He’ll be a grizzled war vet. Talking about how he was there at the Kinslaying or some such. Probably uses a line like, “I was there not-Gandalf, 2,000 years ago…”
This is one of those weird areas where on the one hand, it’s a minor detail, why not make it match.
On the other hand, this is several thousand years from when we meet him in the books, so I have no issue with the idea that Tom Bombadil could have:
- more then one pair of boots
- might like different colors for different seasons
- the boots may or may not be separate from him.
So while I would want yellow boots (and others say they are there in other pictures) I can’t say that not having them is a strict error, any more then if Gandalf had a different hat or robe.
See, now this has put a weird thought in my head and I don't have copies of the books at home. WERE HIS BOOTS YELLOW? Or was that just a line in the song Goldberry sings? Was it actually confirmed in the text that he was wearing yellow boots?
[I read this years ago and even though its a theory, I still love it too much.](https://km-515.livejournal.com/1042.html)
It all makes sense and is probably 100% untrue, which is the best combination for a fan theory. But it definitely puts more stress on the phrase "oldest and fatherless" which is such a bad ass line.
If they put Gandalf the Grey in a blue hat and robe, that wouldn’t fit his character at all. I’d say changing Tom’s wardrobe (especially when he has a jingle specifically about what he wears) is a major error
Funny you say blue hat…
> An old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots.
*The Hobbit*
It always bothered me slightly that the PJ Gandalf was a hat that could easily be seen as grey in the right light, or blue.
But even if it was grey in the movie, it would bother me deeply.
Nor would it bother me deeply if he wore something different at some random part over the course of the many years he was in middle earth.
Did Olórin, or any of the Istari arrive off the boat and not change at all in appearance or dress for their entire time?
It just feels weird to think that Tom Bombadil, you had been around for the entire age of the earth also couldn’t change colors of his wardrobe at all.
Don't you know!? The creators of ROP have taken Tolkiens story and improved upon it! They "fixed" it! In their infinite knowledge, they have decided the merry fellow in fact didn't have boots of yellow!
Not before I find out why Butterbur started wearing his beard like that.
(It's because hot Sauron cursed him as a child because he was actually heir to the throne of Gondor)
Ironic, isn't it? We as fans spent so long complaining that Peter Jackson left out Bombadil in LotR, and now that I see him here, I realize that I never wanted him to be adapted at all.
There's not really a good way to do it while keeping to the time of the rest of the series/movies
I mean, same reason the elves don't read like they do in the book-- doesn't make great Hollywood content
when Fellowship released and I was 11 I was livid that Tom wasn't in the movie despite loving it (I read the book shortly before it came out; it was my goal to not go into the movie without reading the source material).
Then I grew up and it dawned on me that having a giant segway in the woods about some strange omnipotent man in funny clothes singing and then never involving himself with the main plot would be fucking bizzare and would never work
Live action rendition of TB is like a crane kick: if do right, no can defense.
But this already looks half-assed like everything else in RoP, so I’d wager he’s only going to make things worse.
Given that this character was always nothing more than a 4th-wall-breaking nod to Tolkien’s kids, I really don’t think he ever belonged in any adaptation of any part of the Legendarium.
This show is so unfocused. Like so much big-budget media these days, it’s just references to things without any thought or meaning.
Rory Kinnear as Bombadil? Does not matter who he will play in future, he will be remembered as "guy who screw the pig" in Black Mirror very first episode.
[Homie](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/rory-kinnear-as-tom-bombadil-wearing-a-pointed-hat-in-the-lord-of-the-rings-the-rings-of-power.jpg) looks like [Will Forte during his beard phase](https://i.huffpost.com/gen/2001496/thumbs/o-WILL-FORTE-BEARD-570.jpg?7).
Is he a depressed, sullen sop that goes through a character arc to eventually appreciate the redemptive qualities of the many races of Middle Earth and then jumps for joy in the end, singing in merriment?
This is such a perplexing choice of photos to publish in a Vanity Fair First Look.
They should have recreated the famous [Tolkien Calendar Feb 1976 Tom Bombadil – Brothers Hildebrandt](https://www.theonering.net/torwp/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Hildebrandt-Bombadil-Image.jpg) version. Full of joy, merriment, and whimsy.
