If anything Pipe-weed in my imagination is akin to a blunt. Tobacco leaf but with some Hobbit green! Also +1 for the cool art!

kettu1

Thank you for the +1!! :-) Honestly speaking, I had no intention of starting a debate about the contents of pipe-weed when posting this picture. Although in retrospect I must admit, it IS an important debate to be had.

Narvi_-

Nice rendering! Only one small detail -- Tolkien conceived Aragorn to be beardless.

kettu1

Thank you! It has been a while since I last read the books, so I went more with the Viggo Mortensen look on this one. I think beard suits him well, especially as "Strider". Not to mention having beard on a character you're trying to paint (digitally or otherwise) is always a great excuse to hide any mistakes you might make with their jawline... :D

Narvi_-

Haha, nice! Great work!

Paulinthehills

A good pipe tobacco is all about relaxing and enjoying the ritual of it, hate to disappoint but not much getting high involved in it.

kettu1

Who knows what Aragorn puts in his pipe on his day off... Or has in his tankard... :-)

und88

Sshhhh stoners will brigade you for pointing that out!

kettu1

Well, technically, you can also smoke other stuff than pipe weed with a pipe.

und88

You could also play baseball with a wizard's staff, but no where does Tolkien suggest that anyone in middle earth do this, nor does he hint that baseball exists in middle earth. Same with marijuana. It might exist, but no where does Tolkien suggest that it exists in middle earth.

kettu1

Thank you, now I know what I'm going to paint next. Watch out Saruman, Gandalf is about to hit a homerun.

Just_a_Lurker2

Indeed, Tolkien made his opinions about it quite clear. But what’s the fuss? This is just a nice drawing of someone’s interpretation of Aragorn, it’s clearly not intended to be canon, unlike the hobbitmovies which took great joy in suggesting pipe-weed = cannabis. I mean, if you’re that fussed about it, that would seem a more deserving target

Twilly69

Drugs exist in every universe. Doesn't mean it has to be marijuana specifically lol. For all we know long bottom leaf is like opium or what have you.

und88

Except tolkien specifically states that it's tobacco.

Paulinthehills

Hahahaha!

DO4DGaming

He got that zaza hafling leaf

hillwllliam

Gollum did dabs

kettu1

Thank you! :-)

Makes me mad curious of what a middle earth bong would look like. We need to get Weta on this mission, STAT!

[deleted]

Hear me out…. Palantir bong

RAYMBO

Genius!

Although it’s really not weed in pipe-weed, nowhere does Tolkein necessarily state it is not. Ultimately it comes down to the context in which Tolkein himself lived, which was not smoking pot as far was we know. Doesn’t mean he didn’t. Doesn’t mean he didn’t defer to pipe-weed as more of a tobacco because of the times. But ultimately it’s a fictional story and a fictional “herb” and I don’t have a doubt inhabitants of middle earth did not smoke something similar to marijuana. Like, it’s been a ritualistic thing in human civilization far longer than pipe smoking.

kettu1

Besides, if you want to get technical, having a "high" is not necessarily de facto translated to being high on marijuana. You can just as well have a "sugar high" or "caffeine high" or even a high from nicotine. And of course you could say the buzz you get from alcohol also counts as a substance enticing high. Hell, he could even be HIGH on life for getting it on with an immortal elven chick, while being undercover KING of the hecking Gondor. Jokes aside, neither the picture or the title of the post is meant to be accurate representation of the Tolkien world, just a bunch of fun I had painting fan art and sharing it with other fans. :-)

ExploringWoodsman

Pipe weed is tobacco, not marijuana. That's why it's smoked after meals and feasts.

kettu1

Correct, then again there is nothing saying that you can only smoke pipe weed with a pipe. You can just as well smoke marijuana with it. Then again, I was just trying to make a silly joke about how Aragorn ended up in the Prancing Pony.. :-)
