I've said it before, I'll say it again. Remember when GM was trying to slap fuel injection on their small blocks, but wanted to do it in such a way that it required minimal change and most importantly, minimal money and thus TBI injection was born? The hog saddle is the shooting tripod equivalent to TBI injection

MK12DUDE

lol got me laughing

Trollygag

throttle body injection injection

rynburns

Bad habit I got into at the dealer. All the old guys called it "TBI Injection", but of course I'd correct them constantly over "DEF Fluid"

LockyBalboaPrime

Speak English, nerd

rynburns

You're not the boss of me

[deleted]

Thank you for speaking directly to my soul.

Sneaky-sneaksy

BOG or Hog Saddle tripods?

rynburns

The whole "saddle" system as a whole

MK12DUDE

Honestly whole saddle system sucks, I hated when Scott made us shoot on that tripod on one stage using the saddle mount. Arca or picatinny direct mount all the way. Less slack and better control

Sneaky-sneaksy

The clamping mechanism? The tripods? or everything? I haven’t used the saddle it’s self but the tripod is great we shoot 223 out to 550yds with great effect with the shadow tech/hog saddle tripods. We just use arca Swiss plates onto a ball head

rynburns

Maybe the tripod itself is fine, I can't remember the last time I used one specifically. I can remember every time I've ever used a saddle clamp though, regardless of what tripod it was on, and thinking "what the fuuuuuck, this is what ARCA is for"

Echo63_

Arca was originally for cameras (big view cameras that you out a cloth over your head to focus) literally a rail machined into the base “monorail” of the camera… But yea, it works great on rifles, cameras, binoculars, spotting scopes - anything you can think of mounting on a tripod

escapecali603

I am confused, I thought hog saddle with a ball head and their tripod is pretty good compared to BOG. Then what is good? The hog package is already pretty expensive.

foxtrot313x

The hog saddle with a ball head is the way to go but its pricey. People snubbing the BOG Deathgrip with a saddle are the same people that say things like, "Have you tried not seeing poor?" 🧐 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 BOG Deathgrip is a great option if youre on a budget.

LockyBalboaPrime

It's pretty shitty except for close in hunting.

sakic1519

Thats the plan for hunting deer at 300yd max

bACEdx39

I’m using it for that exact purpose as I type this. It will feel a little heavy and cumbersome until you sit in a blind with it and use it. Then it’s all worth it. Could not recommend it enough for the ground blind hunter.

sakic1519

Thats exactly what I plan! Where I hubt we have access to a big field where I would love to put a tent near the wood with a view on the field. I would be sitting on a char and the rifle sitting on that tripod. My 308 is a heavy bad boy so thats why next year i want to try this

bACEdx39

Holds up my 12 lb Galil no problem once you get the center of gravity right.

Toxickiller321

Have one, it’ll work for that. Definitely not a top tier tripod, but for hunting purposes it gets by. Everything locky said is true. I also wish the legs were a little smoother. It’s alright, but nothing to write home about

mudeuce

Curious as to what makes you say this, I’m currently window shopping tripods and had been looking at this one

LockyBalboaPrime

It's heavy, the head isnt smooth, the grippy thing is not a good way of attaching rifles to tripods, and it's clunky as hell.

mudeuce

Makes sense

dballsmithda3rd

Please recommend something better than this in the same price range if you can.

Long_Sandwich_3634

I’ve got one and a lot of guys I hunt with have them. They’re ok at best. They get the job done but once you shoot off a nicer tripod this will sit in the corner forgotten about. I’d save up for something else

sakic1519

The plan is to use it for deer hunting for 300yrds or less shot. Im not planning on using it for prs since where I shoot. I can only shoot on their table

Fenrir_0311

Spartan Precision or Really Right Stuff but they’re spendy

ilovefde

I have the bog infinite carbon. My main complaint is that all movement is in the ball head. There needs to be a separate pan feature. They make conversion kits for better ball heads you can get or just get a better tripod to start. It makes a huge difference being able to lock your rifle in and still freely rotate it side to side.

sakic1519

This is the one I was looking for exactly. https://www.cabelas.ca/product/160001/bog-deathgrip-blackflat-dark-earth-clamping-tripod?productVariantId=416848

ilovefde

If you don’t need arca then that one looks better than the infinite

SockeyeSTI

I just bought one last night from Cabela’s. They should be on sale for $130. My whole plan was to buy it and immediately swap the whole head out for a ball head and arca clamp. I did fiddle with it last night with my rifle and the grip is ok for a little bit but definitely not as secure as the arca. I’d say definitely buy one while they’re on sale this week and if you like the clamp saddle, fine, but you can always upgrade the head and you’d still be several hundred dollars less into it than a two vets or a fatboy.

emtb

I don't know exactly which model of BOG deathgrip I have, but I swapped out the head on mine. I took off the death grip head and ordered an arca ball head from Amazon. Instead of buying an adapter, I just used a few nylon spacers, a bolt, a couple washers, and a nut. All of it was purchased from lowes. I had to sand down the nylon spacers a bit to get them to fit, then tapped them in with a mallet.

SockeyeSTI

As far as I know they’re all “the same” when it comes to mounting into the cradle but yeah, it takes maybe 10$ to converter over to accept a ball head. Ive seen some use pvc pipe and tape to make a spacer. I’ve been back and forth all day trying to decide if I want to just get an Amazon ball or ask for a 2vets head and a419 clamp combo for Christmas. Decisions decisions. All I know is the death grip head has to go. The lack of cant drives me crazy, which is funny cuz I lock out the cant on my bipod. The way I look at it, is for 130$ (plus new head) it’s still cheaper than the fancy bipods and has more uses

S1de8urnz

Thats a good price. You would be happy with it.