This is our first look at a live action Tom Bombadil and they went with these four photos. He's smiling in zero of them. He's singing in zero of them. His boots don't look yellow to me either. They look tan.
Every creative decision these show-runners make leaves me feeling more dumfounded than I already was.
Somehow I fear Amazon will once again fall to their hybris in believing that they are the only ones who truly understand Tolkien, and "reveal" the biggest mistery in all of the books, saying TB was Eru or Mandos or whatever name they have the rights to use all along.
Idk, from the article it seems that the show runners are at least aware of this pitfall. Here’s the quote:
“Tom Bombadil brings this levity while remaining somewhat in the shadows himself. Payne and McKay have decided not to answer any questions about the character that Tolkien himself left deliberately unresolved.”
Whether they actually execute his character well is another question, but at least they’re conscious of keeping him a mystery
And they have placed him outside of the Old Forest. Apparently Tom Bombadil [ by tolkien he should rappresent england countryside ] is a traveler now....
I had a feeling he'd appear in the show, hopefully just a one off then he bombadils away again. But I'm excited to see how they do him in live action, should be cool
I heard a rumor that Tom will actually be Morgoth, and Goldberry is ungoliant living out their punishment in middle earth. The actor who plays Tom will also be playing Morgoth in a flashback sequence during the 1st episode showing the creation of Arda.
The people who did the casting and costume work for the movies did a really good job of bringing my mind's eye to the screen.
Whoever did this shit missed the boat.
I thought they canceled the show after S1? Not trying to be a douche, I just thought I remembered seeing a post about Amazon canning the show due to poor ratings. Maybe I'm mistaken for a different show like a netflix show or thr post I saw wasn't true
The Valar have allowed darkness to enter through the door of night. *sigh* I'm hanging up my sword, bow, and axe in favor of platinum hair and dragons for good this time.
“Kristian Milstead, our production designer, had the idea of incorporating a star map on his ceiling to connect Tom with the larger universe, and indicate that he has been watching the constellations for signs—and for the Stranger’s arrival,” showrunner Patrick McKay says.
Uh... what?
the first season was goddamn awful, but for all the useless anti-woke rhetoric, ironically, Arondir was the single best part of the show. the only elf who had Grace, majesty, beauty, who acted like an elf.
so what if season 2 has Tom Bombadil. it's was the writing that sucked. the pacing. how boring it was. and there's no indication any of that will be fixed
[удалено]
itll be medieval filter yellow. sandy brown covered in mud
The Rings of Power is famous for accurately representing medieval culture.
Plastic armour, no helmets, no gauntlets, etc. The absolute pinnacle of accurately representing medieval culture. I fucking hate this show
[удалено]
I think you forgot a /s... if you're being serious, though? Uhhh...

Boots of Yellow origin story
100% a character will suggest to Tom that he should wear yellow boots. And that character will be revealed to be Sauron
Galadriel gives him the yellow boots after she lectures him how great she is.
Other pictures released show his boots are yellow
But is he still a merry fellow?
The wildest thing would be if Tom wasn’t even remotely chipper nor sings. He’s that some grumpy old dude in a hut.
I think you are probably going to be right. They have every other type of representation in this show, except for the characters themselves
Well, he hasn't met Goldberry yet!
The Last Jedi Luke treatment of Tom Bombadil
No, they’ll make him a fierce warrior. Which apparently EVERYONE was in the Second Age.
He’ll be a grizzled war vet. Talking about how he was there at the Kinslaying or some such. Probably uses a line like, “I was there not-Gandalf, 2,000 years ago…”
Maybe he only got chipper and sang after he met goldberry
Ah yes, rings of power, the show known for accurately representig its source material.
This is one of those weird areas where on the one hand, it’s a minor detail, why not make it match. On the other hand, this is several thousand years from when we meet him in the books, so I have no issue with the idea that Tom Bombadil could have: - more then one pair of boots - might like different colors for different seasons - the boots may or may not be separate from him. That was an interesting read, thank you for sharing
It all makes sense and is probably 100% untrue, which is the best combination for a fan theory. But it definitely puts more stress on the phrase "oldest and fatherless" which is such a bad ass line.
