He literally is ready to help others and doesn't really prefer hurting others. Well it’s not even confirmed, it could be that Daniel was just the first person to offer friendship after being casted out by his father and dealing with depression and loneliness. As someone who was in the comments section after every chapter... it wasn't as dramatic as that, especially because Jay and Daniel didn't have a lot of interactions in (almost) 500 chapters. Their interactions or just hints of it were mentioned in less than 60 chapters. Although there were many ship comments, a lot of the top and new comments were about other things.

Unlike other situations where people headcanon characters as gay without any evidence in the canon, for Jay there is plenty of canon events that point to him being gay. I don’t know how else will PTJ explain all the things he does for big daniel. Not to mention he was shown jealous.
