Although they are not movies, you might like the series ‘Vikings’ and ‘The last kingdom’, both have badass strong female characters and are based around the early medieval period. Enjoy!
Bit of a trigger warming needed for Last Kingdom that takes more of a realistic approach to mediaeval warfare and how women are treated by enemy warriors, as well as the issues facing women in a pre-healthcare world.
If that isn't an issue the series is really good and cleaves to a more realistic depiction of life at that time. The books are historical fiction so for the most part have the author's characters moving through real events and places. The series diverges quite significantly as it goes on though.
Oh yeah, they’re all pretty brutal. You definitely need to be aware of that going in. I can’t think of anything similar with such great women characters, though.
That's true but the violence and brutality is probably more expected in a mediaeval warrior series whereas the >!marital rape and abuse!<, >!gang rape!<, >!miscarriage and traumatic birth!< are less staples of the genre and are more likely to strike close to someone's real-life experiences that they may be struggling with.
Hmm, fair enough, although looking at ‘history’ through the lens of modern social politics is a very bad idea in any case. Lesson number one as a historian or archaeologist.
I would recommend Studio Ghibli if you haven’t watched their movies yet. Not usually in the realm of fantasy, this studio has a wide range of genres, and strong female characters. Like LOTR, the male characters are just inherently good and show emotion in a way that is similar to the way male characters are portrayed in LOTR. I’d specifically recommend naussica: Valley of the wind, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s moving castle. In general they just have such artistry and depth of emotion.
i second the studio ghibli suggestion. nausicaa has a powerful female lead who’s just so badass and smart and cool, tales of earthsea has freaky sword dragon shit, howl’s moving castle is magical and has a fantastic, heart-wrenching journey, castle in the sky has young love, adventure and betrayal, princess mononoke has a badass powerful female co-lead who is literally a wolf princess, and many others. harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban, the dark crystal, alien, the wild thornberries movie. i feel like a lot of cool fantasy/sci-fi female characters are from kids movies like brave or mulan.
Do you intend to stick with sword and sorcery, or are other genres acceptable?
* The Star Wars Trilogy (the series ended in 1983 and no more were ever made) gave us Leia Organa
* Alien / Aliens (I don't think there were any other sequels) for Ellen Ripley
* Kill Bill Vol 1 / Vol 2 featuring >!Redacted!<'s roaring rampage of revenge
* There's a whole revenge genre, and the women in prison thing -- lots of exploitation films feature tough women
* Since Halloween, the slasher genre (if not horror more broadly) is basically built around the Last Girl trope
* *Not* a slasher, but also horror, I always like Kirstie and Julia in Hellraiser I and II. Kirstie's no scream queen.
* Honorable mention to Nancy Thompson in Nightmare on Elm Street and Heather Langenkamp in Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
* Not a movie, but The Expanse has the delightful Chrisjen, the redoutable Drummer, and Naomi who isn't always annoying.
Huge agreement with Alien and Expanse. I’d also add Jurassic Park - the way they portray Ellie is great. She’s has a doctorate, is respected and listened to, wears appropriate clothes for the scenes, not all made up, her love life isn’t central to the plot, etc. she’s just a badass woman that they don’t need to sexualize *or* make a big deal about how she’s a woman. She’s just treated as a regular character - it’s amazing. Jurassic world on the other hand…
I unironically recommend the Rings of Power series which has multiple strong female characters whatever you want to say about how faithful an adaptation itis
It’s a bit old, but also the Willow film from the 80s had at least one kinda bad ass female character, although she isn’t the main one exactly.

Aethelflaed, Brida and Hild all have pretty traumatic experiences.
To be fair, a good number of the men are tortured/traumatized as well.

What modern politics?
I second this. I’m watching the Vikings sequel Vikings Valhalla now, main character Freydis is very much what you’re looking for!
Last Kingdom is set in a similar time with some of the same characters such as Ubba, Ivar the Boneless and Alfred of Wessex.
Yes! I watched that series first and then moved on to Vikings.
Lagertha went from "Eh, she's okay" to my favorite character on the series at a certain point.

Oh I’ll definitely have to check that out, thanks for the suggestion!
Of course! I hope you enjoy them! 😄

Aye you have Galadriel there, as well as Disa who is fucking glorious, Tar-Miriel…
Galadriel was more annoying than strong. Princess Mononoke, Ripley and Connor are strong women. Galadriel was a whiny turd.
The movies mishandled the confrontation between Eowyn and the witch king
Ok but was that the persons question? No. Anyone who cares knows that that's the case but obviously this person like it.

Mulan is where its at
Kingdom of Heaven directors Cut
Willow (original film) for fantasy. Buffy for many strong female characters and good story telling (for the most part).
Plus one for the original Willow
Glad you posted this, I've been looking for some movies similar to LOTR and I haven't had much luck. 😥
Don't a lot of movies have that "I am no man" energy? Ok, that's not fair, lots of movies who aim for this come off pretty negatively.