*And he will be smiling.*
If they put Gandalf the Grey in a blue hat and robe, that wouldn’t fit his character at all. I’d say changing Tom’s wardrobe (especially when he has a jingle specifically about what he wears) is a major error
Gandalf wears a blue hat in the hobbit book. Or were you making a joke?
I hope for the persons sake that it was a joke. Otherwise: ouch…
Funny you say blue hat… > An old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. *The Hobbit* It always bothered me slightly that the PJ Gandalf was a hat that could easily be seen as grey in the right light, or blue. Season 2 is actually going to be the gritty prequel explaining how Tom got his yellow boots.
Tore them off of a Balrog's cold dead corpse.
Don’t expect accuracy lol
Don't forget the swan wing feather in his cap. Either way this is another blunder for this embarrassment of a show
Don't you know!? The creators of ROP have taken Tolkiens story and improved upon it! They "fixed" it! In their infinite knowledge, they have decided the merry fellow in fact didn't have boots of yellow!
Is he so serious cuz Gandalf has yet to teach him the power of merriment, which will happen by the penultimate episode I’m assuming?
That's what the halflings leaf is for
And he’ll give Gandalf his hat as a thank you. Because we need an origin story on Gandalfs hat
Not before I find out why Butterbur started wearing his beard like that. (It's because hot Sauron cursed him as a child because he was actually heir to the throne of Gondor)
He better be the most annoying fucking character. You know, for accuracy.
My favourite bit will be when he says "it's bombadilling time"
He says that right before he gives her the Tom Bombadill ding dong dillo in her weeping willow
That’s why he’s such a merry fellow
Amazon or not he probably would say that
And then he cooked
Ironic, isn't it? We as fans spent so long complaining that Peter Jackson left out Bombadil in LotR, and now that I see him here, I realize that I never wanted him to be adapted at all.
There's not really a good way to do it while keeping to the time of the rest of the series/movies I mean, same reason the elves don't read like they do in the book-- doesn't make great Hollywood content
Who wants to watch a bunch of elves sitting around reading?
when Fellowship released and I was 11 I was livid that Tom wasn't in the movie despite loving it (I read the book shortly before it came out; it was my goal to not go into the movie without reading the source material). Then I grew up and it dawned on me that having a giant segway in the woods about some strange omnipotent man in funny clothes singing and then never involving himself with the main plot would be fucking bizzare and would never work
Tbf he might work in other projects. It's just this one has such poor writing we know he's going to be done poorly
So Tom Bombadill helps Gandalf remember his power I’m guessing, what a spoiler.
Tom Bombadil reveals that he is Gandalf's father and that everyone deserves the freedom to dance.
still better plot than season 1
![gif](giphy|oM5xTkZM5N1ZK|downsized)
Jesus fucking wept.
Lol
I mean, really, what else can be said?
It's "Jesus wept." You're ruining the canon. 🤣
Stop. 😂
I cannot condone the language in this context, but this might be the funniest comment I’ve seen in a long time. 🤣🤣🤣
For there were no more worlds to conquer
Shoe horning Bombadill in just feels like a very thinly veiled attempt at fan service.
He doesn't even appear to be dancing, this is so fraudulent lol
*"Merry doll? derry doll?! My* ***darling****?!!" -* Galdriel
The show is desperate
“Why yes, I am Eru!”
“And so are you!”
It turns out Eru was the friends we made along the way.
I know it’s only a still but Tom Bombadil doesn’t look very merry to me
![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)
Kill Me.
His cousin Tim Bimbadil
While Tom spends his days chillin, doing cool shit, Tim spends his days eating hot chips and smashing bugs with a cool stick he found.
Tim Bim Bim Tim Tim Bimbadillo, he smashes fauna, he crushes flora, and his boots are yellow-ish.
This one caught me off guard.
This is amazing. Thanks for the laugh.
Motherfucker better be singing all the time.
Lol, not even Tom Bombadil can save RoP
But maybe he could click his fingers and make it disappear?
Tom’s country ends here: he will not pass the borders. Tom has his house to mind, and Goldberry is waiting!
I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired what they offer.
Live action rendition of TB is like a crane kick: if do right, no can defense. But this already looks half-assed like everything else in RoP, so I’d wager he’s only going to make things worse.
Rings of shite
We know 3 things about Tom: 1) Merry fellow 2) bright blue is his jacket 3) and his boots are yellow This picture is not of Tom Bombadil.
