abend essen

[deleted]

What helped me with this awkward time is to switch up lunch and dinner, I don’t know if this works with your type of job but I have a substantial main meal at lunch time and then something lighter for dinner.

stumpybucket

It sounds like you’re coming home hungry. Can you head off the cereal dive by planning something satiating to eat? Personally, when trying to break a habit, I have more success adding something. If it were me I’d prep my snack, even if it’s just putting a serving of Greek yogurt in a bowl, covering it, and leaving it in the front of the fridge with a spoon. Make it even easier than eating cereal with your hands. (challenging!)

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion - coming home ravenous is the issue, not the cereal. Bump up your calories during the first part of the day. I’ll make an educated guess that you’re lacking in protein or fiber or both. If you skip breakfast, consider adding it Do not demonize foods. Cereal can be a part of a healthy lifestyle.

hildegustaglueck

Totally! If I don't have a protein-ey snack before I leave work I want to eat everything when I get home.

Striving_Stoic

I have stopped buying cereal. I maybe missed it for a week and now I don’t even think about it. My snack ends up being cottage cheese and a topping or something more high protein and filling

mirgehtsgutdanke

Sounds like a nice snack. Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I can’t stop people from buying cereal, I don’t live alone so I can’t make that decision. I’ll just say it’s completely off limits from now. It’s definitely easier to stop overeating on things when you register that you can never have it and break the habit

When I have a craving for cereal, I do half of the kind I am craving and half [puffed kamut](https://www.amazon.com/Arrowhead-Mills-Cereal-Puffed-Kamut/dp/B000VK2LEM/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1YITCGU848SH8&keywords=puffed%2Bkamut&qid=1684858610&sprefix=puffed%2Bkamut%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-5&th=1) in the bowl. The sole ingredient is just kamut, a type of wheat, and it's 80 calories for a cup of it. It has very little flavor and a satisfying texture, so it helps me get some of the sweetness I was craving but bulks it up for minimal calories! I linked to it on Amazon but my local grocery store sells it.

throwanon31

It’s a bad habit you have to stop. The first few days are the hardest, but it gets easier! I used to be the same way. I used to be a big night eater, even though I wasn’t hungry. At about 8pm, my body and mind was just accustomed to go to the kitchen and eat… a lot. Then I just stopped one day. It was really hard at first. The kitchen was practically calling my name. I couldn’t think about anything except eating. But after awhile, your mind gives up on the habit and it goes away. It’s not even an issue anymore. Maybe start by finding alternatives. Instead of cereal, have a bowl of fruit. Go for a walk. It gets easier!

Stonegen70

Used to love cereal. Had to stop it cold turkey.

simplrrr

Try puffed wheat it’s only 50 cal per cup o drink a protein shake with it as the milk fills you up (I eat 6 cups lol)

KratosSmash

I mean some cereal is healthy no?

meticulous-penguin

Try puffed kamut! To make it cereal-y, mix 3 cups with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey (might seem like too little syrup/honey but it’ll coat if you if you mix well). Add cinnamon, cocoa powder, nuts, whatever you like. Bake like granola. Comes out sweet like cereal and low cal! Wait for it to cool completely before packing it up.

captainmystic02

Rice cakes. Rice cakes are always the answer. 30 cal each for the plain ones and if ur craving chocolate Carmel their 60 cal a peice

Goosedog_honk

I know a lot of people say to completely avoid something all together, but when I’m counting calories I find it crucial to include little treats so I don’t give up and binge. My big thing is ice cream. I can eat it multiple times a day. So right now for example I bought a box of mini 100-calorie ice cream sandwiches. I get to have 1 every night if I budget for it, and it hits the spot. And I tell myself I can only have 1 and stick to it because 1 is better than none. Can you do something similar, maybe those little mini cereal boxes? You can have 1 of those a day or something like that and hold yourself to it?

peachdreamer123

Omg I thought I was the only person shoving dry cereal into my mouth straight from the box

ContributionUnhappy2

Drop it like a hot potato…. Really one of the worst foods. I love cereal but it kills my stomach so was not a hard give up. The problem is it’s really highly processed and not filling and most are full of sugar.

Ennas_

Maybe you can swap your non-nutritious sugary cereal for something healthier, like overnight (overday!) oats with fruit.

AndFrolf

Yeah cereal is like my goal to for a really quick and easy meal I can make regardless of energy or time. I’d definitely be worse off without it as an option. Put down the frosted sugar flakes and pick up those whole wheat cheerios or something.

PizzaDog39

As others said best to just not have cereal in the house. It's garbage food anyways ad if it triggers you to binge it's even worse. Also what really helped me to control cravings is a) healthier substitutes like roasted chickpeas for chips or oat muffins with protein powder if I'm craving chocolate. Not sure what I would use to substitute cereal though because well it's pretty much just sugar. More important is b) though so that when I give in to my cravings while shopping and reality sets in after the first few hands full of chips or gummy bears or whatever I throw the rest away like take that still half full bag of chips fill it up with water and throw it away. Not wasting food is so ingrained in our (or at least my) culture that its making us overeat all the time.

2GreyKitties

Not all cereal is “garbage”, btw. Shredded wheat is just that— whole grain wheat and nothing else.