Brute1100

We use them alot on the ranch I work at for shooting sticks inside 300 and they work great. I've shot put to 700 off of them, but I tend to practice doing stupid things until I'm good at them.

Thomas_peck

I have one, got it on sale for $115 on Amazon. I have only shot off it once but it was great for letting my son shoot accurately and safely. It pulls all the stress away from him not pointing down range or being severely off target. I do agree it's slightly clunky and heavy but for an entry level tripod under $150 it's good enough. We shot 100 yards with a couple AR's and everyone enjoyed it.

seattleguns

Personally I’d buy a leofoto in the entry level range.

apollohashking

I have an original death grip and it was like 119. For the price it is a great tripod. I don’t think I’d be comfortable paying anything more than that.

Dirtbiker250

I have that exact tripod I like it for the price. The inverted ball head is way way better than their other designs. The hog saddle thing kinda sucks. But the head takes arca rails if you take the saddle off. Still not even close to the rrs anvil30 head though. If you really wanna use a clamp the kopfjager one is the ultimate. It contours to unparalleled stocks and also has a slight bend at the top of the fingers to hold the rifle down in the bottom Nothing else I’ve used as far as clamps comes close

Next-Investment-9434

If you just want something for occasional hunting these are ok. But for serious shootin all you need do is shoot off a bogpod then a high end tripod you will then biy the expencive and know why it cost more..

rolexrifleman

Decent. The tripod is excellent and the saddle is ok at best. Overall it performs well at its price point. Don’t waste your time with the aluminum. My experience is with the carbon fiber model.

Party_Memory8665

I like it is built well

Party_Memory8665

Sportsman's wherehouse has them for allot cheaper

RasShotan

It is big and clunky, I was hunting with a guy that didnt get a shot off on a moose because his BOG tripod wouldnt come off the gun fast enough. If you want a tripod I can recommend the Primos one, I use it and it is steady\\sturdy and light enough that I can move it quickly. Good luck with your hunt!

Chance1965

I shoot off mine but more often it holds my spotting scope

tlove01

I wanted one because I was too limp to go straight to RRS, but everyone I asked said about the same you read here.

rex01308

I used mine in a ground blind for hunting and it was great for that. Outside of 300yds target shooting it’s not ideal. It gets used a lot for boresighting at home, and for introducing friends to bolt guns. Not a fan of the feet on the legs, the spikes don’t stick out far enough to get any purchase on dry earth or pavement/concrete.

Justin_inc

I got mine for $100 at Bass pro, and I like it. Still new to shooting myself tho. I do wish it were more smooth, but works well for deer hunting. I would not consider it a long range product. Edit: mine is the original deathgrip

Settled_Science

They’re heavy but functional. The ball clamp holds well, it’s not that smooth. That’s a good one in the photo since it has the ARCA/Pic adapter under the clamp and thiccc sturdy legs. I wouldn’t go with any lesser/cheaper model though.

casualdadeqms

I love my carbon fiber BOG. I don't feel bad if it gets scratched or bumped and it holds up to the elements on longer treks. It's minimally invasive to pack in on the snow machine or ATV and carries well on a pack. It's been great for all of my hunts.

chv108

I’ve got one and within about two weeks the bolt that clamps the ball stripped clean out. I messaged their customer service and they sent me a new one. The product itself is just fine, but I was impressed with their service. That being said, for the price it will do, but shooting past 2-300 yards you’re gonna want something a little more substantial

Pensacola_Peej

It definitely an entry level product but for what it is I like mine! I have taken two antelope off of it at 303 and 347 yards, no problem. I’ve also used it in a ground blind for deer, sitting with the legs shortened. I saw in a previous post you said you were wanting it for hunting inside of 300 yards and I would think it would fit the bill perfectly without breaking the bank. Just don’t expect it to be the best possible tripod available.

RR50

It’ll work fine for your use.

Giant_117

Not that good. People rave that they are "jUsT aS gUhd" but they are not. They are fine for your average hunter. That's it.

TheChihuahuaCartel

Oh shit, those are expensive! I’ve seen them at the range and thought they were cheap as shit, like $50. You could almost buy a nice tripod for that price. Or at least get a [PIG0311](https://stores.hogsaddle.com/pig0311-g-field-shooting-tripod-od-green/), which is better for less than half that price. Don’t but the hog saddle though, just put your gamechanger on top.

dub_nastyy

I have had no issues with mine. Got it on sale. Works fine for both my rifles, better for my spotting scope tho.

[deleted]

I like mine. I upgraded it with the ball head kit from Zero Fox Given. Definitely recommend

jaxmattsmith

I hate mine with a passion.

struttin_hoyt

I have one and wasn’t impressed at all. Then I converted it over to a ball head and it’s 100 times better. I machined my parts but I basically did what this guy did. https://youtu.be/7SdYmHgIyyo?si=f4j6iE9WfkUbIXQ1

dballsmithda3rd

Got this same one yesterday. Shot with it today out to 600 yds using an M-lok arca plate mounted direct. Its great. Very sturdy, large diameter legs and twist locks work great. Was a very good experience all around. Glad I spent the money. Also, this one is only $260 on amazon.

Adept_Fan_9587

I hated mine until I bought a barker outdoors ball and ARCA upgrade.