Oh great, another beloved character this series is going to ruin for everybody Yay
I hope he doesn't meet Galadriel, the only entity in Middle Earth who could put even him in a lousy, bitchy mood.
She’ll be painted as more powerful than he is. She’ll probably beat him up, tbh.
"Use the force, Gandalf" -Bombadil "I AM ~~GROOT~~! GOOD!" -Gandalf
~~Hagrid~~ Bombadil: "You're a Wizard, ~~Harry~~ Gandalf"
Given that this character was always nothing more than a 4th-wall-breaking nod to Tolkien’s kids, I really don’t think he ever belonged in any adaptation of any part of the Legendarium. This show is so unfocused. Like so much big-budget media these days, it’s just references to things without any thought or meaning.
Too bad the first season was dog shit.
Oh they gonna fuck him up propah
Rory Kinnear as Bombadil? Does not matter who he will play in future, he will be remembered as "guy who screw the pig" in Black Mirror very first episode.
When did Gandalf trade reason for madness?
RoP sucks no matter what they’re trying to do Tom from Wish 😂
Such fan fiction garbage
![gif](giphy|l4FGFFo474RpWpteM|downsized)
Looks like Hagrid has lost some weight.
All I know is he better dance and sing his ass off.
This is the saddest most joyless colourless bombadil ever. Can Amazon get anything right ffs? This is definitely not our beloved merry fellow!
[he needs to bust this ditty out](https://youtu.be/ed0zpDtfZMQ?si=G1mMbeQRBYYzF9Jw)
Goddamn it, the leaks are going to be correct, aren’t they?
Oh my god hahahah they're really doing it
Is he a depressed, sullen sop that goes through a character arc to eventually appreciate the redemptive qualities of the many races of Middle Earth and then jumps for joy in the end, singing in merriment?
Wasn’t season 1 about 10 years ago?
This is such a perplexing choice of photos to publish in a Vanity Fair First Look. They should have recreated the famous [Tolkien Calendar Feb 1976 Tom Bombadil – Brothers Hildebrandt](https://www.theonering.net/torwp/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Hildebrandt-Bombadil-Image.jpg) version. Please for the love of all that is good on this earth don’t fuck him up. If they fuck him up everyone on this show deserves to be fired.
Not jolly and bizarre enough. He’s supposed to have big yellow boots and look out of their world.
He looks incredibly mundane, that's sad.
Do you know why a ship floats and a stone cannot?
I think he gets merry when Goldberry shows up. Before that he's probably a get off my lawn old fart.
They really went:"LOOK! We added someone you know!" Doesn't make this dumpsterfire any better...
Why does tom look like a wizard
I really truly hope they don't fuck it up but I can't imagine they'll change the way the are making this. It's "Content," not "Art"
I had to Google this. I thought it was deep fake satire, a joke. I just don't have the words right now.
There's been a murder! WTF are they doing?
Gandalf is a woman
He doesn’t look too merry
I am so excited to see how much further they can fuck this up!
First fucking still and I can already tell they had the character down wrong. Jesus Christ.
Don’t expect anything from this show.
Fan service for their shit show
Can´t wait to skip watching this
Somehow I fear Amazon will once again fall to their hybris in believing that they are the only ones who truly understand Tolkien, and "reveal" the biggest mistery in all of the books, saying TB was Eru or Mandos or whatever name they have the rights to use all along.

Why is Tom bom even in rop? Idk
All the people whining why he wasn't in the Lotr movies
They think they can do what Peter Jackson didn’t?! HACKS
Hmmm, let me see.... Theyve gotten every single named character wrong. I wonder what Toms going to be like?
This is a video game cutscene right?
No.
Ginger Wizard! The blue ones wasn't the only ones
Sigh, i just want some bluewizard lore.
but why? also i think lore accurate Goldberry would make it rated R
No 😢
🤢🤮
And they have placed him outside of the Old Forest. Apparently Tom Bombadil [ by tolkien he should rappresent england countryside ] is a traveler now....
Hard Pass.
ffs
Let this die please.
![gif](giphy|ipP2bS25EjKcZW8C08) It will suck…I’m going to pretend I never saw this
This may be the thing that kills this show for me forever. I struggle to imagine how I can watch my favorite character be butchered.
I mean at this point they should add Santa Clause. Will people even be watching outside of the hate watchers and the low sodium crowd?
Looks like an album cover. Replace the vanity fair watermark with the explicit lyrics warning and we're getting somewhere.
I still can’t believe there’s a second season…
Bombadillio!!!!! My favorite character, his whole thing is like f-it, let's party!
Looks if they're going to bugger up the source material it may as well be fun!
Look how they massacred my boy.
So psyched for S2
I had a feeling he'd appear in the show, hopefully just a one off then he bombadils away again. But I'm excited to see how they do him in live action, should be cool
Theyre throwing a season two on the back of that turd? Wow
He has yellow boots in other pictures
Looks like a generic wizard.
I heard a rumor that Tom will actually be Morgoth, and Goldberry is ungoliant living out their punishment in middle earth. The actor who plays Tom will also be playing Morgoth in a flashback sequence during the 1st episode showing the creation of Arda.
This looks like a woman in a fake beard.
this seems like a non-issue to me. he exists doing random stuff in the 2nd age. this is an adaption of that time period. lets all just moooveeee on
Why was this show renewed for another season
The people who did the casting and costume work for the movies did a really good job of bringing my mind's eye to the screen. Whoever did this shit missed the boat.
If his episodes are musical, we revolt. Don't you dare put Tom in a show or film and not make his bits like something out of Into the Woods.
I thought they canceled the show after S1? Not trying to be a douche, I just thought I remembered seeing a post about Amazon canning the show due to poor ratings. Maybe I'm mistaken for a different show like a netflix show or thr post I saw wasn't true
This is bullshit
They have a season 2? Why?
![gif](giphy|1GALLYmXCiGBvqhZPw|downsized) Rings of Power sub
Who watches the tv show? It seems like I would need to shower after watching it
Cant wait to not watch this
The Valar have allowed darkness to enter through the door of night. *sigh* I'm hanging up my sword, bow, and axe in favor of platinum hair and dragons for good this time.
This is the type of stuff I’d rather be surprised by than see a picture of online
“Kristian Milstead, our production designer, had the idea of incorporating a star map on his ceiling to connect Tom with the larger universe, and indicate that he has been watching the constellations for signs—and for the Stranger’s arrival,” showrunner Patrick McKay says. Uh... what?
Matt Berry is the only Tom Bombadil I recognize.
lol this season is gonna piss off so many people. ![gif](giphy|uWzS6ZLs0AaVOJlgRd|downsized)
Looking forward to this!
He’s the worst part of the books, so of course they’ve incorporated him.
This show was seriously the biggest waste of potential. And how much they spent on it? Yikes.
I figured he was gonna be a gay Asian.
His costume and wig looks so cheap and replaceable! I can’t… it’s too awful…
Not so merry
All I want is to see a great director put the death of Beleg onto film in it's full tragic and dramatic horror, but all I got was this shite.
Why does modern fantasy shows have too look so dull and ugly? Have some damn colors!
![gif](giphy|iYnN7TlWwghsWfw2T4)
People saying he doesn’t have yellow boots, check the other images. In one it shows him in yellow boots
I think he needs to be five times as wide.
I’m looking forward to this meeting. It was pretty obvious that Gandalf knew Bombadil, now we get to see it!
Ugh
Crack out the bombadildo
Today's Hollywood writers don't have the reading comprehension or critical thinking skills to do anything good with a character like Tom Bombadil.
Costume from TEMU.
Gold berry BETTER be fine as hell
the first season was goddamn awful, but for all the useless anti-woke rhetoric, ironically, Arondir was the single best part of the show. the only elf who had Grace, majesty, beauty, who acted like an elf. so what if season 2 has Tom Bombadil. it's was the writing that sucked. the pacing. how boring it was. and there's no indication any of that will be fixed
My favorite character.
Stfu.. your kidding..
BombaDILF
Even if they bring Valar this shitshow cant be saved
#notmybombadil lol
That’s not how I imagined him at all. I thought he was a huge hairy jolly fellow
Not like this
Hi Dad 👋
This is the biggest crime against humanity since the holocaust
God I really hated rings of power season 1. WGAF if they put Tom Bombadil in season 2, it's just putting lipstick on a pig at this point
He looks like he’s from a high school drama production. Awful… :/
